Introduction

• It’s always a challenge to maintain the active interest of an sleep-deprived audience for such a long period. Even if it’s been some time since you were an undergraduate sitting through a large lecture, simply consider what it takes to sustain your interest at an academic talk—then imagine being tested on the talk afterwards! While the lecture material may seem inherently fascinating to the lecturer, even highly motivated listeners lose concentration periodically and must find ways to reengage themselves with the lecture.

Closing Remarks

• “To know how to suggest is the great art of teaching. To attain it we must be able to guess what will interest: we must learn to read the childish soul as we might a piece of music. Then, by simply changing the key, we keep up the attraction anil vary the song.”

Henri Frederic Amiel
