2018 Vacancy – Promotional booklet To apply, visit upsu.com/jobs

Doing professional, differently

Hello!

Thank you for your interest in this challenging and

high-profile role, running the HR function in this

diverse and exciting Investors in People Gold

standard charity.

We are very proud of what we do at UPSU, and we

are looking for an HR Manager who will help us to

grow, supporting managers to develop our staff.

UPSU is here to transform the lives of students

through experience. As our HR Manager, you will

run the HR function, including recruitment, training,

HR information, disciplinary processes, contracts, HR

policies, and all other aspects of HR.

We are looking for an HR professional, with

experience and competence in a generalist HR role.

There is scope for development in this role within

Central Services, depending on the post-holder’s

skills.

You will be joining us as we embrace our next stage

of growth; we are developing our new three-year

Strategic Plan.

If you feel excited by this opportunity, we look

forward to hearing from you.

About the University of Plymouth Students’

Union

UPSU is a student-led organisation. We have a governing document, which sets

out the rules and processes behind everything that we do.

Although we’re part funded by the University of Plymouth, and are located on

the campus, we’re a completely autonomous organisation. This ensures that we

remain entirely focused on our members with one purpose in mind: to make

student life better.

Like all Students’ Unions in the UK, we’re a registered charity (1172830). This

means that we’re not-for-profit: any income we gain from our commercial

services goes straight back into providing services for students. We’re governed

by charity law, which has some implications on how we can spend our money –

making sure it’s spent on students, for example.

UPSU is its own legal entity, which means that the assets of the charity are held

directly by the company (10676070) registered in England and Wales. UPSU’s

governing document is the Memorandum and Articles of Association (M&As),

which became effective on 1st August 2017. The M&As have been modelled

very closely on the NUS model and approved by the Charity Commission,

Companies House, the University of Plymouth’s Governors, the University of

Plymouth’s students (by referendum on 3rd March 2017) and UPSU’s Trustees.

We also have a Trading Subsidiary (09689028) registered in England and Wales

for our non-primary purpose trading – which is also reinvested in student

services.

Students are at the heart of everything that we do. They sit out on our Student

Forums and Union Council, which determine our campaigning and political

priorities. They make up the majority of our Trustee Board, which is legally

responsible for our staff, finances, risk management and reputation. Students

also have the power to shape what the Union does through our Annual Student

Members’ Meetings and referenda.

Our Vision, Mission and Values

Our Mission

To make a positive impact on the lives of all our members, through

understanding, empowering and delivering on their needs.

Our Vision

To transform lives through experience.

Our Values

Our values define how we go about our work and activities.

Student Led: We place students at the heart of everything we do, so all of our

decisions are made for the benefit of our students and the organisation.

Progressive: We look to the future, seeking new opportunities and

partnerships. We are innovative, inclusive, creative and happy to work in

collaboration with others.

Fun: We want to ensure that your time with us is as enjoyable as possible.

Empowering: We provide opportunities for our staff and students to develop

their life skills, to use their initiative and make a positive difference to their

lives and communities.

Democratic: We are student led through strong democratic structures. We

believe in the principle and power of democracy.

Sustainable: We make sure we have, and will continue to have, resources to

protect our ability to meet our members’ needs now and in the future.

Doing professional, differently

Students’ unions are amazing organisations – part business, part charity – and

all seriously fun places to work.

Professionally run, but different.

The exact opposite of corporate, we’re progressive, creative people making a

difference in unconventional workplaces.

Could you help people make change for themselves? Make the most of their

student experience? Make the change they want in the world?

We’re looking for talented professionals who are looking for something

different to support our student leaders. In our workplaces, we know that

different is good: the more diversity, the better the ideas, the greater the

impact.

Students’ unions come in all shapes and sizes, with job roles at all levels, and

with more than 550 unions across the country, you can build a career doing

what you love, in a huge range of highly flexible and supportive environments.

If you thrive on diversity, variety, challenge, and creativity is your thing, work

somewhere professional, but different. Build a career in Students’ Unions.

Investors in People

continuing this.
