How Hard Can Listening (Skills) Be?

This is my 20th year in education. I have been a middle school teacher at Hill Country MS in Eanes ISD for 11 years. I’ve coached UIL Listening Skills for six years; I’ve also coached, Ready Writing, Chess, Modern Oratory, and Dictionary Skills (separately) for 14 years and have been a coordinator for 7 years.
● 8th-grade English teacher ● remodeling my house myself for way too long● always on the hunt for the best vegan food ● like hanging out where I can take my dog● spending time with my nieces ● using too much time trying to work my Amazon Echo.
In this session, we will talk about how to
- give your students control
- conduct a test in as little as 22 minutes
- coach your students in note taking
6th grade and 7th/8th are
separate testsBUT!!! I test all of my teams together at the 7th/8th grade level.
~ Help students in grades 5,6,7 and 8 recognize the importance of effective listening skills identify problems they may have in listening effectivelyprovide a challenging format test the improvement of their listening abilities
~ Participants will listen actively to a variety of material learn to analyze evaluate a speaker's message

in ALL classes through the school day!
~ Measure skills such as identifying the main idea supporting ideas, drawing conclusions, distinguishing fact from opinion, mastering other listening and thinking skills
~ Contestants will listen to a scriptseven to ten minutes in length,take notes as neededuse their notes to answer 25 multiple choicetrue/false and short answer test questions
What is Listening Skills?~ A variety of subject matter are used for the tests

There will be times when students miss information. Remind them to start actively listening as quickly as they can. Sometimes what they hear later will help remind them.
