Greetings Parents and Families of TCS -

My name is Steve Palmer and I’m extremely honored to join the team of The Cottage School as the

new Executive Director. I’m very passionate about education and I look forward to partnering with

you to provide our students with a rigorous, engaging, and high-quality middle and high school

experience. As the parent of a son and daughter ages 22 and 20, I recognize the importance of a

strong home-school connection. Parents are every child’s first teacher and I believe that by working

together, we can make sure your child’s social, emotional, and academic needs are met.

Before joining TCS, I served in a variety of teaching and educational leadership roles over the past

20 years. Some of the roles I have held include classroom teacher, coach, Principal, Director,

Founder and Superintendent of a number of schools. My academic background includes a Doctoral

candidate in Education, a Master of Science in Educational Leadership, a Master of Science in

Counseling, a Bachelor of Science in Education and minor in Business, and a Certificate from three

states in Special Education and Educational Leadership and Administration.

The philosophy I live by is that all children are a gift and we as educators need to teach to their

strengths and cultivate their weaknesses. I also believe in helping children experience a positive and

realistic perception of themselves and a strong commitment to community. I think “abilities not

disabilities.” Education is all about children.

Finally, I want to congratulate Dr. Jacque Digieso for her 30 years of exemplary leadership of The Cottage School. I am excited she will remain with the school as a board member. I look forward to working with Dr. Digieso, as we continue to Honor the Past…Celebrate the Present…Embrace the Future! In Education –

Hello High School Families,

Having just celebrated our 30th

, we were able to reconnect with alumni students and staff who told us over

and over what an amazing difference The Cottage School made in their lives. The administrative team is

already hard at work making sure we are ready to continue to make a positive difference in your lives as we

embark on year 31! Please review this letter and the attachments carefully as this is all information you need

for the summer and for the fall. Please attend to deadlines and submit early so you get a head start on things

that need to be completed before registration and orientation.

Policy Revisions: Again this year, thank you for the time and attention you gave to the parent survey; based

on your feedback we have made adjustments to our policies and procedures. Because students made such

good choices wearing work place appropriate jeans, Spirit Wear Casual Fridays, where appropriately nice

blue jeans can be worn with a TCS spirit shirt were a success and will continue. In addition, BYOD

continues in the High School, and students will be able to maintain possession of cell

phones/laptops/tablets/iPods, etc…for as long as they comply with the appropriate use policy, and we added

some privileges to individual pay levels as well. In our tobacco and no smoking policy for school and school

events, we prohibited electronic cigarettes and vaping, and we are excited to be considering an official

Cougar hooded jacket to be available for students to purchase in the fall. Encourage your teen to earn some

money this summer babysitting, mowing lawns, etc…because they are going to want one!

Staff Additions: We are excited to add to our instructional team this year and want to welcome Michael Ann

Harris from the ASP and CAPStone program to a full time position teaching Math, Lynn Leonard in Social

Science, Amanda Burke in Science and Jason Morrow in Science. They all come to TCS with excellent

experience and references, and we are looking forward to adding their talents to our already fabulous team.

Summer Reading Goal - Two Books/Graphic Novels: Education research stresses that students should be

reading over the summer. Summer reading credit is solely dependent on completed summer reading logs and

reading questions presented to teachers upon student’s return to school. We will accept submissions up to

Monday, August 17th

. We have provided some excellent reading options that are listed on the parent portal

of the TCS website, and as always, we are flexible with independent reading material, and trust that you will

assist your teen in choosing reading material appropriate for their age and reading level.

Manual Review: Review the revised Student Policy and Procedure Manual that is posted on our website:

www.cottageschool.org with your student, prior to signing the on-line form. This needs to be signed prior to

attending orientation.

Enrichment Classes for Rising 9th

Graders: These classes July 27 – July 31 are a great way to prepare

your student for the 2015-2016 year. Please see the flyer for more about this opportunity.

Remind.Com: We will again be using Remind.com for emergency announcements and any school

closings. To sign up for the 2015-16 school year, please take a minute to send a text to’81010’ and put

‘tcspar’ in the message section. We will use Remind.com only for emergencies or to communicate time

essential information.

: In order to ensure your student gets first priority for registration in the classes they

would like and to save time at orientation, please complete forms and submit by July 20th

Registration: Since you will have submitted all of your forms and payments as needed, you will breeze

through registration. You will receive your preliminary schedule, calendar, text books, locker, sign-up for

athletic teams, purchase PE uniform, and reserve a parking space for your driving teen. In addition, parents

will receive information from the Parent Association and Booster Club. Be sure students attend in school

dress code (see Student Policy and Procedure Manual). Those students who are not in dress code will be

asked to go home and change before they can register.

Carpool: For those families interested in carpool opportunities, please note this when you are filling out the

on-line Vital Student Information form. This information will be gathered and available during registration

and orientation.

Medication: Some of our students take medication during the school day. Please read our HS medication

policies in the Policy and Procedure Manual carefully and be prepared to follow the procedures listed. We

request that you deliver a couple of ‘emergency’ doses to Ivan Plastiak so that we have medication here

to administer should your child forget his/her medication. To ensure that all students receive the

prescribed medication and dose, please provide the school with your student’s medication in a prescription

bottle with the medication information and dosage clearly indicated on the bottle.

Lunch: We are working again with Wholesome Tummies. Please see the information on the lunch

program and get signed up! If you prefer to pack a lunch, be sure it is labeled with student name. There are

microwaves and a refrigerator in the RCC for student use.

Snack: We know the benefits of a quick snack mid-morning, so we are maintaining a snack opportunity at

the beginning of fourth period. Students may purchase snacks from the snack cart or bring their own.

Students are encouraged to bring something healthy and easy to eat quickly…fruit, granola, yogurt, energy

bars, water…items that will give their metabolism the boost it needs to sustain attention until lunch.

Materials for School: It is perfectly acceptable for HS students to wait to purchase school supplies until

receiving each teacher’s syllabus. In order to assist with organizational issues, and for those of you who want

to shop early, TCS uses the following COLOR GUIDE for each academic discipline. We ask that you

follow these same color schemes when purchasing your school materials:

English or Language Arts Classes – Red Notebooks

Mathematics – Blue Notebooks

Social Studies – Yellow Notebooks

Science – Green Notebooks

Electives – White/Black & other color Notebooks

In general, HS teachers prefer separate, 1 inch, 3 ring binders for each class, but allow one binder with

divided, color sections if that works best for your student. In addition, a few pens, pencils, loose leaf paper or

tablets and a pack of highlighters are encouraged. A flash drive is a must!

First Day of School Monday, August 10th

: Be sure students have a writing utensil and at least one notebook

to start the year off successfully. Remember, we are a team and we need your support to see that our

students are fully prepared so they get off to a good start.

After School Opportunities and Competitive Sports

Academic Support – The teaching staff is available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. (or in the A.M. by appointment) for additional academic support at no extra cost.

After School Program (ASP) – The Cottage School offers an ASP for students Monday – Friday, 3:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M. From 3:30 P.M. – 4:30 P.M., students participate in a supervised homework and study hour, including use of computer lab for homework.

From 4:30 P.M. – 6:00 P.M., students have the opportunity to engage in activities including: continued homework supervision; indoor board or other educational games; outdoor physical activity (weather permitting); campus speakers/presentations; co-curricular activities; home sports events. ASP fees are prepaid in advance by month and are non-refundable.

Late Pick-Up – If you are unable to pick up your child at ANY scheduled pick-up time (either at the end of the school day by 3:15 P.M., practices, or ASP, etc.) there will be a $1 per minute late fee.

After School for Credit – After School for Credit is also available as an after school option for your child. Please contact the Admissions Office if you have interest in enrolling your child in an After School for Credit course.

Additional Academic & Tutorial Programs – Additional services are available for an hourly fee of $65 per hour, covering such topics as SAT/ACT Prep, Speech/Language services, social skills, etc. Please contact your child’s Principal in regard to additional academic and tutorial programs.

The Atlanta Wholesome Tummies Team is thrilled to be back at The Cottage School this year! Our company was started in an effort to bring REAL food back to students. Our WT Café experience offers only the highest quality food available in schools using only the purest, freshest and most natural ingredients. Our foods are prepared from scratch, cooked in our commercial kitchen using many organic and locally sourced ingredients and delivered directly to your school.

How it works:

If you not already registered, please register on our website by clicking our logo at The Cottage School website. If you are already registered, please update your student’s information. This helps with distribution and getting lunches to the correct place – especially if your student is transferring from Middle to High School. Pre-order one of our vast selections of entrees online at least 36 hours before lunch. Students select their two sides on site at school. Sides include: fresh, in-season fruits, veggies and all-natural and organic snacks. The Cottage School will be active on the Wholesome Tummies website and you can begin ordering online by July 27, 2015. The first lunch will be served on Monday, August 10. Detailed pricing is listed on our website, with prices ranging from $4.50 to $7.00 depending on the size of the meal. We will have detailed instructions available on how to how to order once The Cottage School is live on our website.

Please note that we will deliver sack lunches in place of Pizza on the Fridays that your student has a field trip – these comprise a 6 inch sub, chips, fruit and water.

Summer 2015 Dear Parents, The following pages contain information regarding the physical education and athletic programs for the next school year. The first matter concerns PE uniforms. Of course, our policy as outlined in the Student Handbook requires Cottage School issued uniforms for all physical education and “athletic” elective classes. Please go on-line to place your order as soon as possible to ensure that we have enough inventory for our first day of school. The second form (Pre-participation Physical Examination) contains two sections. You must complete the front of the form yourself, while arranging for a doctor to fill out the other two pages. This form must be returned for students to gain eligibility for all Cottage School athletic teams. The Athletic Department is required by the Georgia Independent School Association and the Atlanta Athletic Conference to retain these forms on file for all students who participate in athletics. The third form is the Parental Consent for Participation in Interscholastic Athletics. This form must be completed by parents or guardians and returned to the school. Only students with signed consent forms will be eligible to participate in Cottage School Athletics. This form needs to be updated each year for returning student athletes. Promote Cougar Pride Support the Athletic Booster Club in 2015-2016

Over 65 percent of our students participate on 18 athletic teams at The Cottage School. Our athletes and coaches need your help as team parent supporters. Our gym creates additional opportunities for Booster Club activity (help with concessions, scoreboard operation, and tournaments to name a few). Please consider an investment in the success of the TCS athletic programs. Your open support of any amount (Checks or online payment to TCS – Booster Club; to the business office) allows the athletic department to cover both unexpected necessities as well as “nice to have” but unbudgeted items, such as coaches polo’s, hall of fame plaques, and archery equipment. The students are vested; please help reinforce the principles being set forth by being involved too. Watching and cheering is great but helping is superb and a necessity!

PAC PICKS Dear TCS Families – Did you know that the Parent Association (PAC) dues are included with your tuition? Many of you may be wondering exactly what PAC is all about and how you can be involved. PAC provides much of the volunteer manpower for programs and initiatives at The Cottage School. PAC volunteers help support TCS through campus beautification, staff appreciation activities, administrative support, hospitality, program enhancements, TCS Founder’s Day celebration, parent social events, the newly formed mentor program, educational opportunities and more! Take a minute to fill out the volunteer form, we will find the right position for YOU! The most important thing is for your student to see you involved in their school. Your involvement shows them just how important their education is to you. There is a volunteer position for everyone; whether you work full-time, part-time, live around the corner from TCS or have a one hour + commute each day. Welcome to our new families! Dear Parents: The Cottage School strives to create and ensure a safe environment where your student can flourish both academically and socially. Part of ensuring your students safety to accomplish these goals is to do our best to make certain The Cottage School is a drug and alcohol free campus. The Cottage School has a history and culture of trusting our students and parents to inform us of any known illegal substances present on campus. We believe this has served us and our community well in the past and will continue to serve us well as we move forward. In addition, we would like to add an active prevention to assist us in our mission to keep our students and campus drug free. In doing so, we are taking a proactive position regarding the presence of prohibited substances on our campus. The Cottage School will renew our contract with Interquest, Canine Detection in order to actively prevent the use or presence of illegal substances on our campus. Interquest uses mild mannered, scent trained dogs, such as Golden and Labrador Retrievers, Springer Spaniels and Weimaraners to detect the presence of prohibited substances. The canines will search the outside area around cars, lockers and bags. If the canine detects drugs or alcohol, the applicable student will be asked to open the designated area for a confidential search of the area. If anything is found that creates a concern for the school, the substance will be turned over to an administrator and the parent will be contacted for a conference. Canine Detection dogs are unable to discriminate between legal and illegal drugs. Students who have over the counter medication in appropriate doses or prescribed medication in the prescription bottle will not be penalized. The Roswell Police Department will be notified when students are in possession of illegal or unidentified substances. The Cottage School is very excited and pleased to continue this additional step in keeping our community and student body drug and alcohol free.
