How to create Festive Background for Valentines Day with AbstractHearts in Photoshop CS5

In this tutorial I will give you some tips on how to create Festive Background for Valentines Day withAbstract Hearts in Photoshop CS5. You will learn how to add a Layer Style, draw hearts with Pen Tool,apply brushes etc. Layered PSD file included. So lets get started!

Start working by creating a new document (Ctrl+N) inAdobe Photoshop CS5with the size1920pxby1200px(RGB color mode) at a resolution of72 pixels/inch. Click onAdd a layer style icon from bottom part of theLayers panel and selectGradient Overlay.

Click in thecolor bar to open theGradient Editor and set thecolor stopsas shown. Click OKto close theGradient Editor dialog box.

Weve got the next background:

Next create a new layer and choose aHard Rpundbrush fromBrush Tool (B).

Use this brush to represent many small circles of#F00202color. Apply the brush with a differentBrush SizeanddifferentOpacityvalue.

Then start drawing the heart shape, choose thePen Tool (P), set thedrawing modeonShape Layers inOptions bar and draw the next shape as shown.

Click onAdd a layer style icon from bottom part of theLayers panel and selectGradient Overlay.

Click in thecolor bar to open theGradient Editor and set thecolor stopsas shown. Click OKto close theGradient Editor dialog box.

Weve got the next heart:

Make a copy of the last made layer and remove theGradient Overlaystyle from the copy. Choose thePathSelection Tool (A) to select the path as shown.

PressAlt+SHIFT and use the right arrow on the keyboard to displace a little the path copy.

Select the path using thePath Selection Tool (A) and use theFree Transform (Ctrl+T) command to make itsmaller.

SelectSubtract from shape area fromOptions bar. This way well cut the middle part of the heart shape.

Then change the layers color on the white one.

Insert the mask on the same layer by choosingAdd layer mask on the bottom part of theLayers panel andchoose theSoft Round brush ofblack color.

Use this brush to paint in the mask to hide the next zones on the layer exactly the same way from below.

Create a new layer and choose theSoft Roundbrush applied before to paint on the hearts surface. The brushscolor is#50404.

Hold downAlt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) and click between the brushs layer and the layer containingthe hearts in theLayers panel to create aclipping mask.

Make one more copy of the very first hearts layer and remove theGradient Overlaystyle from the copy. UsingtheFree Transform (Ctrl+T) command, we can move the copys layer on the same place from below.

Insert the mask on the layer by choosingAdd layer mask on the bottom part of theLayers panel and choosetheSoft Round brush ofblack color.

Paint in the mask using this brush to hide the next zones on the heart as it is shown below.
