For many years now, KLS Netherlands has been consulting with the various players in the market and providing the necessary innovations that support pharmacists in their daily work. It is for this reason that KLS Netherlands is a leading force as far as technical and software-related developments are concerned.

We were the first, for example, to develop a loading module that is not only automatic but can handle round items as well. KLS was the first to come up with a fully-automated packing machine. A fully automatic labelling machine was another of our firsts! In brief: KLS Netherlands was the first to make Central Filling fully and genui-nely automated. Providing an advanced system is not enough in itself, however, good service and proper training for your staff are also of great importance. concerned. Pharmacists and wholesalers such as you are confronted with ever-

changing regulations and market developments. This means your wishes and

Pharmacy of the Future

Innovative productsIn 1999 KLS Netherlands introduced the robot in pharmacies. The sophisticated KLS Robot has undergone further development in recent years. And that was not all. KLS was the only one to develop the fully automatic Central Filling system which takes care of the entire individual

packaging, labelling, bulk packaging and checking process on your behalf. This makes it possible for the pharmacy staff to focus on looking after the pharmaceutical needs of the clients. In addi-tion, this automatic process results in considera-ble savings in a number of areas!

The Medicomaat, KLS 3D and KLS TI are other, equally innovative products offered by KLS Netherlands. The Medicomaat enables clients to collect their medicines 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The device scans the barcodes on the medicine boxes and the client is automatically sent an e-mail and/or text message indicating that the medicines can be collected from the Me-dicomaat. All it requires is for a unique PIN code to be entered. The KLS Daily Dose Dispenser (KLS 3D) packs medicines in transparent bags in individual doses ready for taking. The plastic bag shows on what day and at what time the client needs to take the medication. Finally, there is the KLS Tablet Inspector (KLS TI) which checks the contents of the bags with medicines from the KLS 3D or a different dispensing machine.

’Pharmacy of the Future’ is an innovative all-inclusive concept we use to assist

pharmacists and wholesalers in the process of optimising their service and to

support them with all their logistics processes. In recent years, we have been busy

developing important innovations that make the Pharmacy of the Future possible.

It is therefore possible to fully automate various steps in the process. KLS Netherlands’ vision for the future includes making it possible to link up all the aforementioned systems. The Central Filling system dispenses crates containing bags for each patient with repeat medicines or crates with boxed medicines for the Medicomaat, while the KLS 3D automatically delivers rolls of bags with ‘daily doses’.

Our systems are therefore easy to manage with the use of intuitive software that offers an easy-to-grasp and user-friendly

interface. Needless to say, all our products come with a comprehensive, illustrated manual and we offer intensive guidance during the starting-up process. We also offer two training courses: one before the system is actually used and another a month after it has been up and running. As a rule, the real questions do not arise until people have started to work with the system.

Depending on the size of your pharmacy it can be worthwhile for individual pharmacists to purchase a robot from KLS Netherlands. We can help you assess the viability of placing a robot in your pharmacy. If it is technically possible, there are various ways in which you can ‘hide’ a robot in your pharmacy. Options include placing it one fl oor up or sinking it partially into the fl oor.

Loading the robotThe robot takes complete care of the acceptance of the goods received from the supplier/wholesa-lers. The pharmacist can place the medicines on the conveyer belt in a completely random manner. A unique feature of the KLS system is that it also accepts round containers. The robot automatically measures and scans the barcodes on the medicines and records the correct data in the central database. This is linked to the pharmacy information system, as well as the stock records.

The central database keeps a record of the dra-wers the various medicines are put in and when they are put there. The products are sorted ac-cording to shape and size (length). The medicines in the drawers are placed in random order. This facilitates a better unloading time. The robot takes the products from the drawer from above. This means that the robot can access every pack because there are no other medicines in front of it and also because the size of the packs does not affect the system. The robot does not need to reorganise itself, which means that it can work effi ciently 24 hrs per day.

The system rejects products that do not belong in the warehouse, such as damaged products and products with an unknown barcode. This results in an immediate and drastic reduction in the chance of errors. Depending on the size of the system, it is possible to store 5,000 to 26,000(!) products. The average loading time is 300 medicines per hour. Loading can also be carried out outside the pharmacy’s normal hours of opening.

Unloading the robotWhen a pharmacy assistant instructs the system to retrieve a pack from the system. The robot then proceeds to transport the pack to the drop-off point.

The way the pack is transported depends on your requirements, as well as the way your pharmacy is laid out. KLS Netherlands offers a number of different options. Conveyor belts with or without Medigliss being fi tted are one possibility. The Medigliss option makes it possible for medicines to be transported vertically to another fl oor. Another option is the use of transport pipes. This system transports the products under pressure quite literally through a system of pipes. This has the advantage that you can transport several products at once, depending on the diameter of the pipe. It is a system that is ideal for transportation along fairly long distances and therefore also if the warehouse is located on another fl oor. Another extremely fast and relatively cheap means of transport is the transport chute. The chute ensures that the packs arrive at exactly the right location.

Obviously the medicines and their packaging must still be in perfect condition after they have been transported. KLS drop-off point ensures that this is the case. The pack’s fall is broken by a special layer of foam.

It is imperative that pharmacists remain respon-sible for the dispensing of medicines. But that doesn’t mean that you cannot benefit from the in-novative technology that is generally accepted in

other lines of business. By working together in an area such as logistics, pharmacists can achieve substantial savings. KLS Central Filling is also a unique solution for wholesalers.

Central Filling involves packaging and labelling of (repeat) medication at an external

location. KLS has developed a unique, dully automatic system for wholesalers and

(individual) pharmacies that are part of a group: KLS Fully Automated Central Filling.

This system loads the medicines in a drawer, stores them in a warehouse, fills the

prescription, packs it in a small bag, labels it and checks the prescription. Central Fil-

ling is capable of automatically serving a large number of pharmacists.

Advanced software

The secret of KLS Central Filling lies in such features as advanced software that gives phar-macies and wholesalers the means of managing their prescription fl ow better. The very fact that the medication, dispensed by pharmacies, involves 50 to 70 % repeat prescriptions and predictable medication, makes it possible to cen-tralise much of the activities. Our systems are capable of communicating with every pharmacy information system.

KLS Central Filling takes care of all the individual packaging, labelling, bulk packaging and checking on your behalf. The system combines industrial reliability with the requirements pharmacists and wholesalers have with regard to good service in medicine distribution. UnloadingDuring the day the KLS Central Filling system selects fi les from the (individual) pharmacists or wholesalers that are affi liated. The robot re-trieves the parcels from the drawers and brings them to the Barcode Validation Unit (BVU).This unit scans the barcodes on the parcels and checks whether the parcels requested by the pharmacy matches the parcels retrieved by the system. This is done in order to reduce the risk of error of the system to nil. The system then proceeds to automatically stick the label (or labels which, in case of much information, are attached in an overlapping arrangement like roof tiles) on the correct medicine. The label is clearly legible and may carry the logo of the pharmacy. The Label Validation Unit (LVU) also carries out a check to make sure that the correct label has been attached to the right parcels.

Packing and visual inspectionThe Central Filling system now assembles the medicines intended for one patient into a plastic bag with the use of a packing machine. This bag is labelled and contains all the medica-tion the person concerned requires for a certain period. The bags used are transparent so that the pharmacist and the patient can both see what it contains and it is possible for further visual inspection and a safety check of the barcode to be carried out. The bags that emerge from the packing machine then end up in crates. A crate system ensures that the crates are fi lled per pharmacy.

In the near future it will also be possible to assemble the medicines in boxes. These boxes, which often vary in size, may also be placed in the Medicomaat

In practice the system of KLS Netherlands has appeared to be a combination of industrial reliability and intelligence software that flawlessly controls the loading module, the robot with warehouse and the packing and labeling system. Prescriptions, digitally delivered before 18.00 hours to Apotheek Zorgvuldig, are with every Dutch pharmacy before 8.00 o’clock the next morning.

Medicomaat: medicine dispensing point

If your client indicates that he/she would like to make use of the Medicomaat, a pharmacy assistant will note this in the pharmacy information system. The assistant will fi ll the boxes with medi-cines, attach a barcode and place them in any order in the Medicomaat. In the near future, the Medicomaat will also be linked to the KLS Central Filling so that the boxes are already provided with a barcode. This means that the machine will, in principle, be then able to be fi lled by anyone, so that fully trained assistants are no longer necessary.

The Medicomaat takes a mere 5 minutes to scan 360 boxes! The client is automatically sent an e-mail and/or text message indicating that his/her medicines are ready for collection. The cli-ent is given a unique pin code that can only be used once. Once the client has entered this code on the screen of the Medicomaat, the client receives the ordered medicines. The advantage of a unique PIN code is that the client does not need to remember an additional PIN code. When the next order is made a new unique code will be issued.

It goes as follows: when the medication has been placed inside the Medicomaat, the concerning client receives an e-mail, holding a single unique pin code. Subsequently the client can pick up the medicines at any time he wants. This extra distribution point is vandal proof. By using a special drum it is impossible for your hands to get stuck. In short a safe and service increasing means to the clients and within the pharmacy a work saving by the ‘direct’ delivery to the client.

KLS Daily Dose Dispenser(KLS 3D)

One of the newest KLS Netherlands products is the KLS 3D. This product is based on the techno-logy of Sanyo, which has been engaged for more than thirty years in the development of Daily Dose Dispenser. The KLS 3D supplies strips of transparent bags. Each bag contains the medici-nes as loose items due to be taken at a specifi c time while the details regarding the day and time of day the client needs to take the medication is shown on the bag. The bags are attached to each other and supplied rolled up in a dispenser box. Not only an ideal solution for the client, but also for the pharmacist.

The KLS 3D is a very simple system. You load the various medicines in canisters and place them in the machine, which proceeds to pack them in the bags. The KLS 3D can assemble 60 bags per minute. The KLS 3D is just as suitable for individual pharmacists as pharmacists that are part of a group and wholesalers. Home-care organisations and hospitals also fi nd this product useful. In the near future KLS 3D will also be linked up with the Central Filling system of KLS Netherlands.

KLS Tablet Inspector(KSL TI)

KLS also offers the KLS Tablet Inspector (TI). It can be used to check the contents of the bags with pills that have come from the KLS 3D or other dispensers. This guarantees the reliability of the deliveries. The KLS TI is able to check white bags as well as transparent ones. In addition to shape and size the device also checks pills on the basis of colour. With this latest technology, KLS Netherlands offers considerable added value in the form of reliable checks in comparison to existing systems. KLS TI analyses the pills on a scientifi c basis. The machine is very compact and can be placed with relative ease behind any brand of dispenser. One recognition machine can be installed for every two dispenser machines.

Calibrated ‘optical head’The KLS TI makes use of an ‘optical head’, that comprises a camera, a lens and lighting. Once the optical head has been calibrated it can be exchanged with optical heads on site. The advantage of this is that there is no need for all the medicines to be ‘learned’ again when a camera or lens is changed, as happens frequently. This is why it is also possible to create a central database of recognised pills that can be used by several recognition machines. These could be machines at different locations. The KLS TI is extremely compact and takes up very little space.
