WhenHPsaysthattheEliteBook2540pwasdesignedtomeetthemilitarystandards(MILSTD810F)forhigh/lowtemperaturesanddust,theymeanthenotebookisbuilttowithstandyearsofuseandabuse.
Withallthisruggeddurabilitybuiltintothedesign,youhavetoexpectatradeoff,whichinthiscaseisweight.Some12inchbusinessclassnotebookstipthescaleat3poundsorless.TheEliteBook2540phasastartingweightof3.38poundswitha6cellbattery,buttheaddeddurabilitymorethanmakesupforaminorweightincrease.

Whenviewingthescreenfromstraightahead,colorsarerichandcontrastisexcellent.Fullscreenmovieslookquitegood,withdeepblacksandgoodviewingangles.Horizontalviewinganglesareparticularlyimpressivesoyoushouldnthavetroubleshowingapresentationtomultiplepeoplesittingatadesk.Theverticalviewinganglefromabovestartstowashoutatextremeanglesandcolorsbegintoinvertfrombelow,butmostuserswontviewthescreenfromhighaboveorfarbelow.

Thebuiltinspeakerisaboveaveragewithagoodrangeofhighs,middlesandacceptablelowsthatdontsoundtinnylikemostmonospeakers.Highvolumesettingsaremorethanloudenoughtofillasmallofficewithsoundforapresentation,butarestillclearandnothorriblydistorted.Theonlynegativeaboutthespeakerisitslocation.
Thespeakerislocatedonthebottomfrontedgeofthenotebook,sothesoundisntprojectedupwardattheuserwhentheEliteBookisusedasalaptop.Infact,ourstaffusuallyreferstolaptopspeakerswiththistypeofplacementascrotchspeakersbecausethespeakersaredirectingsoundtoyourlapandwaistratherthanyourears.Ifyoureusingthe2540ponyourdesk,thisisntmuchofaproblem,butifyourearoadwarriorconstantlyworkingfromyourlapthenyoumightbeannoyedbythespeakerplacement.
Theheadphonejackonthe2540pworkswellwithtwodifferentbrandsofearphonesIusedduringthetest.Nostaticorothernoisewasnoticedthroughthejackbesidesimperfectionsintheaudiosourceitself.
KeyboardandTouchpadThekeyboardslayoutisslightlydifferentthanwhatyoumightfindonotherHPconsumernotebooks.Theindividualkeypressesarequietwithoutloudclickingsoundsasyoutype.Keysareflatterandhavealittlelessspaceinbetweenthem.Thekeyspacinghadtomakeroomfortheadditionofthepointstick.
TheEliteBook2540palsoincludesthesamekeyboardlightasthelargerEliteBooknotebooks.PressthetinylightbulbbuttonabovethescreenandasmallLEDpopsoutandshinesdownonthekeyboard.Thelightisntvery
bright,butitsbrightenoughsothatifyoureonanairplaneforexample,youcanstillseethekeyboardinthedarkwithoutannoyingthepersonnexttoyou.
AbovethekeyboardrestsaseriesoftouchsensitivemediabuttonssimilartootherHPconsumernotebooks.ThereisanInfo,WiFiToggle,PresentationModeandMutetouchbuttonsontheglossystrip.Additionally,nexttotheMutebuttonisavolumecontrolsliderthatcanbeusedbyslidingyourfingeracrossthatarea.Oneniceadditiononthe2540pisatouchpaddisablebuttonthatallowsyoutoturnitoffandjustusethepointstickformovingthemousecursor.
ThetouchpadalsofeaturesDuraFinishsothatoilsfromyourfingertipdontbuilduponthesurfaceandmakethetouchpadlookweatheredafterjustafewmonths.TheSynapticstouchpadwasveryresponsivetomytouch,andthetworubbermousebuttonsarequietandabouttherightsize.Thereisalso
