How to download and install Garmin MapSource and Map Updater
DISCLAIMER:
This following information was copied from the following link:
http://gl1800riders.com/forums/showthread.php?348779-Use-Mapsource-with-your-Zumo-(450-500-
550-660-and-665)
It is being reproduced here with some modification. This article assumes that your Garmin ZUMO has
the LIFETIME MAPS option. If not, then you may have to purchase the latest map version from Garmin.
Believe it or not, contrary to what you might read on the internet, you CAN use MapSource to create
routes and load them to your Zumo instead of using BaseCamp. I just got a new Zumo 660 LM (Lifetime
Maps) and the thought of using Garmin BaseCamp was depressing. After a call to Garmin and talking to
Nick in their technical support group, he walked me through a few steps which I will share with you.
First, with the new Zumo's, the maps are pre loaded to the unit (in my case, the 2014 maps). The trick is
how to get those maps onto my PC (Windows 7) without paying for a disc which will be outdated in a
few months. If you have Lifetime Maps, this process is fairly painless if you follow a few simple steps.
Plug your Garmin ZUMO into your PC before proceeding with the following instructions.
HOG NOTE: I already had Garmin BaseCamp installed. So some Garmin directories already existed. I
installed the map to the following link on my Windows 7 PC: C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps
HOG NOTE: MapSource will not install unless a previous version of MapSource or Garmin BaseCamp is
already installed. BaseCamp can be downloaded and installed at the following link:
http://www.garmin.com/en-US/shop/downloads/basecamp
NOTE: Microsoft .Net framework is required before this will work. If you don't have it installed on your
XP/Win7/8 machine, it will prompt you to install it. Wait for that to complete (a restart may be required)
before continuing on.
Note: DO NOT disconnect your ZUMO until everything is done. Depending on your internet connection,
this could take several hours.
