Nothing could be simpler than hairpin lace, and nothing gives o more delightful appearance for so little of your time! Basic Steps: Step 1 . . . Make a !oop at end of ball thread (l-ig. I). Step 2 . . . Insert hook in loop and ^\-ind ball ihicad ai'oinnl right prong of staple (Fig. I). Step 3 . . . Thread o\cr hook and dra«' tliroiigh loop, keeping loop at center (Fig. 1). Siep 4 . , . Raise hook lo a vertical position antl ttnn staple to the lel't (Fig. 2). Step 5 . . . Thread o\'er hook and draw through loop on hook (Fig. 3). Step 6 . . . Insert hook in loop of left prong (Fig. 4). Step 7 . . . Thread o\'er liook and draw loop through (2 loops on hook), thread o\er and dvAw through 2 loops. Step 8 . . . Repeat Steps 4 to 7 inch until staple is filled. Step 9 . . . Remo\ all but the last 4 loops fioni staple and continue as be- fore for length desired. Special Instructions for Making Items S-469 . . . S-472 . S-473 and S-477 For S-469 and S-472 . . . Repeat Steps 1 lo 6 inch of H o w to Make Basic Hair- pin Lace. Now . . . thread o\cr hook and dra^v loop through (2 loops on hook), drop first color, pick tip second color and draw tliroiigh 2 loops on hook. Colors are always changed in this manner. Then . . . repeat Steps 4. 5. fi and 7 of Basic Hairpin Lace twice, leaving the last 2 loops of second color (Step 7) on hook. Change back to first color as before and continue in this manner, making 2 loops of each color alternately for the rc(|tiired number of loops. For S-473 . . . Repeat Steps 1 to 7 inch of How to Make Basic Hairpin Lace. Now . . . repeat Steps 4, G, 7 and 9 o f Basic Hairpin Lace. Keeping White in back of work, pick up i \lid Rose and wind it around right prong of staple (Fig. I). Step 3 . . . Thread o\er hook and ch"nv through loop on hook, keeping loop at center (Fig. I).
