Snapshot: An informative session for developing strategies to reduce stress in your family.
Description: When is enough, enough? When is quitting sometimes the better option? What is the difference between self-control and self-regulation? Although answers are still elusive to some of these questions, self-regulation provides guidelines and ideas, based on psychological frameworks and research on how to work with your child’s brain, not against it. Insights about behaviour patterns, environmental influences, and brain chemistry all link back to the basic idea that the ability to self-regulate is crucial. Snapshot: A session for homeschoolers planning to homeschool their child through high school, with emphasis on how high school and preparing for postsecondary work together.
Description: Homeschooling through high school is a daunting proposition for many families. How do we know we’ve done enough? How do we know if we’ve covered the right things? Will the subjects we’ve studied be recognized by postsecondary institutions so our child can get the further education and vocation they desire? All of these are valid questions, but they should not paralyze the homeschool parent or scare the family away from trying. Some HSLDA staff have successfully graduated high school students from home and can share their varied experiences of what they did and how well it worked.

THE GAP YEAR ADVANTAGE
Audience: Parents of high school students or high school students

Snapshot: A session packed with resources for high school students to take a fulfilling year off before finishing high school studies or postsecondary training.
Description: Nothing brings more thrill to a student’s ears than the words exchange, travel, and GAP Year. Though the GAP year originated in Europe, it has gained popularity more recently in the West and for good reason. This time of personal development may take on many forms including any combination of volunteer work, compensated employment or internship opportunities. Gap years can be beneficial for indecisive students, as a time of career exploration and gainful employment. Rather than enrolling in an expensive university program, students can narrow their focus and enter into a postsecondary institution and course of study that aligns better with their skills and abilities. Find out practical ways to make your teen’s GAP year a success and if a GAP year is the right fit for your student.
