HS&E ComplianceAn alternative approach

About us• The P&G community includes operations in

approximately 70 countries worldwide.• P&G serves consumers around the world with

one of the strongest portfolios of trusted, quality, leadership brands.

Outline• Objectives• HS&E Program Overview

– Structure– Systems Approach (our version of ISO)– Legal Compliance Audits (LCA)– Key Element Assessments– Special Programs

• Results/Examples• Questions

Objectives• Describe our new approach to delivering HS&E

compliance

Traditional HS&E Structure• One Global HS&E Leader

– Regional HS&E Leaders• Business Unit Leaders

–Site Level Leader»Module Level Owner

• Line Level Coordinator

One Focus – Continual Improvement of HS&E Results (including 100% compliance)

Safety in not a priority!Priorities come and go, safety is a fundamental component of everyone's job, a base expectation.

- Yannis Skoufalos

Principles• Nothing we do is worth getting hurt, we just

make soap

• Safety is only as good as what you are willing to walk past each day without confronting

• Make the safe way the easy way

Original Structure

Theory of constraints• We had HS&E Specialist advising sites on

HS&E program management & compliance support

• We had the same resources advising projects on HS&E permitting and safe design

Projects often on tight timelines with hard deadlines – made it difficult for single resource to manage across both program management and project support.

Things that did not change• Commitment to ensuring safety with our existing

programs, Like:– Legal Compliance Audit Program, 3 reviews:

• Internal LCA - Done annually by Sites (Checklist)

• LCA Corporate Done - periodically by Site with External P&G Resource

• LCA with third party legal team - Done less frequently depending on complexity of site

Things that did not change• Site HS&E Programs

– Systems approach like ISO, but designed by P&G

– Meets ISO equivalency tests (very few sites with ISO Certifications)

Things that did not change• HS&E Program Audits (KEA)

– Done by trained and qualified people– Done annually by Sites– Done periodically by Site with

External Resource (calibration)

New things• Organization Structure• Approach to work• Tools• Measures for new organization

Original Structure

New Structure:Two HS&E Departments

1) Site HS&E Program and Compliance Focused (GTM)

2) Initiative Pipeline Focused (GI)

New Approach:• New FLRA tool (replaced old DRWO tool)• Simplified approach with focus• Built into R&D work process, “required to

Graduate” criteria• Seamlessly integrated into existing Engineering

Work Process• Focus on delivering new capability “HS&E Ready”

Examples• Cobots

• Zn Dangerous Goods

• Machine safety
