How effective is the combination of your main product and
ancillary texts? Victor Nonyane
Introduction Across this page I will aim to illustrate how I
have effectively combined my main media product and the ancillary
texts. I will do this by critically assessing if the mix of my
five-minute film - being my main media product - and my posters and
articles, being the ancillary texts, are a successful combination.
The assessment will include analysing the genre Action thriller and
how it should be conveyed through my main product and ancillary
texts.
PosterFilm posters have various purposes which make them a vital
tool for the success of a film. The main purpose of a film poster
is to advertise and inform the audience of an upcoming film;
through important information suchas release date, actors and
suitability with reference to age (BBFC certification.) Film
postersmergeillustrations, lettering, colouring and a clever layout
to create a 'movie-at-a-glance' image to entice an audience into
seeing the film. They focus on visual elements such as, powerful
photographs and graphics to make posters attention grabbing and
something the audience would want to see. These visual elements can
also give the audience an insight into the themes and genre that
will be portrayed throughout the film. Good examples of film
posters grab attention are for though movie grey, as it had =s the
main character facing you this grab your attention. Shutter island
is another good poster it film scenes on the posters
My Poster For my poster, I found it really effective to start
off with a key shot from our film. This really sets the scene with
our production and it has a dark almost sinister look to it. As the
theme of the film itself, I thought it was key to show this through
the other forms of advertisement such as my magazine cover and
review. With all of these having the same theme creates good
synergy between both my ancillary and production. The poster of my

Review Film reviews of this type present the reader with the latest
news and information about the most recent film releases. These
reviews tend to focus on the most significant aspects of a specific
film. In other words, these reviews tend to note such "important"
information as the stars of the film, the cost of the production
and interesting aspects about the production itself, The primary
purpose of these film reviews is to publicize a film and to
convince readers to go watch it. Reviewers who engage in this type
of reviewing regard themselves as providing a service - certainly
to the studio - and to the reader by functioning as a guide to what
is currently available at their local cinema.For my magazine cover
and review, I first began by comparing other review companies such
as Empire Magazine and Total Film to link the similarities between
them.
My Magazine Review For the review, I tried tokeep to the
conventions byfollowing the actual theme and style of Empire
Magazine, using borders seen in the actual magazine and the logo in
the top right hand corner also as seen in empire. By keeping things
as they are in real life is a key wayto make it look like
aprofessional job and making it authentic. Writing the review
itself was easy, just picking out thekey parts of the film asif I
was areal reviewer and picking out pros and cons just as would be
done.As a finalised product I am happy with what I achieved here
and believe that the synergy between my film and ancillary texts is
good.
