OPENING

Having completed the main product I created a CD cover and magazine album cover to accompany the music video of 1-800 by Logic. The introduction of this aspect brought the different conventions of marketing a product to present themselves, using these conventions correctly is essential to a successful add campaign. The CD cover and advertisement is also important as it could be the first thing the viewer experiences of the artist, song or album; the first impression has a big impact on the products audience. Again, a strong link between all three products is significant as it allows the viewer to easily recognise the singer from the magazine advert or the CD cover from the advert. There were a few ways that I created a link between my products such as running themes, colour schemes, photography, font and same people.

CD COVER

There are several similarities between both my ancillary texts, I have displayed these visually on the next slide but will use this space to talk about the link with my video. The graphic design picks up on the modern sound that the album has, rap albums usually play on any social or political messages put forward by the album and I know from researching the background to the album that the artist was inspired by creating something truly equal and uplifting. Running with this sub text I used graphic design reminiscent of Gustav Klutsis or Alexander Rodchenko who helped to inspire the 1917 Bolshevik revolution, and I think the feel of this design matches the feel of the artists lyrics creating a strong conceptual link. The model that I used in the photography for the design was featured in the video and therefore helps to create a physical link between the video and the CD cover, this could be used further in more advanced marketing strategies.

Model: used throughout both products and is featured in video which helps a link between the main product

Motif: one of the motifs between my products is the white bar at the top and bottom of my graphics which has the name of the artist or album

Production Company: Universal Music Group is credited on both products

Font: called ‘Kachusha’ and fits the modern looking graphic design that is appropriate for the genre rap/pop

Colour scheme: 3 primary block colours that are balanced throughout the design, the black and white contrast each other and the the red makes it look more appealing

Motif: the word everybody is mentioned repeatedly throughout both products as when researching I discovered the artist wanted the album to be something for everyone to enjoy without discrimination.

MAGAZINE ADVERT

The magazine advert uses many of the same links as the CD cover as it uses the same graphic design and photography. However, there was one thing that helped it link to both the CD cover and the music video, just under the title there is text that reads “The new album includes Everybody, 1-800-275-8255 and Confess”, this creates a link between the CD which has the songs written on it, but also with the music video as it is titled 1-800-275-8255 and the title has significance to the storyline.

Title: the title is the largest piece of typography on the advert and being at the top is one of the first things to be seen (before the artist name)

Motif: the album name is repeated throughout both products

Motif: the white bar at the top and bottom of my graphics which has the name of the artist or album is featured in this too

The production studio, Universal Music Group has its logo featured

Some of the big songs are mentioned to help its audience recognise the music, this was done on the back of the CD cover but with all the songs

Social media links embedded, this was not done in the CD cover

OVERALL

I would conclude that my ancillary texts combine effectively with my final product as there are strong conceptual and physical links between all three products. The graphic design for instance captured the modern and uplifting message of the music itself, it also works with the rap/pop genre of the songs which is appropriate and aesthetically pleasing. There is a physical link through the model who appears in the music video and causes some recognition for the audience.

I also believe that my main product and ancillary texts combine well because the overall professional look represents what you would expect to see from a major American rapper.
