Chapter 1 Frame Overview

The frame serves to combine all the boards plugged in the frame into an independent unit through the backplane.

The functional frames of BSC and their functions are listed in Table 1-1.

Table 1-1 BSC functional frames

Functional frames Function description

Clock Frame The clock frame phase-locks upper-level MSC or BITS clock reference resources and provides the AM/CM and BM with stable clock sources.

Main Control Frame

The main control frame carries out management and control of the BM, communication between AM/CM and signalling processing.

Communication Control Frame

The communication control frame is the control centre of AM/CM. The communication control unit mainly manages and controls the system.

Transmission Interface Frame

The transmission interface frame implements multiplexing/demultiplexing of inter-modular speech channels and signalling links, optic-electric conversion and E1 interface driving so that the inter-modular communication messages can be transmitted on the optical fiber.

TCSM Frame The TCSM frame fulfills the functions of transcoding / rate adaptation and sub-multiplexing.

BIE Frame Designed for the BM, the BIE frame presents an Abis interface in between BSC and BTS.

Central Database Frame (CDB Frame)

The CDB frame, a traffic processing centre, supports the broadcast short message service.

Back Administrative Module Frame (BAM Frame)

The BAM frame is a bridge between BSC and OMC. The latter performs the operation & maintenance of the BSC via OMC.

1.1 Frame Structure

The hardware of a frame consists of finished board, backplane, front & back beams, left & right side plates, guide rail, etc. The clock frame is shown in Figure 1-1.

Except for the transmission interface frame and the main control frame, the other frames are identical in form and specifications with that shown in the above diagram. The transmission interface frame and the main control frame are twice as high as common frames.

1.2 Backplane

The backplane, an essential constituent part of the frame, is a four-layered printed board. The boards in one frame are linked with the tracks in the backplane, which decreases tremendously the connection lines at the back of the backplane and enhances the reliability of the overall unit. Frames communicate with one another via the connection lines at the back of the backplane.

For the convenience of understanding, the backplanes will be described in the following sections along with the frames. The corresponding relations between frames and backplanes are shown in Table 1-2.

Note:

The backplane in Communication Control Frame and backplane in Main Control Frame are different, although their names are the same (MCB). They can be distinguished by their board name: the name of backplane in Communication Control Frame is C821MCB, while the name of backplane in Main Control Frame is CB02MCB.
