The month of December saw the successful transfer and completion of the HR files at the FB Areabranch. The brightly lit rooms with clean floors and newly set up rooms were a sharp contrast to thedusty storage rooms previously stacking all the files and folders. The HR team set to work adorningthe immaculate shelves with files, and important branding materials. Everyone came clad in casualsready to get down and busy! Preparations were at their max with stationery, labels, cartons all sentover a day in advance. Kudos to the Purchase Department for readying the neat filing roomsseparate rooms for each function. And last but not least three cheers for Hasnan Ali (AdminExecutive at FB Area) for providing the much needed surgical masks to make the job much moredust-free and breathable!

Shazia Parveen

It is believed that women only start fires. I havedisproved this old adage and now I extinguish fires.“

Pakistan’s first female Fire Fighter

Source: http://groopic.com/

Jumping off a red truck and darting into a blazing building while wielding only a water hose andsome fire-retardant clothing as cover, is an image that is traditionally associated with men in theSubcontinent. But Shazia Parveen has changed that by becoming not only Pakistan’s, but Asia’s firstfemale firefighter.

Twenty-five year old Shazia, hails from the Vehari District in Punjab and joined the Rescue 1122emergency services as a firefighter in 2010. For Shazia, the job had always been a dream despite itsinherent dangers. So when the Rescue 1122 Women’s Department opened up, she jumped at thechance. The prospect of working along with men did not phase her enthusiasm.

Nonetheless, it has not been an easy journey. After recruitment, she had to undergo extensivetraining at the Punjab Emergency Service in Lahore. Amongst the 600 people there, she was the onlywoman who completed the training which included excessive exercising, swimming and fighting fire. She faced adversity from fellow friends and neighbours for whom this was an unlikely profession totake up, that too in a predominantly patriarchal society where women’s roles are cut out for themby elders.

“At the outset, people laughed at me when they saw me working with male co-workers but when Isaved precious properties during fires, they started admiring me”. I was once told that if I completedthe training I could become Asia’s first female firefighter. That fuelled my passion to persevere and Ididn’t stop until I accomplished my dream”. Shazia encourages women to not be deterred by theidea of a man’s world and stresses that determination to succeed will always achieve results.

Shazia has received positive feed back from her Supervisors at Rescue 1122 and is a driving force inthe Unit. “Through her determination, she motivates the men to perform better as it becomes afriendly battle of egos” says her instructor. Pakistan needs more women like Shazia who are a sourceof positivity and pride.
