Jean VARRA_ INA 2008 2
What is it?
A technical solution for an effective protection of videos covered by a copyright
Developed by INA research teams. This innovative technology is based on a
signature, a digital finger print which constitute a unique genetic code for a sequence of images.
It is not a watermarking solution.
Jean VARRA_ INA 2008 3
Why ? For Whom?
why? TV broadcast monitoring
Content filtering on UGC (User Generated Content) sites
Filtering at end-user level
who? Rights holders
Broadcasters
UGC sites
ISPs (Internet Service Providers)
Jean VARRA_ INA 2008 4
How does it work?
accepted on-line content
accept / reject / manage
reference content signature base
comparison of signatures
candidate signature streams
content to be protected
sales / broadcast
www.sharedvideos.com
various transformations

Some technical info Signature is based on spatial and temporal information computed from
the video (no audio) Robustness Accuracy Scalability
The signature comparison process uses a specific data structure to allow scalability.
The SDK (Software Development Kit) is available, with sample codes and usable binary files, ready to be integrated into any information system:
sig_sign sig_index sig_match

A scalable systemNon-regression test:4x24 hr TV contentversus3,000 hr reference base= zero false alarm
Currently in operation at Ina(monitoring of terrestrial broadcasts)
10 TV channels versus 200,000 excerpts= 3 PCs (3 year old)for the system core

An actual reference
The only system in operation since 2005 for terrestrial broadcast monitoring
Resulted in substantial re-invoicing for Ina Solid integration in Ina workflow and information system.
Jean VARRA_ INA 2008 17
Business model and references
Very low investment for content owners
Possibility of using a service provider to compute signatures
Software license by processor for the UGC / video sharing sites
References- Partnership signed with Daily Motion - Currently under test with Internet content platforms- Canal+ adopted the Signature technology mid-July- Undergoing discussions with content owners in Europe / US- MPO and CJI will provide signature computation services to content owners; - discussions in progress with other technical service providers
