1 Version introduction

1.1 The following versions can be upgraded.

1.2 Upgrade prerequisite

The U8860 handset software should be updated with the MICRO SD card from

Gingerbread to IceCreamSandwitch version. (Android Platform version 2.3 to 4.0)

The existing software version on the Device is U8860V100R001C151B811.

1.3 Upgrade files

Update File Description:

The file dload/UPDATE.APP is the update file for both modem and android side main

firmware. This file needs to update firstly for India.

The file vendor/UPDATE.APP is for customization, this mean the file decide which

country customization will be used. (In this case it is for India)

Size of firmware UPDATE.APP file should be 683 MB approximately

Size of customization UPDATE.APP file should be 1KB approximately

1.4 Upgrade Procedure Description

The main firmware (dload/UPDATE.APP) should be update first followed by

customization software (dload/UPDATE.APP)

NOTE:

1. For every file update, copy the UPDATE.APP file to /dload folder in SD card, the

file name should be changed to UPDATE.APP if the file name is not same to this.

2. We suggest prepare two SD card, one use for main firmware, another use for the

customization software.

OR

Use main firmware (/dload/UPDATE.APP) first for SD card upgrade, then format the

SD card put the UPDATE.APP for customization on dload folder and perform the

upgrade.

2 Upgrade preparation

2.1 Check current upgrade environment

Make sure that the MICRO SD card is available and can be read and write.

Size of the MICRO SD card should be at least 1GB

2.2 Get and check the software package

The content of the compressed files is: dload/UPDATA.APP

3 Important Notes

3.1 Note 1

To make sure that the power of the battery is enough to run the upgrade process. Maybe you

can connect the handset with the charger or the USB data cable to provide power.

3.2 Note 2

Upgrade operations will erase the user data, so if there is something very important,

recommend you to take backup before the upgrade.

3.3 Note 3

For customization file upgrade using SD card upgrade, need to put the customization

UPDATE.APP file into dload folder and place it in the root of the SD card

/dload/UPDATE.APP not /vendor/UPDATE.APP

4 Upgrade introduction

There are 2 methods to upgrade: normal upgrade and force upgrade.

Normal upgrade needs to start the handset to idle screen and enter the setting module.

Force upgrade is often used when the handset can’t boot up or can’t enter the idle screen.

Note:

User cannot take Data Backup of existing software using Force upgrade method

5 Upgrade operations

5.1 Normal upgrade

Step 1. A MICRO SD card of 1GB or more should be available. The MICRO SD card

made by Sandisk, Kingstone, or Kingmax is recommended.

Step 2. Format the MICRO SD card (This operation is optional).

Step 3. Obtain the unzipped file (subdirectory: \dload\*.*) to be upgraded

Step 4. Copy the entire dload folder (with UPDATA.APP in it) to the root directory of the

MICRO SD card.(size of UPDATE.APP file should be 683 MB approximately)

Step 5. Insert the MICRO SD card into the handset and power on. After entering the home

screen, press menu key to choose Settings->Storage->Software upgrade->SD card

Upgrade to start the upgrade. Reference to the following pictures.

Note:

Don’t forget to take back up of all your phone data like (contacts, sms, call log, system

settings, email account etc) before the Upgrade Confirm

Step 6. When the progress bar stop, the phone will restart, if not you need to remove the

battery manually.

5.2 Force upgrade

User cannot take Data backup of the existing software using force upgrade.

Follow the procedure mentioned in below steps for force upgrade method.

Step 1. A MICRO SD card of 1GB or more should be available. The MICRO SD card

made by Sandisk, Kingstone, or Kingmax is recommended.

Step 2. Format the MICRO SD card (This operation is optional).

Step 3. Obtain the unzipped file (subdirectory: \dload\*.*) to be upgraded

Step 4. Copy the entire dload folder (with UPDATA.APP in it) to the root directory of the

MICRO SD card. (size of UPDATE.APP file should be 683 MB approximately)

Step 5. Make sure your handset is power off. Insert the MICRO SD card into the handset.

Pressing the VOLUME DOWN key, VOLUME UP key, and the POWER key

simultaneously to power on the phone into SD card Upgrade mode.

Step 6. When the progress bar stop, the phone will restart, if not you need to remove the

battery manually.

6 Upgrade validate

6.1 Check the version

1. By Setting ->About phone->Build number, to check the version. Just like

6.2 Basic function check

Switch on the handset, enter the idle screen, input a dial number and make a voice call, then

long press the power key to power off the handset.

6.3 Upgrading the Customization software

1. Customization software UPDATE.APP should be placed inside the dload folder and

SD card Path should be /dload/UPDATE.APP

2. User can upgrade the customization software using the Upgrade operations mentioned in

the step 5 by any one of the method (Normal/Force upgrade method)

Note:

User need not to take Backup using Normal Upgrade method for customization software

upgrade.

6.4 Restoring Backup Data

1. Open the “All Backup” Application

2. Select Restore

3. Select the “Backup” file

4. Check all the application you need to restore and then press “RESTORE” option

(Top Right hand side of the screen)

5. Select the Yes button to overwrite existing records

6. Press OK after the Data restore screen will appear.

7. Select OK for the Attention message for phone Reboot

8. Reboot the Phone

9. Verify that all the backup records before the SD card upgrade procedure, are restored

successfully on the Device like (contacts, messages, contacts, email accounts etc)
