Rules to blog by, for blog publishers and readers

    by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Maybe HE likes all the hubbub.

    But will you?

The calm of my Cambridge, Massachusetts neighborhood was punctuated the other day by studentprotestors outside Harvard University's Science Center. There 1960's wannabees chanted "Harvard,Harvard, shame on you, honoring a racist fool."

The cause of this mayhem was Professor Martin Peretz and his latest blog post on his The NewRepublic website: "But, frankly Muslim life is cheap, most notably to Muslims." It was more thanenough to stir up a reaction from the politically correct, who live to chant and picket.

They shouted... they taunted... they heckled... and HE, owner of The New Republic, the subject of somuch fuss, got valuable, eye-catching full-page publicity in The Boston Globe, New England's paperof record.

Bingo! One of America's most experienced provocateurs had succeeded, yet again, in using his blog to geteven more publicity for his "take no prisoners" opinions.

Martin Peretz' blog had done its work and done it well.

Will yours? It most assuredly will... if you understand the true purpose of a blog, run it accordingly, and learn to be a responsible blog publisher and blog reader. Here are recommendations to assistyou.

    Bogs MUST be honest.

The purpose of a blog is to give ANYONE ANYWHERE in the world, whatever creed, class, station, nationality, or political position, the opportunity to be heard on any subject whatsoever.

Thus, your task as a blogger is to open yourself up... to tell the truth, straightforwardly, honestly, bluntly. The blog is, first and foremost, about you, its publisher and focus. To write anything otherthan the whole truth, so help you God, is to demean the medium -- and yourself.

If you are new to blogging, you'll find this kind of openness difficult, challenging. Most people growup adept at masking their true opinions. For fear of what the listener may say or do, we moderateand water down the way we really feel and what we say.

That will never do on a blog where truth is called for at all times.

Now, you may think you are a straightforward, honest person but blogging will show you soonenough that you, like all social beings, are considerably more adept at masking how we feel, our trueviews, rather than telling them.

In the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird", for instance, there is an incident that makes this point lucidly, succinctly. Atticus Finch is walking with his children past Miss DuBois' home. She is a notorioustermagant and scold. Does he say that to her? Certainly not. He lifts his hat cordially, saying "Goodafternoon, MissDuBois. You look pretty as a picture." Scout, his young daughter, says just loudenough "You notice he don't say a picture of what." Miss DuBois just catches a few words andwants to know what the impish Scout has said... but Atticus Finch is a wise man, a gentleman and

knows the value of good relations, over the strict, unyielding truth. He lifts his hat again and moveshis children along. Most of us would do the same.

But bloggers cannot. Bloggers must opt for candor, honesty at all times.

The more honest YOU are, the more reactions you will get. Take Professor Peretz, for example.Given that he is an experienced blogger, I take him at his word, when he writes his latestanti-Muslim diatribe.

Others, who feel differently, will abhor and detest what he has written... and propose such sanctionsas having a speaking engagement at Harvard cancelled. But this is wrong.

Voltaire, that very clever fellow, said it best:

"I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

Unfortunately, sanctimonious members of the Academy (usually the least intelligent on campus)have forgotten their true calling: facilitating free speech, not suffocating and penalizing it. Blogs, then, do the work academicians should do (the reason they are given tenure to do), but are now toooften emasculated, self-protecting and lazy to do.

Thus, when you write, the objective is always to achieve Harvard's ultra clear motto: "Veritas", thepure and always unsimple truth.

    Write regularly,consistently.

One of the major problems with most blogs is that they are not regularly produced. Remember, whatever else a blog may be it is also and always the story of your life. It is a window into yourthoughts and occupations. Blogs must therefore be regularly undertaken. Don't start it.... unless youmean to do it.

Write regularly and consistently, being always aware that the first day you do not feel like writingyour blog is the very day you must be sure to write it... or risk the ending of your blog altogether.

The more honest you are, the more and stronger reader reaction you should expect.

When Professor Peretz posted his incendiary opinions about Moslims (a subject on which he writesoften), I suspect he knew that tea cups in Cambridge and beyond would be rattled. What's more, being a true provocateur,he probably relishes the instant, insistent responses of those he hasprovoked. He might not like being followed through Harvard Yard by hecklers... but he cannot trulyhave been awfully surprised by such a response. Relish, rather than alarm, was most probably hisreaction.

    You, too, need to reach this level of reaction and response as you achieve greater candor andhonesty in your bog. Because as my grandfather used to say, some damned idiot is sure to protest;

the stronger the opinions rendered, the stronger the response from those disagreeing. (He wouldhave been a great blogger, grandfather Walt would have been.)

Prepare for the reaction... expect it... ignore it.

Blogging is one of the jewels of the Internet... treat it with care and consideration.

Millions and millions of folks have come and gone on this planet without leaving even a foot print inthe dust. To our chagrin and detriment, we do not know them in any way at all. But blogging haschanged all that, not merely for the potent and celebrated... but even unto the lowest among us. Atlast they have a place for their opinions...not matter how alarming, uninformed, and (to the rest ofus) silly they may be. And this is a very good thing... for our job is to cherish the bloggers,

protecting and defending them, even at their most reprehensible and loathsome. And that includesyou, too, Professor Peretz, as you sit in comfort and security here in Cambridge, spewing venom. Idefend to the death your right to say it... and blog it worldwide. Defending you, I have done the rightthing, while taking joy from the fact that every hostile word you blog drives down the certifiedcirculation figures of your moribund rag, The New Republic. In the end the marketplace, notcensorship, will determine your fate. So blog on....

How to write web site and article content that sells

    by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

It was Bill Gates, the sage with prophetic talents and the deepest of pockets, who said it first:"Content is king." Per usual billionaire Bill was right.

Problem is, he omitted the directions on how to produce the site and article content you need so

much. Humbly, I rectify his omission.

Here then are the necessary steps for producing web site and article copy that sells.

    1) Know thy audience.

The purpose of creating site content is to build relationships and loyalty with your designatedpopulations... and produce content that gets them to RETURN and RESPOND.

Are you, therefore, clear on just who you are producing content for?

Say you are running an insurance agency and want to insure more business from people with largeand valuable art and artifact collections. Before you write word 1 of content, you must know andWRITE DOWN a description of the kinds of people you want to attract. Every word you writethereafter, all the content you produce is for -- them!

    2) Write content that brings you business

In this report, I am showing you how to write site content that sells. For details on how to write thegreat American novel, you must seek other counsel.

Thus, your next step towards producing site content that sells is to brainstorm subjects and to craftthe all-important title.

Again, consider the insurance agent aiming for lucrative antique collection accounts. He needs a title

like this: "7 things you need to know about insuring your antiques and collections." Alternatively, try this

"7 things you don't know about insuring your antiques that make you vulnerable."

Or, "5 things you can do right now to decrease the cost of your antiques insurance."

Note: a title like this peeks reader interest... the public designated for this content wants to know, isdesperate to know, just where there may be holes, flaws, and omissions in their policies. Yourcontent (and your title) play to their need to know, including fears and anxieties which motivateprompt response to you.

    3) Brainstorm subjects to be included in your article or site contentThe most cogent content is brainstormed and outlined before a single word is written. First, andmost importantly, sit down at your desk and write down the topics you want (and your reader musthave) in this content.

Personally, I take one 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet and (in my execrable hand writing) detail all the keypoints about the subject at hand.

Then, having brainstormed all, I arrange these points in logical order, thus: first do this, then this, then this, etc.

    7/37

Brainstorm and point prioritizing are key to successful content.

Note: for best results, you should have no fewer than 5 points in any individual article or not morethan 10. The content may appear skimpy and inadequate if you have too few points while havingmore than 10 over burdens your reader (and future customer), causing him to postpone reading -- andresponse!

    4) Now write.

You are now ready to write the content, for you have considered your audience and what they needto know (and will most thank you for); you have brainstormed the subjects to be included andarranged them in the proper order. Yes, you are ready to write.

Sit yourself down in your writing place (you do have one, don't you), a place where you can writeundisturbed, inviolate to the crafting of superb content

Go there now. Determine your writing schedule. You should be able to produce draft site content in2-4 hours, depending on how experienced a writer you are. Always set a date and time for theconclusion of Draft 1. Never leave it open-ended. Things without deadlines are things less likely tobe done.

Note: Remember, what you are writing now must be a conversation between you and your reader(who is, let's be clear, your future customer, too.) The content must, therefore, be writtenaccordingly. The word "you" (meaning you, the reader) must predominate. You must not write foran amorphous audience of the unknown. You must write instead to and for the chief benefit of eachindividual reader... just as if the reader was sitting beside you and you were explaining one thingafter another of importance to her. This is vital.

    5) Read, review, revise your content.

Now hear this: the best writing is re-writing. Thus, when you have finished Draft 1, let it sitovernight. It is the rare, experienced, polished writer who can write such content, review suchcontent, and post the finished product all in a day. Some may disagree, but I remain convinced timeand patience are necessary ingredients in the very best content.

When ready, read your content aloud. No sentence should be more than one breath. If yoursentences are turgid and flow slowly, awkward, break them into shorter lines, easier to read. Yourtempo should be allegro, not andante.

    6) Revise, revise, revise.

Having finished your first revisions, it is time for... more revisions. As much time should be spent onrevising your content as writing it in the first place. This, then, should be your schedule:

Day 1, write the content. On this same day, do the first revisions.

Day 2, after letting the content sit overnight, awake early (personally I do this between 5-7 ambecause that is when my schedule is clear and I have the fewest interruptions. In other words, I canfocus.) Then do at least one more content revision.

    3) On Day 3, do a final content review. There should be few, if any, changes at this point. Yourcontent should be word perfect, light, graceful, moving; content that will impact the reader, becauseit impacts you!

    7) The Resource Box

Now add the crucial Resource Box and About the Author details. Having written content that helps

your reader and future customer, it is now manifestly appropriate to include something that helpsyou... and that is precisely what the Resource Box and About the Author sections do. Treat themaccordingly.

Be sure to include all the means you wish customers to use to get in touch with you, including email,URL, telephone, cell phone, etc. Believe me, the useful content you have given them will inspireresponse. Depend on it.

    Exult. You deserve it!

You have now done a useful thing. Your content is now available for use on blogs, ezines, sitepostings, et al. Take a moment to congratulate yourself. You deserve it.

You have taken what you know and can do and transformed it into a focused means of generatingnew customers and really helping them. You may be a tad fatigued by your effort; that's natural. Butwhat you've written can live for years and help thousands. And that's a true cause for jubilation.

autoblogging work? Can you really generate a ton of passive income just from setting up these littleniche blogs and then leaving them to fend for themselves? Here are some things that you might hearabout autoblogging:

Autoblogging is nothing but a scam Most likely written either by folks who have tried it and failed,or who simply dismiss the concept out-of-hand because they firmly believe that they only way toblog is by creating unique content daily.

Autoblogging is your gateway to untold Internet Marketing riches At the other end of the spectrumyou might here claims that autoblogging is your ticket to riches and fame. Those messages are mostoften promulgated by those who are selling an autoblogging product.

The truth about autoblogging Somewhere in between the idea that autoblogging is a black hat scam, and the idea that you can auto-blog your way to untold wealth is the truth that falls somewhere inbetween those extremes.

Massive Passive Income: What are the Differences betweenWordPress and WordPress MU?

Wordpress is the free, wildly popular blogging platform that millions of bloggers use to power theirblogs. Many web hosts offer a quick install script for Wordpress that will allow you to have a blogset up and ready to receive fresh content in about 10 minutes or less.

Wordpress MU, with the MU standing for multi-user, used to be a separately developed solution forsetting up a network of blogs which allowed blogs to have multiple users each with their owndashboard and theme. But since the launch of Wordpress version 3.0, all of the functionality ofWordpress MU that was once separate has now been folded into the basic Wordpress software. So,now there really is no difference between Wordpress and Wordpress MU as they are now one andthe same product.

For a classic example of Wordpress MU, take a look at Wordpress.com. It represents a single installof the Wordpress software that allows you to run hundreds or even thousands of separate blogs.Wordpress MU is often used by newspapers, magazines and blog networks. It's also a great solutionfor schools and universities as well as small or big companies that want to set up public or private

blogging networks. The beauty of the system is that administrators can perform management taskson a site-wide basis on a single login to the main dashboard.

Can you see now how amazing this is for marketers who previously had to install a new instance ofWordpress for each separate blog? That meant logging in and logging out of each blog, doing thesame maintenance tasks such as database backups and managing plug-ins over and over. Imagine ifyou wanted to set up a network of niche blogs on various topics. Traditionally, you?d set up eachblog, set up the Adsense or whatever ad network you were using, create the content and then moveon to the next one. It's a labor-intensive process that is now obsolete thanks to Massive PassiveProfits.

Massive Passive Profits is a mass deploy autoblogging system that allows users to automate the set

up and content generation of wordpress multiuser sites. But isn't autoblogging an easy way to getyour site banned? Absolutely not. Autoblogging, if done correctly can automate the creation of nicheblogs which aggregate content on a particular topic that people are searching for. When they land onyour blog they will find the information that they were looking for, along with some ads selected toappeal to your niche target market.

Autoblogging takes the sweat out of setting up and maintaining a blog network and puts thislucrative, passive income opportunity within the reach of many more people. If you've been runninga bunch of blogs the traditional way that is painstakingly researching and writing the contentyourself, or hiring a freelancer to do it, you know that this method is time consuming and expensiveon the front end.

How to get thousands and thousands of responses to yourblog... and what to do when you get 'em.

    by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Of course you already have a blog, right? You are, I mean, on the cutting edge of the Internet, yes?

Well, if you are still blog-less today is indeed your lucky day, because I am going to show you righthere, right now how to use your blog to get not a few but a positive avalanche of the best prospectleads on earth. And the great thing is, you can start today, this very minute.

Now affirm and reaffirm this: when you're in business, running a business blog, the objective is andalways will be to generate terrific prospect leads... and follow them up to make money.

It's easy to forget the objective when you're publishing a blog which can all too easily be seized bythe shear joy and vanity of seeing your name in print. Folks, if you need lovin' and crave adulationget a dog. They give unqualified affection. But don't subvert the purpose of your blog.

    Nothing sells itself, absolutely nothing.

I have amongst my marketing students some of the very brightest people around... and when theymake a mistake, I know the pedestrian run of mankind and marketers are making it, too, in spades.

One of the most rooted errors of these folks is the pernicious, invidious notion that their blog and itscontents will sell themselves; that what they are promoting and selling in their blogs needs nointroduction, nor powerful words of recommendation; it's good enough on its lonesome.

In a word: rubbish! In two words: complete rubbish!

Dear friend, there is nothing in this world, not the policies and messages of presidents, popes, andsovereign kings; not the very finest example of the most potent of salubrious medications; not thesafest swiftest modes of transportation.... absolutely nothing sells itself.

Once you have realized this essential truth of business, you enter a new, higher level of commerceand marketing... for you are now a puffer in the Great Age of Puffery.... and your daily objective isclear: to puff better, more artfully, more carefully, more successfully than any other puffers on thisplanet. He (or she) who puffs the most, the best, reaps the most.

Thus, say you intend tomorrow to publish a jim dandy article on some subject of note andsignificance. The duffer puffer, the one on the bottom of the marketing heap, merely publishes thearticle, with this unvoiced sentiment: "Here's the article. Make of it what you will. I can't bebothered to tell you why you should read it... perhaps I don't even know."

And some dare call this marketing.

    Now, try this instead...

(puff the day before you publish the article.)

Tomorrow, you readers have an incredible gift coming. I persuaded internationally known authorand commentator Dr. Jeffrey Lant to let me have, in advance of publication, his latest article. Itdetails the truth about the relationship of Snow White with those with-it guys, the 7 Dwarfs. Youwon't believe what one of the most perceptive commentators around has discovered about Snow...and those Dwarfs. Can you say 'Happy.' You certainly will tomorrow...."

With these fast-moving words, you are keeping your audience, your present and future customers all,

on the very edge of their seats. You want them in a pother of anticipation and excitement about WhatHappens Next. You, cleverkins, are ascending in the crucial business of puffery; selling the sizzle, not the steak. And you're frolicking all the way to the bank.

Remember, puffing is not something occasional or episodic. It is not merely one essential thing inmarketing; it is the essential thing and it must be regarded accordingly... from this moment on. Letme make this point absolutely, crystal clear:

If you want to sell a product, you must puff it.

If you want to sell your service, you must puff it.

If you want a person to read your blog, you must puff it.

If you want that same person to read an article in that blog, you must puff it.

    Get the picture?

    A few more hints

Your puffs must appear prominently in your blog, at least 1 at the top of the first page.

They must be short, enticing, action oriented. They must radiate a single imperative message: Lookat all you get, look how delicious it is, grab it, grab it now...'

    Here's another example.

"Wow! I'm ecstatic to tell you that I've snagged another one of Dr. Lant's superb articles. Yesterdaynearly 400 of you smarties emailed me with your thanks, congratulations, and sincere appreciationfor his last insightful article. Now I've got another for you. Stay tuned... you'll have it in justHOURS. Make sure to email me at once with your reactions and compliments... it's anotherwinner!!! You can reach me by email (email address here); cell phone (number here)... or land line(number here.) And I want to hear from each and EVERY one of you!"

You must get on with the essential business of puffing each and every day, without exception, thatyou want money.

And, I guarantee you, that as you improve in your puffery, you will improve your prospectresponses, dramatically.

And your bottom line? Why that will improve, too, and dramatically so if and only if you follow upeach and every response, as quickly as possible, with a special offer. In other words, thank therespondents, thank them as soon as possible... and always give them a thing (or two) which makesyou money. Thus are you benefited as you benefit your fast-responding prospects.

There are many things, of course, which factor into consummate blog success. They include

    * having good content, interesting, practical, timely;

    * publishing according to a schedule, never missing a deadline;

    * writing directly to your readers, always using "you";

    * keeping every word of text short, peppy, upbeat,

Accept the New Online World TrendFacebook Marketing

Did you know that Facebook now ranks second for traffic generation among all thewebsites on theInternet? It is second only to Google in terms of the traffic it gets.

Right now, there are approximately 500 million active users on Facebook, and the number isincreasing with each passing day. Think about it. This kind of population ismore than most countriesof the world. In fact, there are only three countries that have apopulation higher than that!

Online marketers have been quite quick to latch on to the immense popularity of Facebook. Theyknow that if they make a presence here, they are opening their business out to the worldgettingglobal exposure in a way that they cannot do by anything else. Studies show that the number ofFacebook users have increased by one-fourth over the last year in 47 countries. Naturally, no onlinemarketer worth their salt is going to let this opportunity pass. This has given rise to the concept ofFacebook marketing.

Most of these online marketers who are making the most of Facebook marketing know the relevanceof projecting their profiles in a particular way. That is evident because these people are lookingbeyond simple social networking. They are trying to build acreditable network, a fan base for their

business that they can tap into for their business profits. One of the things that they do is to create a professional business page for themselves instead of theroutine profiles that people create on Facebook. These professional pages give out a no-nonsenseimpression of their business to their target niche. Infact, with the help of recent applications like FBMaxed, it is possible for Internet entrepreneurs to place their entire website onto their Facebookprofile. This helps them create the right impression in their market and they can even make thesewebsites with clickable URLs so that interested people can go and visit the real thing. Thesewebsites can embed videos right into the Facebook profile page itself. All these things do make ahuge difference.

With the great popularity of Facebook, the concept of Facebook marketing has gained in strength as

well. People are now coming to Facebook with the idea of finding a good product that they wouldlike to invest in. It also gives them a chance to discover a new product and check out the reviewsfrom fellow Facebookers. On the other hand, formarketers, applications like FB Maxed have createdan immense potential to take their products out to the niche market.

Indeed, Facebook marketing is here to stay!

What you need to know and do to be a GREAT blogpublisher!

    by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Have you noticed that blogs are popping up online everywhere? Yes, blogging is the phenomenon ofthe age. You just need to know how to profit from it. These suggestions will help.

    1) Be clear on your objective.

The people who are successful with blogging, that is the people who are making money from it, allare very clear on what they are writing their blog to accomplish. If you're writing a business blogyour objective is crystal clear: you blog to profit and for no other reason.

Too many (particularly new) blogsters have mixed objectives. Sure, they want to make money but, perhaps even more (and dangerously) they write to get their share of the limelight.

    Don't make that mistake.

When you're in business your blog exists for one reason and one reason only: to put money in your

pocket, as quickly and substantially as possible.

    2) Never forget the deal you have with your readers.

People who run successful (that is to say money-making) blogs never lose sight of the implicit dealthey have with their readers, viz.

Publisher: I will email you information of value and consequence. I shall also send you (in the sameissue) ad copy for your earnest and honest consideration.

Reader: So long as you email me superior copy, I shall do two important things: I will read thiscopy, and I shall also (at least ) glance at your ads.

This is the basis for a mutually satisfactory relationship.

    3) Understand your role as a publisher.

Publishers become publishers for two major reasons: because they have something important to sayand want to influence the world AND to make money. Thus in every issue you must offer superiorcontent...and prospect-centered ad copy. The key here is keeping this equation balanced.

If you run nothing but superior content, your readers may be delighted... but you'll make no moneyand, in short order, give up the enterprise.

If you run nothing but (or even too many) ads, your reader will immediately get bored...and punish

you not just by trashing your current issue but trashing all future issues without even a glance.

Publishing, then, is all about balance.

    4) Study the great publishers and their empire-building methods and procedures.

The minute you have a blog, you have become a publisher... and the minute you become a publisheryou become a card-carrying member of the greatest professional association on earth: publishering. Now you are part of a grand tradition. Make it a point to understand what that means by studying thegreat practitioners of your business. This includes people like Gutenberg and his Bible (1455)...Canadian Lord Beaverbrook who seized English newspapers the better to manipulate ministries and

imperial politics and his tenacious rival Viscount Rothermere... and the great publishing families ofAmerica whose names alone remind us of what publishers can do to generate wealth for themselveswhile shaping the course of a great nation starting with William Randolph Hearst...

The Taylors of Boston... the McCormicks of Chicago... the Chandlers of Los Angeles.... and theircounterparts in every significant city on earth.

You, you!, are now one of their number, and I can tell you this about such people, they were all, to aperson,

    * big thinkers

    * people who meant to shape events, not just witness them

    * determined to have their point of view not just seen but dominant.

The small, the trivial, the inconsequential and insignificant had absolutely no place in theirpublications or their lives. These are the people, your professional ancestors, it behooves us all tostudy and emulate.

These were people of amazing, irrepressible energies and imaginations. They didn't moan and groan

about their "work", the time it took, the sacrifices they had to make to do it. They were grateful forthe opportunity to create vehicles of wealth and influence, thrilled to get up each and every day andset about their work, stamping the world with their mark... and eager, too.

Is this how you approach the business of your blog? If it isn't, re-examine your reasons for creatingand publishing a blog and once you have done so absorb these home truths about the business:

    * Say something significant in every issue. We all want to "make a difference" with our lives. Whenyou're a with-it publisher, this is easy to do. Make it clear that yours is a blog designed to make this abetter world; there is no higher calling than that.

    * Always ask your readers to respond. "Bribe" them, if necessary, to do so... offer them something

of value that induces them to respond quickly and meaningfully. Such people become your bestcustomers.

    * Publish to a schedule. The best way to blog is daily. If you aspire to significance and substantialrewards no other schedule should even be considered.

    * Talk directly, frankly to your readers. Be for them what every great publisher must be: a candid, direct, honest to a fault advocate of humane and progressive change. Publishing, you see, is nevermerely about transmitting information; it is about seizing minds and changing lives... about throwingdown gauntlets and taking up causes... and always informing, motivating, energizing, enthusing andtransforming.

Make today the day you rethink and recreate your blog. The most stimulating game on earth is influencing others and so shaping the world you want. This isthe gift all (good) blog publishers get... but you get it if and only if you focus on providing peoplewith blog posts of interest, significance, and value. Nothing less can or should be set before the mostimportant people in your business life: your blog readers.

From now on, focus each day on what you want to share with them; what you know that can changeand improve their lives... and how you will present it to them for maximum impact and long-lastingeffect. They must see you for what you are: their great and valued friend and counselor, operatingthrough and touching their lives in your blog.

Master blog article writer tells you exactly how to writearticles that get read and responded to.

    By Dr. Jeffrey Lant

It is a pleasure to have this opportunity to spend some time with you and provide the detailedstep-by-step information you must have to get the attention of the people on your list and get them to

respond -- and rain well deserved compliments on you and your notable blog work.Let's dig right in; there's lots of ground to cover.

    1) The purpose of blog articles.

Know much about space travel? Here's a crucial part that astronauts pay a lot of attention to: the heatshields that protect a space capsule returning to earth. Without these shields the capsule and thepassengers within would be fried. The same thing happens when you mail ad copy and nothing butad copy to your lists. Recipients will get plenty angry plenty fast. They want more from you thanjust ads, and if they don't get it, the unsubscribe link is near at hand.

Blog copy is essential because it keeps subscribers on your list by giving them a good reason forstaying on your list. In short, like those heat shields, this copy protects the list and keeps it whole, growing, profitable.

    2) Don't publish random articles.

Give your articles increased weight and importance by creating them as part of an ongoing series. When you write good copy, copy of substance and value, people not only want to read it... but theywant more, lots more, from you, a person whose articles and opinion they come to respect.

    3) Number each article and announce that number along with each article.

As I write (August 6, 2011), this is my 312 article in the series. You want people to know that, not

least because they will want to find and profit from the other articles in the series, all the otherarticles. Furthermore, as your list of articles grows, so will your reputation and perceived standing. In short, you will be an authority, a commentator of renown and repute.

    4) Write your blog articles to a certain length, and stick to it.

My daily blog articles (which I produce free for blog owners worldwide) are all approximately 1500words in length. That is three single-spaced pages. This length gives you ample space to develop anarticle on any given theme. It is also a convenient length for readers, not too long or demanding;crucial features in our time-pressed days. Once you have developed your format, you will soon startthinking in terms of your available space and will find it easier and easier the more you write toconceive and write articles of that length.

    5) Always search for and brainstorm new article subjects.

I am on a dizzing blog article creation pace: one 1,500 word blog article per day. This is achallenging schedule for even the most experienced writers. That means I need 365 article subjectsper year, challenging indeed. But even if you decide to write just one blog article per week, you'llneed 52 subjects to write about, nothing to take for granted.

When you write blog articles, you are always and forever in the business of finding hot new articlesubjects. To start, get the major metropolitan newspaper from your area; (for me that's The BostonGlobe)... and a pair of scissors. Now sit down and review this newspaper with a new eye; an eye

that's seeking interesting, timely, readers-will-love-this subjects.

Make time to cut these articles from the publication. Don't fall behind with this crucial task. In mycase, I review and cut out three times a week, more if at all possible.

Keep a good pair of sharp scissors at hand. Look at each article in each edition to see whether anarticle on that theme or subject would fit your blog. If so, cut at once and make sure to dateeverything you cut out. That's a must.

Then deposit what you've found in a large drawer... this is the article subject compost heap and it isessential. In it you will find subjects you will surely want to write about... and subjects you'rewatching, to write about at some future date. Cut liberally; you can be sure one day you will have nosubject readily at hand. Having all these ideas will then pirove very useful indeed.

    6) Select the next subject you'll write about, gather the information you need to do so.

The creation of articles of substance, articles that draw continual kudos from your readers, is a directresult of knowing where to look for the information you need. The better you become at thisnecessary task, the better articles you will produce and the faster your reputation grows, too.

Start by doing a search at any search engine (I prefer Google) to see what information is available.

Where you are writing an article about a breaking news item, don't just check the availableinformation, also pay close attention to the time the most recent material was posted (e.g. "7 hoursago"). This is essential for keeping what you write ahead of the news cycle. For timely articles, thisskill is required.

Then visit the Wikipedia. The Wikipedia is one of the most ingenious and necessary tools everinvented. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't use it, finding and printing the invaluableinformation I absolutely must have do my work... one aspect of which is studding my articles withthe facts therein so amply provided. This source is crucial.

You will also need to visit the websites of article providers such as Associated Press, Reuter's,Bloomberg, etc. They are a terrific source of article subjects and timely data.

    7) Brainstorm articles.

You and your lifetime of education and experience are also valuable sources for articles. Keep a padat the ready, or an Internet file, where ALL possible article subjects can be listed. Never, ever relyon forgetful memory for such subjects. Write them down at once.

    8) Set a precise date for finishing all articles.

I write and blog my articles daily. I have a precise time of the day when the deadline for the nextarticle MUST be met: 8 a.m. Eastern time. To do this I find all the data I'l need the day before andreview it before bed time. Then I am awake and drafting, editing, then finalizing the day's article by

3 a.m. Eastern time; that is not a misprint! I have found the silent hours of the (usually)uninterrupted night the very best time to write, not least because I am wide awake and full of beansat that time. You'll find the schedule most suitable for you; set it, adhere to it religiously. You willfind if you do that your brain and body will be willing to work at that time, and that is a greatbenefit.

    9) Keep individual files for every article you write.

These files should contain all the printed information sources for this subject as well as all yournotes and each draft. Everything pertaining to this article (including the compliments readers emailyou) must be kept, not least because you may very well decide to write follow-up and related

Straight talk about blogging. How to turn your blog into amoney maker, with special information for your not-for-profitorganization.

    By Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Friend, have you got a blog yet? If not, you are not falling behind, you ARE behind. You see, a blog

is a critical tool for making money online, whether you are selling products or need to raisedonations for your not-for-profit organization.

    What is a blog?

A blog is a conversation between you and your customers and donors. It enables you to present yourmessage clearly, precisely, with the unfiltered emphasis solely on what you want these folks to knowand do. When you blog, you call the shots and determine just what you want people to know andjust when you want them to know it. When you blog no one can intervene in what you say or howyou say it. It is 100% you, 100% of the time. The trick is knowing how to use this incrediblecommunications device and power for maximum results.

    Non-Profit organizations and the blog.

If you're running any kind of not-for-profit organization establishing a blog and using it to educateyour supporters and donors is a must, especially now when the world is going through a particularlybad economic patch and many of your donors may be cutting back on the gifts which are essentialfor you doing your important work. When such periods occur (as they regularly do) you need to beeven sharper about how to raise money... and your blog is an absolutely essential tool for doing so.

Donors want to know where their money goes.

If you want donors to keep giving to your organization, then you must tell them just what you needthe money for... and inform them as you spend it. Blogs are ideal for this.

Say you're in the business of providing services to the elderly. Without a blog you are very limited inyour ability to inform your donors. With a blog, the sky's the limit.

    Your blog should contain

    1) precisely what you are doing.

    2) why it's necessary.

    3) what you would like to be able to do.

    4) how much that would cost.

For not-for-profit organizations a blog becomes a way to talk simultaneously about the results you'regetting... and the crucial tasks you could undertake if you had more funds.

    Here's the formula:

    1) We have raised (dollar amount).

    2) With it we are doing (specific activities).

    3) We need to raise (amount).

    4) Which will enable us to do (more specific activities).

    Making your blog really interesting.

Blogs that work are blogs that are interesting. Here's how you ensure that your blog captivatesreaders and keeps them coming back.

    1) Focus on key people in your organization. Let donors see the people who are using the moneythey've given.

    2) Provide donor testimonials. People who are considering donating will like to hear what others aredoing and why.

    3) Feature the people who are benefiting from your service. They can provide valuable informationabout what you've done and how it helps.

    Develop a "wish list".

Every non-profit organization on earth knows it could accomplish more if it had more funds. Useyour blog to talk about what you'd like to do... and what it will cost to do it. Break down majorprojects into do-able bits... projects should never be seen as too big and too complicated. Big

projects should be divided into stages.Your wish list needs to be carefully considered and presented. It should always be clear, understandable and capable of being achieved day by day, donor by donor.

    Have a "we wished" list.

Here's something you've never heard before: don't just talk about what you want to accomplish. Talkabout items which have been on your wish list.... but which are now accomplished fact. When youtalk about such items, thank lavishly. Who helped you achieve this beneficial thing... who gavemoney... who gave time... who volunteered, reached out, helped? Talking about the "we wished"items gives you the chance to give the gift of recognition.

Bring crucial information to your supporters and donors.

Part of your job is to provide continuing, in-depth information on the problem your organizationaddresses. To do this keep your eyes open and keep searching for timely, pertinent information.

When you see an article that pertains to what you're doing; when an important new study comes out;when there's new information from the government, let your audience know.

You can do so either by emailiing the details or, better, simply by emailng the link to the informationwith a brief introduction on why you're sending this. Remember: any chance you have toconstructively interact with your supporters must and should be taken... this is how long-term,productive relationships are born and develop.

Share the good news... and the bad.

Remember, a blog used properly is the basis for an infinite number of long-term relationships. Suchrelationships must be honest, candid, real. This is especially true when things are bad. Open up toyour supporters about what happened and why... and what you're doing -- right now -- to solve theproblem. Believe me, I know how difficult opening up to your supporters in this way will be; youwant to be perceived as "superperson"... but you're not. You're just a human, like everyone else, doing the best you can day by day, needing the help of other humans to achieve the objectives. Thisdoesn't mean turning your blog into a psychiatrist's couch... it does mean being open with yoursupporters.

How often should you communicate with your supporters, donors, friends and well- wishers?

As often as necessary; whenever you have something important to say to them; whenever a wordfrom you makes sense and can strengthen the relationship. In other words regularly, frequently.

How to write the best blog, in the least time.

Every organization needs a blog-meister, someone who is responsible for ensuring that the blog goes

out regularly, consistently packed with all the details that you want readers to know. To achieve thisresult, delegate as much as possible.

    1) If you're the sole person in your business or organization, write your blog a few minutes everyday. The rest of the day, brainstorm items you want in your blog... and keep them in your important"blog idea file." In other words, when you're not actually writing your blog, you're thinking about it.

    2) Ask others in your organization to help. Ask the person who's in charge of a new product to writeup a blog post that tells why the product is important... what it does... why it's necessary, etc.

    3) Ask the individual who's in charge of an important project to write an article about how things aregoing... and what needs to be done to keep things rolling along.

    4) Ask an active volunteer to write a blurb on why she's so active... with a view to enthusing readersto tell you they want to help, too.

    5) Use pictures and graphics to make your blog more visually appealing.

One more thing: be sure to contact me and let me know how this article and its detailedrecommendations have helped you. I'd really like to know.

Semper paratus. What every boy scout knows will help youcreate blog copy that can be used forever while you (andrightly) congratulate yourself, smartie.

    By Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Author's program note. My mother used regularly to bring down the house when she'd say "When I

was a cub scout (when Abe Lincoln was president)..." and then her usual sharp-as-a-tackobservation on any subject under the sun. We'd all laugh and knew POM (Poor Old Mother) waschipper indeed, all being well.

So I can affirm that when she was a cub scout, when Honest Abe was president, every one of thosescouts, as a matter of urgent priority, knew at least two words of Latin... "semper paratus," alwaysready.

And I am glad to tell you that our ship-shape lads and lassies of the United States Coast Guard knowthese words as well. Which is why this vital part of the nation's defenses uses them, enshrined asthey are in a bouncy composition, as peppy and upbeat as America itself. It seems the lyrics were

written first by Captain Francis Saltus Van Boskerck in 1922. The music was composed later, in1927, on a "beat-up old piano" while his ship was stationed in Unalaska, Alaska, which is no doubtthis burg's undying (and perhaps only) claim to fame.

But here the puzzles and conundra begin. Why did Homer Smith, that busy body, change the lyricsin 1943, jarring the spirit and eternal serenity of Captain Francis, only to have his words rewrittenagain in 1969? Perhaps "paratus" wasn't as "semper" as they thought.

And here, I must add yet another "semper", an admonition to all writers, artists and composers whovalue the calm and peace of their auditors and readers: please, I implore you, having finished youropus, record for inquiring humanity the facts about it, who wrote it, your birth (and sad to say death)date, the circumstances of its creation, etc. anything, in fact, which will impart to all eternity key

facts about your inspired work. If you do this, you are sure to get -- and keep -- the undying credityou deserve. And isn't this, after all, what you want?

Before commencing this article, go to any search engine and play that rousing "Semper Paratus"march... sing along, too, with the lyrics that will help turn your blog into a great money machine, thecynosure of every discerning eye:

" 'Semper Paratus' is our guide, Our fame, our glory, too. To fight to save, or fight and die!"

The vital importance not merely of having a blog... but of having a growing archive of material youcan use in your blog, re-use, and use yet again.

This article was inspired by an article I wrote August 22, 2011 on Moammar Khadafy, the collapseof his murderous regime, and my commentary on what this important event meant for Libya, itspeoples, and the world. It was blogged just as the capital city of Tripoli was freed, for the first time inover 4 decades of barbarism. The article was timely, powerful, valid, prophetic. As such, it generatedwidespread interest and tens of thousands of reader comments and heartfelt reactions. It alsoprovided a means for the people allowed to blog it to publish their ads along with this insightfularticle, just as any other publisher bringing this story to their readers... and making moneysimultaneously; the essential formula for successful blogging.

For these traditional publishers their article on the fall of Tripoli and the regime of repression anddeath, was run once and once only... but for the blog publishers running this article, these wise folks

acquired not merely an article... but a tool they could use for weeks, months and even years tocome... with only the need to write a new, timely preface and their own observations matured asevents progressed and developed.

Your first task is to stop thinking of yourself as a traditional periodical publisher and think instead ofyourself as an innovative blog publisher, supremely knowledgeable and clever about, first, writingand publishing, and, then, updating and re-using every single word you write.

Here then are the crucial steps you must take to take advantage -- remember, for months and yearsahead -- of your golden words.

    1) Write regularly. Personally, I write at least 18-20 new blog articles each and every month. Eacharticle is approximately 1,500 words in length and fits into one of the over 25 subject categories inwhich I write blog commentary. These subjects range from American politics, to literature, music, world history and events, appreciations for the lives and achievements of famous people... andpeople you have never heard of... and many more. The more topics you write on, the more peoplewill be glad to receive your blog... and read and respond to the ads which you simultaneously send. And, remember, sending these ads... and reaping the rewards that accrue as a result... is a primereason for publishing your blog in the first place.

    2) Develop a file of headlines and prefaces to accompany each (re-used) article. Use language likethis:

    Back by popular demand!

Our readers loved this article the first time round, you'll love it, too.

We received thousands of responses from this article. Here it is again... read it and please respond atonce.

New developments on (subject). That's why you'll want to read this and respond at once.

    Get the picture?

You need to open a file and regularly add verbiage designed to motivate, excite, and enthuse yourreaders... and you must always be alert to motivating configurations of language... and, of course, adding them to this file at once... never trusting to frail and fallible human memory.

    3) Now pay attention to the world and its events by following the well-known all news channels and,of course, online sources. Your job is to be aware of what's happening... then pull articles on thesame or related topics from your archive, update, then blog them.. along with your ad copy... as fastas you can. One of my esteemed and smart colleagues, Alan Schmitt of San Diego, California is awhiz at this.

He was watching CNN when the news broke about the death of dictator Khadafy. He went to my

blog at jeffreylantarticles.com as he was authorized and entitled to do... and within 5 minutes hadpulled the article, read it, made his comments and blogged it... to gratifying and profitable results. He just informed me that he did the same thing today using an important article on the NewHampshire primary I wrote some months ago, as part of my series on American politics. Again, simply by adding a few words, he squeezed more gold and benefit from this timely article.Bravissimo!

Now get started! Because now you are indeed "semper paratus"... ready to jump on and profit from aconstantly growing number of articles which can easily be updated... and so turned, time and again,to money in your pocket. For in the words of that perky march, today's occasional music, "We'realways ready for the call."

How to Create Blog Titles that DEMAND attention!

If you are going to spend the time it requires to blog then you want to make certain your time is forthe maximum return.

You want readers right? You want your blog to be shared in social media right? You want moretraffic so you earn more money right?

Smart bloggers who earn considerable revenue from their blogs, know it's critical to havewell-thought blog titles.

Here I share some critical points about writing blog titles so you get noticed among the millions ofblogs out there.

For effective blog titles do this:

A great blog title gets the readers attention then draws them in so they actually read your blog.Remember, some web sites, readers and devices like cell phones and iPad aps, show only the title ofyour blog. Your introduction or summary of what the blog is about may not even appear so yourtitle better be instantly eye-popping and interesting. If readers see only your title, and your title is

lame, you are less likely to get readership. Instead make your title catchy, one that immediatelyconveys what the blog is about so readers think you are click-worthy. Be sure that your title is notword-heavy but is clear and obvious. Readers what to know right away what you have to offer andif its worthy of their precious time to read. When you read my examples below you will get a betterunderstanding of what goes into a Blog Title that DEMANDS readership.

Creating blog titles that will get indexed by search engines, and read by people.

When creating your titles you want to use as many key words related to your blog content as youcan. Before you even start your blog post, think about who you want to read this post and what keywords are relevant to your purposes and to your audience. If your blog is targeting a specificaudience, try to work that into the title so your title speaks and says to the individual - HEY README! If you want people to read your blog who are looking for specific key words related to whatyou offer, work those key words into the title.

Consider that people are busy, often they prefer short, easy to read blog posts. Ensure if you can thatyour blog title relays this by summarizing what you blog includes.

Don't compromise the value of your key words by being too creative in your title, make sure they areincluded in your title. With Google recently announcing that fresh content contributes to higher pageranking, you want to make sure if your blog is about a trending topic, a news event, or breakingnews, that it gets scanned first. You can help this happen by integrating the most obvious key wordsin your title so your blog gets scanned by Google and other search engine bots.

Finally, an important reason to give some thought to use of key words within your Blog title is this.If you have any type of monetization on your blog, such as Google's Ad Sense, the key words youuse will trigger specific related topic ads to appear on your site. This is beneficial to you, as ads thatappear on your blog are more closely matched to your Ad Sense ads which offers you somewhat ofan advantage for potential earning through clicks on the ads that appear on your blog.

Convey what your Blog is about with a smart title.

In your Blog title, say exactly what your content is in an enticing way. If you can find a clever wayto shock, or make someone take notice within your Blog title, do so. For example, offer 7 Tips, or 10Strategies, or 10 Ways to Drop 10 Pounds. This style of titling is a good way to convey that your

Strong: The TOP 10 BEST Hotels in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan Weak: Going to Moose Jaw,Saskatchewan? Here's our picks for the best hotels.

    Example 4

Strong: 5 Strategies That Will Triple Your Sales Today! Weak: Looking for ways to increase yoursales? We have what you need to know.

The two secrets to power writing -- reciting, rewriting.

    by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

I've been a published writer and author for six decades now. I've got 18 books and thousands ofarticles under my belt. As a result people are constantly asking me the "secrets" of writing thatresonates, captures readers and gets your message delivered. Alright, you've asked me quiteenough... I'm ready to spill the beans...

Power writing Solution #1: Recite what you write.

When was the last time you needed to write something with real impact? Something that made yourpoint, hammered it home, and did so in the most clear lucid way?

The correct answer is that the "last time" you did it was probably today, what with all the letters, advertisements, posters, reports, etc. you've got to write in your business.

Is this how you approached the task?

    1) Bad attitude. You hate writing, or at least your're doing a mighty good imitation of someone who

does. Thus, you grumpily sit down at your computer, hold your nose, and resolve to race throughthis unwelcome task in record time.

    2) The writing you produce under this "system" is just about as bad as bad writing can be. As aresult it's wordy, misspelled, redundant, diffuse... and that';s just for openers.

    3) Yuck! When you see what you've got, you gulp. It's terrible, but fortunately not so terrible thatother terrible writers and readers will ever notice. Declining standards shroud any number ofproblems...

Then take a good look in the mirror. Remember when you were young, idealistic in college, and thatsmarty-pants professor said you were either part of the problem... or part of the solution. Now you

finally know what he meant: you can either keep producing the writing that has brought you so littlefame and fortune... or you can apply Solution #1 to the problem.

    To excite, recite.

When was the last time you wrote something, then read it aloud to yourself to see how it soundedand maybe to tweak it?

Answer? Well, let's just put it this way, shall we? When was the last time you read anything you'dwritten aloud? Wasn't it that time in Third Grade where you been forced by Mrs. Noroski, thepersonification of evil, to read a poem she coerced you to write in the first place? Thus, recitingtakes its place just before having a root canal. And nothing's going to change your mind, so there.

Methinks the lady (and the gent, too) doth protest too much.

Now hear this: you begged me for my secrets to power writing... and here's one of the two mostimportant. You're just going to have move on, relegating that fiasco that constituted your one andonly poetry reading to the recycle bin where it will surely find the oblivion which it so dearly merits.

The absolute necessity to read your prose... if you care that it gets read.

It's time for brutal honesty. You write to be read, to influence, to motivate readers to take action.Reading aloud, reciting, helps you achieve this objective... and you'll do it (stinker though it may be)because recitation means results... and improving results is what it takes to excel and prosper in our

    33/37

    strenuous culture.

First, BIG relief item. There's an audience of just one to these academy award winningperformances: you! And unless you're the culprit, no one need ever know that you do this wheneveryou want the best possible content and the best possible content presentation.

Here's what needs to be in your kit for this project: a printer, marking pens, and a surface on whichto spread this masterpiece in process. Now add gumption and you're ready to go...

You're looking for errors. Here are some places you'll find them:

    1) Line length. Good writers, that is to say persuasive writers know that less is more. Thus, thelonger the sentence, the more likely the reader misses the point, and this will never do. If you findyourself taking another breath to get through the sentence in question, that sentence is too long. Theoptimum line length is 10-15 words, and you must cut sharply as a result... and so keep yourreaders.

    2) Do the same severe pruning with your paragraphs. Short paragraphs are the best paragraphs; theyshould run from 6 to 8 lines.

    3) Start as many sentences as possible with "you" (explicit or implicit). Whatever you write is

written for just one person -- the "you" who is your present reader. That person must have yourcomplete and total focus, because if that "you" stops reading, it doesn't matter what your message is,this all-important person isn't going to do anything about it.

    4) Use action verbs. Here's the drill you want every reader to follow: your prose calls for action...your prose gets the reader to act. But this only happens when you take a machete to your passiveverbs. They are torpid... impenetrable... movement killers. Just the way they should be and remainforever -- that is if you want your prose cited in the "Guinness Book of Records" under the category"execrable".

    5) Make war on all purple passages. These you can easily spot when reading for, when uttering themyou automatically start talking like the divine Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923), which means in thesententious idiom of late 19th century France!

Your language should be clean, simple, efficient -- you know, the way it isn't now.

    Solution # 2. Rewrite.

Wow, after scrutinizing your latest effusion per Solution #1, you're surrounded by items that havebeen ruthlessly removed. What now? Simple; my next sure-fire writing insight, viz. that the mosteffective writers are the most conscientious rewriters. In other words, the ones who do not merelyspew words on the page, but who do what's necessary for maximum impact. This means you.

And so today, at first light, take your latest writing project and go out into the pristine dew of day to

recite it. Sure your neighbors will deduce that you have finally gone mad... but the many newprospects and customers you'll derive will leave them happy... leave you a paragon of prose... andricher.; oh, yes, a very great deal richer.
