slide 2: look for an e-mailed invitation to an Office Live Workspace review group

Watch your e-mail for a message from me (from my Hotmail address) with a Subject: line that starts with something like “I have shared ‘CPN 100-301 Third Multi-Draft Essay Review Group X’ with you” and with a message body that looks like what’s on the following slide:

In that e-mail, click on the link that begins with “View “CPN . . . . ” You will then be taken a page where you’ll have to fill out a form like the following:

When you’re through filling out the form, click on the Finish button. You’ll then be taken to your group’s Office Live Workspace and you will be automatically logged into it. However, if you’re using the Internet Explorer Web browser, you will get the following pop-up over the Workspace window (unless you’ve already disabled these pop-ups; see slide 5):

slide 6: how to get around the Information Bar pop-up

At this point, you can just click on the Close button, or if you want not to be bothered by these again (as you’ll see, you’ll get a few here throughout this process) you can also tick the box next to the label “Don’t show this message again” first before hitting Close. Then this Information Bar pop-up will disappear, and you will see the full window of your group’s Office Live Workspace which will look something like what’s pictured on the next slide:

slide 8: what do to with the first Information Bar

CPN 100/101: Writing Studies I/II on Computer

Note the Information Bar running along the top of the window:

Right-click on this Information Bar, and you will see the following pop-up menu:

Click on the Run ActiveX Control option, and then the Security Warning pop-up pictured on the next slide will appear:

slide 9: the owssupp.dll Security Warning

CPN 100/101: Writing Studies I/II on Computer

Click on the Run button. Now, next you will get a repetition of the steps illustrated in slides 7-9 here, these times for the two controls “owsclt.dll” and also, surprisingly, “owssupp.dll” again. But follow the directions for these as given in these slides, and eventually you’ll be back at your Office Live Workspace without any Information Bars along the top:

slide 11: you probably should uncheck “Send me activity e-mails”

CPN 100/101: Writing Studies I/II on Computer

At this point you might also want to uncheck the box labeled “Send me activity e-mails” at the bottom of the pane on the right side of your Office Live Workspace:

This is checked by default and it may give you a convenient way to know when somebody in your group either uploads a file or makes a comment on your or somebody else’s essay, but unless you want a ton of e-mails in your inbox notifying you every time anybody does anything in your Workspace, I would recommend unchecking this now.

slide 12: uploading your first draft to your group’s Workspace

CPN 100/101: Writing Studies I/II on Computer

When you’re ready to upload your first draft of your essay to your review group’s Office Live Workspace, if you’re not already logged into it go to workspace.office.live.com. Depending on your computer’s setup, you may be logged into your group’s Workspace automatically, or you may be stopped at the generic Office Live Workspace portal:

If you get the previous screen, just click on the Go to your Microsoft Office

Live link, or if the green button in the upper right says “Sign In,” just click on that and then on the page you get supply your Windows Live ID (i.e., the e-mail address that you supplied when you first registered with Office Live Workspace as depicted in slide 4) and your Password. Then once you’re signed in, you may need to click on the link for your review group in the navigation bar on the left under “Shared With Me” (see slide 10 above) When the screen for your review group appears in the main window, look for the Add Documents button:

If you’re working on a Mac with Safari, actually when you click on the Add Documents button as described in slide 13 you will get two more menu choices, and the only one you need to select is the choice Single Document. After you click on that item, you will get a standard Mac OS X file structure window:

If necessary, click through the window until you locate the folder where the Word file you want to upload is located, then click on that file in order to select it and then click the Choose button:

The file will then be uploaded with the same result as shown in slide 16.
