He may not have a band, but we’d imagine he’s got a pretty big fan base anyway. UW alum-nus Dave Matthews graduated in 2000 and has spent the last four

years working for Accenture, a world leader in global management consulting, technology services, and outsourcing.

As a student, Matthews interned with Go 2 Net, and his internship evolved into a full-time position after graduation. Mat-thews explored the technological aspects of business with Go 2 Net, and after a few years he felt successful, but too comfortable. “I missed having a challenge,” Matthews said. “It’s important to me to have the opportunity to continue learning and working on areas where I can better myself as an employee.” His passion for connecting with people led him to consulting and Accenture.

He currently works in management consult-ing, focusing on talent and organizational per-

formance management. Translation: Matthews works with other companies to improve their workforce. (Don’t worry, he had to explain it to us, too.) The goal of his work is to create a positive working environment that allows employees’ passion to carry into their work life and thereby improve their performance.

One of Matthews’ most rewarding experi-ences with Accenture was working to reform Texas’s health care system after it was over-whelmed by Hurricane Katrina victims in 2005. “You can’t ask single mothers to find a baby sitter, skip work, and stand in line all day just to fill out two forms,” Matthews says. For over nine months, he worked with state government in Austin, helping rebuild the system’s intake method, creating phone and online resources.

During this time Matthews flew to Austin every Monday morning, and returned to Seattle every Thursday evening. “This job takes a lot of focus, and sometimes involves long hours and some sacrifice,” Matthews says, and “moving from project to project, can involve

some uncertainty about what’s next. But it’s worth it. This job is incredibly rewarding.”

Is Dave Matthews where he thought he’d end up when he entered college? The encour-aging answer is, yeah, pretty much. He always knew he wanted to have a business career, but he had to decide which avenue to pursue. Matthews made an effort to get involved early on in his college career, sampling different experiences to find what was right for him. “The path may have changed a bit,” he says, “but the destination is the same.”

Matthews advises UW students to take initiative and use their college years to try a lot of different things. “Pursuing different experiences will help you find your passion,” he says, and ultimately, isn’t that what we’re all looking for?

Successful, happy, and making a difference. He may not be the one playing to a sold-out crowd at the Gorge this summer, but this Dave Matthews is rocking our world.
