THe maTcH upAfter back-to-back idle weeks, the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team hits the road for a pair of nonconference match ups at the Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. Dec. 31-Jan. 1 The Beavers’, which are making their second appearance the University of Minnesota’s holiday tournament will wrap up the 2010 calendar year with a 3:07 p.m., Dec. 31 affair with Ferris State University (9-7-3; 66-3 CCHA) before unwrap-ping the new year with No. 14 Union College (10-5-3; 3-2-1 ECAC) at 4:07 Jan. 1. Bemidji State (5-10-1; 4-9-1 WCHA) stumbled into the holiday break after a pair of losses at the Uni-versity of Wisconsin, Dec. 10-11. The Beavers scored two goals in the first 2:30 of the series, but that was where the offense ended. The Badgers battled back to win game one 3-2 and shut out the Beavers for just the second time this season to complete the series sweep, 2-0. Ferris State, which is unbeaten in five of its last seven games (4-2-1), is led in scoring by senior defense-man Zach Redmond (5-7=12), but the Bulldogs’ defense is responsible for the bulk of their success. On the shoulders of a 1.83 GAA from goaltender Pat Nagle, Ferris State owns the nation’s best scoring defense allowing just 2.00 goals per game, while its penalty kill ranks fifth in all of NCAA Division I at .879 (87/99). Conversely, offense is the name of the game for nationally-ranked Union. The Dutchmen rank fourth in the country posting 3.72 goals per game and their power-play is second to none this season converting over 34 percent (28-82) man advantage opportunities into goals. Sophomore forward Jeremy Walsh leads the UC scoring charge with 11-13=24 points.

THe rivalrieSWhen BSU meets Ferris State Dec. 31, it rekindles a series that got its start in 1999 but has been dormant since the 2005-06 campaign. The Bulldogs own a 5-3-0 advantage in the all-time series, but BSU has won three of the last five meetings, including the last (11/19/05), between the teams. A traditionally high scoring series, the teams have combined for less than seven goals just one time, while the Bulldogs have averaged 5.25 goals per game and have scored seven or more goals versus BSU on three occasions. The Beavers enter 2011 seeking their first win over Union reuniting with the Dutchmen for the first time since an Oct. 25-26, 2002 series in Bemidji, Minn. The Dutchmen own a 2-0-3 record versus BSU. Bemidji State met Union in the Mariucci Classic 12/30/00. UC and BSU played to a 2-2 tie; one of three ties and four overtime games in five match ups featuring the teams.

STaNdiNGS & raNkiNGSTHe coacHeSu Bemidji State’s tomserratore (Bemidji State ‘86) is in his 10th season has an overall record of 166-138-34 (.545) as BSU’s head coach. In addition to directing the Beavers to seven consecutive seasons of at least .500 hockey, Serratore’s teams have won CHA Regular-season championships five times since 2003-04 and made trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010, with a 2009 appearance in the Frozen Four. He is a five-time CHA Coach of the Year re-cipient and was Spencer Penrose National Coach of the Year Runner-up in 2009.uBobDaniels, who is in his 19th season at Ferris State, has lead the Bulldogs to a 299-341-72 record, which includes a 31-10-1 mark en route to the NCAA Tournament West Regional title game in 2002-03--a year in which Daniels was named National Coach of the Year accolades. A 1982 graduate of Michigan State, Daniels was a three-time Coach of the Year in the NAHL before becoming an assistant at Ferris State in 1989.uUnion’s 15th head coach, nateleaman, has led the Dutchmen to a 122-122-34 record in nine seasons behind the bench. League coaches forecast University of North Dakota as the preseason favorite casting 10 first-place votes for the Fighting Sioux (120), which held a 15-point edge over St. Cloud State University (105), despite the Huskies collecting two first-place votes. University of Minnesota Duluth rounded out the top three with 100 points.

all-america BookeNdSMattRead became Bemidji State’s 82nd All-America selection in the history of the program and second since the team made the move to the NCAA Division I ranks 12 years ago, when he was named RBK Second-Team All-America by the American Hockey Coaches’ Association, following a junior season in which he scored 19-22=41 points. This season, BSU again gained national attention when defender BradHunt was selected to the USCHO.com Preseason All-America Second Team.

lookiNG for No. 1The 2010-11 season marks the Beavers’ first in their new home--Sanford Center. With any new building, there is a first time for everything. Junior forward JamieMacQueen potted the first goal 1:52 into the Beavers’ Oct. 15 games versus North Dakota. Senior RyanCramerrecorded the first assist and was the first to sent to penalty box (at the 6:29 mark of the same game), and the Beavers garnered the first victory and shutout in their new facility Nov. 13, 2010 in a decisive 4-0 blanking of the University of Alaska Anchorage.

NeW kidS oN THe BlockBSU’s 2010-11 move to the WCHA marks the fourth league home for the program. The Beavers entered 2010-11 with a perfect 3-0-0 mark in their league debuts, but dropped their WCHA opener, 5-2, North Dakota. As charter members of the ICHA, the Beavers de-feated Lake Superior State, 3-1, Dec. 3, 1966. In its first season in the NCHA, BSU topped Wisconsin-Superior, 9-3, Dec. 10, 1980 and when the team moved to the CHA in 1999, BSU was victorious over Army Oct. 15, 5-2. The Beavers finished each of their previous inaugural league campaigns with a record of at least .500.

Home SWeeT HomeDespite getting off to a bit of a rocky start in its new hockey home--Sanford Center, BSU has won four of its last six home games. On the other hand, the Beavers have gained just a single win away from Sanford Center in 2010-11. The team is 1-5-0 on the road this season and have dropped its last four road games and has been out scored 11-20 on the road.

BSu 18TH iN all-Time WiNSBemidji State became the 18th program among the 58 current members of NCAA Division I to post its 900th all-time victory when it defeated Ala.-Huntsville, 3-2, on Dec. 15, 2006. BSU’s 971 victories currently rank 18th all-time among current members of Divi-sion I. Cornell is next ahead of BSU, in 17th all-time with 991 victories. Sixteen Division I programs have posted 1,000 wins, including 2010-11 BSU foe Minnesota which leads Divi-sion I with 1,624 all-time victories, and is the only program in the nation with 1,600 or more all-time wins, while Michigan is second with 1,513 victories.

keep ’em uNder TWoIn 2009-10 when BSU allowed its oppo-nents two-or-fewer goals, it was 19-1-2. BSU finished the 37-game season, ranked fifth in the nation in scoring defense, allow-ing a meager 2.35 goals per game, while giving up 2.22 in 18 CHA contests. This season, BSU is 5-1-1 when holding it op-ponent to two goals or fewer.

THree iS THe maGic NumBerIn 2009-10, three goals was a threshold for Bemidji State. BSU was 20-2-2 when posting at least three goals and 4-9-2 when allowing its rivals three or more. Already this season, the Beavers are 0-9-0 when allowing more than two goals and are 5-2-0 when scoring at least three.

THe early Goal GeTS THe WiNOf the Beavers’ 37 contests during the 2009-10 campaign, the team to score first won 27 times. BSU’s opponents won 6-of-9 (6-2-1) of the games they were first to light the lamp while BSU was unbeaten in 23-of-27 (21-4-2) occasions it was first on the scoreboard. In 2010-11, BSU is 4-5-0 when scoring first and are 1-5-1 when allowing their opponents to the scoreboard first.

BSu verSuS THe NaTioNally-raNkedIn 2010-11 the Beavers have already faced three of the nation’s top four teams. Oct. 15-16, BSU faced No. 2 North Dakota before BSU hosted No. 3 Minnesota Duluth Oct. 29-30 and No. 4 Nebraska Omaha Dec. 3-4. BSU is 2-3-1 versus the nation’s top 15 this season. Since the Beavers made the jump to the NCAA Division I ranks for the 1999-2000 campaign, BSU is 9-42-3 (.173) versus teams in the top-15. BSU had four meetings with nationally-ranked opponents in 2009-10. Nov. 27, 2009 the Beavers knocked off then-No. 1 Miami (Ohio) 3-2. BSU then swept a home-and-home series with No. 4 Minnesota Duluth Jan. 22-23 before falling to No. 11 Michigan in the NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinal.

read makeS iT BeTTerThere is really no way to get around it, the Bemidji State men’s hockey team is better when senior forward MattRead is on the ice. Since stepping on campus in the fall of 2007 Read has a plus/minus rating of +53 and the Beavers are 32-11-2 when he scores a goal, but ironically, BSU is 1-4-0 when he scores in 2010-11.

offeNSive defeNSemaNJunior defenseman BradHunt has been a big factor for BSU on both ends of the ice since becoming a Beaver in 2008-09. In addition to his duties in BSU’s defensive zone, he has been a true offensive threat--especially on the power play. As a freshman, he was third on the team scoring 9-23=32 points with a team-leading 7-16=23 coming on the man advantage. Last winter he had seven goals and a team-leading 26 assist to pace all BSU defenders, while ranking sixth among the nation’s top blueliners, with 33 points (0.89 ppg). His 17 points (5-12=17) on the power play again paced the team. This season, he has 10 helpers and seven have come on the man advantage. He is second on the team in power-play scoring.

With an assist Dec. 10, Read surpassed Luke Erickson (2003-07) to become BSU Division I-era (since 1999-00) scoring leader. In addition, he owns the top spot in assists (72) and is third in goals scored (50). Read is tied with Mark Kristo (1971-75 ) for 26th on BSU’s all-time scoring list. Kristo scored 65-57=122 point during his career at BSU.

100January 19, 2010, MattRead became the second-fastest player in BSU’s Division I history to reach the 100-point plateau (102 games).

THe HuNT for poWer-play GoalSIn two seasons, defenseman BradHunt has piled up 12 power-play goals, includ-ing seven in 2008-09, which matched a BSU Division I-era record for power-play goals by a defender. Hunt, who is without a power-play goal this season, currently sits just two goals on the man advantage from tying Clay Simmons (1999-02) for the career power-play goals mark at BSU.

peNalTy killerS...After giving up 10 power-play goals in its first five games (10-for-30), the Bemidji State penalty-kill unit has begun to come around allowing just two power-play goals in its last nine games, snuffing out 40-of-42 man advantage opportunities (.952), which includes holding opponents scores on the man advantage in eight of the last nine games. The unit has now climbed to .810 (64-for-79) in penalty-kill chances. BSU has allowed just two power-play goals in since Nov. 20--streak spanning 26 opponent man advantage opportunities. BSU has killed 92.3 percent of opponent chances during that streak.

freaky fridayBemidji State’s Dec. 3 victory over Nebraska Omaha was the Beavers’ first on a Friday this sea-son. In 2010-11 BSU is a meager 1-7-0, while the team has experience much greater success on Saturdays posting a 4-3-1 record in the second game of a series. THeN THere Were SixMattClimie, a 2008 graduate of Bemidji State and the Beavers’ goaltender in the 2005 and 2006 National Tournament runs, was called up to join the Dallas Stars Friday April 4, 2009 and got his first NHL start the next evening. More recently, Climie was called up and saw time with the Phoenix Coyotes Dec. 20. Climie’s trip to the NHL makes six products of the Beaver Hockey program to skate in the NHL ranks. He joins former BSU teammate andrewMurray(2001-05) as the only other former Beavers currently in the NHL.

THe key To a WiN iS BillBerGSenior forward emilBillberg has potted four goals in the first 14 games of his senior season, including one in the 3-0 victory Dec. 3. BSU is 3-0-1 when Billberg scores a goal this season and is 4-1-1 when he posts a point.

exTra aTTacker GoalSWith an extra attacker goal in Dec. 10th’s first period delayed penalty at Wiscon-sin, BSU has scored an extra-attacker goal in three of its last seven games.

our SHare of oTExtending their March 13, 2010 CHA Tourna-ment game versus Robert Morris to overtime, the Beavers played eight overtime games during the 2009-10 season, marking its most since playing in eight in 2004-05. In the 11 years since the Beavers moved to Division I, they have escaped overtime with at least a tie in 76.0-percent (58) of the 76 games that have needed extra time to decide the outcome. Since March 11, 2006, BSU is 9-3-13 in games extended to sudden death, including a 3-1-4 mark in extra-time games in 2009-10 and a 1-1-1 record in extra time in 2010-11.

ScoriNG from THe Blue liNeThe BSU defensive corps have been offensive as of late. The blueliners have posted 5-19=24 points and have contributed to the scoring in 11 of the Beavers’ 16 games. Seven of the eight defensemen that have seen the ice this season have logged at least one point. In addition, goaltender DanBakala has even recorded an assist in 2010-11.

aSSiSTaNce from THe creaSeNovember 12, BSU’s blueliners produced a goal and five assist including a helper from goaltender DanBakala. The assist was the second of his career and first to come from between the pipes for the Beavers since Bakala contributed to a goal versus Minnesota State Dec. 11, 2009.

WiNNiNG decemBerTraditionally the month of December has been rough for the Beavers. Since making the jump to the Division I level in 1999-2000, BSU is just 26-36-6 (.425), but has managed a .500-or-better record in the 12th month of the year during the last four seasons (14-6-1; .725). The Beavers need a win over Ferris State to continue that trend as they enter the Mariucci Classic with a 2-2 mark this month.

BSu oN olympic iceA trip to Mariucci Arena this weekend puts BSU in unfamiliar territory. The game mark just the fifth and sixth games on Olympic ice sheets this season and BSU is 1-3-0 in previous games. Traditionally playing on Olympic ice has not been a strong suit of BSU teams. Since making the jump to the major college hockey ranks in 1999-2000, BSU is 6-31-3 on the 200x100. With that said, BSU posted a 2-1-1 record on Olympic ice in 2009-10 earning a win and a tie at the Barry Ice Cen-ter in Marquette, Mich. before splitting a non-conference series at Mariucci Arena.

BSu iN THe mariucci claSSicBSU has participated in the Mariucci Classic one other time and ironically, the team met Union College. The Beavers are 0-1-1 in the holiday tournament. During the 2000 event, BSU dropped its opening-round game to Lake Superior State, 2-4, Dec. 29 before playing the Dutchmen to a 2-2 overtime deadlock.

As Bemidji State has made inroads in its devel-opment as a Division I program, its progress in the classroom has been remarkable. In its ninth year under head coach Tom Serratore, the BSU program has become an academic juggernaut, annually dominating the Academic All-College Hockey America honor roll. In addition, BSU has had 12 College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District V selections over the last seven years and has passed the NCAA’s first four Academic Prog-ress Rate performance checks with flying colors. Overall, the BSU men’s ice hockey team car-ries a cumulative GPA of over 3.5.

nCaaacademicprogressRateBemidji State men’s hockey received a score of 970 in the May 2009 release of the NCAA’s Aca-demic Progress Rate (APR) score. BSU helped the sport of men’s ice hockey achieve an aggre-gate score of 970, the third-highest of any men’s sport in the Division. The NCAA has established an APR cut rate of 925, which equates to a graduation rate of ap-proximately 50 percent, for all NCAA Division I sports. Programs which fail to meet the cut rate when 2006-07 numbers are added to the 2005-06 and 2004-03 data risk reductions in scholar-ships.

academicall-CHaBSU has led College Hockey America in Aca-demic All-CHA honorees each of the last eight years. BSU placed 18 skaters on the 2008 all-ac-ademic team, surpassing its own league record set in 2003 and matched in 2004 and 2006. BSU’s 17-member group for 2010 continued its recent domination of the Academic All-CHA Team. BSU has an all-time total of 140 Academic All-CHA picks and its 132 honorees in nine years under head coach Tom Serratore leads CHA by a significant margin.

CHastudent-athleteoftheYearKyle Hardwick was named 2010 CHA Student-Athlete of the year at the league’s 2010 awards banquet. The honor is the second to be garnered by a member of the BSU hockey team since the leagues inception. Andrew Murray became the first player in CHA history to be named Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year, picking up the historic sweep at the 2005 CHA awards banquet. Murray, a unanimous First-Team All-CHA pick, became the first BSU skater to be named CHA Student-Athlete of the Year.

academicall-DistrictVOver the last seven years, 13 Beavers have been honored on the CoSIDA Academic All-District V At-Large Team. In 2005, Peter Jonsson became just the second BSU men’s hockey player to be named Academic All-America. He was the only men’s hockey player in the nation to earn First-Team laurels in 2005. He was a two-time Aca-demic All-District V selection, so honored in 2004 and 2005. BSU’s other Academic All-District picks in-clude Riley Weselowski (2006-07-08), Andrew Murray (2005), Bryce Methven (2003-04), Bill Methven (2003) Travis Winter (2008-09), Cody Bostock (2009) and Kyle Hardwick (2009-10).

C onventional sports wisdom has long contended it is never wise to fol-low a legend. However, sporting a remarkable laundry-list of achieve-ments after nearly nine years as head coach at Bemidji State, it appears

Tom Serratore is more than comfortable in the role. The legacy Serratore was asked to continue upon accepting the role as Be-midji State’s seventh head coach in 2001 is one of the finest in all of collegiate athletics. Serratore walks by the trophy case on his way to practice each day, in full view of the 13 small-college national championship trophies enshrined therein, trophies won by future hockey Hall of Fame member R.H. “Bob” Peters. Serratore not only had the challenge of inheriting one of the true dynasties in the history of collegiate athletics, he also was called to oversee its growth into a Division I program. While Serratore will be the first to admit he’ll not be able to replicate Peters’ achievements, there can be little doubt the program is in the right hands. BSU finished 4-26-4 in 2000-01, the year before Serratore took control of the program. He led BSU to a 12-18-5 record during his rookie campaign and increased BSU’s win total each of the four years that followed. BSU finished 23-13-1 in 2004-05, giving the Beavers a school-record for wins in a Division I season and back-to-back 20-win campaigns for the first time as a Division I program. In 2008-09 Serratore led the Beavers through the regular season to post their fourth CHA championship in six years before their third CHA Tourna-ment championship, the program’s first NCAA Division I Tournament victory and a chance represent the university and the CHA in the Frozen Four for the first time. The 2009-10 campaign served as the Beaver’s last as a member of College Hockey America and Serratore’s BSU squad went out with a bang. The team posted a 23-10-4 overall record with a 14-3-1 mark in CHA play en route to the team’s third consecutive league regular-season cham-pionship and fifth in nine seasons as members of the league. Bemidji State capped the season by earning its first at-large bid and its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Under Serratore’s guidance, 28 BSU skaters have earned All-CHA honors, including two-time First-Team All-CHA picks Marty Goulet (2002-03), Bryce Methven (2003-04), Matt Climie (2006-07), Travis Winter (2006-07, Cody Bostock (2007-08), Brad Hunt (2009-2010) and Matt Read (2009-2010) with four Beavers earning CHA Rookie of the Year laurels. BSU has had multiple skaters named First-Team All-CHA seven of the last eight seasons, including a school-record three first-teamers in 2003. Academic excellence has been a staple of the BSU program under Serratore. The Beavers had a CHA-record 18 skaters named Academic All-CHA in 2008, and under Serratore’s guidance have a league-high 132 Academic All-CHA picks over the last nine years. Niagara is second with 103 selections in the same span. In addition, BSU has had nine CoSIDA Academic All-District V selections under Serratore, including 2005 First-Team Academic All-America selection Peter Jonsson. Serratore’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. He is a five-time CHA Coach of the Year, winning the honor in 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010 in 10 years as a collegiate head coach he has been named a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the American Hockey Coaches Association’s National Coach of the Year, five times, including a runner-up finish in 2009.

BeMIDJI,Minn. -- (Bemidji Regional Event Center) – The outcome was not quite as planned, but for the capacity crowd of 4,373 at the Bemidji Regional Event Center, Oct. 15, 2010 will go down as a dream come true. Friday the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey opened its new hockey home on the south shore of Lake Bemidji after years of dreaming, planning and building. No. 2 University of North Dakota may have gained a 5-2 victory over the Beavers in the teams’ Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) 2010-11 opener, but the true stars of show were the state-of-the-art building and the celebration of the tradition-rich program it houses, leaving those in attendance buzzing with excitement. More than 300 alumni traveled back to Bemidji from all corners of the earth to help BSU and the City of Bemidji initiate the building. After a brief introduction of many of the players who served as building blocks during the first five decades of the program, a torch passing ceremony, and ceremonial puck drop dedicating the Robert H. Peters Rink, the teams took the ice and the puck dropped on a new era in Beaver Hockey. JamieMacQueen (Jr., St. Thomas, Ontario) christened the building just 1:52 into the game, becoming the first male to net a goal in the new facility. RyanCramer (Sr., International Falls, Minn.), owner of the final goal in the John S. Glas Fieldhouse, BSU hockey home from 1967-2010, etched his name in the annals of BSU hockey yet again assisting on the historic marker. However, the lead would last just over 17 minutes, when Matt Frattin would score in the final seconds of UND’s third power play of the evening, sending the teams into the first intermission locked in a 1-1 tie. The second period was all North Dakota. Jason Gregoire sparked a string a three goals in a span of 9:29 when he potted an even-strength goal 5:06 into the stanza. Frattin added his second power-play marker of the evening 5:05 later (10:11) and Gregoire gave the Fighting Sioux a three-goal cushion heading into the third period at the 14:37 mark. Midway through the third period, the Beavers seemed to get a second wind. Sophomore JordanGeorge (F, Madison, Wis.) was the benefactor of a hard-nosed play by Jakeareshenko (So., D, Port Coquitlam, British Colum-bia), who wrestled the puck from a UND player on the corner. MattRead(Sr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) fed the puck up the ice to the speedy Ianlowe (Sr., F, Bradwardine, Manitoba), who then hit George on the doorstep for a nifty backhand over the shoulder of the North Dakota goaltender Brad Eidsness. But the Fighting Sioux slammed the door on any comeback attempt and reclaimed their three-goal lead when Frattin completed a hat trick at the 18:13 mark. The empty-net goal came with help from Even Trupp. In addition to out shooting the Beavers 38-14 on the evening, UND also held an edge on special teams. The Sioux were 2-of-5 on the power-play, while holding Bemidji State scoreless on four man-advantage opportunities.

BeMIDJI,Minn. -- (Bemidji Regional Event Center) – MattRead (Sr., Ilderton, Ontario) and the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team gave No. 2 University of North Dakota all it could handle in front of a capacity crowd Sat-urday at the Bemidji Regional Event Center, but the battle tested Fighting Sioux outlasted the Beavers to gain a 5-2 victory and complete the series sweep. Despite allowing UND to light the scoreboard first, Bemidji State posted a pair of power-play goals to erase a deficit and build a 2-1 lead early in the second period. However, UND caught the Beavers on their heels late in the period to skate into the third owning a 3-2 lead. A pair of empty-net goals late in the game stretched the UND advantage to three goals, cementing the victory for the Sioux. North Dakota got is power-play unit clicking early. Chay Genoway scored his first goal of the season 8:43 into the game, capitalizing on UND’s second man advantage opportunity. BSU would answer, tying the score at 1-1 before the end of the period as JordanGeorge (So., F, Madison, Wis.) netted his second goal in as many games with help from Ianlowe (Sr., F, Bradwardine, Manitoba) and BradHunt (Jr., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia). Just 5:46 into the second frame, Read posted the Beavers’ second power-play goal of the evening to put BSU up 2-1, but the advantage would be short-lived. UND got and got goals from Derek Rodwell and Evan Trupp, to take the lead for good. “Nobody likes to lose so if you go in the locker room right now, the guys are disappointed,” said Bemidji State Head Coachtomserratore. “They are competitive and wanted to win a hockey game. They feel they can win a hockey game. I don’t think they look at moral victories, but as a coach I want to make sure we are getting better. “We are a better hockey team right now than we were last night at this time and that is one thing I am happy with right now. “[Last night] we had no jump, no energy and we didn’t take care of the puck very well. I think our guys recognized that. Serratore added, “We had a lot of energy tonight, we fore checked well and we moved the puck around on the power-play so our special teams were a factor.” The Beavers finished the game 2-for-6 on the power-play, while holding a potent Fighting Sioux unit to a goal on six opportunities. Crediting a good morning video session and the opportunity to get on the ice and compete in live game situations Friday, Serratore displayed a sense of satisfaction in the way his team performed in the back end of its inaugural Wester Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) series. “I am never happy with a loss, but I am happy with the progress we made.” Another bright spot for the Beavers was the play of Read. “This was the best game Matt Read has played for us,” said Serratore. “I thought tonight Matt was the best player on the ice tonight. He had great depth to his game and played great defensively. The first goal we got, he won a huge face off. The goal he got was a big time goal. He played well on both ends of the ice and he was great on face offs,” added the coach. “All that came against the best team in the country.” On the wrong end of back-to-back 5-2 contests, North Dakota swept the Beavers league series for the first time since Feb. 9-10, 2007 when former Col-lege Hockey America (CHA) rival downed the Beavers in consecutive games.

BeMIDJI,Minn. (Bemidji Regional Event Center) – The Bemidji State Uni-versity men’s ice hockey team battled nationally-ranked University of Min-nesota Duluth to overtime and after several legitimate opportunities to earn their first victory at the Bemidji Regional Event Center, seemed poised to escape with at least its first Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) point, but the No. 3 Bulldogs got a goal to steal the game in the waning moments of overtime. “I was very proud of the resiliency our team showed,” commented BSU head coach tomserratore. “I thought the first 10 minutes was an ex-tremely one-sided affair. We rebounded, got a couple goals to tie it up and the momentum came back. I thought it was a good toe-to-toe in second period and in the third period I thought we actually carried play. “Good players make good play and Oleksuk had a heck of a nice tip there from Olson on that third goal.” The Beavers were sluggish out of the gates, stymied by a penalty to Jakeareshenko (So., D, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) just 27 seconds after the drop of the puck. That’s is all that one of the nation’s most potent line ups would need to get on the scoreboard. Mike Connolly scored his seventh goal of the season just 19 seconds later to put UMD up 1-0. For the next eight to nine minutes, the Bulldogs had their way with the Bea-vers, opening a 14-3 lead in shots on goal and dominating all aspects of play. A sheaWalters (Jr., F, Hibbing, Minn.) five-minute major penalty for contact to the head, opened the door for Minnesota Duluth to build a 2-0 lead. J.T Brown scored the Bulldogs’ second power-play goal of the night at the 10:03 mark, but until Oleksuk found the back of the net in overtime, the goal would serve as the high point of the game for UMD. Momentum began to build for the Beavers as they killed off the rest of the major. Less than two minutes later (15:19) senior captain MattRead (F, Ilderton, Ontario) cleaned up a rebound off the power-play shot of Ianlowe(Sr., F, Bradwardine, Manitoba) cut the deficit in half, 2-1. JordanGeorge(So., F, Madison, Wis.) knotted the game at 2-2 at the 16:59 mark on a nifty pass from Lowe to the right post. An evenly played second period was followed by a third period that fea-tured inspired, aggressive play by the Beavers in which they posted a 11-4 edge in shots on goal. Despite multiple legitimate scoring opportunities, the Beavers were unable to convert before the end of the stanza forcing the first overtime period of 2010-11 for either team. BSU again came out as the aggressor in overtime, but when the Bull-dog attach breached the BSU defense, BradHunt (Jr., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) was forced to make a play from behind to prevent a clean break away attempt. The junior was whistled for tripping on the play, forcing the Beavers to play a man short for the remainder of the game. Although BSU successfully killed 1:51 of the penalty, Oleksuk redirected a shot from Dylan Olson into the net with just 7.9 seconds remaining in extra time to keep the Bulldogs unbeaten (6-0-1; 3-0-0 WCHA). Aaron Crandall won the goaltender showdown posting 26 saves, while allowing two goal in the win. BSU’s DanBakala (Jr., G, Calgary, Alberta) was tagged with the loss despite turning away a season-high 31 shots. The win gives the Bulldogs a 19-9-0 advantage in the all-time series, while it stands as the first over BSU on the Beavers’ home ice since Feb. 26, 2005.

BeMIDJI,Minn. -- (Bemidji Regional Event Center) – No. 3 University of Minnesota Duluth and its goaltender Kenny Reiter kept the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team scoreless for over 58 minutes Saturday, but a late goal from emil Billberg (Sr., F, Stockholm, Sweden) was all it would take to push the game to overtime and garner the Beavers’ first point as a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. “To me, tonight was a very good tie,” commented Bemidji State head coachtomserratore. “I thought our guys had a gutty, three-minute span from about the seven-minute mark to about the four-minute mark of the third period where we finally applied some sustained pressure and Emil popped that one. So I am very proud of the resiliency of our guys.” Billberg’s goal came at the 58:29 mark of the third period when DrewFisher (Jr., F, International Falls, Minn.) won a battle on the boards and chipped the puck out to DanMacIntyre (Sr., D, Fort Frances, Ontario) who found the native of Sweden streaking towards the net. The Beavers and Bulldogs went toe to toe in a first period that saw UMD post a 10-9 edge in shots on goal, but each goaltender rose to the occasion stopping shot after shot, setting the stage for the remainder of the evening. The Bulldogs caught the first break of the game at the 6:08 mark of the second period when Bemidji State’s Fisher and BradyWacker (So., D, Jensen, Saskatchewan), who was also issued a 10-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, were each set to the penalty box after being whistled for cross-checking, setting a full two-minute 5-on-3 opportunity for the visitors. Not only did the BSU penalty-kill unit successfully snuff out the UMD power-play opportunity, it also held the Bulldogs without a single shot on next during the span. After 40 minutes of scoreless, well-played hockey, it was the felling of the BSU coaching staff that one goal was all it would take to win the game. So when Justin Faulk scored on the power play to put UMD up 1-0 just 3:51 mark of the third period, the Beavers could have thrown in the towel, but instead, the tally served as a wake up call. The Beavers turned up the intensity and began to generate offense by tightening thier defensive pres-sure. Ultimately, BSU’s hard-nosed play resulted in a change of possession and Billberg gave the Beavers the break they needed beating Reiter high on a one-timer from the right faceoff dot. In overtime, BSU went on the power-play just 43 second in, but it was UMD that recorded the best scoring opportunities putting two shots on net. Just as in regulation, MathieuDugas (So., G, L’Assomption, Quebec) was steady between the pipes for Bemidji State, and would turn away both chances and the teams would settle for the tie. In his first start of the season, Dugas piled up 28 saves, including 10 stops in both the first and the second period, allowing just the third-period power-play goal in 65:00 minutes of play. He moves to 4-2-2 in his career. His counterpart, Reiter, turned away 19 BSU shots and moves to 3-0-2 on the season.

(National Hockey Center) -- Sophomore forward JordanGeorge recorded a goal and two helpers, while senior captain MattReadadded a goal and assisted on another, but the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team’s first road trip of 2010-11 didn’t get off to the start the team anticipated. Despite climbing to within a goal of the hosting Huskies midway through the third period, 4-3, SCSU added two goals late to separate itself from the Beavers and claim a 6-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory Friday at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Read put the Beavers up early, taking passes from Jakeareshenko, who logged his first point of the season with an assist on the play, and George before beating the SCSU goaltender, Mike Lee, just 3:11 into the game. But the lead would be short-lived. At the 12:04 mark of the pe-riod, Drew LaBlanc ignited a run of four consecutive goals by the Huskies, stretching to the 8:33 mark of the second period, when he scored his second power-play goal of the season. Ben Hanowski gave the Huskies their first lead of the night just three minutes later (15:13) sending SCSU to the first intermission owning a 2-1 lead. The Huskies capitalized with BSU in the penalty box during the second period netting a pair of goals to extend their lead to three goals heading into the final stanza. Hanowski netted his second goal of the night, this time on the power-play, at the 6:08 mark of the second and Garrett Roe put St. Cloud State up 4-1 just 2:25 later. Sparked by a power-play goal by George in the opening minutes of the third period, his team-leading fourth marker of the season, the Beavers re-bounded to within two goals of the Huskies. Ianlowe continued the BSU comeback with an even-strength marker with 10 minutes to play, pushing the score to 4-3, but the Huskies got a goal from Aaron Marvin 1:24 later to snuff out any hope of a BSU rally. SCSU extended its lead to 6-3 in the closing moments of the game when Hanowski completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal. Out shooting the Beavers 33-26 in the game, St. Cloud State earned the victory with superior special teams play. The Huskies converted three of seven power-play opportunities into goals, while their penalty-kill until sty-mied three of four Beaver power-play chances. Lee piled up 23 saves in 60:00 minutes gaining the win between the pipes for the Huskies. His counterpart, BSU’s MathieuDugas recorded 27 saves, but allowed five goals and was tagged with the loss (0-1-1).

st.ClOuD,Minn. -- (National Hockey Center) Held winless though the first five games of the 2010-11 season (0-4-1), a team with the proud history and tradition of Bemidji State University was due for a victory. Saturday at the National Hockey Cen-ter in St. Cloud, Minn., it may have taken extra time, but the Beavers got it done earn-ing their first victory as a member of the WCHA, 3-2, over St. Cloud State University. The victory came in typical Beaver Hockey fashion: Hard-nosed play, a stellar effort by the penalty-kill unit and an opportune offensive attack. “I told the guys in the locker room this was the best regular-season win in the history of this program,” commented BSU Head Coach tomserratore after the game. “It was the way we did it. We flat out earned this victory. Period.” It was the Beavers’ top line of JordanGeorge, Matt Read and Ianlowe that willed the Beavers a win following a trend established through the first six games of the season. After Lowe netted the game-tying goal with less than three minutes to play in regulation, the trio again combined to generate the game-winner just 46 seconds into overtime. For the second consecutive night, George, led the team with three points. Saturday, he had a hand in each of the Beavers’ goals posting three assists. The Madison, Wis. native finished the weekend leading the team with 4-5=9 points. Two of his assists came on goals scored by Lowe, which included the game-winner. Read was also credited with a helper on the game’s final goal. For the third time this season, Bemidji State was the first to light the scoreboard and Saturday it took just 44 seconds. With Chris Hepp headed to the penalty box for tripping, BSU senior emilBillberg recorded his second tally of the season on the delayed penalty. But the lead would be snatched away as quickly as it was initially grabbed. Twenty-nine seconds into the Beavers’ first power play of the evening (1:11), St. Cloud State’s Nick Jensen netted a short-handed goal with help from Aaron Marvin and Travis Novack. After seeing a goal scored for each team during the first 71 seconds of play, the teams played the remainder of the period without a goal and skated into the first intermission tied at 1-1. The Huskies jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead 1:18 into the second period on a goal from Aaron Marvin. The even-strength marker would stand as the only goal of the second period putting the Huskies 20 minutes from what looked like a series sweep. Midway through the third period, BSU was whistled for a pair of minor penalties followed 31 seconds later by another setting the stage for a two-minute 5-on-3 opportunity for SCSU. But the BSU penalty-kill unit played water-tight defense for the first 50 minutes and would stand tall again killing the penalties and setting the tone for the remainder of the game. At the 15:32 mark, the Beavers got the break they needed. SCSU’s was whistled for a minor penalty putting the Beavers on the power-play. Forty-seven seconds later, Lowe scored the equalizer with 3:41 left on the clock to set up Bemidji State’s third overtime game of the season. Just 46 seconds after the puck was dropped in extra time, Lowe put a shot past the SCSU goaltender to give BSU the victory. BSU won the special teams battle Saturday and earned the victory because of it. The Beavers were just 1-of-5 on the power-play, but got the goal they needed when it mattered. On the flip side, the Bemidji State penalty-kill was lights out, backstopped by junior goaltender Dan Bakala . (Bemidji Regional Event Center) -- The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team scored twice in the first 45 seconds to grab an early 2-0 lead in its first ever meeting with the University of Alaska Anchorage, but the Seawolves rallied for a pair of third-period markers to edge the Beavers, 5-4, Friday at the Sanford Center. MattRead (Sr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) scored two goals, including his team-leading fifth of the season to give the Beavers a 3-2 lead midway through the second frame, but UAA responded with three consecutive goals put the Sea-wolves up 5-3 with 4:40 to play. Despite a goal by RadoslavIllo(Fr., F, Bystrica, Slovakia) late in the period, a comeback was not in the cards for the Beavers and UAA skated off with the one-goal Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory. “It’s a different type of game when you have all that scoring in the first minute and a half,” said Head Coach tomserratore. “We had a two goal lead early, but gave one up 45 seconds later and the momentum changed from there.” “Ultimately, the difference in the game was that they out special teamed us 2-1.” The Beavers potted a power-play goal for the third consecutive game, finish-ing 1-for-4 on the man advantage, but allowed the Seawolves to score on 2-of-4 power-play opportunities, marking the fourth game in 2010-11 that BSU has al-lowed multiple special teams goals. Just 27 seconds into the game, BSU’s samRendle (Fr., D, Grand Rapids, Minn.) opened the scoring by garnering the first goal of his collegiate career drib-bling a rebound off a UAA defender and across the goalline. Fifteen seconds later, Read found the back of the net with help from JordanGeorge (So., F, Madison, Wis.) and BradHunt (Jr., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) to put BSU up 2-0 after just 42 seconds of play. The Seawolves bounced back with a goal at the 1:27 mark when Daniel Naslund pushed the puck five hole on BSU goaltender DanBakala (Jr., Calgary, Alberta), but the Beavers would cruise into the first intermission owning a 2-1 lead. Alaska Anchorage got its second power-play opportunity of the night at the 2:23 mark of the second period and would need just 55 seconds to capitalize. After an initial save, Matt Bailey stuffed the first of his two power-play tallies on the night across the line at the 3:18 mark knotting the score at 2-2. After a Read goal on the man advantage put the Beavers up 3-2, Sean Wills tied the game, 3-3, on an even-strength goal with 4:49 left in the frame. The Seawolves opened the third period on the man advantage and turned the special teams chance into a goal just 26 seconds in on Bailey’s second marker. Fifteen minutes later, UAA would get the eventual game-winner off the stick of Brett Cameron (15:20). Illo’s goal at the 15:46 mark, the freshman’s first point in the green and white, rejuvenated the Sanford Center crowd and BSU bench, but the big, physical Seawolves packed in their defensive effort in the game’s final minutes and the Beavers’ rally fell short. UAA’s Rob Gunderson posted 26 saves in 59:52 between the pipes, allowing four goals in the victory, while Bakala was tagged with the loss after turning away 18 Alaska Anchorage shots conceding all five UAA goals.

The win not only allowed the Beavers to salvage a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series split, it also stood as BSU’s first win over the Sea-wolves and the inaugural victory in its new hockey home. “This was a good win for us,” commented BSU Head Coach tomserraotre. “We really needed a win.” He continued, “I am happy for our fans and I am happy for our guys.” “I thought this was the best game we’ve played this year,” said Read. “Words can’t describe the feeling of finally winning a game after struggling here for the first couple weeks. Knowing that you’ve just out played a team for the whole 60 minutes, playing a great game. Now we know we can do it and want to keep that momentum rolling.” For the second consecutive evening, the Beavers jumped to an early two-goal lead. Read got Bemidji State on the board just 17 seconds into the game. A pair of nifty passes from Jakeareshenko (So., D, Port Cocquitlan, British Co-lumbia) and JordanGeorge (So., F, Madison, Wis.) set Read up with the puck behind the UAA defense and the Ilderton, Ontario native beat the Seawolves’ goaltender Rob Gunderson high from the left face off dot on a tremendous individual effort. Midway through the period (11:19) JamieMacQueen (Jr., F, St. Thomas, Ontario) put Bemidji State up 2-0 when he redirected a BradHunt (Jr., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) from the point past Gunderson and into the back of the net. After a scoreless second period of play, BSU caught a break in the third when UAA was whistled for a pair of minor penalties just 28 seconds apart (12:27). The Beavers capitalized scoring 1:11 into the 5-on-3 power-play. Ianlowe (Sr., F, Bradwardine, Manitoba) was the beneficiary of quick perimeter passing by the Beavers as Read and Hunt found the senior in the high slot for a one-timer and Lowe connected for his fourth goal of the season. As the visiting Seawolves pressed to make up some of the deficit, UAA pulled their goalie en leu of an extra attacker, but Read stepped in front of an Alaska Anchorage shot and posted his second marker of the evening to stretch the Beavers’ lead to 4-0 with 3:32 to play. The lead would hold as Dugas denied all eight of UAA’s third period scor-ing opportunities to preserve the victory and collect the second shutout of his collegiate career. DenVeR (Magness Arena) -- Despite a stout defensive effort, solid goal-tending an early goal by freshman defenseman samRendle (Grand Rapids, Minn.), the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team was unable to hold on for a victory Friday at the University of Denver. The Beavers allowed an even-strength goal each period, which included an empty-net marker late, dropping the Western Collegiate Hockey Associa-tion series opener, 3-1, at Magness Arena in Denver. For the sixth time in nine outings, BSU was the first to light the scoreboard and tonight it was Rendle who drew first blood. Senior forward RyanCramer(International Falls, Minn.) turned a DU attempted line change into a 3-on-1 opportunity for the Beavers. JamieMacQueen (Jr., F., St. Thomas, Ontario) rang a shot of the pipe to cap the rush and the freshman defender corralled the rebound in the slot and netted his second goal of the season to put BSU up 1-0 at the 7:54 mark. Despite outplaying the Pioneers and controlling the puck for a majority of the first period, DU out shot the Beavers 7-2 and at the 16:25 mark, Matt Donovan evened the score. David Makowski found the blueliner with a drop pass in the high slot and Donovan fired a seeing-eye shot through traffic that snuck past BSU’s goaltender MathieuDugas(So., G, L’Assomtion, Quebec). After skating though most of the second period locked in the 1-1 tie, Ja-son Zucker scored giving the Pioneers their first lead of the evening at the 17:05 mark. Drew Shore got the play started winning a face off in the Pioneers’ offensive zone. He then dug the puck out of a scrum on the boards and found Donovan. The blueliner fired a shot on net and Zucker tipped, what would stand as the eventual game-winner, passed Dugas for his team-leading eighth goal of 2010-11. Opening the third frame trailing by one, 2-1, the Bemidji State penalty-kill unit was tested early and often. BSU was whistled for three penalties setting the Pioneers up with six minutes of 5-on-4 play, but for the second consecu-tive game, and the third time in four outings, BSU held its opponent scoreless on the man advantage not only snuffing out all three of DU’s third period op-portunities, but finishing the game 5-for-5 on the penalty-kill. The Beavers had a flurry of scoring opportunities in the third period de-spite being out shot 12-5 in the frame. Running out of time, the Beavers got the break they needed when DU’s John Ryder was sent to the penalty box for holding, setting the Beavers up with their second power-play opportunity of the contest with 3:24 on the clock. The Beavers lost the ensuing face off and struggled to gain control of the puck for the first half of the power-play chance, but during the last 40 seconds, had the Pioneers scrambling and racked up four quality scoring opportunities. With 1:30 to go, BSU pulled its goaltender to get an extra attacker on the ice, but with 27 seconds to go, Denver would put the game away on a Luke Salazar empty-net goal. Brittian was credited with the win, allowing just one goal in 60:00 minutes of play. He improves to 6-3-1 on the season. BSU’s Dugas was tagged with the loss, conceding two goals, while turn-ing away 26 Pioneer shots in 58:57 between the pipes. His 2010-11 record falls to 1-2-1.

DenVeR (Magness Arena) -- The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team battled back from an early 1-0 deficit to hold a one-goal lead at the conclusion of the first period, but a pair of rebound goals by No. 14 University of Denver vaulted the Pioneers past BSU, 4-2, Saturday at Magness Arena in Denver, Colo. After a 3-1 victory Friday, the win allowed DU to complete the series sweep of the Beavers marking the first time BSU has been swept in a road series since Jan. 16-17, 2009 at the University of Minnesota Duluth. “Tonight was very disappointing,” commented head coach tomserra-tore. “They are a good hockey team, we all know that, but we had a 2-1 lead and we it get away.” Denver got the scoring started at the 4:59 mark of the first period. With defenseman DanMacIntyre (Fort Frances, Ontario) in the penalty box for tripping, DU’s David Makowski made the Beavers pay on the Pioneers’ first power-play opportunity of the game. With assists from Luke Salazar and Drew Shore, Makowski fired a shot from the point that found its way into the back of the net to put DU up 1-0. But Bemidji State got the spark it needed with just under three minutes left in the first, when Chris Knowlton was called for elbowing. Serratore pulled goaltender MathieuDugas (L’Assomption, Quebec) for an extra attacker and the move paid off. At the 17:47 mark samRendle (Fr., D, Grand Rapids, Minn.) took a centering pass from sheaWalters (Jr., F, Hibbing, Minn.) and scored an extra attacker goal from the slot. Senior captain and BSU’s leading scorer MattRead (Ilderton, Ontario) was also credited with an assist on the play. Although the Beavers evened the score at 1-1, the penalty on Knowlton set BSU up for a power-play with 2:13 left in the frame. It would take just 41 seconds for the Beavers to grab their first lead of the evening. On a tremen-dous display of passing and patience, Bemidji State got a pass from emilBillberg (Sr., F, Stockholm, Sweden) out of the corner that was centered by JordanGeorge (So., F, Madison, Wis.) and Ianlowe (Sr., F, Bradwardine, Manitoba) connected one-timer from the top of the crease to account for a BSU power-play goal. In a second period that saw each team go on the man advantage on two occasions, the only goal of the frame came with 1:23 remaining and both teams at full strength. DU’s Paul Phillips fired a shot on goal that was initially turned away by Dugas, but the BSU goaltender lost the puck and the rebound was flipped over his shoulder for Nick Shore’s first goal of the season. The tally knotted the score at 2-2 setting up a third period, 20-minute chase for the win. Anthony Maiani put the Pioneers up 3-2 at the 7:10 mark of the third cor-ralling a rebound off the shot of Nick Shore and putting it past Dugas. The goal would stand as the game winner. With 1:18 left in the game, Bemidji State again pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker. The Beavers got a couple good looks at the net, but in an effort to clear the puck out of the zone, DU’s Jason Zucker fired the puck the length of the ice and buried an empty-net goal to solidify the 4-2 win and complete the series sweep. With the win, Denver extends its lead in the series to 7-0-0 and is a perfect 6-0-0 when hosting the Beavers.

BeMIDJI,Minn. (Bemidji Regional Event Center) -- The Bemidji State Univer-sity men’s ice hockey team opened nonconference play Friday hosting North-ern Michigan University at the Bemidji Regional Event Center. The Wildcats (6-6-2) stymied the Beavers’ offensive attack as goaltender Reid Ellingson turned away 37 shots to lead NMU to a 4-0 victory over the Beavers. Tied 0-0 through 17:30 of play, the Wildcats’ C.J. Ludwig was whistled for cross-checking penalty to set the Beavers up with their second power-play opportunity of the evening, but instead of giving BSU the spark it needed to take a lead into the first intermission, Bemidji State failed to record a shot on net and NMU took advantage of getting their skater back on the ice as Nicho-las Kosinski took a pass from Ludwig and scored 12 seconds after the penalty had expired. “This was a disappointing loss. We gave up the first two goals and that made it tough,” said BSU head coach tomserratore. “We had a few defen-sive breakdowns and one at the end of the power-play [in the first period] where our defenseman got trapped and we gave up a 2-on-1. You just can’t give up a goal with 18 seconds to go in a period. If you go into the locker room 0-0 its a just totally different game and the mind set is totally different.” NMU built a 2-0 lead with an even-strength marker at the 3:41 mark of the second period. Justin Florek led a 2-on-3 rush and fired a slapshot from the top of the left face off circle. While BSU goaltender MathieuDugas (So., L’Assomption, Quebec) kicked the attempt aside, the puck went right onto the stick of Phil Fox in the slot and he buried a wrister. Entering the third trailing the visiting Wildcats by two goals, the Beavers needed to generate offense early jump back into the game and get the 3,505 back on their side. Instead, NMU’s lead would grow to 3-0 just 2:11 into the frame. Erik Higby corralled a rebound off a Stephan Vigier shot and potted his second gaol of the season. Serratore pulled Dugas with just under three minutes to play in an attempt to shrink the deficit, but when Mike Maltese tipped a BSU pass out of the zone, NMU’s top scorer Tyler Gron won a footrace to the puck and got an empty-net tally with 1:34 to play to erase any BSU thoughts of a comeback. Special teams play was a non-factor in the game. NMU snuffed out all three of BSU’s power-play chances, while the BSU penalty-kill unit not only held the Wildcats scoreless on three opportunities, it allowed just one shot on net in six minutes of penalty time. Falling to 1-4-1 on the season, Dugas finished with 21 saves in 58:52 between the pipes. The win marks the first time Northern Michigan’s first versus the Beavers and evens the series at 1-1-1. The shutout not only stands as the first time the Beavers have been blanked this season, it is the first time the team has been held scoreless at home since Minnesota State University earned a 1-0 victory over the Beavers at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse Dec. 15, 2007.

(Bemidji Regional Event Center) -- Goaltender DanBakala(Jr., Calgary, Alberta) collected 17 saves and senior forwards emilBillberg (Stockholm, Sweden) and Ian lowe (Bradwardine, Manitoba) each posted a goal and an assist as the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team blanked Northern Michigan University, 4-0, to salvage a nonconference series split at the Bemidji Regional Event Center Saturday. “I thought tonight was a 60-minute effort for our team,” said BSU Head Coach tomserratore. “I was very proud of the way the guys came out on the first two shifts. I think we had a lot of energy and that set the tone for the whole game.” Although the Beavers failed to record a goal during the opening 20 min-utes of the contest, they enforced a fast-paced, physical style of play that would wear the Wildcats down as the game progressed. Bemidji State began to reap the benefits of its high-motor play in the sec-ond period. The Beavers out shot NMU 19-3 in the stanza, had three power-play opportunities and exited the frame with a 2-0 lead. Billberg, who was inserted on the wing of BSU’s top line Saturday, got the Beavers on the board just 94 seconds into the period. Alternate captain Ryanadams (Sr., D, Deloraine, Manitoba) won a battle in the corner and made a pass out of the Wildcats’ zone to Lowe. The senior forward skated the puck into the offensive zone and fired a shot from right face-off circle that was kicked out by NMU goaltender Reid Ellingson directly to Billberg who was on the doorstep an deposited the puck into a virtually open net. The goal, which would stand as the game-winner, was all the offense the Beavers would need as Bakala and BSU’s team defense shut down Northern Michigan. In addition to Bakala’s 17 saves, BSU limited the Wildcats’ offen-sive chances will good puck pressure and blocked 10 shots. Midway though the period, the Beavers’ would see their lead swell to 2-0 as BSU would capitalize on its second power-play opportunity of the evening. With C.J. Ludwig in the penalty box for tripping, Scott Macaulay was booked for high sticking at the 12:33 setting up a 57-second 5-on-3 chance. Jordan George (So., F, Madison, Wis.) and the Beavers’ power-play unit would need just 24 seconds to see their lead swell to 2-0. BradHunt (Jr., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) and Billberg were credited with assists on the play as Hunt unleashed a shot from the point that deflected off Billberg onto the stick of George who potted his fifth goal of the season. Lowe added an insurance goal, 3-0, with just 46 seconds to play in the game when he picked up an errant pass in the neutral zone and made NMU pay for pulling their goaltender. Holding the Wildcats scoreless on both of their power-play opportunities, the Beavers’ penalty-kill unit completed the weekend snuffing out all six of their power-play chances, while the team’s power-play crew was 1-for-5 on the man advantage Saturday and 1-for-8 on the weekend. Bakala, improved to 2-4-0 on the season posting the fourth shutout of his career. Ellingson made 34 saves in 58:53 between the pipes for NMU. He falls to 4-5-1 in 2010-11. Three of the four games in the history of the BSU/NMU series have been shutouts.

BeMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team got a 25-save shutout from goaltender DanBakala, while sophomore Jakeareshenko netted his first collegiate goal to push the Bea-vers past No. 4 University of Nebraska Omaha Friday at the Sanford Center. BSU got scoring contributions from nine players, while solid team defense, good puck pressure and a water-tight penalty-kill unit held Maverick offense, averaging over 4.5 goals per game scoreless on six power-play opportunities. “This was the best game we’ve played this year,” said BSU head coach tomserratore. “We played 60 minutes, we played very well defensively and we had our share of offense so overall I could not be happier.” Bemidji State set the tone early getting an extra-attacker goal by Aresh-enko. When UNO’s Pasko Skarica got caught holding a BSU skater midway through the first period, the Beavers saw a chance to get an extra skater on the ice. Brad Hunt dug the puck out of the corner and got it to JamieMacQueen who circled the zone before firing on net. Areshenko tipped the puck through goaltender John Faulkner’s five hole from his post just outside the crease. The goal turned out to be all the offense BSU would need as the BSU defense blocked 18 shots limiting UNO’s quality opportunities and as the Bea-vers’ last line of defense, Bakala was flawless. “I think we came to play tonight and they just weren’t ready for us in the first period,” commented senior forwardIanlowe. “We played a full 60 minutes and I think we out played them tonight.” “[Bakala] stood on his head tonight,” added Areshenko. “Even in the third period he was flying all over the net making saves. It was big time.” Bakala’s 25-save night was highlighted by a third period in which the ju-nior faced a flurry of UNO shots, piling up 12 stops in the final frame alone to post his fifth career shutout. After blanking opponents in his last two starts, Bakala has not allowed a goal in his last 124:40 between the pipes dating back to Nov. 12. He improves to 3-4-0 on the season. Leading 1-0, the Beavers were tested early in the second. Just 18 seconds into the frame, BSU lost its top defenseman in Hunt. The junior was assessed a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for checking from behind, to put the Mavericks on the power-play for the second time. But it would get worst for BSU. Struggling to kill off the major, MattRead was sent to the box for hooking, serving up the UNO power-play unit with more than 60 seconds of 5-on-3. But the BSU penalty-killers would stand tall igniting the 3,291 in attendance and fueling a second BSU goal. Lowe accounted for his seventh goal of the season at the 6:25 mark of the second stanza. The senior displayed tremendous drive as he was denied on his first shot from the slot before crashing the net and stuffing the puck past the UNO goaltender. The Beavers’ lead grew to 3-0 at the 8:32 mark of the third period when emilBillbergscored his fourth goal of the season to put the game out of reach. The solid play of BSU’s special teams gave the Beavers boost again tonight. In addition to posting a power-play goal in the second period, the BSU penalty-kill unit allowed just three shots on six UNO man advantage opportunities. (Sanford Center) -- Down 1-0 to No. 4 University of Nebraska Omaha after nearly two periods of play, the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team used a power-play goal by Ianlowe with 0.7 left in the second as a springboard to a 3-1 victory and its first Western Collegiate Hockey As-sociation series sweep Saturday at the Sanford Center. “It definitely feels great,” commented sophomore forward aaronMcleod, who was responsible for the game-winning goal. “Nebraska Omaha is one of the top teams in the nation right now so its definitely good to get two wins off of them.” He added, “I thought we executed well in the last 10 min-utes of the second period and then going into the third period we continued to skate and we got the win which was huge.” “We needed to start establishing ourselves at home. We really dug a hole for ourselves at home during the first half of the year,” said BSU head coach tomserratore. “We weren’t necessarily coming into the weekend looking to sweep, we just wanted to play good hockey. That is what it is all about. “The fans saw 120 minutes of not only great Beaver hockey, but exciting hockey this weekend. It was WCHA hockey at its finest.” Serratore continued, “The pace was great, there were a lot of great players on the ice, there were plays being made and it was physical.” The Mavericks drew first blood when Johnnie Searfoss fired an odd-angle shot from the goal line extend and the puck bounced off BSU goaltenderDanBakala’s right shoulder before finding the back of the net. The goal snapped a streak of 134:14 flawless play between the pipes for Bakala, stretching back to Nov. 12, but that was all the Mavericks’ top-ranked offensive attack would manage as the junior netminder buckled down and turned away 39 UNO shots in 60:00 minutes of play to even his record at 4-4-0 on the season. Bemidji State has not allowed a power-play goal in seven of its last nine games and is riding a streak of 33:33 of penalty time without allowing a goal. Although the Beavers earned the sweep, UNO continues to hold an edge in the all-time series 5-3-0, but the Beavers have gained victories in three of the last four meetings with the Mavericks.

(Kohl Center) -- Up 2-0 after just 2:30 of play Friday at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis., the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team saw the University of Wisconsin score three unanswered goals, one in each period, to gain a 3-2 victory and snap the team’s wining streak at three games. The Beavers jumped out to a lead just 2:01 after the drop of the puck. UW’s Jordy Murray was called for interference, but before the Badgers could gain control of the puck, BSU skated an extra attacker onto the ice and Ra-doslavIllo (Fr., F, Bystrica, Slovakia) took passes from DanMacIntyre (Sr., D, Fort Frances, Ontario) and sheaWalters (Jr., F, Hibbing, Minn.) and flipped a backhand over the Wisconsin goaltender Scott Gudmandson and into the net. With Murray in the penalty box it took the Beavers just 29 seconds to build a two-goal lead, 2-0. In his first collegiate visit to his hometown, JordanGeorge (So., F, Madison, Wis.) got his friends and family on their feet when he netted a power-play goal from Ianlowe (Sr., F, Bradwardine, Manitoba) and the Beavers’ Division I-era all-time leading scorer MattRead (Sr., F, Ilderton, Ontario), who pulled ahead of Luke Erickson (2003-07) with the helper. But the celebration was short-lived. The Badgers cut the lead in half, 2-1, before the end of the first period. Craig Smith capitalized on a penalty to Read at the 12:16 mark as he netted the first power-play goal allowed by BSU in 37:46 of penalty time--a streak stretching 20 opponent opportunities in six games since Nov. 20. Despite being out played for most of the second period, and out shot 7-1 in the first 10 minutes of the frame, the Badgers got the only goal of the ses-sion setting up a 20 minute race to the victory. Pogde Turnbull knotted the game at 2-2 with an even-strength marker on a wrist shot from the blue line that went off the fingertips of BSU netminder DanBakala (Jr., G, Calgary, Alberta) at the 12:12 mark. The goal would stand as the fulcrum point of the game as momentum would swing in favor of Wisconsin. The Badgers caught a break with 2:32 to play in the period when Walters was whistled for a five-minute checking from behind penalty, serving the nation’s second-ranked power-play up with a five-minute man advantage. BSU snuffed out the first 2:33 of penalty-time before the end of the second, but the Badgers still have over two minutes on the man advantage to open the third period. The Beavers would kill off the rest of major, but before the BSU player escape the box and get back into play, and with BradHunt (Jr., D, Ridge Mead-ows, British Columbia) just 30 seconds into interference penalty, Smith would net his second power-play goal of the night to give the Badgers a 3-2 lead. From that point, UW packed it in limiting Bemidji State’s quality looks. Gudmandson and the Badgers held off a late BSU charge as the Beavers elected to pull Bakala late, but Bemidji State was unable to find the net and dropped the first half of the series by one goal, 3-2. Wisconsin tallied a pair of goals on five (2-5) power-play opportunities, while it held BSU to one marker on three (1-3) chances on the man advantage. Gudmandson turned away 25 BSU shots and allowed two goals in 60 minutes between the pipes to improve to 6-5-1 on the season, while Bakala made 25 saves in 58:39 in net, but conceded three goals, saw his personal three-game winning streak in net come to an end and fell to 4-5-0 in 2010-11.

(Kohl Center) -- After scoring two goals in the first 2:30 of the series, the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team was held without a goal for the remaining 117:30 of its time in Madison, Wis., which included a 2-0 shutout loss to the University of Wisconsin Saturday at the Kohl Center. The Badgers used an even-strength goal in the final seconds of the first period to gain firm control of the momentum and would ride it into the third frame where it added an insurance goal to complete the series sweep and send Beavers to the holiday break with a 5-10-1 record overall and a 4-9-1 record in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play. Wisconsin gained the first lead of the game late in the first period. A BSU turnover on the blue line resulted in a 3-on-2 situation for the Badgers an they took advantage of the situation. In the end the trailer, Justin Schultz, found Michael Mersch on the right post with a back door pass and Mersch tapped his seventh goal of the season into the virtually open net. The teams would play through the second period without managing to change the score although Wisconsin held a 17-12 edge on the shot board through two periods. Leading 1-0 midway through the third (13:08), the Badgers got the benefit of a bouncing puck from Podge Turnbull to take a 2-0 lead and change the comple-tion of the game. BSU pulled goaltender DanBakala (Jr., Calgary, Alberta) with just under three minutes to go, but was unable to hold the puck in their offensive zone long enough to benefit from the extra attacker or generate any serious scoring opportunities. A night after power-play goals were the difference, special teams play did not play a role in tonight’s contest. The BSU penalty-kill unit held UW scoreless on three man advantage opportunities, while BSU failed to convert on its two power-play chances. Bakala was tagged with the loss after allowing two Badger goals. He junior turned away 23 shots in 57:51 of play and falls to 4-6-0 on the season. Wisconsin netminder Scott Gudmandson piled up 21 saves en route to posting the second shutout of BSU this season. He improves to 7-5-1. The win gives the Badgers a 3-0-0 edge in the all-time series and a 2-0-0 edge in games played in Madison, Wis. In the three games BSU has now logged versus the Badgers, they have managed just two goal and both came in the span of 29 seconds of last night’s series-opener.
