Importing an entire course into a new (empty) course: Please note Import is not an option, IF courses are located on different servers. Also course settings and block configuration are not copied by this method. Settings must be configured manually by the user in the Destination course aka new course. For example, course availability, theme, number of weeks/topics, etc. Blocks can be repositioned manually as needed with the move icon.

In this example, we will import Fall 2012 PHYS_100_01_19245 into Spring 2013 PHYS 100-01 12346. Fall 2012 PHYS_100_01_19245 is the course that has the content we want to copy so we will refer to it as the “source course”. Spring 2013 PHYS 100-01 12346 is the course that needs the content so we will refer to it as the “destination course”.

1) Prepare the Destination (blank) course for the Import by editing the settings in the Destination course to match those in the Source course. To change the settings, click the “Edit Settings” link located in the Settings block. Save your changes.

a. It is essential to change the number of weeks/topics to match the original source course. For example, our Fall 2012 PHYS_100_01_19245 is set to 17 weeks. We need to change the number of weeks/topics in the Destination course, Spring 2013 PHYS 100-01 12346 to match it.

b. Change any other settings that differ between source and destination courses, for example: format, theme, course start date, and availability. If you forget, these can also be changed after the import.

2) Go to the Settings block in the Destination course, for example, Spring 2013 PHYS 100-01 12346, click Import. A screen listing your courses will display.

3) Locate your course on the list or use the Search box to find it. Click the radio button by the Source course name to select it, for example, Fall 2012 PHYS_100_01_19245. Click “Continue.”

4) The Initial Settings page displays. Click “Next.”

5) The Schema Settings page displays listing all the course content from the Source course. a. Uncheck the News Forum. b. If there are any content items, you do not wish to import, uncheck them. c. Click “Next” – located at the bottom of the page.

6) The Confirmation and Review page displays. Green checkmarks appear by all items that will

be imported and red checkmarks by any excluded items. If satisfied, click “Perform Import” located at the bottom of the page. If you wish to edit your choices, click “Previous.”

7) A page displays with the message. “Import Complete. Click the Continue button and review/revise your course as necessary, including repositioning blocks if needed.

IMPORTANT: If you notice “Orphaned activities” at the bottom, go to Edit Settings and increase the number of weeks/topics to match the source course. This will resolve the issue.

Importing select course content into another course (e.g. only quizzes): The import feature can also be used to copy specific course content from one course into another course. In this example, we will copy quizzes from a course named “source course” into a course named “destination course”. Before importing content from one course into another, make sure to un-hide any items that you wish to be unhidden after the copy process. If you have hidden entire topics make sure to unhide the topic or all the items in the topic will be hidden in the destination course. When we look at the Source course it has a topic named “Quizzes” with 3 quizzes (Topic 2).

When we look at the destination course, it has an empty topic named “Quizzes” (Topic 2).

Tips: 1. Content from the source course will be copied into the same topic position in the

destination course. For example, if the content resides in Topic 2 in the source course, it will be copied into Topic 2 in the destination courses – whether or not Topic 2 is empty.

2. If the source course has more topics than the destination course, be sure that you change the number of topics in the destination course to match the number in the source course, BEFORE importing the content or the content may not be copied into the intended location. For example, if the content resides in Topic 14 in the source course, and the destination course only has 10 topics (default for new courses), the content will be “orphaned.” The instructor will then need to edit the number of topics in the destination course after the import and drag and drop the content into the desired location.

3) For most copy processes, including this one, only “Include activities” needs to be selected. De-select “Include blocks” and “Include filters” and click the “Next” button. **Exception: IF you are using this method to copy the course into a currently blank course, leave all three items selected (checked).

A list of the source course’s activities and resources will be displayed.

4) De-select the items you do not want to import. In this example, we have un-selected everything except the quizzes. Clearing the check-box for a topic removes the all the activities and resources in the topic (those check boxes will be greyed out). After selecting which items to copy, click the “Next” button at the bottom right of the page. Tip: Be sure to uncheck News Forum in all cases as the destination course will have its own News Forum.
