Puppy Development and How They Are Raised Here at Coburg Hills Birth to 2 weeks Puppies grow in a warm, stress-free environment (my office) and are handled every day for a few minutes. For the first two weeks of their life they cannot see or hear and need to be kept very warm. Dewclaws are removed in the first few days and sharp nails are trimmed daily. Early neurological stimulation exercises occur during this time and the radio or television is played on a low level. The mother is removed for only a few short periods a day and she is supervised when with the puppies 24/7 (which contributes to a severe lack of sleep on our parts). First worming occurs now with Strongid. In addition, puppies receive a probiotic and vitamins beginning at birth and continuing on until they leave my house. Early Socialization (3-4 weeks) During the day puppies are moved from the warm office, into a large pen area with pine shavings in my main area. Daily handling continues with a variety family/friend visitors. Toys are introduced and household sounds (television, washer/dryer, and dishwasher). We start semi-solid food and remove the mother for periods of time during the day, but she is with the puppies at night. The television is played through out the day as well as movies (Marley and Me is a good one). A variety of dishes are used. Puppies several different dog beds to try. Everything is about variety! Additional worming occurs with Panacur for three days. Grooming continues with daily brushing and nail trimming.

Late Socialization (5-8 weeks) Outside visitors are welcomed during this time. Handling continues from a variety of people and we introduce formal food bowl exercises. Puppies are exposed to a variety of surfaces and toys as well as chew toys. The weaning process is a gradual process and continues during this phase. Crate training also begins and outside play occurs (depending on weather). Car rides as time permits. The first bath occurs as well as an introduction to a dremel for nails. Final worming with Panacur is given and the first vaccination in the puppy’s series as well as our final veterinary health check. Puppies DO NOT leave prior to 8 weeks of age.

Continuing socialization and training is VERY important throughout the puppy’s first year. The puppies have been my priority for 8 weeks and I expect puppy buyers to also have this same dedication (please do not adopt a puppy if you do not have time for it). They are still a blank slate when they come to you and we appreciate your commitment to taking them on from here….
