About Sector Councils

•  The HR Council is one of 35 sector councils funded by the Government of Canada’s Sector Council Program at HRSDC.

•  Most national sector councils are in ‘industry’ sectors. All focus on labour market issues.

•  Examples of activities that sector councils undertake: collection and sharing of labour market information; targeted recruitment and skills development initiatives; skills development tools, etc.

About the HR Council

•  A national body that addresses issues of paid employment in the voluntary and non-profit sector

•  Works collaboratively with organizations, educators, labour and governments

•  Incorporated in 2005 •  A bilingual organization with a board of directors of 18 and a

staff of eight based in Ottawa, Ontario

The Sector at a Glance

Paid employment in the sector: –  1.2 million employees across Canada, representing

7.2% of the national paid work force – More than 69,000 employers –  $22 B annual payroll

Employers: –  In large, small, urban and rural & remote communities – Majority are small organizations

• 75% have fewer than 10 employees – Larger organizations employ half of total labour force

–  76% are women (47.4%) – Approximately 20.9 % are union members (32%) –  48.4% are over the age of 45 (40.1%) –  14% are immigrants –  33% are in professional occupations – More than 70% have post-secondary education –  71% hold full-time permanent jobs – About 12.7% or 1 in 8 sector employees has a health

problem or disability that affects their work

Labour Force Study – Report #2 - 2008

HR Management Standards Developed to inspire, educate and support board members, managers and employees with regards to the fundamental role HR management policies and practices have in creating effective organizations.

Designed to assist non-profit organizations in developing effective HR management policies and practices.

excellence in governance and accountability •  Act as a foundation for individual learning and
