Have you ever thought of joining a country club?
Or are you currently at a club and considering a
change? With the current state of the economy, many
clubs are offering discounted pricing on memberships and
often waiving initiation fees, bonds, and other attached fees inorder to increase membership. This puts YOU in the drivers
seat! However, before you rush out and throw your hard-
earned money, there a few things you should consider.
FIRST, THINK ABOUT WHO YOU ARE. Are you single, have a
partner, married, or have children? This should affect your
decisions on what amenities you will be looking for in a club.
Singles may be looking for just golf and lunch, while couples
might want mixed golf/tennis events and a good social atmo-
sphere, and those with children ma y be looking for multiple
sporting activities and options for camps or lessons. You want
to try to match your lifestyle with the atmosphere and ameni-ties of your new club.
SECOND, THINK ABOUT WHERE YOU LIVE AND WORK. How
far are you willing to travel to participate in your recreation,
leisure, and social pursuits? This will help you find potential
clubs within your target area. Make a small map and think
about how different clubs locations may affect your schedule.
Those who have more time on their hands or strongly value
their leisure and social activities are more likely to travel
further to pursue them. Where as a family looking for a s
club may want the facility to be very close to home.
THIRD, THINK ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU ARE WILLING TO
SPEND. In these tough economic times it is important to fthe club that will give you the most for your dollar. Club
with multiple amenities and leisure activities allow for mo
fun in one location. Look for clubs that have not only gol
swimming, tennis, fitness facilities, dining, and social fun
tions. This year in particular, search for clubs that have lo
no initiation fees and no yearly assessments. These will h
your budget and keep you away from binding agreements
attention to extra costs that come along with membersh
and be sure to understand how you will be billed.
FINALLY, THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT. By culminatin
answers to these questions you will begin to understand wyou want out of your new club. Shop around and check
what different clubs in your area offer. In some cases the
will allow you to tour the facility, play the golf course, or
the grounds, so do not hesitate to ask. Try to talk to a me
to get a feel for the culture, atmosphere, and demographic
the membership. Right now is a great time to find fantast
deals at some of the finest courses in the area!

HOW-TO
CHOOSE
According to the International Car Wash
Association (ICA), regular professional
washing and waxing will help maintainyour cars appearance as well as its value.
WHY CHOOSE A PROFESSIONAL CAR WASH?
Most car owners understand the value of changingmotor oil regularly to protect the engine, explains
Mark Thorsby, executive director of ICA. But if they
forget and instead choose to replace the engine, thecar could still be as good as new. However, a car with
oxidized paint and a rusted-out body can never be eco-nomically restored. The best prevention is regular wash-
ing and waxing at a professional car wash.
The protective clear acrylic finish on your car is only
2 mils thick, about the same thickness of a plastic trashbag. This finish will erode over time due to the effects of
sunlight, UV rays, acid rain, salt, dirt and air pollution.
If you live in an environmentally protected area, a pro-fessional car wash facility is recommended. They use
biodegradable cleaning solutions, far less water that do-
it-yourselfers, and dispose of the wasted water accord-ing to strict federal and state environmental regulations.
WHEN IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TIME TO WASH
YOUR CAR?
The most important times to wash your cars finish a
after exposure to acid rain and road salt. After the w
evaporates, the acid and salt remain on the finish andwill begin to erode it. In the winter months, as
temperatures rise and fall below freezing and salt ha
been applied to the roads, you will need to wash you
car more frequently.
WHY IS AN UNDERCARRIAGE TREATMENT
IMPORTANT?
The under carriage treatment will help to protect it fr
rust and body rot, especially in the wheel wells, doo
sill areas and bumpers.
WHY WAX?Most car wash facilities also offer a waxing or
polishing service. The polish will help to protect the
cars finish as well as improving the overall look of
your vehicle. Theres nothing better than that shiny
showroom look of a car.

The biggest myth about custom built cabinets and

pricing can go from affordable to astronomical, anyone
looking for custom built cabinets can get what they want
without busting the bank.
Kitchen cabinets, living room bookcases, or a bath vanity:
whatever the use, cabinets should give a lifetime of enjoy-

They may not fit right or operate properly.
Custom built cabinets can match the right cabinets to your life-

Custom built cabinets let you add your personal touch.

very important when ordering custom kitchen cabinets.
The key to cabinets that will provide years of proper operation
is careful design. Professional design is critical in the installa-
tion and use of cabinets, whether its a custom-designed bar or
a set of kitchen cabinets. Both demand a trained designer.
Cabinet-makers build custom cabinetry to specifications
provided by an architect, kitchen designer, interior designer,
contractor or homeowner. A variety of wood species and
laminates are generally used with custom cabinetry offering
selection of finishes. Keep in mind that a cabinet-makers
specialty is carpentry. He can assist you with the design and

If ceramic tile is your preference theres a number of
considerations, such as: choosing consistently-sized
tiles. Ceramic tile is fired in a kiln and cooled at
varying temperatures and humidity levels. Expansio

HOW-TO
CHOOSE An MRI Center
What is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the Body?Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses radio frequency wavesand a strong magnetic fi eld rather than x-rays to provide clear anddetailed pictures of internal organs and tissues. The technique hasproven very valuable for the diagnosis of a broad range of pathologicconditions in all parts of the body, including cancer, heart and vasculardis-ease, stroke, and joint and musculoskeletal disorders. MRI requires
specialized equipment and expertise and allows evaluation of somebody structures that may not be as visible with other imaging methods.
What are some common uses of the procedure?Because MRI can give such clear pictures of soft-tissue structuresnear and around bones, it is the most sensitive exam for spinal andjoint problems. MRI is widely used to diagnose sports-related injuries, especially those affecting the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, and wrist. Theimages allow the physician to see even very small tears and injuries toligaments and muscles.
In addition, MRI of the heart, aorta, and blood vessels is a fast, noninvasive tool for diagnosing heart problems. Physicians canexamine the size and thickness of the chambers of the heart,
and determine the extent of damage caused by a heart attack orprogressive heart disease. Organs of the chest and abdomenincluding the lungs, liver, kidney, spleen, pancreas, and abdominalvessels can also be examined in high detail with MRI, enablingthe diagnosis and evaluation of tumors and functional disorders.MRI is growing in popularity as an alternative to traditional x-raymammography in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Because noradiation exposure is involved, MRI is often the preferred diagnostictool for examination of the male and female reproductive systems, pelvis and hips, and the bladder.
How should I prepare for the procedure?Because the strong magnetic fi eld used for MRI will pull on anyferromagnetic metal object implanted in the body, MRI staff will ask
whether you have a prosthetic hip, heart pacemaker (or artifi cial heartvalve), implanted port (brand names Port-o-cath, Infusaport, Life port),intrauterine device (IUD), or any metal plates, pins, screws, or surgicalstaples in your body. In most cases, surgical staples, plates, pins andscrews pose no risk during MRI if they have been in place for morethan four to six weeks. Tattoos and permanent eyeliner may also createa problem you will be asked if you have ever had a bullet or shrapnelin your body, or ever worked with metal. If there is any question ofmetal fragments, you may be asked to have an x-ray that will detectany such metal objects. Tooth fi llings usually are not affected by themagnetic fi eld, but they may distort images of the facial area or brain,so the radiologist should be aware of them. The same is true of braces, which may make it hard to tune the MRI unit to your body. You will
be asked to remove anything that might degrade MRI images of thehead, including hairpins, jewelry, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and anyremovable dental work. The radiologist or technologist may ask aboutdrug allergies and whether head surgery has been done in the past. Ifyou might be pregnant, this should be mentioned. Some patients whoundergo MRI in an enclosed unit may feel confi ned or claustrophobic. Ifyou are not easily reassured, a sedative may be administered.
What does the equipment lookalike? The conventional MRI unit is a closed cylindrical magnet in which thepatient must lie totally still for several seconds at a time.
How does the procedure work?MRI is a unique imaging method because, unlike the usual radiographs
(x-rays), radioisotope studies, and even Computed Tomography(CT) scanning, it does not rely on ionizing radiation. Instead, radiofrequency waves are directed at protons, the nuclei of hydrogen atoms,
in a strong magnetic fi eld. The protons are fi rst excited and therelaxed, emitting radio signals, which can be computer-processto form animage. In the body, protons are most abundant in thehydrogen atoms of water the H of H2O so that an MRI imshows differences in the water content and distribution in varioustissues. Even different types of tissue within the same organ, sucthe gray and white matter of the brain, can easily be distinguishe
Typically an MRI examination consists of two to six imaging seqeach lasting two to 15 minutes. Each sequence has its own degof contrast and shows a cross-section of the body in one of seveplanes (right to left, front to back, upper to lower).
How is the procedure performed? The patient is placed on a sliding table and positioned comfortabthem RI examination. Then the radiologist and technologist leaveroom and the individual MRI sequences are performed. The patiable to communicate with the radiologist or technologist at any tiusing an intercom. Also, many MRI centers allow a friend or, if cis being examined, a parent, to stay in the room. Depending on many images are needed, the exam will generally take from 15 tminutes, although a very detailed study may take longer. You wi
asked not to move during the actual imaging process, but betwesequences some movement is allowed. Patients are generally reto remain still for only a few seconds to a few minutes at a time.Depending on the part of the ode being examined, a contrast mamay be used to enhance the visibility of certain tissues or bloodvessels. A small needle connected to an intravenous line is placean arm or hand vein. A saline solution will drip through the intravline to prevent clotting until the contrast material is injected abouthirds of the way through the exam. When the exam is over the is asked to wait until the images are examined to determine if mimages are needed. A radiologist experienced in MRI will analyzimages and send a report with his or her interpretation tot he patpersonal physician. This should take only a few days or less.
What will I experience during the procedure?MRI causes no pain, but some patients can fi nd it uncomfortableremain still during the examination. Others experience a sense obeing closed in. You may notice a warm feeling in the area undexamination; this is normal, but if it bothers you the radiologist otechnologist should be notifi ed. A contrast injection is needed, thmay be discomfort at the injection site, and you may have a coosensation at the site during the injection. Most bothersome to mapatients are the loud tapping or knocking noises heard at certainphases of imaging. Earplugs may help.
Who interprets the results and how do I get them?A radiologist, who is a physician experienced in MRI and other
radiology examinations, will analyze the images and send a signreport with his or her interpretation to the patients personal physThe patient receives MRI results from the referring physician whordered the test. New technology also allows for distribution ofdiagnostic reports and referral images over the Internet at manyfacilities.
What are the limitations of MRI of the body?Bone is better imaged by conventional x-rays in some cases, anis preferred for patients with severe bleeding. MRI may not alwadistinguish between tumor tissue and edema fluid. In most casesexamination is safe for patients with metal implants, with the excof a few types of implants, so patients should inform the technician implant prior to the test. The examination must be used cautiearly pregnancy. MRI typically costs more than CT scanning.

Have you ever walked into a restaurant and immediatelyrelaxed? Maybe youve been to a party that, for somereason, never really took off? Believe it or not, lighting
has a major effect on moodjust think how cranky peopleare in the rain. You can help your home reach its aesthetic
potential by choosing the correct light fixtures, and types ofbulbs.Kitchen: a lot of time is spent working in the kitchen.Lights can keep the mood up. Under cabinet lighting adds abeautiful, warm touch. It also helps keep your workspace safe(think: using a knife). Even better, it will make your countertop sparkle, giving your kitchen a pristine appearance. If youhave an island or peninsula, why not add some pendant lightsover it? They hang straight down on thin strings and light upthe area, making it the perfect place to have a snack and reada paper. Overhead, recessed lighting will do the trick. Mostkitchens should use halogen recessed bulbs for this, due to thenatural coloring it produces.
Living room: again, youll want recessed lighting (also calledcans or high hats) here. Halogens will do well. Althoughthey dont light a wide area, their light is bright and natural. This keeps the living room cheerful. Make sure you have adimmer put in, too so you can turn the lights down (but notoff!!!) during scary movies. If you find you have darkenedcorners, add a lamp on a corner table. Use an incandescentbulb for a cozy yellow glow.
Dining room: a chandelier is the classic element here. Go forgood ole incandescent bulbs. A dining dimmer is essential, so
you dont feel like your in an interrogation. People sit clotogether and chew food in dining rooms. Thats why manrestaurants are dimly lit--halogens have no place here. Adimmer also helps set the mood during candlelit dinners..white crackled-glass wall sconce.
Bedroom: high hats, of course, are the choice here, too. Han electrician add a two way switch, so you can turn themoff from your bedside, and near the doorway. The type ofbulb you want depends on ceiling height. An elevated ceiwould require a halogen bulb. The extra height will allowtheir circle of light to spread farther, too. It gives the roomwonderful, winter-sun type of light. If your ceilings are loyou should go incandescent. While theyre okay in a livinroom, you dont want dark corners in your bedroom. For decorative touch, add wall sconces to either side of the beLeaves more room on your end table for books or whatnoand it looks so much richer than a bedside lamp.Bathroom: too many people throw one light in the middl
of the ceiling and call it a day. We do our most personal adetailed grooming in the bathroom, yet this room is mostignored. Vanity lighting aids in brushing teeth, putting onmake up, and shaving. But one light over the mirror is a hmistake. It leaves a dreadful shadow casting down, one thwill have you jumping back in bed at the sight of your owreflection. A better option is lighting on either side of themirror. It casts light more evenly, and in a kinder light!

One of the most important parts of daily life is your
vehicle. It gets you to work or school, to the gro-
cery store, the bank and back home. When theres
a problem with it, you want to make sure that the people
who fix it know what they are doing. Read on to learn
how to pick an auto repair shop.
1. GET REFERRALS FROM FAMILY, FRIENDS AND
CO-WORKERS. Check the local Better Business Bureau
for information on complaints filed, how many (if any)
and the shops record of resolving problems.
2.VISIT THE SHOP. Observe the cleanliness, lighting, orga-
nization and the condition of the equipment.
3.INVESTIGATE THE MECHANICS CERTIFICATION. Ask if
they are certified and in what area. Mechanics maybe certified by a car manufacturer or a general orga-
nization such as the National Institute for Automotive
Service Excellence (ASE). Look for a mechanic with
valid credentials, proper training and experience work-
ing on your car model. Know if they are qualified to
do different types of services such as electrical and
brake systems. Some auto repair workers are only
qualified to do oil changes.
4. INQUIRE ABOUT THE TYPES OF CUSTOMER SERVICE B
EFITS THE SHOP PROVIDES. Some may offer rental c
onsite, loaner cars or a shuttle to and from work w
your car is being repaired. Ask if they have evenin
and weekend hours.
5. PICK A REPAIR SHOP AUTHORIZED TO PERFORM REP
UNDER YOUR WARRANTY, IF YOUR CAR HAS ONE.
6.ESTABLISH A WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE REP
SHOP. THE BEST TIME TO PICK A SHOP IS BEFORE YO
NEED ONE. Preventive maintenance is less costly th
repairing a major malfunction. Start with somethin
small like an oil change or a check-up on one of
your cars systems. Some shops offer free brake
checks or free air conditioning system checks.
7.COMPARE PRICING FOR GENERAL SERVICES SUCH AS
BRAKES, AIR CONDITIONING CHECKS AND TUNE-UPS.
These fees can vary widely, but they will give you
idea of whether the shop youre considering falls i
the average price range. Consider chains as well as
independently owned shops. Request references fr

Here are some tips for picking the perfect home away
from home...
Ask your neighbors, veterinarian or pet groomer for
suggestions.
Visit a few kennels and check to make sure that they
are clean and that the pets there are being well cared
for. Are the living areas clean? Does the pet have a area
to exercise and how much time do they spend in that
area? Is there fresh water in the bowl for them? What
kind of interaction is there between the care taker and
the pet?
Follow up with an unannounced visit to the kennel.
Make sure that the pets are warm at night and dont
have to sleep on concrete, especially the smaller and
older pets.
Do they provide separate areas for cats to play in?
What type of procedures are in place in case of an
emergency?
If you can, board your pet overnight before goinga lengthy trip and see how the pet reacts to the

Most schools of music operate on the philosophy
that the study of music is a lifelong endeavor,
something that will enrich your life by giving
you an understanding of music and the ability to play an
instrument. Some schools are geared only to children or
adults; some have programs for both.
DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT FROM A MUSIC SCHOOL.
What is your aim? If the pupil is a child, what do you
want him or her to gain from the lessons? Do you want
to expand the childs horizons, deepen his appreciation
of music, focus on a particular instrument, or to approach
the lessons as merely an after school activity. Is the atmo-
sphere of the school casual and supportive, or academic
and competitive.
ASK FRIENDS OR LOOK IN LOCAL NEWSPAPERS FOR
NAMES OF MUSIC SCHOOLS. Call and ask for a brochureoutlining their offerings, their primary focus and their
philosophy.
INQUIRE ABOUT THE CLASSES. Are they individual or
group lessons? If group, how big are the classes? Group
classes for music instruction are most effective when class
sizes are relatively small. Hearing the sounds of music
being played all around and being around others who
learning can really inspire and motivate a student.
MAKE SURE YOU INQUIRE ABOUT THE COST OF THE
SONS OR PROGRAMS. Fees are generally charged eith
by the hour or half hour. Find out if the child must supthe instrument or if he can rent it. Also inquire about t
cost of used instruments which are often offered at mu
schools. Ask if they have a flexible payment plan.
ASK ABOUT THE TEACHERS. Not every great musicia

to teaching as a profession, not just to make some extr
money on the side.
DO THEY OFFER ANY TYPE OF PERFORMANCES FOR
STUDENTS?Are there any special costs associated wit
these performances? Where are they held?FINALLY, VISIT THE SCHOOL. Observe the teaching m
ods. Watch to see how the students are handled. Are t
enjoying their lessons? Does the school offer advance

you chose a pharmacy for your medication needs. Your
pharmacist is a very important part of your health care
team and should be chosen carefully. In between doctor vis-

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A PHARMACIST:
Does the pharmacist take time to answer your questions in a
manner that you understand?
Does the pharmacist tell you about each new medication and
explain such things as how and when to take the medication
and what you can and cannot take with it?
Does the pharmacist have any special training in disease
management, such as a certified asthma counselor?
Does the pharmacist show concern for you and your
family?
Does the pharmacist recommend vitamins or supplements
to take or tell you which ones you should NOT take with
your prescriptions?
Is the pharmacist easy to talk to, yet shows concern and is
able to explain what you need to know as a consumer of
both prescription medications and

Crooked and crowded teeth are difficult to clean and
maintain. This may contribute to conditions that cause
not only tooth decay, but also eventually gum disease
and tooth loss, according to Dr.. Sarkis Euksuzian, who has
offices in Medford and Moorestown.
Dr.. Sarkis Euksuzian specializes in gentle and comfortable
orthodontic procedures that avoid headgear and, where possi-
ble, the extraction of permanent teeth. Euksuzian Orthodontics

including: clear ceramic brackets, heat-activated archwires,
clear removable appliances (Invisalign) as well as colorful ties
that express your individuality, specialized educational soft-

Other orthodontic problems can cause abnormal wear of tooth
surfaces, excessive stress on supporting bone and gum tissue,

BRUSHING AND FLOSSING: Food particles and plaque natural-
ly accumulate on the teeth and on braces. This process could
lead to tooth decay and/or gum disease. Proper oral hygiene
is vital to prevent these problems from occurring during your
orthodontic treatment. The extra effort you give to keep your
teeth, braces and gums clean and healthy will result in a much
better orthodontic outcome.

Many considerations should come into play when
trying to make the choice as to where youwant to dine for an evening. Following are a
few thoughts you might ask yourself before doing so.
These tips will save you time, money, and increase thechances that your experience will be one that will giveyou pleasure and, perhaps, youll remember forever.
Go by what is familiar! If theres a restaurant you
normally frequent, why change a good thing? Insteadof ordering the same steak you normally eat, try
something different and ask your sever what heor she likes. Remember, theyve most likely eaten
everything on the menu and will know whats good.
Ask yourself what food you are in the mood for.
This will help narrow down your options significant-ly. Now, if nobody knows what they want and cant
decide, choose a restaurant with an extensive menu.
Visit the restaurant between 4pm and 6pm, especiallyon Friday and Saturday nights. If you decide upon an
early or late lunch, you can also avoid busy crowdsand a long wait to be seated.
You will save much frustration and anxiety if you
choose your destination before heading out. Driviaround to select a restaurant is never a good idea,
unless of course, you enjoy traffic! Also, think ab
what kind of experience you want to have; if youwant a romantic dinner for two, dont go to a famstyle restaurant; if you have the kids with you, ch
ing a romantic restaurant just wont work!
Consider ordering food to go if its the restaurantfood that you crave and not necessarily the restau
experience. For the budget-minded this can also you money. By taking the sit-down experience ou
of the equation, you can skip the drink order entirand also avoid having to pay a tipa savings of
percent by itself.
POINTS TO CONSIDER Always keep in mind that restaurant
reviewers are human.
Restaurant dining should be an immenselypleasurable experience.
When choosing a restaurant ask a friend
for a recommendation.

When you move to a new town, or decide you
need a dental exam after years with no check-

there are many dentists in every large city, and several
in each small town, some have undesirable character-istics. Choosing a dentist could mean the difference
between healthy gums and rotting teeth. Some dentists
use old fashioned techniques, while others are on the
cutting edge of technology. For example, there are den-
tists who still use mercury in their fillings. There are
other holistic dentists, however, that have eliminated
heavy metals from their fillings entirely. Use this article
to help you choose the right dentist to fit your lifestyle.
1. CALL YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY AND ASK IF YOU HAVE
A PARTICULAR NETWORK OF DENTISTS YOU MUST SEE
FOR BETTER BENEFITS. You can find the phone num-ber on the back of your insurance card. Many times
you receive better benefits if you stay within a certain
network. If you travel outside of that network, you
may not even be covered. Always check before you
set up any sort of dental appointment.
2. ASK COWORKERS, FRIENDS, AND NEIGHBORS IF THEY
CAN RECOMMEND ANY PARTICULAR DENTIST. Coworkers
are great because they typically have the same dental
insurance as you. People are always willing to giv
their negative opinions. Positive thoughts, howev
are harder to come by. If someone says anything
positive about their dentist, that doctor might be a
good choice.3. CALL A COUPLE OFFICES AND ASK WHAT DAYS THEY
HAVE AVAILABLE FOR APPOINTMENTS. Depending o
your schedule, one dentist may work when anothe
wont work at all. For example, some clinics are
closed on Fridays or Mondays. If you have a part
lar day during the week that works for exams, ma
sure they have that time available. Also, you wan
be sure you can get an appointment on fairly shor
notice.
4. CHOOSE ONE OF THE DENTISTS AND HAVE YOUR SEM

A Remodeler/Builder
Your home is likely your biggest asset, so find-
ing a good builder/remodeler for renovation or
construction projects is important. Good builders/
remodelers possess several qualities: they are com-municative and listen to your needs and wants for your
home. They have a targeted plan for completing the
project and provide an estimate upfront. They have a
good reputation within the building community and
have a proven track record of good-quality construc-
tion. Most importantly, they are licensed and insured
in your jurisdiction. Finding a good builder with all of
these qualities can be time-consuming, but it is well
worth the effort.
Taking on a home building or remodeling project is a
huge decision. You dont want to use just anybody, or
you risk wasting your hard-earned money. Even though
you are not buying a product, the contractors services
you choose are going to determine the quality of the
finished product (your remodeling). It is important to
hire a professional and to take a few basic steps listed
below to ensure you hire the right home remodeler.
1. LOG ON TO THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HOME
BUILDERS WEBSITE. Click on Find: Builders and
Remodelers and select a directory. There is a
general directory and specialized ones based on the
primary building material, such as concrete or
log cabins.
2.MAKE SURE THE CONTRACTOR HAS A LICENSE. You can
get his license number and check it out yourself to
make sure it is legit. There have been scam artists
who have faked license numbers, so just because a
contractor gives you one doesnt mean it is legal. To
check the license number, go to the website listed at
the bottom of this article and enter the license numberinto the box. Click Search for license and wait for
the results. If your contractor has a valid license, or
if he has had any reports against him, this search will
tell you.
3. ASK FAMILY AND FRIENDS FOR REFERENCES. Note
homes with styles you admire and ask the homeown-
ers who completed the construction.
4. PREPARE A LIST OF INTERVIEW QUESTIONS FOR PRO-
SPECTIVE HOME BUILDERS/REMODELERS. Ask about
insurance and membership in professional tradeorganizations, and request proof of these items.
Inquire about professional background and examples
of work. Talk about whether the builders work i
guaranteed and discuss the terms of the guarantee
Ask for references from past clients, preferably
obtaining contact information for recent and not-
so-recent jobs. The latter helps you determine if tbuilders work has held up.
5. ASK WHETHER THE BUILDER WILL PROVIDE A DETAIL
ESTIMATE THAT INCLUDES TIME AND MATERIALS. As
for, in writing, who is responsibility for work del
or projects that come in over the provided estima
Request that all details, including price and paym
plans, be put in writing.
6. FIND OUT IF THE REMODELER HAS A LARGE ENOUGH
CREW TO WORK ON YOUR JOB. Some contractors o
have two to three helpers, which can make the jo
take twice as long. If you are paying him by the
hour, then you want a large crew.
7. NOTE THE CONTRACTORS ATTITUDE. Is he kind and
concerned with giving you exactly what you wan
is he bold and bossy? Does he offer you helpful
gestions without being demanding or expecting th
you must follow those suggestions? You can tell
lot about a person by his attitude.
8. CHECK OUT THE CONTRACTOR WITH THE BETTER
BUSINESS BUREAU. If there is no information on th
contractor or his company, thats a good thing. Itmeans no one has filed a complaint against him.
however, someone has filed a complaint, you are
going to know about it, and that should help you
make a decision as to which contractors you wan
stay away from.

When the time comes for roof repair or replace-
ment, it is important that you choose a roof
contractor that has the necessary qualifica-
tions to perform the tasks required. When your roof is
damaged or leaking, time is of the essence. However, itis very important to perform your due diligence when
selecting a roof contractor. Once you have determined
the qualifications of potential contractors, youll need to
make an assessment of their reliability, dependability,
and honesty.
FIND AND MAKE A LIST OF PROSPECTIVE ROOF
CONTRACTORS.
Do the telephone work. If you prefer to use a telephone
book, the business section is the place to start looking
for roof contractors. Nowadays, the internet is the tool
most use to start their contractor search. Your local
Better Business Bureau is a great place to start. Another
reliable resource is your local Chamber of Commerce
website.
OBTAIN THE CRITICAL INFORMATION.
You must check the roof contractors licensing and
insurance status in your state or locality. This is a criti-
cal step. Failure to utilize a licensed and insured con-
tractor may leave you legally liable for any accidents
that occur on the job. Its also important to know that
they are qualified to perform the work needing comple-tion. If there is a problem with the work theyve done,
insurance gives you a better chance to get the issues
resolved. For larger jobs, your state or locality may
require the contractor to be bonded.
PERFORM THE BACKGROUND CHECK.
Dont rely on simple testimonials that are written on
their website. A quality roof contractor will give you
reference contacts for prior jobs. A contractor willing
to provide such information moves to the top end of
your list. Call the references. Ask them about the timely
completion of the job, their professionalism, how closethe contractor was to meeting the original estimate, and
anything else that will give you the confidence to select
them for the job.
CONTACT THE PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS SUCH
AS THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU AND CHAMBER OF
COMMERCE FOR COMPLAINT HISTORIES.
GET YOUR ESTIMATES FROM THE CONTRACTORS YOUVE
SELECTED.
All estimates must be in writing. The more detail they
provide, the better. Accept nothing less than a writtenestimate that includes the price, the warranty informa-
tion from both the contractor and manufacturer of mate-
rials, estimated job start and job end dates, and cont
information. Contractors unwilling or unable to sup
you with all of this information in writing should be
removed from your list.
SELECT THE COMPANY FOR THE JOB.
Prepare to monitor their work and safety practices d
ing the job. Dont be afraid to ask questions withou
being too disruptive. The more attentive you are to
work theyre performing, the less likely they will be
take shortcuts resulting in poor workmanship.
GET PERSONAL ONCE YOU HAVE REACHED A DECISION
Verify the prospective contractors business address
telephone number. Ask to see their federal tax ident
fication number, business license (if required in you
state), proof of bonding, liability and workers compensation insurance, and client and credit references
Credentials should be verified.
INQUIRE ABOUT MATERIALS.
Professional roofers should be well versed in the lat
products and materials. Verify the roofers informat
about a particular products durability, appearance a
guarantees.
ASK A PROPERTY MANAGER AT A MAJOR LOCAL REAL
ESTATE FIRM FOR REFERRALS TO ROOFING COMPANIES
Managers know a few top companies that performquality work at reasonable prices. Get the email add
of several property managers in your area and conta
them all separately asking for roofers they use.

purchasing a Water Softener? In a nutshell, look
for equipment that provides efficiency and lon-

in operating costs and greatly reduce the amount of servicework required over the life of the softener.
Softener efficiency is one of the most important aspects to
consider when buying a Water Softener.
SOFTENERS: Be sure to buy a metered or volume regener-
ated softener, as these will operate more efficiently than a
time clock regenerated Softener. The meter or volume regen-
erated units will only regenerate after it softens a pre-set
amount of gallons.
Buying a water softener is an investment. Be sure to pur-
chase your equipment from a reputable Water Treatment
Dealer that carries full lines of quality, serviceable Water
Treatment Products.
WATER FILTERS: Be sure to have your water tested to identi-
fy what specific problems you need to deal with. Most repu-
table dealers will perform basic testing free of charge. Make
sure that the filter selected is sized properly. Also, there are
no Correct all Problems in one filter on the market today.

fied? How much will the unit cost? Be sure to consider f
capacities and suggested maintenance, as these will dicta

How to select a wine is a mystery to many
people. Wine labels are confusing unless you under-
stand a few basics. There are three kinds of wine
labels: varietal, proprietary, and geographic.
VARIETALthe name of the grape is on the label. U.S.law dictates at least 75% of whats on the label has to be
in the bottle. Examples are merlot, cabernet,
chardonnay, reisling, shiraz.
PROPRIETARYWhatever the winemaker wants to call
it. If it says blush, chances are it is a Proprietary label
because there is no grape called blush. Often these are
blends.
GEOGRAPHICthe wine get its name from the region,
village or commune where the grapes grow. Bordeaux is
a region of France.
FINDING THE BEST WINE:
To find the best wine you must put wine in your mouth. Go
to very single tasting you can find. Remember these words:
sniff, sip, swirl, sip and swirl a second time, swish, swallow,
savor. Enjoy. You might ask one of the friendly staff at your
favorite wine shop.
HOW TO CHOOSE SPIRITS:
A good liquor store will have a broad selection of all the
advertised brands as well as private label brands. This m
the buyers have long experience in the business and kno
edge to seek out and stock the best, highly allocated spir
the world has to offer. The store will have bourbons, rums,
scotches, vodkas, gins and whiskey. Proof is 50% of the alc
content. Therefore, 100 proof whiskey is 50% alcohol, cut w
grain neutral spirits or spring water.
BEERS - SPECIALTY AND CRAFT:
Beer is universal. With so many cultures developing thei
own indigenous brewing traditions, recipes and ingredien
its no wonder that the world still offers an incredible an
delightful variety of beers. At last count, there were mor
than 20,000 brands of beer sold around the word, brewed
more than 170 styles.
All malt beverages are rightly referred to as beers, but th
are two distinct types: ales and lager. Until the 1800s all
beers were ales, that is they were brewed with yeasts tha
mented at the top of the fermenting tank. Bottom-fermen
yeasts, discovered around 1830, and advances in refriger
tion made it possible to brew lagers all year round. The s
should provide a broad choice of well-known brands.

Afuneral provides an opportunity for family and friends
to acknowledge their loss, to state the important role
this person had in their life, to recognize the loved
ones contributions and accomplishments and to prepare for
life without the deceased.
For many people, it is a beginning step in the grieving pro-
cess. Experts tell us being able to talk about the life of a
deceased loved one is one of the first steps toward accepting
death. However, making funeral arrangements in a time of
grief can be overwhelming for family members and many
people find the services of a professional funeral home to be
a comfort. The best time to do some research on a funeral
home, is before their services are required.
WHAT SERVICES WILL A FUNERAL HOME
PROVIDE?
Funeral Directors are licensed professionals who are
knowledgeable about state and federal laws. Funeral homes
can help you plan a service that will meet your needs and
guide you through this time of emotional distress. The funeral
director relieves the family of many details. The director
transports the body to the funeral home, arranges for the
wake and gets information to the proper authorities for the
death certificate. The funeral director places obituary notices
in newspapers and helps fill out claim forms for Social
Security survivors benefits, Veterans benefits, and life in
ance. He or she also secures the location for the funeral an
arranges for someone to officiate the service. On the day
the funeral, the director takes care of transportation and o
logistics. The funeral director is also responsible for prepa
the body of the deceased for the service and making certa
that its presentation fulfills the wishes of the family.
QUESTIONS TO ASK THE FUNERAL HOME: 1. Are you an independent funeral home? Independentfuneral homes are locally owned by people who are an
active part of the community.
2. Are your funeral directors fully licensed and do they
have advanced training?
3. Does the funeral home offer opportunities for
pre-arrangement?
4. Does the funeral home honor pre-arrangements from
funeral homes?
5. Is a price list available (including services and
merchandise such as caskets and vaults)?
This should be given to you at no obligation.

CHOOSE A Day Camp
When your kids have graduated the local Day
Care, Rec. Program, or Camp Mom, and
youre looking for the next logical step in
giving a wonderful growth experience away from
gameboys, the internet and TV CAMP is the answer!Every summer over 12 million children attend Day
Camps and Resident Camps across the country!
ACA ACCREDITED:While county and state health departments have guide-
lines for camps, American Camp Association
standards are much stricter, and are ensure the high
quality supervision and facility that most parents want
for their children.
You can find the best camps in the country directly
through the ACA website at www.acacamps.org.
DAY CAMP VS. RESIDENT:Do your children wish to sleep in their own beds,
or away in the mountains in a cabin of new friends?
Resident Camp is the real-deal, but Day Camp is the
logical first step, and many Day Camp programs are
very adept at keeping their older campers through pro-
gressive programming.
LENGTH OF STAY, HOURS OF THE DAY:How many weeks? How many days per week? What
time does it start? When can you drop your kids off?
When can you pick them up? All important
questions. In todays world, families should be able to
get what they need in regards to their specific childcare
needs and session length flexibility.
COST:There are camps available for every budget, but as
we all know - you get what you pay for. Most private
camps offer extensive programs with a mature, expe-
rienced staff, and lots of amenities - but subsequently
come with a heftier price tag. Non-Profit camps(including YMCA-type programs) are less expensive,
offer simpler programming, younger staff, and less ame-
nities, but are certainly an affordable alternative. What
are the discounts offered, what is the refund

primarily middle-school and high school students, that
is something to be concerned about. The best camps
have teachers and college students running their pro-grams with high school students simply assisting.

them in person, for it is their personality and philos
that trickles down to the rest of the camp staff.

instruction? Athletic fields? How extensive is the
arts program - is it popsicle sticks or serious projec

important to most working parents:
Transportation - what are the parameters? Are lun

service and bathing suit laundering!
