I am snuggled up going through my Dayton Conference materials, remember-
ing all the fun we had. It is an interesting process to put together an OAEA
Conference and the Dayton team worked hard. We had a diverse list of speak-
ers, covering many topics. Bèatrice Coron stepped in at the last minute and
shared her fabulous paper cutting art . Several of the speakers conducted work-
shops that enhanced their presentations. We
were able to honor our own Willis Bing Davis,
who shared a video, was interviewed and answered questions.
Members had a variety of workshops to choose from , both on
and off site. Thanks to all members who shared their expertise
as presenters. Thanks to the University of Dayton, the Dayton
Art Institute, and especially K12 Gallery where we had a won-
derful Friday night event. Our Fundraising table was terrific
and we had t-shirts and sweatshirts with the logo.
It was a successful event and if you were able to join us and
have any pictures you can share we would love to see them. We
hope you enjoyed it. I am looking forward to 2016 in Cincin-
nati.

Hello! Thank you for the warm welcome to my new role as Regional Director. I’d like to take this
opportunity to introduce myself. I have the pleasure of working with pre-service art educators at the
University of Dayton. As a faculty member, my primary focus is on supporting students in their
journey to teach—and ensuring they are ready to walk into the K-12 classroom equipped to deliver
meaningful and rigorous art education for our youth. I am also focused on building bridges be-
tween our students, the University community and you…the amazing art educators in our region.
Prior to coming to the Midwest three years ago, I taught middle school art and taught fiber arts and
art education at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ.
Today’s weather reminds me of the Southwest. It is a balmy 60 degrees outside! The sun is shin-
ing and my dogs are romping in the yard. Spring feels incredibly close – yet I know that there is
still a considerable amount of winter left to endure. This interim time when many of us yearn for the green shoots of Spring
to reveal themselves, to smell the lilacs as they peek up from the wintery ground, and to feel the warmth of the sun shining
down, offers a time to reflect and plan. We can begin by considering the amazing educators with whom we have the pleas-
ure of working. At conference our Western Region submitted a stunning slate of Award nominees. These include Kate
Brookshire for Middle Division; Julia Lindsey for Retired Division; Kathy Pugh for Secondary Division, and myself for
Supervision Division. Ben Davis and Holly Johnson are our Outstanding Art Teachers this year and Sara Green is our first
Advocate Award winner! The Friends of the Cardinal Center were nominated as the recipient of the Distinguished Business
or Organization. Art supporters Marilyn and Paul Messing receive our Distinguished Citizen for Art Education award and
Amy Allen was awarded the Distinguished Citizen for Art Education. Our service award winners will be recognized at our
Summer Awards luncheon and our division awardees at Conference. Congratulations to each of you.
The Western Region Board and I spent our first meeting of the year reflecting and considering how we can best meet your
needs. We invite you to join us in this time of planning. For instance, we have a wonderful workshop in February with
Matt Burgy where we will learn the art of making mobiles and another one scheduled for Spring with Megan Newton, our
new RD-Elect, where we will be exploring “Big Ideas”. What kinds of professional development would be most helpful to
you? As you know we gathered together in December for Nibble & Network. Would you like to gather together for cama-
raderie and conversation more frequently? What fits your schedule? Do you want to visit art exhibits and have a chance to
talk about work? How do you prefer us to communicate with you? Recently, Kate Brookshire, our Technology Chair, sent
out a list of the ways to stay in touch beyond email. If you haven’t signed up yet, join our Remind site or find us on Face-
book! These are easy, fun and quick ways to stay in touch but maybe you have an idea that would reach beyond the web.
Also, as you will see in this issue, we are preparing for the Summer Show to showcase the work of our K-12 students in the
region. Do you have an interest in showing your work through a regional art educator’s exhibition? Or perhaps an exhibi-
tion in which your work is shown alongside that of a student you teach? These are just a few of the types of questions we
have been asking. To help us truly determine your needs, we will be sending out a short survey through Survey Monkey
that will solicit your opinions and ideas. We invite you to work together now to lay the groundwork and sow the seeds for a
bountiful spring and summer.
Best wishes,
Darden
Greetings From Our Regional Director

"This past December Western region members gathered
at the home of Alice Tavani, OAEA President-Elect, for an af-
ternoon of delicious snacks and comradery. It was a lot of fun
catching up with everyone as we chatted about conference, our
classrooms, and the upcoming holidays. One of the best parts of
our annual Nibble & Network event is that it makes it easy for
anyone to drop off their YAM and YPAE work. You can find
more information about the YAM and YPAE shows from
www.oaea.org"
Nibble N Network
The 2016 regional student art exhibition, also known as the “summer show”, is open to
ALL Western members of OAEA with students in grades K-12! That’s right: It’s not just
a K-8 show or a high school show; it’s BOTH! Though the limit is eight (8) items per
member, we will happily settle for one or two. If you submitted work to the YAM/YPAE,
you may already have work in the summer show, because anything not selected for YAM
or YPAE is automatically entered in the regional exhibition. Submissions will be accept-
ed April 25 through May 11. Work can be dropped off WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, be-
tween the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. ONLY during the monthly regional board meet-
ing at Panera on Brown Street. Other arrangements can be made by contacting Rachel Hathaway at
rachel.hathaway.beavercreek.k12.oh.us or via phone at (937) 429-7588 x7635.
Once the work has been collected, the chairperson will
organize it and send letters to all students and teachers
with work in the show. The show will be displayed at
the ArtStreet Gallery on Kiefaber Street, adjacent to the
University of Dayton. The date for hanging the show is
Monday, June 13 (Volunteers should meet at the gallery
by 9 a.m.). Please contact Rachel Hathaway with any
questions you may have.) The show will be available for
viewing from June 14 through June 30 during regular
gallery hours (10-4pm), and the artists’ opening recep-
tions are scheduled for Wednesday, June 15.

Call for Artists
Dayton Metro Library (DML) is building flexible spaces in our new facilities that are ideal for creativity
and learning. To foster such endeavors, the Library is piloting an Artist in Residence program. If you
enjoy sharing the creative process and teaching people new skills, we would love to hear from you!
We are currently looking for artists who are able to facilitate an art project created in collaboration with
library patrons at the Miami Township, Northwest, and/or New Lebanon Branches in 2016.
Program Outline
Commitment of three to six weeks to create an art project with community involvement, resulting in
one or more artworks for public display at the Library durable enough for at least a three-month in-
stallation.
A minimum of five hours of studio time per week onsite in the Opportunity Space, preferably held at
various days/times throughout the week to cover a variety of the library’s open hours.
The project must present DML patrons with an activity-based, hands-on opportunity to learn or prac-
tice a skill through at least three scheduled classes, drop-in programs, or combination of both.
Artist may stipulate a desired age range for participants.
DML will publicize the project and will be responsible for participant signup.
The project will remain on display outside of studio hours. It is preferred that projects be designed so
that patrons can enter and view the artwork in progress during regular Library hours; however, the
Opportunity Space can be locked and the work viewed through glass walls if necessary.
The artist will be responsible for procuring all necessary consumable supplies based on a budget ap-
proved by DML. DML will reimburse the artist for supply costs based on actual detailed receipts.
The resulting artwork(s) and all leftover supplies will become the property of DML.
A stipend in an amount up to $1,500 based on length of residency may be requested.
The artist may display and/or work on other projects in the Opportunity Space as long as the mini-
mum requirement for the collaborative project is met.
Application Process
Complete and submit the application – explaining the proposed project and final artwork(s), what you
would plan to do during your studio hours, the patron involvement component, and your relevant ex-
perience including sample work and/or references.
Applications can be emailed in a .doc, .docx, or .pdf format, or submitted in hard copy to Jayne Klose
at [email protected] or Dayton Metro Library, 120 S. Patterson Blvd., Dayton, OH
45402.
If you have pictures you would like to submit with your application, please provide a link to a web
address containing those photos in your email or save them in a pdf. If you must attach a photo, the
size of all attachments cannot be greater than 10 MB.
Interviews will be held for artists who are being considered.
Proposals will be evaluated on the quality of the collaboration, creativity, and the potential for patron
engagement and learning.
If offered a residency, the artist must sign the OPERS Independent Contractor Agreement, fill out an
IRS W9 form, and complete a DML paid background check.
