HOW TO GUIDE FOR MAKING WHEELCHAIR/WALKER BAGSSabrina Ankney2014
STEP ONE: GATHER SUPPLIES Ironing board Fabric Iron Straight pins Ruler Scissors Sewing machine Thread Material for straps
WHAT TO DO IF YOU DON’T HAVE AN IRONING BOARD? I personally do not own an ironing board, but
I use a towel to protect the carpet from the heat.
STEP TWO: IRONING YOUR FABRIC Lay out your piece of fabric. I used about a
square foot of fabric for each bag. Iron your entire piece of fabric.
STEP THREE: BEGIN PINNING Flip your piece of fabric over so that the good
side is facing down. Gather your straight pins.
STEP FOUR: PINNING EDGES Fold your fabric back ½ inch and pin. Verify
that you have pinned back ½ inch with a ruler. Note: Once you make a few bags, you will be
able to tell by sight where to fold back to. Continue to pin across the entire side of the
bag.
STEP FIVE: IRON Iron the pinned section to flatten, and make
it easier to sew.
STEP SIX: PINNING THE OTHER SIDE Rotate bag 180 degrees and pin the other
side the same as in steps four and five.
STEP SEVEN: PREPARING TO SEW Make sure that your machine is threaded
properly, and that the thread are hanging back behind the presser foot.
STEP EIGHT: BEGINNING TO SEW Put fabric underneath the presser foot and
gently lower the presser foot. While holding the thread behind the presser foot, slowly hand wheel the needle into the fabric.
STEP NINE: REVERSE STITCHING Once the needle is in the fabric, make five or
so stiches. Then reverse your sewing to reinforce the stitch. I usually go back and forth twice before continuing to sew the rest of the way.
STEP TEN: SEWING Once you have reinforced the edge, sew
across until you reach the other edge and then reinforce that edge in the same fashion.
STEP ELEVEN: REPEAT Once done, cut thread. Repeat prior steps
other side of bag.
STEP TWELVE: PREPARING TO SEW SIDES Fold the fabric in half so that the good sides
are together.
STEP THIRTEEN: IRON & PIN Iron and pin to sew.
STEP FOURTEEN: SEW SIDES Sew both sides the same as the hem on the
top. Once you have completed the sewing, turn the bag right side out and make sure the corners are nice and clean. Iron and prepare to attach handles.
STEP FIFTEEN: ATTACHING STRAPS Make sure that you only have one side of the
fabric. Cut a four equal lengths of the material you are using as straps.
STEP SIXTEEN: COMPLETING BAG Attach the strap to the bag with a pin. Sew
forward and backward several times to reinforce. Repeat with the remaining three straps. Trim threads and your bag is complete
