Details concern-ing these -programs will follow.The summer months of 1976 wereprofitable, as various members con-tinued their respective projects oftracing and preserving the historyof the Rockaways. Many interviewswere made, while the society's his-torical file continued to grow,thanks to many fine donors. Also,several meetings were held concern-ing the various alternatives whichmay be used to restore and preservethe John Jacob Faesch House at Mt.Hope. Hopefully, this Fall wewill see some added progress onthis important project.As I begin my second year asPresident of this Society, I wouldlike to thank each and every per-son who has helped our small butactive group, and ask for every-one's continued support and in-terest.UPCOMINGEVENTS

    where to locate documents of pastand distant relatives. Non-mem-bers are encouraged to join us forthis exceptionally informative eve-ning. Circle Nov. 4 on your calen-dar! ThFit evening the Societywill 'Oresent Historic Ni te, 7:' 30p.m. at the Hibernia Firehouse onGreen Pond Rd. A slide show, nre-'Oared by the Society through agrant from the Rockaway TownshipBicentennial Committee, will ex-plore many of the historical homes,churches and buildings locatedwithin our boundaries. Old photo-graphs, rare documents and memor-abilia of the mining industry ofyesteryear will be on display.The Rockaway Tw'O. bicentennialquil t, hand-s:ewn by a group ofresidents, will be exhibited.If your family just yawnswhenever you tell your favoritestory of "those good old days",come and tell it to us on Nov. 4;we'd love to hear it!Bic~ntennial QuiltA recention was held forthe women who had hand-sewn eachof the squares of the Rkwy. Twp.Bicentennial Quilt, which depictshistoric homes and notable land-marks throughout the Township.Guests at the reception also in-cluded many of the families wholive in the homes that were pic-tured on the quilt. The quiltis the work of 40 Township res-idents, ranging in age from 15-79 years, under the supervisionof Sally Mueller. A historicalsynopsis of each building shownwas prepared by Society member,

    On July 7 Patricia White,renresenting the Society at theTownshi-oCouncil meeting, was pre-sented with the collection of nhoto-graphic slides of Township Landmarksfrom Sheila Dunn of the BicentennialCommittee, which sponsored the slideproduction. Ms. White then showedthe program to the Council members.This slide show will be made avail-able for showing to any interestedgroup simply by request thru theSociety's mailing address.Coming u-o: George Coulthardwill show our slide nrogram to theRockaway Twn.     There was a tremendous"hapnening" in Rkwy. Twp. onSunday. May 30: the RockawayTwp. Bicentennial Comm. pre-sented an old. fashioned Amer-ican picnic. .Over 3,000 people ra-diAted more warmth and bri-ehtness than any sunshinecould ever provide. "Seeingwas believing"~ To all thegroups and individuals whohelned, participated and.att-ended-a most sincere thank-you.The day was successful becauseof each of you. We have much tobe -oroudof. Several members are now sav-ing all news artic1.es.~ pertaining tothe Rkwys. from various local news-papers.Our historical collectioncontinues to grow. It is amazing tosee how m&ny fine old ~hotos keepturning up in unexpedted places.We would like to thank all who havedonated or loaned pictures to liS.A photographic history must bepreserved.Our small IDellibership has limjted ourability to maint~in our on-goingprojects while undertaking new largerprojects such as the preservation ofthe J.J. Faesch manor house. It isour hope to increase the membershipby increasing publicity thru a bi-monthly Newsletters beginning in June.I would like to extend an invitationeveryone interested in the historyof tLe Rkwys. to come to one of ourmeetings and rediscover the historyof this important area of Yorris cty.RKWY.TwP. BICENTENNIAL QUILTAlthough the Bicentennial celebra-tions are now just fond memories,our Society has a visihle reminderof our Nation's birthday in theform of a Twp. quilt. This gift,prepared by forty dedicated amateurseamstresses, is on display at theTwp. library in Hibernia. SallyMueller, coordinator of the quiltmaking, has volunteered to exhibitthe quilt at special affairs forinterested qroups. Requests for thedisplay can be made thru our Society.Eleanor Mason wrote a history ofevery building and site portrayedon the quilt which is available inbooklet form with a postcard of the

    quilt for S1.50 at the Hibernia Library.RK~I.TWP. HISTORIC NITEBack by popular demand! Everyone isinvited to Rkwy.Twp. Historic Nite,Mav 9at 8Pm at the White Meadow Lake Club-house. Come and discover the historicalroots of the development of the Twp. Theevening will provide a slide show of Twp.landmarks and a dis~l[y of old photos,mining memorabilia and historical arti-facts. The Bicentennial quilt will alsobe on display. The Society has preparedan informative evening for area residentsof all ages.     TorR CIRCUITPat White lectured two 6th grade glassesat the Birchwood School on the mininghistory of this area. The t~lk was wellreceived and the children were eager tolearn the Town heritage.Slide shows of Twp. historic landmarkswere presented to Morthern Area SeniorCitizens and Birchwood PTA. The evening was very in-formative for all.DID YOU KNOW?This new article in our Newsletterwill contain brief histories ofsome of the many points of interestin our area. We hope you enjoy it.The Rkwy.Twp.Library was built fora Methodist Episcopal Church in 1869and later was purchased by the HolyTrinity Lutheran Church in 1952.The Lions Club ourchased the propertyand presented it to the Twp. for useas a free public library in 1970. .The 1st public library was locatedin a closet of the !,'arcellaComnnm-ity Club from 1954-1966, then movedto one of the roms in the'basementof the Hibernia Grammar School andlater eX'Janded to inc11,de 2 rooms.It was at this time, with increasedstudent enrollment, th8t the Bd. ofEd. req"ested the rO'filS be turnedback for classroom spi.ce snd thelibrary found itself without ~home. Thrk the efforts of WalterAdler and interested residents and~embers of the Lions Club, the lib-rary moved to the Cll1 rch buildine:in Hibernia.

    The library has once again outrrown itsquarters and now has a branch in theWhi te f~eadow Lake Clubhouse &nd anotherin the Birchwood School to acrornmodatethe incre&sing number of residents.Microfilm, magazines, reference metterialand over 30,000 volumes of books plusstory hours and movies are available.
