LEARNING OBJECTIVES
HSS continuing medical education activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the completion of the course, the participants will be able to:
■ Discuss the role of simulation and evaluation in surgical training. Participants will list and follow steps to incorporate simulation and evaluation into their teaching and leadership style.
■ Describe and implement best practices for interactive leadership, management, and teamwork.
■ Describe the role of pain sensitization and its link to inflammation and chronic pain in osteoarthritis. Participants will also identify new therapeutic approaches that are under development.
■ Discuss the pathophysiology of infections and the emerging methods of diagnosis and treatment. Participants will be able to properly diagnose and treat these infections in practice.
STATEMENT OF NEEDThe field of musculoskeletal medicine is a constantly changing discipline. New treatments and techniques are constantly being developed, and the effectiveness of current methods is continually being evaluated. Clinicians must remain up-to-date on information regarding newly developed therapies and existing treatments for musculoskeletal conditions to continually improve their professional practice. In addition, they should be familiar with a systematic framework to determine when new technology is or is not in their patients’ best interest. To assist its alumni in this endeavor, Hospital for Special Surgery hosts the Alumni Association Meeting each year, which allows the hospital’s alumni to share best practices in musculoskeletal medicine and collectively address emerging topics. While there are many emerging topics to address within the field of musculoskeletal health, the Alumni Association Planning Committee identified select professional practice gaps to focus on at the 100th Annual Alumni Association Meeting, including hand, tendinopathy, osteoarthritis, spine, and sports medicine. The subjects below represent select professional practice gaps identified by the Alumni Meeting Planning Committee after reviewing participant evaluations from the 2017 meeting.

■ Describe the history of HSS Comprehensive Arthritis Program, currently known as the Surgical Arthritis Service, and lessons learned from the service such as the value of interdisciplinary collaboration. Participants will advocate for and be able to apply collaborative efforts in practice.
■ Describe the role of inflammation and the potential therapeutic targets for tendinopathy.
■ Describe the evolution of technology in radiology and its influence on different teaching and learning styles in musculoskeletal imaging.
■ Report key components of the history of sports medicine and identify various goals to make a medical practice successful to ensure the best patient outcomes.
■ Describe WALANT and the pros and cons of it as a form of anesthesia during hand surgery. Participants will report and be able to implement tips and tricks to maximize results in practice.
■ Report the management strategies for fingertip injuries and when each strategy is indicated. Participants will determine when to use each strategy in practice.
■ Describe optimal treatment options for chronic irreparable rotator cuff tears. Participants will be able to develop a treatment algorithm that considers symptoms, function, expectation, and patient age.
■ Describe the pathomechanics of ACL failure from a biological, alignment, graft selection, graft position, and rehab perspective.
■ Identify the current controversies surrounding minimally invasive spine surgery, such as the complications and learning curve associated with minimally invasive surgery, and its role in different spinal pathologies. Participants will determine when minimally invasive surgery is indicated.
■ Describe the decision-making process when opting for fracture arthroplasty versus ORIF. Participants will define the indications and determine when each treatment approach should be used in practice.
