How to Reduce Stress and Speed Up Weight Loss Michael Collins Q: I recently started meditating for various reasons. I haven't noticed anything different, but I've heard that meditating can slow down your metabolism. Is this true? It's highly unlikely that meditating would slow down your metabolism. Even if it did, the effect would be extremely minimal. When you meditate, you're essentially calming your mind and relaxing your body. Being in NYC which is a hotbed of stress, I've had many clients who've had success calming down and relaxing with meditation. None of them has ever mentioned a slowdown of weight loss or anything like it. Only positive reports (except from the handful of people who stopped it after the first or second session of trying it because they were bored). At the end of the day, the reduction of stress will far outweigh any negatives. Meditation is also not the only way to do it. One of the best ways to reduce stress is to start a fitness-training program. www.mcnewsletters.com Copyright 2011 Michael Collins, All Rights Reserved

DESCRIPTION

Many diseases and illnesses are the direct result of stress, and exercise helps to counter the negative effects that stress has on our mind and body. Even a light workout or a walk in the park can be beneficial for stress reduction. By increasing the intensity of the exercise our body begins to release endorphins, which makes us feel happier and this counters the effects of stress. As our levels of fitness increase we are able to handle more stress- in body and mind. Being physically fit also leads to a more positive outlook on life, and day- to- day challenges are less likely to influence this outlook. We become more alert as we get fitter, and tasks that might have been difficult become easier to achieve. This ability to expand our capability with less effort also has a dramatic effect on our stress levels.

Doesn't Stress Cause You to Gain Fat?

Recently, a friend asked about cortisol- blocking supplements she'd seen on TV to stop the negative effects of stress. I told her they're a waste of money.

She bought it anyway!

Why? Probably because I just left it at “they suck” and didn’t undo the brain washing from the commercial she had seen. It’s funny how sometimes bullsh*t wins out over reason- just because you WANT the bullsh*t to be true.

Let me clear some up some of this garbage spewed by the commercials.

Cortisol is a hormone released by the adrenal glands during times of mental or physical stress. This includes being late for work, running to catch the bus, and staying up late to study for final exams the next day.

Everyone's body releases cortisol. So why isn’t everyone in the

world obese?

Could it be there’s more to it then just cortisol?

Here’s the deal. Cortisol is released in small amounts throughout the day. It actually serves some beneficial purposes, that's why the body produces it.

Cortisol breaks down lipids and muscle fiber during periods of starvation (to keep you alive). It also plays a role in immune response to infection.

So then where does all this weight loss from blocking cortisol talk come from?

As usual, savvy business men stumble upon a piece of questionable research, and formulate a product around it. Then they market it.

(Quick food metabolism lesson)

To simplify: when you eat food, you’re getting protein/ fat/ carbs. The digestive system takes over, breaks down the food info smaller molecules and puts them to use.

However, when cortisol is raised above normal levels- like during exams week, and you’re not moving much, WHERE and HOW that food is distributed in the body changes.

The calories from the fat/ protein/ carbs will shift toward fat storage- especially around the belly (where the cortisol receptors love to deposit fat).

The amount of fat storage is obviously worse when calories are in excess of what you're burning.

Instead of taking a pill that has no scientific backing, we could

easily come up with better approaches to each situation (and

they're free!)

1) To mellow down stressful situation you could try simple deep breathing. Often, this is enough to relax the mind and stop the stress cycle. If you're in a really tense state, try some meditation or yoga.

2) If you're taking in excess calories, you know what to do: lower your intake. Simple. If you need some help, you could even invest in our book Black Book of Secrets which covers 61 fat loss tips, tricks and techniques.

3) If you're not exercising, start! Getting the body moving and the heart pumping increases the feel- good hormones, and burns calories. It also releases an influx of relaxation hormones.
