OPG’s Nuclear Operations

10 nuclear units at three stations Pickering A

• in service: 1971-73• 2 operating units

– 2 others in safe storage • 1,030 MW

Pickering B • in service: 1983-86• 4 units• 2,064 MW

Darlington • in service: 1990-93• 4 units • 3,512 MW

Nuclear = 30% of OPG’s capacity, but 41% of our production (2005)

OPG nuclear delivered almost 30% of Ontario’s electricity (2005)

Ontario’s Supply Outlook

“…the combination of demand growth and generation retirements would create a gap of roughly 24,000 MW by 2025, equivalent to about 80% of Ontario’s current capacity.”

Ontario Power Authority, Supply Mix Advice Report, December 2005

“Ontario needs between 20- and 25,000 MW of new supply and necessary transmission enhancements over the next 20-25 years.”

Dave Goulding, IESO, January 2006

“…250 MW of generation is required within the central Toronto area by the summer of 2008 to adequately address the risk to reliability of an aging transmission infrastructure…Present forecasts indicate that 500 MW of total capacity should be planned for summer, 2010.”
