HAPPENINGS
Name: Patricia Jiron Mitchen Hometown: Baton Rouge, LA Educa on: Vanderbilt University‐ B.S. in Human and Organiza onal Development; New York University‐ M.S. in Human Resource Management and Development What do you do in your department, including job tle and area?
I am the Training and Development Coordinator in Human Resource Management. I coordinate our diverse training programs. I also design courses, facilitate trainings, and provide individual coaching! How long have you been with LSU? 1 year 1 month. What has been your most sa sfying or rewarding experience as an HR professional? My most sa sfying experience is when someone has an “ah‐ha” moment in one of my training classes or coaching sessions. When a par cipant can clearly see how a concept can help them improve their performance, I feel like I made a real difference in their lives. Of course, “a‐ha” moments are simply the beginning of a long journey of making changes and prac cing new behaviors. But, the “light bulb” moment is usually the most exci ng part! What’s the strangest thing you’ve run across in your HR career? In my previous job I worked in a state hospital in NYC renowned for its psychiatric ward. I was working on an employee engagement survey and had to enter the prison in the psychiatric ward to encourage the staff to take the survey. That was pre y scary and strange! What do you like most about working at LSU? I absolutely love working at LSU for the beau ful campus, the collegial atmosphere and the diversity of people. But above all, I love working for an organiza on that understands the value of learning and development. Tell us something interes ng about yourself. My parents were poli cal refugees from Nicaragua and came to Louisiana to start a be er life away from poli cal oppression. They se led in Baton Rouge because many of my family members were a ending Louisiana State University! It was difficult for them to start over and I’m so proud of how far my family has come in such a short period of me. My parents were married on campus not far from Thomas Boyd Hall so I feel like I’ve come full circle!

Best and Worst Vending Machine Picks You’re in a mee ng when your stomach growls. You’d rather not have to go to the vending machine, but you don’t have another op on. Don’t fret! We’ve got a list of some of the best (and worst) op ons for you to choose. Best Picks
Baked! Lays Original – 210 cal., 3g fat, 0g sat fat, 4g fiber;
check out that fiber count!
Sun Chips Original – 140 cal., 6g fat, 1g sat fat, 2 g fiber;
made of whole grains!
Salted Peanuts – less than 200 cal., 3g fiber; good source
of protein and the kind of fat shown to increase ‘good’
cholesterol!
Animal Crackers – low in calories (10 = 112 calories)
Worst Picks
‐Aus n Cheese Crackers w/ cheddar cheese – 210 cal., 10g
fat, 2g sat fat, 4g trans‐fat; too much trans‐fat!
‐Pop‐tarts Frosted Strawberry – 420 cal., 10g fat, 2.5g sat
fat, 40g sugar; share only, almost the calorie equivalent of
a meal and way too much sugar!
‐Cheez‐It Baked Snack Crackers – 160 cal., 8g fat, 2g sat
fat; no fiber, no protein, no good!

Come on Get Happy...with Chocolate! The sugar in the chocolate triggers the “feel‐good hormone” serotonin, while the fat and phenylethylamine it contains leads to an endorphin release. It’s true! Chocolate can really make you feel blissfully happy. As an added health benefit, choose a square of dark chocolate. It can help lower both your blood pressure and your risk of stroke! “How Food Affects Your Mood” ‐Redbookmag.com
