Head Coach Steve SertichSteve Sertich enters his fourth season at Bemidji State. In his first season Sertich led the Beavers to an 11-20-5 overall record and a 9-15-4 record in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play, good for a sixth-place finish. The 22 points he garnered during that first year was the most points Bemidji State has earned in conference play in its nine-year Division I era. He also led the Beavers to

its second win over the University of Minnesota in school history with a 2-0 shutout that was televised on Fox Sports Net North. Bemidji State compiled a six-game unbeaten streak, the longest unbeaten streak for the Beavers since the 2001-02 season.

Last year, coach Sertich compiled a 4-29-3 record and a 1-25-2 mark in the WCHA. The team recorded another shutout over a powerhouse, when the Beavers tied the then No. 2-ranked University of Wisconsin Badgers. This was the highest-ranked opponent to ever be shut out by a BSU squad.

Sertich came to Bemidji State University after spending 13 years as the head varsity coach at Roseville Area High School. He coached the Roseville boys’ team from 1993-2003, leading it to a 156-71-11 record and two Minnesota State tournament appearances. Under Sertich’s guidance, Roseville finished third in the 2002 tournament and second in 2003. He led Roseville to Suburban East Conference Championships in 2002 and 2003. Sertich earned four Coach of the Year honors, as he was named Section 3AA boys’ Coach of the Year in 1999, Section 2AA Boys’ Coach of the Year in both 2002 and 2003, and Class AA Coach of the Year in 2003.

In 2003, Sertich moved to head coach of the Roseville girls’ varsity team and in three seasons led the program to a record of 62-21-2. The Roseville girls finished fourth in the 2006 state tournament and captured Suburban East Conference titles in both ‘04 and ‘05. Sertich was named the 2004 Section 2AA Girls’ Coach of the Year. Sertich began his coaching career in 1976 as the head boys’ varsity coach at Northfield (Minn.) High School, and over the next 20 years he would hold a variety of head and assistant coaching positions at the high school, college and national levels.

Sertich began his playing career with the Colorado College Tigers in 1970 and assembled a standout four-year career.

Sertich was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1973-75, and played on a team which trained in Bemidji. He was also a member of the 1976 U.S. Olympic team, which finished fifth at the Innsbruck, Austria games.

He also played two years in the German Professional League, spending the 1974-75 season as captain for Fussen and two seasons from 1978-80 playing for Nurnburg.

Scouting Northeastern (cont.)• The only other non-win for Northeastern came at the hands of UConn in a 1-1 tie. Northeastern would go on to win the shootout in three rounds. • Leading the Husky attack are senior Lindsay Berman, D, and juniors Alyssa Wohlfeiler, F, and Kristi Kehoe, F. The three have combined for 15 of Northeastern’s 32 points so far this season.• Sophomore goaltender Florence Schelling has been clutch in net for the Huskies posting a .960 save percentage and a 0.99 goals against average in the five games Northeastern has played.

Series against Northeastern• This will be the third and fourth games played against the Huskies. Last year was the first time the two teams met, playing twice in Bemidji.• Neither team holds the advantage in the series as both games ended in ties last year. The first game ended scoreless 0-0, while the second game ended deadlocked at two goals a piece.• The Beavers are currently 3-5-3 against Hockey East teams.

Tremendous Trio• Erin Cody (For., Roseville, Minn.) (0G, 2A), Erin Johnson (For., Farmington, Minn.) (4G, 0A), and Annie Bauerfeld (For., Woodbury, Minn.) (1G, 4A) have accounted for nearly all of the offensive production so far this season for the Beavers.• Three of Johnson’s goals have come on the power play. • The three were the top scorers in the 2008-09 season; Cody (12G, 16A), Johnson (10G, 11A), and Bauerfeld (8G, 13A).• They provided for the majority of the offense on special teams scoring a combined 11 out of a total 18 power play goals, also accounting for all the shorthanded goals. • Their production on the power-play will be a key to the success for the Beavers this season.

Slovakian Sensation• Beaver goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova (So, Bratislava, Slovakia) has made one appearance this season gathering 134 saves on 146 shots. She currently has a .918 save percentage on the season while recording a 3.01 goals against average.• Her shutout against Wisconsin on Oct. 10, 2009 was the second time Bemidji State has recorded a shutout against the Badgers.• She was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct.14-20. She now has a total of four defensive player of the week awards after garnering three in a row last year.• Tomcikova will be playing for the Slovakian National Women’s Hockey Team in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.• Her success on the ice last year didn’t go unnoticed as she was the first player in WCHA history to be honored with Defensive Player of the Week three times in a row (Dec. 10 - Jan. 7). • She was also named to the 2008-09 All-WCHA Rookie Team and 2008-09 All-WCHA Second Team, which was the highest individual award won by a BSU women’s hockey player.

D-Line Express• Jackie Robertson (Def., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) returns for her senior season as one of the team captains. Robertson anchors the blue line this season as the oldest and most experienced member of the D-line. • Robertson’s physical game makes it tough for opposing players to beat her on the rush. Her intimidating style of play helps bog down opposing breakouts and creates turnovers for the Beavers.• Sisters and defensive linemates Erika Wheelhouse (Fr., Crookston, Minn.) and Marlee Wheelhouse (So., Crookston, Minn.) recorded a total of 32 blocks over the past tweo weekends against Wisconsin and Ohio State. Including a total of 15 blocked shots in the 1-0 shutout against the Badgers.

Veteran Sophomores• Bemidji State has 10 sophomores that all saw action as true-freshmen last year.• Montana Vichorek (Def., Cloquet, Minn.) was recognized by the WCHA last year garnering Rookie Player of the Week on Jan. 28, 2009. • Vichorek led all freshmen and was third on the team in scoring with 13 points (3G 10A).
