    HOYO

FBI agents follow a potential Jihadist recruiterto Minneapolis Somali community, sparking

the chain of events that tears the Hassanfamily apart.

    Plo

tHoyo is a single mother of three.Sahra is her imaginative daughter who is to start kindergarten ina week.

Sebu is her withdrawn son who managed to get suspended

from the first week of seventh grade by fighting the school bully.

Ali is her charismatic, too-smart-for-his-own-good oldest child,

who has a tendency to skip school to visit art museums and read

    books in coffee shops.

On one of his attempts to escape school, Ali is caught by

neighborhood patrol officer Maas and delivered to the kind-but-strict

Imam at the local mosque, where he is sentenced to regular

attendance at Asr prayer. Meanwhile, Hoyo struggles to go about her

businessselling garments to storeowners at the Somali mallwhile

having to look after both Sebu and Sahra. Sahra wanders off andHoyo finds her eating sambusas with their elderly, energetic neighbor

Oday who offers to take care ofSahra until school starts. Oday and

Sahra two build an unlikely friendship as the story progresses. (Oday

even takes Sahra to see his long-estranged son, Abdi) At the

mosque, Ali makes friends his own age, all of whom are all

enthralled by the young, mysterious and charming Razakar,

    supposedly a religious lecturer.

One day, after Asr prayer, Alis is abruptly detained by two

FBI Agents and questioned about Razakar. Ali insists he noticed

nothing unusual but the Agents insist on him returning every day

after prayer to report on Razakars activities. Sebu grows distantfrom Hoyo and is suspended again on the very day he is allowed to

go back to school. Hoyo is powerless as her attempts at discipline fail

again and again. Ali is interrogated more and more and as the days

pass his agitation against the Agents grows. Razakar, meanwhile,

    becomes acquainted with Ali.

One of Alis friends from the mosque, Barak, mysteriously

disappears. At first, Ali cant get any information from Baraks

secretive family, the evasive Agents, or Officer Maas. Threatening

to end his cooperation, Ali draws out the truth from the Agents: that

Barak has left the country. The Agents in turn harshly interrogate

Ali about Razakar; Ali says he knows nothing. But when the Agents

accuse Ali of intending to leave the country himself, Ali becomes

furious and leaves. The Agents plan a raid on Alis house, certain that

there is evidence ofRazakars recruitment method in a book given to

Ali. Maas discovers the Agents plan and insists on supervising the

raid so that no one is hurt. The Agents reluctantly agree and the raid

    is set for that night.

Oday brings Sahra back to Hoyo at the end of their

adventurous day. The raid team suddenly charges in and Sebu is

accidentally shot dead by Maas. He then takes his own life on the

spot. Ali stands at the doorway, holding the gallon of milk he had gone

out to buy. It is the night of Obamas victory in the 2008 election andhis speech plays in the background as immeasurable rage and sadness

    fills Alis heart.

The family grieves over Sebus death; Hoyo is devastated. At

the mosque, Ali finds comfort in Razakars kind words, who then

hands him a book; this time with an envelope protruding from it.

Hoyo finds a letter on Alis bed and rushes out to the road,

madly screaming for a taxi. At the airport, Ali stares at the flight

board, his body trembling in fear. Before he can decide, Hoyo runs in

and tackles him. They sit together on the floor as Ali cries, I dont

want to go, Hoyo. I dont want to go. Watching from the other end

of the terminal is Razakar, who leaves without a word. An airport

guard asks Hoyo and Ali to move along, and they leave.

    Cast

Roughly 80% of the roles are for East African actors and

actresses. Roughly half of the roles are for ages 5-25. Casting will

focus on the Twin Cities area for logistical simplicity. Columbus, Ohio is

a potential area for auditions, but will not be considered in this plan.

Given these parameters and the absence of a substantial East African

acting community in Minnesota, auditions will have to be

numerous and accessible. The attached calendar displays the

current plan: twenty-one auditions at a static location in Minneapolis,

near bus lines, mostly held on weekends. The use of new actors and

actresses will also serve as an advantage in the festival circuit, where

    new talent is usually appreciated.

    Crew

Audio recording will be left to a professional. All other crewpositions will be filled with interns. I have used this model before and

it works surprisingly well. Audio is simply too central to the film to

teach in a short period of time. Video, however, requires

coordination more than experience. As the director, it would fall on me

to have a clear vision of the shot I want and then instruct an intern-

based crew on its proper execution. To establish a system of quick

communication with the crew, this plan dedicates a total of 13 days

towards crew training in particular. This training and the total

experience will result in the creation of a crew that can be employed

in future projects, thus providing a solid base for any later idea in the

    East African community.

onThe story will be shown in a simplistic manner (cinematographyakin to Farhadis

2011 film, A Separation), allowing for the power of the story to

mature on its own accord. Camera movements will be employed in

scenes with a clear build-up. The five-year-old Sahra Hassan has a

tendency to veer off into fantasy, often times daydreaming entire

Bollywood dance numbersthese will be shown with vivacity and

vibrant colors and a pace that is dissonant with the rest of the film. It

is absolutely crucial that actors be able to convey their emotions

realistically, as the entire production, though injected with fantasy

    and intense

    drama, aims to berealistic.

    Setting

The film is set in an unnamed Minneapolis neighborhood with a

majority Somali population. Several shots take place in a Somali

mall, others in Somali restaurants. The neighborhood mosque has

mostly Somali attendees. The shots that take place in schools,

however, will maintain the diversity of most Minneapolis public

schools and will not be specifically situated in the neighborhood.

Shots taken outside will most likely take place in one of the further

suburbs (Maple Lake, MNa 45-minute drive from Minneapolisis very

film friendly) due to the need for a police vehicle. It is possible that

the city of Minneapolis will prove to be accommodating to our needs,

in which case exterior shooting will take place

    here.

    Langua

geThe script is mostly in English with a substantial minority of thedialogue in Somali. The translations necessary will either be

delegated to the specific actor (so that the actors own way of

speaking can meld with their characters way) or the script will be

translated by a professional translator and then tempered by actors to

    take a more realistic form.

    Why Hoyo Must BeMade

For the great majority of people, terrorism is an abstract battle

between good and evil. This film will dedicate itself to the reality.

What happened in Minneapolis during those months when young

American men went off to fight for a cause that their fellow

  • 7/29/2019 Hoyo Proposal Mar 24

    12/40

countrymen, immigrant and native-born alike, deemed reprehensible

is something entirely peculiar and disturbing. But it taught us that

terrorism is a human affair. The young men who left werent natural

criminals and many of them were excellent students and verifiably

    good Americans.

    So why did they leave?

Was it a genuine disgust with Americas foreign policies? Was it

a symptom of that distinct alienation that seems to separate

Americas Muslims from the rest? Was it trouble at home, or the

conquering mentality common in young men? Maybe it was some

    great loss in

the family. Or was it, perhaps, some strange mixture of those andother inexpressible

    6

  • 7/29/2019 Hoyo Proposal Mar 24

    13/40

nuances that motivated these young men to enlist in Al-Shabaab?

These are questions that, for the sake of American society, must

be asked and unless something profound and importantlike a

well-crafted filmencapsulates the events in Minneapolis during

those dark months, the memory will be lost and little will have been

learned from it all. Anyone aware of these circumstances and their

implications will agree with the statement, Hoyo must be made.

In terms of screenwriting, Hoyo is a first-class story. The

characters are profoundly interesting and developed thoroughly. The

plot is plausible yet unpredictable. The climax arrives appropriately

yet surprisingly. Though the story-at-large is a drama, the dialogue

conveys incredible wit and humor, even in the most trying of

situations. This isnt a sad story, all things consideredin the end, it

reminds the viewer of the better part of human nature and the power

of family and community. Pacing is done wonderfully well, the drama

budding with time to an unnerving crescendo. The writing leads the

viewer to follow the stories of the main characters intimately and feel

their losses, fears, and joys as if they were our own. Even thecharacters one would like to despise are portrayed in their inherent

humanity (the true climax of the story isnt the shooting of Hoyos

middle son, but the ensuing action taken by the shooter).

Hoyo not only should be made, but it can be made realistically.

The budget is economical [see Production Budget] since it relies on a

few unconventional methods of film production [see notes on casting

and crew formation, notes on location securing, etc.]. The resources

that are necessary, both personnel and equipment, are entirely

accessible and can be found in the Twin Cities. And, above all, the

available financial indicators all point to a large return on the

production budget [see Distribution/Revenue], thus making Hoyo not

only socially and artistically merited, butfinancially viable as well.

    PRODUCTION

    Budget

The production budget for this film falls in the range of

$70,000-110,000.This discrepancy is due to the variable

levels of formality in the specific arrangements. If(a) most shooting locations are provided by

    small-businesses, (b) catering is provided by a

company with reasonable rates, (c) insurance

is taken from an inexpensive provider,

    (d) sets are designed only to the point artistically necessary,

    (e) actors are compensated below professional/Screen

Actors Guild levels, (f) crew is hired on an internship

    basis

    (g) costumes are budgeted only to point of artistic necessity

then the $70,000 mark is realistic. In all likelihood, some of the more

informal elements wont suffice and more will need to be spent for the

particular resource. It is most likely that the ultimate cost of

production will be in the area of $90,000, but the number $100,000

    will

be used when referring to the funding needed. The chart belowgoes into further detail.

To understand why, we must familiarize ourselves with the 2005film "Paradise Now directed by Hany Abu-Assad, a Dutch-Palestinian

filmmaker, about two Palestinian childhood friends who have been

recruited for suicide attacks in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

It focuses on their last days together.

    The Paradise NowModel

Paradise Now opened in the United States on a late-Octoberweekend in 2005 that was notoriously slow for box offices nationwide.

Yet, the film managed to generate $48'023 from four theaters,

averaging $12,005 per theater. This was a decent opening, but by no

    means a blockbuster.

Week 1 ended with a box office gross of$71,499 generated

by the 4 theaters. Week 2 expanded the release to a total of

23 theaters and made another $146,117. Week 3 saw 45

theaters screening Paradise Now and brought in another

    $191,390

There was nothing extraordinary about the run so far but, in three

weeks, Paradise Now had earned a total of $409,006.

Week 4 8 saw Paradise Now consistently screened at 55

theaters and earn another$525,265, bringing the total up to $934,271 at the end of eight

weeks. The holiday season arrived and theaters began to drop the

film for more family-friendly material, leaving it with a box office total

of$1.05 million after ten weeks in American theaters.

In January the film received an Oscar nomination for Best

Foreign Language Film, and that extended the films run in the US for

    another ten weeks, generating another

$410000, leaving Paradise Now with a final US box office total

of $1.46 million after twenty weeks.

Familiar with Paradise Now, let us look at itsrelation to Hoyo.

    Hoyo: Similarities to

  • 7/29/2019 Hoyo Proposal Mar 24

    20/40

    Paradise Now

    1) Plot

Both stories focus on terrorist recruitment and its effecton interpersonal relations.

    2) Narrative Style

    10

  • 7/29/2019 Hoyo Proposal Mar 24

    21/40

Hoyo, like Paradise Now, takes a human approach to the

subject of terrorism, rather than a clear-cut good-vs.-evil

    perspective.

    3) Language

Both works are bilingualHoyo using Somali and English

and Paradise Now using Arabic and English.

    4) Release Date

Like Paradise Now, Hoyo is scheduled to be released in

October, when mainstream studios scale back distribution of

new releases in anticipation of the holiday season.

    5) Size of Limited Release

Hoyo will contract 64 theaters from the US, UK and Canada

a number very close to the 55 that Paradise Now

screened at between Week 4 and 8.

    6) Length of Run

Hoyos main run will take place over a four-week period,

with a limited release taking place in the few weeks

preceding, almost identical to Paradise Nows distribution.

    7) Minimum Audience based on cultureDue to the language and subject matter, Arab-Americans

were a target audience for Paradise Now as Somalis in the

US, UK and Canada are a target audience of Hoyo. Having a

target audience based on culture assures exhibitors of a

    minimum audience size.

    8) Mainstream counterpart

The Spielberg blockbuster Munich came out during

December of 2005 and sparked public interest in the

Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Paradise Now, being an

independent film with an artistically-minded take on the

subject, became a part of that discussion, and saw its box

office gross increase as a result. In late- October of this year,

on the same weekend on which Hoyo is to be released,

Captain Phillips starring Tom Hanks will open in theaters

    worldwide. The story

  • 7/29/2019 Hoyo Proposal Mar 24

    22/40

is about the 2009 hijacking of an American cargo ship by

Somali pirates. Again, the publics interest in this subject will

rise dramatically and Hoyo will be there as an independent,

artistically-minded take on the subject, and see its production

    costs return manifold.

    11

    23/40

    Hoyo: Advantages overParadise Now

    1) Untouched topic

Though the subject of terrorist recruitment has been

addressed by films such as Paradise Now, Hoyo deals with a

particular eventthe 2008 Al-Shabaab recruitments of

Somali-American youththat no dramatic film has focused on

to date. Additionally, the event is of supreme interest, as the

phenomenon of Americans willingly enlisting in military forces

that are doctrinally anti-American hasnt occurred since the

return of Japanese- and German-Americans to their countries

of origin to fight against Allied forces in World War II.

    2) Setting

Paradise Now takes place in Israel and Palestine and

tells the stories of Palestinians and Israelis. Hoyo is

much closer to home, being about first- generation

    American immigrants.

    3) LanguageParadise Now is primarily in Arabic, with occasional dialogue

in English. Hoyo is mostly in English with a large minority of

    the dialogue in Somali.

    4) Release Dates Proximity to Eid Al-Adha

Specifically referring to the minimum audience, Paradise

Now was released nearly two months before 2005s Eid Al-

Adha, the most-important Muslim holiday on which gift-

giving and movie attendance among Muslims is

significantly high. Arab-American Muslims could have been

drawn in larger numbers to Paradise Now if the films

release date fell around the time of Eid

Al-Adha. Hoyos release date is set exactly three-days before

2013s Eid Al-Adha, thus making full use of the increased

    Somali Muslim film attendance during

    those days,

  • 7/29/2019 Hoyo Proposal Mar 24

    24/40

    5) Urban Concentration of Minimum Audience

Somali-Americans and Somalis in Canada and the UK live in

much higher densities and more accessible urban centers

    than Arab-Americans. See Note on

    Minimum Audience.

    12

  • 7/29/2019 Hoyo Proposal Mar 24

    25/40

    6) Fantastical Bollywood Dance

A key unique selling point (USP) for Hoyo, which has no

counterpart in Paradise Now, is the fantastical Bollywood

dances that occur thrice in the film (as part of little Sahras

attempts to psychologically deny incidents of physical

    violence).

This particular element will serve as a defining element of the

film and the word- of-mouth that plays an indispensable part

    in a films success.

    7) Budget

This is the most important difference: Despite making almost

$1.5 million in the US, Paradise Now didnt earn back its

production costs of $2 million. It was only after an

international release, with strong performances in France,

Germany, and the UK, that the final gross of $4.5 million was

achieved. Even then, with the average studio taking in 55% of

a movies total box office gross, it is imaginable that Paradise

Now was a close call financially, and that financiers didnt see

a significant return on their investments.Hoyos budget is $100000. This disparity in budget size isdue to

    (1) the international nature of Paradise Nows

production vs. Hoyos setting in one city,

    (2) the drastic amount of physical risks involved in

Paradise Nows productionthere were severe security

concerns, including an actual kidnapping of a crew

member by militants, and another instance when lethal

Israeli gunfire was directed towards the crew,

    (3) the different types of sets needed: Hoyo is intimateand domestic,

requiring mostly indoor sets. Paradise Now is about a public

act of terrorism and the conflicts leading up to it and

consequentially required greater funding to secure public

    spaces for filming.

  • 7/29/2019 Hoyo Proposal Mar 24

    26/40

    Hoyo and the Paradise NowModel

Special attention must be paid to the Difference #7, because therein

lies that applicability of the Paradise Now model to the projections for

Hoyo. It is evident that Hoyo

can be made for a twentieth of the cost of Paradise Now and still offerthe same market.

    13

  • 7/29/2019 Hoyo Proposal Mar 24

    27/40

Hypothetically, let us say we contract those very same 55

theaters that screened Paradise Now in its fifth through eighth weeks

and offer a four-week run for Hoyo and they accept. Even if

attendance fell to a dismal half of what Paradise Now had,

Hoyo would make a 25% return on the cost of production. This is

only possible because the production cost of Hoyo is low.

Now let us say that Hoyo doesnt receive Oscar recognition andmaintains a ten-

week run similar to that of Paradise Now with similar attendance.

Hoyo would make ten times its production cost and pay manifold

    returns to the investor.

If Hoyo can match Paradise Nows performance, then thereturn on the cost

of production will be fifteen-fold from the American marketalonei.e. $1.4 million.

    An International

ReleaseThe Paradise Now model has been utilized in describing the

American market. It is evident that just the United States will suffice to

return a sizeable margin to an investment in

    Hoyo.

Recall that Paradise Now had a larger cumulative box office

gross from the non-U.S. market$2 million against the $1.5 million

earned in America. This only hints at the tremendous possibilitiesattached to global distribution. The UK and Canada are readily

identifiable as targets for an international release and continental

Europe demonstrated its interest in movies of this particular subgenre

    via Paradise Now.

Though there is a great opportunity for revenue in aninternational release, this

prospectus chose to stay in the domestic market, where the data is

more readily available and verifiable. I hope it has been shown that

  • 7/29/2019 Hoyo Proposal Mar 24

    28/40

even the domestic market by itself will suffice for

Hoyo to, as initially claimed, yield the production budget many timesover.

    14

    Note on MinimumAudience

The Somali Diaspora in the US, Canada and the UK will

provide a minimum audience, giving theaters an additional

    incentive to screen Hoyo.

Top 11 Somali Populations in the US, Canada and theUK (2011 est.)

    Toronto 1850Leicester 1500Sheffield 1000Cardiff 1000Manchester 6000Ottawa 5000Liverpool 4000

If we were to rely solely on a Somali audience:

Averaging $5 in revenue for every audience member (which is possible

if exhibitors share in box office receipts is limited to 38%, anagreeable portion), breakeven requires attendance of only 20% of

target audience in top three urban centers. Revenue, after sharing with

theater, would be $107,250, a few thousand above the $100000

    budget estimate.

If expanding to all of top 11 urban centers, breakeven requires 11%attendance.

    SUMMARY
