The big “S’’ is still on his chest, but the new Superman that came to the shelves of comic book stores last week is not exactly the chipper and bright-eyed optimist of lore.

Instead, the kid from Krypton featured in “Su-perman: Earth One” sports a hoodie, a brooding brow and fashion sense that would not put him out of place in hipster lairs from Brooklyn to Seattle.

And that, said Dan DiDio, senior vice president and executive editor at DC Comics is just what the com-pany was aiming for when it asked J. Michael Straczynski, himself a noted comic book writer who cur-rently helms the company’s flagship monthly “Superman” title.

“We always knew that we wanted to do a real, contemporary interpre-tation of Superman,” he told The Associated Press. “And what we did is we reached out to Joe Straczynski — Joe is probably one of the big-gest Superman fans out there.”

DiDio said DC augured the retell-ing as a way to reach out to buyers not just in comic book stores but in other book stores, too — fans of

books and series like “Twilight” or Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy of crime novels.

While the graphic novel features the jet-black hair and piercing stare that Clark Kent/Superman has had

since his creation, the art reflects a more modern bent with narrow pants and ties and the ubiquitous hoodie.

The work draws upon the Super-man mythology but recreates it for a contemporary audience with a 20-year-old Clark Kent who’s un-sure how to use his super-strength, super-smarts and just plain su-per abilities as he makes his way through a grittier, more realistic Metropolis trying to find not just a job but meaning and purpose.

There’s currently one copy of the original left at Eagle Valley Music and Comics in West Vail, but owner Tom Robbins says a reprinted sec-ond edition is expected to come out later this month.

Megamind is the most brilliant super-villain the world has ever

known... and the least success-ful. Over the years, he has tried to conquer Metro City in every imaginable way. Each attempt

has been a colossal failure, thanks to the caped superhero

known as “Metro Man,” until the day Megamind actually de-

feats him in the throes of one of his botched evil plans. Suddenly, the fate of Metro City is threat-ened when a new villain arrives

and chaos runs rampant, leaving everyone to wonder: Can the

world’s biggest “mind” actually be the one to save the day?

Bernanke defends new Fed plan to boost

economyFederal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke defended

the Fed’s new $600 billion program to aid the economy yesterday, rejecting concerns that it will spur runaway inflation.

Critics, including some Fed officials, fear that all the money being injected into the economy could ignite in-flation or speculative bubbles in the prices of bonds or commodities.

Speaking to a conference on the Georgia coast, Ber-nanke said the new program, announced Wednesday, won’t push inflation to “super ordinary” levels.

The Fed will buy $600 billion worth of government bonds in a bid to make loans cheaper and get Ameri-cans to spend more.

Russian reporter in coma after beating in Moscow

Two unknown men waited for Russian journalist Oleg Kashin to come home and then bludgeoned him on his head, arms and legs. Yet his editor said it was Kashin’s mangled hands - with part of one pinky bro-ken off - that showed his attackers wanted to make sure he never wrote again.

Kashin, a 30-year-old reporter for the respected Kommersant newspaper, was hospitalized in a drug-induced coma after the attack early yesterday outside

his Moscow apartment. He is the latest in a line of journalists and activists to

be assaulted in Russia. In most cases, the perpetrators are never found, but the Kremlin appeared determined to show that this time things will be different.

China’s president visits Portugal, eyes investment

Chinese President Hu Jintao has started a two-day state visit to Portugal where officials are hoping invest-ments by Beijing will help revive one of the European Union’s frailest economies.

China has been using its large foreign currency re-serves to expand its economic presence in western Eu-rope.

Hu traveled from France where companies won deals with China worth euro16 billion ($22.8 billion).

In Portugal, Hu is expected to preside over the signing of trade agreements and private sector investments.

Hu was meeting yesterday with Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva. Today, he was due to hold talks with Prime Minister Jose Socrates.

Hu is accompanied by a delegation of Chinese com-pany executives.

BBC journalists strike for 2nd day over pensions

BBC reporters are planning further strikes after a two-day walkout over pension changes successfully disrupted the broadcaster’s TV and radio programs, a labor union said yesterday.

Jeremy Dear, chief of the National Union of Journal-ists, said a 48-hour strike that began Friday had forced some news programs off the air and prompted radio

Jobs crisis eases, but economy has long way

The economy added 151,000 jobs last month - the best showing since April, but only about half what it would take to put a noticeable dent in unemployment.

Two big questions: What will it take for businesses to hire that vigorously again? And when will that be?

With Congress facing gridlock, some economists say it will be at least a year before companies gain enough confidence to hit the sweet spot of 300,000 new jobs a month. That’s what it would take to reduce the unem-ployment rate by a full percentage point over a year.

Fannie Mae asks for $2.5 billion in new aid

Government-controlled mortgage buyer Fannie Mae is asking for $2.5 billion in additional federal aid after posting a narrower loss in the third quarter.

Fannie Mae said Friday it lost $3.46 billion, or 61 cents a share, in the July-September quarter. That takes into account $2.1 billion in dividend payments to the Treasury Department. It compares with a loss of $19.8 billion, or $3.47 a share, in the third quarter of 2009.

The government rescued Washington-based Fannie Mae and sibling company Freddie Mac about two years ago and it estimates that will cost taxpayers up to $259 billion. That’s nearly twice the $133.4 billion Fannie and Freddie are in line to receive from taxpayers so far and would make it the most expensive bailout of the financial crisis. The $2.5 billion in additional aid that Fannie is asking for compares with a request for $1.5 billion in the second quarter.

radical U.S.-born cleric “dead or alive” after the al-Qaida-linked preacher failed to appear at his trial for his role in the killing of foreigners.

Yemen is under heavy U.S. pressure to crack down on the country’s al-Qaida offshoot after a scheme to send bombs through the mail in packages addressed to the U.S. was thwarted a week ago. The group known as l-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula claimed responsibility for the plot on Friday.

The cleric, Anwar al-Awlaki, was born in New Mex-ico to Yemeni parents and is one of the most prominent English-language radical clerics. His sermons advocat-ing jihad, or holy war, against the United States have influenced militants involved in several attacks or at-tempted attacks on U.S. soil.

Authorities inspect 10-year-old mom’s homeSpanish social workers have inspected the home of a

10-year-old Romanian girl who gave birth last week to determine whether her baby is being properly cared for, officials said Thursday.

Authorities in the small southern city of Lebrija also arranged a doctor’s appointment to make sure the young mother and infant are doing well.

In a statement, city officials said they are investigat-ing when the pregnant child arrived in Spain and why she had not seen a doctor before showing up last week at a hospital to give birth.

Authorities did not give details about the modest apartment where the 10-year-old girl is now living with her mother, but the mayor of Lebrija called it “hum-ble.”

US military flies over Haiti to view storm damage

The U.S. military yesterday began flights over Haiti to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Tomas.

Flights off of the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima will help pinpoint the worst-hit areas and those where people most need relief, U.S. Southern Com-mand spokesman Jose Ruiz said.

The Iwo Jima arrived off Haiti’s coast Friday with eight Marine Corps helicopters and two Navy helicop-ters that could also be used later to help deliver relief supplies. In a telephone interview from Miami, Ruiz

said that the damage assessment flights were requested by Haiti’s government, and that was all that had been asked for so far.

The State Department has said it has enough blankets, plastic sheeting, hygiene kits and other relief supplies in place throughout Haiti to help as many as 125,000 storm victims. If those supplies aren’t enough, there are more warehoused in Miami.

Obama, Calderon talk after drug shootout

President Barack Obama is repeating his support for Mexican officials after one of Mexico’s most wanted drug lords was killed in a shootout.

The White House says that Obama, who’s traveling in India, spoke by telephone yesterday with Mexican President Felipe Calderon (fay-LEE’-pay kahl-duh-ROHN’).

On Friday, there was an hours-long gun battle in the border city of Matamoros that killed a cartel head, An-tonio Ezequiel Cardenas Guillen, also known as “Tony the Storm.”Obama says the U.S. supports Mexico’s efforts against organized criminal groups. The White House says Obama offered condolences on the death of Mexican armed forces in the operation as well as the death of a reporter who was covering the shootout.

Scientists find damage to coral near BP well

For the first time, federal scientists have found dam-age to deep sea coral and other marine life on the ocean floor several miles from the blown-out BP well - a strong indication that damage from the spill could be significantly greater than officials had previously ac-knowledged.

Tests are needed to verify that the coral died from oil that spewed into the Gulf of Mexico after the Deepwa-ter Horizon rig explosion, but the chief scientist who led the government-funded expedition said Friday he was convinced it was related.

“What we have at this point is the smoking gun,” said Charles Fisher, a biologist with Penn State University who led the expedition aboard the Ronald Brown, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration re-search vessel.

Kansas defeats CU to earn biggest comeback ever

Kansas is used to great comebacks.Take the 2008 NCAA basketball title game in which

the Jayhawks rallied from nine points down in the final two minutes to beat Memphis in overtime.

But in football? Simple victories have been scarce, much less miracle comebacks.

That changed yesterday when the Jayhawks scored 35 unanswered points in the final 11:05 and overcame a 28-point deficit to beat Colorado 52-45. It was the greatest comeback in Kansas history.

“I’m still in shock,” said Johnathan Wilson, who caught a 38-yard touchdown pass with 9:26 left to cut the Buffaloes’ lead to 14 points after Kansas recovered an onside kick. “The Colorado guys were talking trash to us ... and I really had no response. All of a sudden we started making plays and playing our game and they shut up real quick. As soon as I scored that touchdown, I felt like we were going to come back and win.”

The 35 points in the fourth quarter were the most in Jayhawks history.

James Sims scored four touchdowns, all in the final 19 minutes, including the game-winner of 28 yards with 52 seconds left. He finished with 123 yards on 20 carries.

“I don’t want to have to be in that situation again, having to come back like that,” Sims said. “We figured once we got the onside kick and brought it down and scored and the defense got that pick, we felt like we were in the game.”

Linebacker Steven Johnson said first-year Kansas coach Turner Gill had a prophetic message at halftime

with the Buffaloes up 35-10.“He said, ‘You all need to come out here and get

ready for the best comeback ever,’” Johnson said.

Budaj stops 31 shots in Avalanche winPeter Budaj made 31 saves for his

first shutout in nearly a year, Kev-in Porter scored two goals and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Dallas Stars 5-0 last night.

Philippe Dupuis had a short-hand-ed goal and two assists. Milan He-jduk and Brandon Yip also scored for the Avalanche. Matt Duchene chipped in with two assists.

Dallas came into the game leading the league in goals per game (3.58) and had scored six goals in Phoenix on Friday night, but Budaj kept the high-scoring Stars off the board. He made 14 saves in the second period and benefited from two hit posts en route to his first shutout since Dec. 7, 2009.

Meanwhile, his team was pepper-

ing Andrew Raycroft with a season-high 45 shots.

The Avalanche blew it open with two goals in a 31-second span early in the third. Dupuis stole a puck from Dallas defenseman Jeff Woy-witka and fed Porter, who scored to make it 4-0. Right after that Yip re-directed Duchene’s centering pass by Raycroft to finish the scoring.

The Jayhawks scored 35 unanswered points in the final 11:05 and overcame a 28-point deficit to beat Colorado 52-45. It was the greatest comeback in Kansas history. AP photo.

it’s nothing to worry about.”You can catch Gregorak joining

Ligety in racing the GS on Sunday, Dec. 5 at the Beav’.

Ligety won a gold medal in the combined at the 2006 Olympics, but expressed indifference about the absence of a combined event at this year’s Birds.

“There will be plenty of combines

on the World Cup this season,” he said. “It doesn’t make a big difference to me either way.”

Ligety’s young teammate Andrew Weibrecht had stronger feelings about there being no combined at the Birds, and after winning a gold in the Super Combined at the Vancouver Olympics earlier this year, Weibrecht had a different take on the issue than you might expect.

”That’s a good thing,” he said with a smile. “Any time we can get rid of the combines, I’ll take it.”

In addition to Sunday’s GS the schedule is set to feature Downhill on Friday, Dec. 3; Super-G on Sat-urday, Dec. 4.

to Eagle County Planner Scot Hunn, the survey, along with research and public input previously gathered, will be used during an upcoming charrette with team members from Mauriello Planning Group and OZ Architecture. “The information and input we’re gathering will provide critical direction for us as we form vision statements, policies and goals for the Eagle-Vail Business District Master Plan,” said Hunn.

dlmoser. “Lindsey and Julia are strong and eager to continue their Olympic suc-cess, but the rest of this group knows they can step up. Our group dynamics are great, the coaching staff is highly profes-sional and because of that, this team has the opportunity to do some great things this season.”

The free public event, presented by Vail Resorts, drew hundreds of cheering fans in support of the U.S. stars wearing their new Spyder uniforms. Spyder has been providing innovative performance race suits and functional outerwear to the U.S. Ski Team for over 20 years.

U.S. Ski Team broadcast partner Uni-versal Sports aired the celebration live on www.UniversalSports.com, where it is now available for on-demand stream-ing.

Continuing Olympic successLindsey Vonn, a Vail resident and for-

mer Ski and Snowboard Club Vail athlete, enters the 2011 season as one of the most decorated alpine skiers in American his-tory. In addition to 2010 Olympic gold and bronze medals, her re-sume also boasts three consecutive World Cup over-all and downhill titles, two straight World Cup super G crowns and a 2010 crystal globe for super combined. She currently holds the American record for World Cup victories with 33 and will be look-ing to defend her double World Cham-pionships gold medals in downhill and super G.

“I’m really excited that Vail and the U.S. Ski Team put together this amaz-ing event to name the 2011 team,” said Vonn. “It’s a cool way for our fans, both here in Vail and watching the event live on Universal Sports to get to know all the athletes on the team. Vail always puts on a great show and I think this will add a lot of excitement for people to continue to cheer us throughout the season.”

Miller returns for his 13th winter with the U.S. Ski Team following an inspired Olympics where he pushed his own limits to garner the full complement of

hardware highlighted by a stunning gold in super combined. As the most deco-rated American male alpine skier, there are few marks for Miller to accomplish, yet for him, it’s not about wins, it’s about skiing with passion.

“It’s about doing what I like to do best,” said Miller. “It was never about the victories. Not at the beginning of my career and not now. I just love to ski, stay fit and encourage kids to get out and do the same.”

Mancuso enters the 2011 season driv-en by a double silver medal haul in Van-couver, which boosted her to the most successful female Olympic alpine skier in U.S. history. It also recharged her for a solid preparation period fueled by mo-tivation to return to her spot among the World Cup elite.

Stepping up“There aren’t any excuses,” said Hoe-

dlmoser, who enters his 14th season with the women’s team. “Everyone did what they needed to do in the preparation pe-riod and we’re all really motivated. I’m expecting quite a bit. It’s time for some of these athletes to step up and make that breakthrough.”

Fresh off his Olympic super G bronze medal, and successful shoulder surgery, Weibrecht will be eager to open the speed season to hunt for his first World Cup podium, while Ligety is looking to add to his second World Cup giant slalom title and upgrade his GS bronze from the 2009 World Championships.

“The work that the athletes put in this prep period is unprecedented,” added Rearick. “It’s something I’m proud of, but I’m also proud of the work this coaching staff has done. We’re excited to continue that execution as a team throughout the World Cup and World Championship year.”

Major calendar events to watch this season are the Aspen Winternational set for Thanksgiving weekend in Aspen, CO featuring Vonn, Mancuso and the full complement of international stars. American men take to the slopes just down the road in Beaver Creek Dec. 3-5 for the annual Birds of Prey races, where Miller, Ligety and Nyman have been podium staples. Tune in to NBC, Versus and Universal Sports to see all the ac-tion.

The 2011 FIS Alpine World Cham-pionships are set for Feb. 8-20 in Gar-misch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
