“They all ate and were satisfied.” Matthew 14:13-21
These are the words of the Gospel for this 18th Sunday in ordinary time. This scene from the Sacred Scriptures
clearly foreshadows the Holy Mass. The people were hungry and seemed to need food. The disciples had their
minds stuck in this world and the limitations of earthly food. They doubted that there was a way to provide
enough food for all of them and thus suggested to Jesus that they be sent home. But notice, Jesus did not antic-
ipate the need of the people by forcing Himself on them, rather waited for them to ask Him to feed them. As I
have spoken of the past few weeks, He awaits us as well. He will not force Himself into our lives but humbly
waits for us to invite Him in. In the Gospel Jesus says, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some
food yourselves.” He calls out His own apostles (Priests) and they respond that they don’t have enough. How
often can we relate to this in our own lives? I know as a priest I fall into this lie often. Our Lord asks something
of me, but I doubt His power to provide through my weakness. Jesus asks the apostles to bring the five loaves
and two fish to him and ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Literally He told them to lie down as this
was the custom of the Jews at this time. Then, He looked up to heaven, said the blessing, broke the bread and
gave it to the disciples to give out to the crowds. Doesn’t this sound familiar? The Holy Mass! In fact, if you
watch during the opening words of the consecration of the host at the Holy Mass, the priest will look up when
he says the introduction to this most solemn moment. If you looked in the Roman Missal (the prayer book the
priest uses on the altar) you would see the following text. The red words are the rubrics which tell the priest
what to do. The black words are what he is to say:
On the day before he was to suffer, He takes the bread and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues: he took bread in his holy and venerable hands, He raises his eyes.
and with eyes raised to heaven to you, O God, his almighty Father, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying:
The words and actions of the priest at the Holy Mass are exactly like Christ’s in the Gospel of Matthew. The
Mass is full of examples just like this. In fact, when we jokingly say that Catholics do not know Scripture we are
actually wrong because the entire Mass is saturated with it. This is why it is important to enter into these mo-
ments and to teach our children to learn and memorize the Mass. Just another reason to memorize things like
the list of saints in the Eucharistic prayer.
If we enter into the Holy Mass in this way, with the richness of the meaning and weight which comes along with
the actions of Christ Himself in scenes like in today’s Gospel, we will be fed beyond all telling. “They all ate and
were satisfied.” Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could say this about our Parish? Let us prepare well for the recep-
tion of Holy Communion with a good confession, and then receive our Lord’s Body and Blood to be satisfied. He
awaits us, He will not force Himself into our hearts.
May the Eucharistic Heart of our Lord bring satisfaction to each of your hearts,

brated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucha-

We offer an opportunity to come together in a small
group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on
the teachings and experience Catholic faith and prepare
individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Con-
firmation and Eucharist.
We invite anyone who is interested to call Fr. Jarvis or
Susan Noble @ 231-938-9214, or on August 15th and
16th we will have a table with information in the gather-
ing space and do a presentation after each Mass.
Parking Lot project
to start in August!
Thanks to the generosity of many parishioners who took Fr.
Ray’s challenge to give a little more or to pay ahead on their
pledges, we collected enough to be able to complete the Park-
ing Lot project this year, before it deteriorates more and prices
go up further!
Still working on scheduling, but anticipate 1 weekend when we
will have to park in designated areas and on gravel. Stay tuned
for more info. Signs directing parking will be posted.
Please keep your pledges coming as we still have more projects
to complete!

Preschool Teacher Immaculate Conception Preschool is seeking candidates for a lead teacher position for their 3 year old pro-gram. Position is five full days. Can-didates need to be familiar with State of Michigan licensing requirements and have the necessary certification for preschool programs. As you might suspect, without our Sunday Masses, March—May, and low attendance now, we are
seeing a decline in our collection. While some of our expenses are decreased during this time, many
are fixed. Our budget is tight during good times, so this has been challenging.
A Heartfelt THANK YOU to all of our Parishioners who continue to support their Parish through online giving and send-
ing in envelopes through the mail or dropping them by the office.
Stewardship By the Book In today's Gospel, Jesus feeds the five thousand with five loaves and two fish. The message of stewardship is that God's gifts, shared, will always be more than enough.
Vocation View If some people did not hoard the riches of this world, all people would have enough to eat and drink. Too many people starve to death every day. Who will speak loudly of justice today?
Stewardship Reflections “Jesus said to them, ‘There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves’.” - MATTHEW 14:16 This is what Jesus said right before he fed the five thousand men. How often do we really place our trust in Jesus when the situation looks grim? With Jesus, no gift is too small or insignificant when offered with love. But, we have to do our part. We should trust that Jesus will provide all that we need. We need to believe that Jesus has a better plan in store for us.
