Nobel Laureate in Physics Relates Own Research Experience

Prof. Anthon y J . Leggett , 200 3 Nobe l Laureate in Physics and world authorit y

in th e theor y o f low-temperatur e physics , spoke on 'Superflui d 3-He : The Early Day s as Seen by a Theorist' on 15th April in LT1 o f the Science Centre during a two-day visi t t o Hong Kong .

The lecture was a very personal accoun t of the way in which, in the 12 months between July 197 2 to July 1973 , Prof. Leggett and his research tea m cam e t o a theore t ica l

understanding o f the puzzling experimenta l data on what i s now know n a s superfluid 3-He. He particularly emphasize d the concep t o f ' spontaneous l y b roke n sp in -o rb i t symmetry' whic h turne d ou t t o b e a ke y ingredient i n understandin g th e N M R behaviour.

California at Berkeley, visited the University on 20th and 21st April.

During his stay , Prof. McQuade, who i s also a n English teacher , spok e a t a seminar on 'Raising the Literacy Stakes: Writing Skills and the Demands of the New Economy ' whic h took place i n the Ho Ti m Building . H e als o paid a visit t o a local schoo l whose teachers had joined th e WrIT E Projec t (Writ in g fo r Integrated Teache r Educat io n Project ) conducted b y th e C U H K Facu l t y o f Education. The WrITE Project , an adaptation of the National Writing Projec t o f the US, is based on a 'teache r teachin g teacher' mode l and aims a t creating a professional networ k of outstanding English language teachers and improving Englis h teaching and learning i n Hong Kong .

Footwear Science Explored for Better Health and Comfort

North America, has recently emerged as a new science in Asia. Such a development has been reflected i n greate r concer n f ro m spor t scientists, footwea r manufacturers , an d footwear purchasers in footwear design .

On 14th April, a total of 75 delegates from industry an d academia i n mainlan d China , Japan, Taiwan, an d Hong Kong gathere d i n LT1 o f the Esther Lee Building to exchang e ideas on the research and development of new footwear product s a t a workshop. 「 高 等 教 育 與 中 學 學 制 改 革 和 銜 接 ： 問 題 與 對 策 」 硏 討 會

中大評議會將於六月五日（星期六）上午九時至下午一時，在利黃瑤璧樓三號演講

廳主辦「高等教育與中學學制改革和銜接：問題與對策」研討會，歡迎中大校友及教職

員出席。

研討會由中大教育學院及香港教育研究所協辦，以粵語進行。開幕禮主禮嘉賓為教

育統籌局常任秘書長羅范椒芬女士和金耀基校長。

專題演講由國際著名運動生物力學家、耐克公司研究與開發部前任總

C. F r e d e r i c k 主持，而運動醫學暨促進徤康中心主任陳啟明教授亦在會上

論述「鞋設計和運動醫學」。

敎育改革的 回顧與展望

教育學院、香港教育研究所及香港初等教育

研究學會上月十七日在利黃瑤璧樓舉辦

「二零零四年基礎教育研討會」，探討「教育改

革的回顧與展望」。

主題講者為淡江大學教育學院院長陳伯璋

教授、香港教育學院副校長（學術）陸鴻基教

授和中大教育行政與政策學系曾榮光教授。他

們 的 講 題 分 別 為 「 台 灣 教 育 改 革 的 迷 思 與 省

思」、「教育改革與教師的專業教育」和「香

港特區政府教育改革：全球競爭國家的政策議

論」。

與會的資深教育工作者亦就「小學升中收

生機制改革」、「融合教育的實施與體會」和「學

校自評制度」三方面，闡述他們的體驗。

學生情緖健康調查 醫學院健康教育及促進健康中心上月八日公

布於去年進行的一項有關學童健康問卷調

查 ， 研 究 結 果 顯 示 ， 學 童 在 填 問 卷 前 的 一 年

內 ， 兩 成 九 人 曾 連 續 兩 星 期 都 感 到 傷 心 和 絕

望，當中一成一人的日常活動及社交活動更因

而受影響；而曾認真考慮自殺、曾計劃如何自

殺，以及有多次自殺行為（如割手腕、服食過

量藥物等）的學童分別有一成一、百分之九和

百分之四。

該中心表示，如能提高青少年的生活滿意

指數，或青少年定期運動，都有助減低青少年

的抑鬱及自殺傾向。

這項調查有助了解青少年高危行為的複雜

因果關係，從而幫助從事青少年工作的專業人

士及家庭醫生提高警覺，及早鑑別處於高危狀

態的青少年，防止問題惡化。

李東強墨彩東西展覽 藝術系上月二至十三日在新亞書院

許氏文化館主辦李東強墨彩東西展

覽。

李東強先生一九六六年畢業於中大藝

術系，七一年赴美，先後在愛荷華大學和

紐約布萊特藝術學院攻讀版畫和素描課

程，獲文科碩士及藝術碩士學位，七九年

到英國布賴頓理工學院進修版畫，現為藝

術系兼任講師。他多年來積極創作，曾獲

香港藝術發展局二零零二年視藝獎項。

他的作品以人物為主，融合了中國

書法的線條神髓與西方的素描技巧，寥

寥數筆，便把人物的特質和神韻活現出

分別由香港中國醫學硏究所所長李甯漢教授主講「離島中草藥趣談」，中

醫學院梁頌名教授主講「中藥如何治療血脂過高」，岑澤波教授主講「穴

位按摩消除疲勞」及林志秀教授主講「中醫藥如何減輕鼻敏感及哮喘」。

開幕儀式由副校長楊綱凱教授、衛生署助理署長（中醫藥）陳漢儀醫

生、沙田區議會醫療及衛生服務工作小組召集人方玉輝醫生、中大理學院

副院長關海山教授、中醫中藥研究所管理委員會主席梁秉中教授、香港生

物科技研究院院長何國強教授、綠養坊保健專方董事彭婉明小姐及中醫學

院院長車鎮濤教授主禮。

社工系亦師亦友計劃 社會工作學系畢業同學會與社工系系會今

年繼續合辦「亦師亦友計劃」，由校友協

助在學學生增進對前線社工工作的認識，並分

享工作心得和人生經驗。

該 計 劃 的 開 幕 禮 於 三 月 二 十 八 日 與 社 工

系畢業同學會周年大會同日舉行，約有二十名

校友及五十名社工主修生出席。同學會會長黎

培 榮 認 為 該 計 劃 非 常 有 意 義 ， 最 能 體 現 該 會

「回饋母校」的宗旨，而學弟學妹亦從中得到

實 質 的 支 援 。 程 翠 雲 校 友 表 示 ， 她 在 修 讀 兼

讀 學 士 學 位 課 程 時 乃 至 畢 業 後 ， 仍 有 中 大

「 邊 緣 人 」 的 感 覺 ， 但 參 加 了 亦 師 亦 友 計 劃

後，即確立了自己的「中大人」身分，並希望

學弟學妹能明白「沒有付出，便沒有收穫」的

道理。

該計劃過去兩屆均為期一年，今屆則由四

月開始，至明年底才結束，讓學長與學妹學弟

有充足的時間開展活動。

香港的賽事由本校

地理與資源管理學系、

賽隊伍可以任何與香港

地理環境有關的課題設計海報，但報告內容須有部分來自實地考察結果。

大會藉以加深學生對香港地理環境的認識。

本屆賽事共有三十隊參加，均為中一至中三的學生。他們出席頒獎禮

並介紹其作品，由評判即場選出優勝者。結果由九龍華仁書院囊括冠、

亞、季軍。

校隊蟬聯師生網球賽冠軍 今 屆 師 生 網 球 賽 激 戰 三 小 時 後 ， 由

網球校隊以盤數五比四險勝，蟬

聯冠軍。該隊亦是本屆香港大專網球賽

亞軍得主，賽後由麥繼強教授頒獎。

賽事由體育部主辦，於三月二十二日

在大學體育中心網球場舉行，由現役的中

大網球校隊隊員與教職員代表對壘，採用

九盤五勝制，全部均為雙打賽事。這項比

賽前稱蜆殼盃師生網球賽，自一九七八年

起每年舉辦一次，只曾於去年因非典型肺

炎疫情影響而停辦。

金耀基校長惜別晚宴 金耀基校長將於本年六月底榮休。金敎授自一九七零年加入香港中

文大學服務以來，對大學各方面的發展貢獻至鉅。校方特於六月二十六

日（星期六）晚上七時半假港麗酒店港麗大禮堂舉行晚宴，以惜別金耀

基校長，並感謝他多年來對中大的貢獻。

座，講題為「超流體氦 - 3 ： 一個理論物

理學家的早期經驗」。

學哲學博士學位，現為美國伊利諾大學

香檳城分校 Joh n D . & Ca the r in e T .

M a c A r t h u r講座教授。他是世界知名的

低溫物理學科學家，在超流體理論上有

開創性的貢獻，去年獲頒諾貝爾物理學

獎。他是美國國家科學院及美國藝術與科

學院院士，美國哲學會、英國皇家學會、

美國物理學會及美國物理

研究所會員。

超導理論是二十世紀

物理學的重大突破，具劃

時代的意義。超導現象最

先發現於一九一一年，當

時科學家發現將水銀冷卻

至絕對溫度攝氏 4 . 2 度以

下，水銀的電阻就會完全

消失。Pro f . Legget t 的貢

獻主要是有關氦的一種同

位素（氦 - 3 ) 的超流動性

研究。液態氦有一種奇異

特性：在特定的溫度下，其黏性會完全

消失，並表現出超流動性。雖然科學家

觀察到液氦的超流動性，但未能解釋個

中原因。 P r o f . L e g g e t t 最先發現氦 - 3的

原子對與超導體中金屬的電子對的結構

相似，並從根本上解釋了氦原子是如何

進入超流這種有序狀態。他的理論不但

能解釋多種超流體的特性，並適用於粒

子物理和宇宙學等領域。

Prof. L e g g e t t 是應香港中文大學、

香港科技大學及香港大學的邀請，來港

訪問兩天，除主持講座外，並與本地物

學家會晤。他此行獲裘槎基金會贊助。

該院今年共有七十一名本科生、三

十六名工商管理碩士生及行政人員工商

管理碩士生獲頒授 B e t a Gamm a Sigm a

香港中文大學分會會員資格。香港中文

大學司庫陸觀豪先生及香港中華煤氣有

限公司常務董事陳永堅先生獲頒授榮譽

會員殊榮，以表揚他們傑出的商業成就

和領導才能。

中大推廣食療本草獲獎 本校的「食療本草」攤位，獲得「香

港花卉展覽」的最佳展品獎。

該展覽一年一度，由康樂及文化事務

署主辦。今年於三月上旬在維多利亞公

園舉行，本校中醫中藥研究所、中醫學

院 及 物 業 管 理 處 園 藝 組 合 作 參 展 ， 以

「食療本草」為主題，

展 出 近 百 種 可 供 食 用

的 中 草 藥 ， 包 括 霸 王

花 、 粉 葛 、 枸 杞 子 、

白 茅 根 、 油 甘 子 及 薑

等 ， 讓 市 民 認 識 ， 這

些 中 草 藥 只 要 經 適 當

的 配 伍 並 調 校 劑 量 ，

便 可 服 用 以 達 至 保 健

或療病的功效。
