POONA NATIONAL PARKPoona National Park starts just 6km south-east of Maryborough on the northern side of the Maryborough-Cooloola and Boonooroo Road. Access is possible by four-wheel-drive vehicle, boat or walking. This is a great place for low-key nature-based activities such as photography and birdwatching. No facilities are provided and camping is not allowed. See spectacular wildflower displays in spring and summer. You can fish from the Kalah Creek area only. The Park conserves valuable remnants of the wallum heath communities which flourished in the Maryborough-Hervey

Bay area before settlement and land clearing. Paperbark forests and woodlands, mangroves, banksia and blue gum woodlands also grow in the park. Poona National Park is the traditional country of the Butchulla people who also lived on nearby Fraser Island.
MAAROOM, BOONOOROO AND TUANMaaroom is a small, friendly, fishing village on the waterfront with views to Fraser Island situated just 20km south of Maryborough, off the Cooloola Coast Highway and 50km from Hervey Bay. Down at the water’s edge is a pleasant spot to have a picnic with a sheltered
Great Sandy Strait Located between the mainland and Fraser Island, the Great Sandy Strait is a diverse mix of marine and coastal wetlands, crystal clear turquoise water, long stretches of white sandy beaches, native woodlands and dense rainforest.
Poona, Boonooroo, Maaroom, Tuan and Tinnanbar Let the pace ease back a few notches at these charming seaside villages nestled on the water’s edge of the Great Sandy Strait with views across to Fraser Island. Perfect for fishing, boating, bird watching, camping, and bush walking – or just relaxing by the water.

gazebo and playground. There’s an all weather boat ramp with tidal access for fishing.
Boonooroo and its neighbour Tuan are typical sleepy little fishing hamlets. Boonooroo has a bowls club, golf course, tennis court, and bike and boat hire. This is a wallum swamp area, home to a unique collection of Australian flora and fauna including tea trees, kangaroos, eucalypts, galahs, bottle brush and sea eagles. It is also the second largest protection area in Queensland for the dugong.
POONAPoona is located 35km from Maryborough and is popular with holidaymakers who enjoy peaceful surroundings, plenty of space and good fishing from boats or the beach. Poona offers a great place for children to play and swim safely, with dolphins playing just off the beach. When the tide goes out, explore thetidal pools, pump for yabbies on the beach or chase soldier crabs.
TINNANBARTinnanbar’s white sandy beach and clear turquoise water make it one of the best along the Queensland coast, attracting sea turtles and dugongs. It is suitable for swimming and sailing at all tides. There are a number of nearby creeks and good access to offshore fishing grounds. There is a short cut to Tinnanbar through Bauple using the forestry roads.
TIN CAN BAY AND RAINBOW BEACHReturn to the Cooloola Coast Road and follow the Tin Can Bay signs. You will pass the Camp Kerr Military Training Area before arriving in Tin Can Bay where you can enjoy many nature-based activities including hand feeding the dolphins, boating, fishing, water activities and environmental walks.
Continue from Tin Can Bay to Rainbow Beach for rolling surf beaches, coloured sands, hang gliding and fun four-wheel drive experiences. Visit Inskip Point where there is barge access to Fraser Island. Enjoy local attractions suchas the Carlo Sand Blow and Double Island PointLighthouse(4WDaccessonly).
