How Do Solar Panels Work?By Cindy Grigg

Many homes today use solar panels to make electricity. Some cars are powered by solar panels. Spacecraft use solar panels for energy. How do solar panels work?

A solar panel is made up of many small solar cells. Each cell uses light energy from the sun to make electricity. When you turn on a light switch, electrons move through the electric cord and light up the bulb. (Electrons are small parts of atoms that have negative electrical charges.) That flow of electrons is electricity.

Solar cells use light to make electrons move. Solar cells have two layers stuck together. The first layer has many electrons. It has a negative electrical charge. The second layer has some electrons taken away. It has a positive electrical charge. It is ready to receive more electrons.

When sunlight hits an electron in the first layer, it jumps to the second layer. That electron makes another electron move, which makes another electron move, and so on.The light starts the movement of electrons from one layer to the other. The flow of electricity that results can be used right then or stored in a battery for later use.

Solar energy is a renewable energy source. Solar energy is not perfect, though. The panels must be installed where sunlight can reach them for many hours each day. Panels must be able to stand up to the weather. Heat, cold, wind, rain, and hail can damage the panels. The panels are expensive but not very efficient. Hopefully, inventors will be able to find new and better ways to harness the power of the sun. Then solar power may become cheaper and more practical in the future.

Harry TrumanBy Meg Leonard

Harry Truman was our thirty-third president. He became president when Franklin Roosevelt died. Truman was Roosevelt's third vice president during his four terms in office. Truman was born in Missouri in 1884. He was a farmer for twelve years. He served in World War I. He was elected to the Senate in 1934. Truman had to make some tough decisions as president. He decided to drop atomic bombs on Japan. The day after the second bomb was dropped, Japan asked for peace. World War II was over. Truman was there when the United Nations formed. This group hoped to maintain peace in the world. Truman carried on many things that Roosevelt started. He had a new plan for the country called the Fair Deal. Truman was elected to his own term in 1948. During the second term, the country entered the Korean War. He chose not to run for another term. In 1953, Truman retired to Missouri. He died in 1972.

Playing at a ClipBy Beth Beutler

Donald sighed. He was getting bored. He'd been hanging around in Mom's office for an hour now. He had a half day of school, and his mom still had to work a full day. So during her lunch hour, she ran to the school to get him and brought him back to her office.

At first, Donald colored on scrap paper. Then, he helped Mom by putting some labels on envelopes. That had taken about 30 minutes. After that, Mom had said, "Sweetie, I have to go to a meeting down the hall. Will you be able to occupy yourself here for a little while?"

"Sure, Mom. I'll figure out something."

Mom gave him a peck on the top of the head, grabbed a file folder, and headed out the door.

Donald sighed again and pulled out the drawer under the main surface of Mom's desk. He found a box of paper clips. Absentmindedly,he began to attach the paper clips together into a long string. Before long, he had a long chain and decided to measure it. He looked around the office and found a yard stick tucked by the back of a four-drawer file cabinet. Laying the chain out alongside the yard stick, he discovered that it was over four feet long!

Donald began to use his imagination. He pretended he was a hero in medieval times who had been imprisoned for defending his king. Invaders had attacked his country and he fought back, but they overcame him. He used the paper clip chain to attach himself to his mother's office chair.

A few minutes later, Mom returned to her office.

"How was your meeting, Mom?" Donald asked.

"Boring," Mom said with a grin. "What've you been doing?" she asked.

"I'm a strong warrior who has been subdued by the enemy. They have chained me to this chair, but I will escape!" Don raised his right arm up sharply, breaking the paper clip chain.

Mom giggled. "You had more fun than I did. How about if I make a necklace?"

Mom began to put paper clips together to form a necklace and began to share with Donald.

"Did you know you are not the first person to use paper clips in support of a king?" Mom asked.

"Really?" replied Donald.

"Yes," Mom answered. "During World War II, the Nazis invaded Norway. The people were not allowed to show loyalty to their king by wearing buttons with his initials. So instead, they came up with the idea of wearing paper clips. This showed their stand against the occupation and loyalty to their own king."

"How about that?" Donald replied. "And I thought paper clips were just for clipping sheets of paper together."

"Well, that is their primary purpose," Mom added. "Originally, people would use ribbon through small holes in the paper to attach sheets together. This was done as far back as the 13th century. Several hundred years later in 1899, a Norwegian inventor named Johan Vaaler received the patent for the paper clip."

"How do you know this stuff, Mom?"

"We had a trivia contest in our office this summer, and one of the questions was about the history of the paper

Thomas Jefferson: A Man of BooksBy Kathleen W. Redman

Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States. He was born on April 13, 1743, in Virginia. He loved to learn. He loved to read. He spent his lifetime collecting books. He learned about science. He read about religion and philosophy. He learned to speak other languages. He was a great writer, too. He was one of the writers of the Declaration of Independence.

Jefferson was the third of ten children in his family. He started school in 1752. He started studying Latin, Greek, and French when he was nine years old. He learned to ride horses and learned to study nature. From all his studies,he learned to love reading.

Jefferson went to study at the College of William and Mary when he was sixteen years old. He worked hard. He studied many subjects. His love of reading helped him graduate from college with honors. He became a lawyer in 1767.

Soon after, Jefferson started work on Monticello. This mansion was his home for the rest of his life. It still stands today near Charlottesville, Virginia. He worked to fill his mansion with books. His jobs and world travels allowed him to collect many books. He saw books as a key to knowledge.

"I cannot live without books," Jefferson once said.

By the early 1800s, he had collected more than six thousand books. His collection is an important part of American history. In 1815, he sold his books to the Library of Congress for nearly twenty-four thousand dollars.

Jefferson's studies helped him become one of America's greatest presidents. He was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence. His powerful writing helped shape America.

Jefferson had many jobs. He served as the governor of Virginia. He was the minister to France. He was a surveyor, too. He used his jobs as a way to encourage others to read. He wanted everyone to read and learn.

Jefferson believed that everyone should be able to get an education. Only very rich people could go to college then. Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. It was a public college. The people of Virginia paid taxes to support the school.

Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, fifty years after signing the Declaration of Independence.

Neighbors Living Near a Nuclear Power PlantBy Jennifer Kenny

Bob and Jill are next-door neighbors in New York. One evening, Jill was walking outside and ran into Bob.

"Hi, Jill," Bob said. "How are things?"

"Fine, Bob," Jill answered. "How are you?"

"I'm fine," Bob responded. "Where are you off to?"

"You don't really want to know, Bob," Jill said. "We've had this conversation before."

"Don't tell me you are headed to the meeting about the nuclear power plant. I told you it's perfectly safe," Bob said.

"Bob," Jill asked, "why do you think it's so safe?"

Bob answered, "The energy that is generated is efficient. Nuclear reactors need little fuel. The waste produced is so much smaller than that at a coal-burning plant. The chance of getting sick from a nuclear power plant accident is a lot less than from dying of a respiratory illness caused by a coal burning plant. Nuclear power plants don't produce carbon dioxide, so they do not add to the greenhouse effect or cause acid rain."

"I know you keep telling me that," Jill said. "However, even though the cost is low in terms of fuel, it is very expensive because the radioactive waste must be stored, containment is expensive, and emergency costs add up. In fact, I heard that the wastes must be stored permanently for millions of years. Is that true?"

"Yes, it is," said Bob. "Nuclear waste needs to be contained until it loses its radioactivity. I wish, though, that you could appreciate the incredible process at a nuclear power plant. A pound of uranium that could power an aircraft carrier could make enough energy equal to a million gallons of gas. That uranium bundle in a nuclear reactor acts as an incredible source of heat. The plant itself is so clean. The steel and concrete containment vessel really does protect us from any leaks."

Jill said, "I can appreciate the science behind it. However, I am concerned about the what-ifs. What if there were a terrorist attack?"

"I know that's a concern since September 11th. Of course, the thought creeps into everyone's heads. There are so many new safeguards in place, though. Many things would have to go wrong - one thing after another. In the event that something went wrong, there's an evacuation plan," Bob said.

"Yes," Jill agreed, "but how could that really work? The plan calls for the evacuation of everyone in a ten mile radius. These roads are filled during rush hour. How could we possibly get out of here? What about my children at school? How would I get to them?"

Bob interrupted, "They do practice exercises all the time. France uses nuclear power to generate 75% of its electricity. Right here, Indian Point supplies power to millions of homes."

"Yes," Jill agreed. "However, twenty million people live within 50 miles of Indian Point. It's only 35 miles from New York City. A core meltdown could cause thousands or millions of deaths. Even the owners admit it would take almost ten hours to evacuate just the ten miles around it. Could you imagine what the damage to lives and the economy would be?"

"I just don't agree with those fears, though," Bob said.

"I know you don't, Bill," Jill said. "However, I'm just not as comfortable with this kind of plant as you are, so I am going to the meeting to listen and learn."

North vs. South: Strengths and WeaknessesBy Cathy Pearl

When the Civil War started, both sides thought that the war would be over soon. Both sides thought that they would win easily. They also thought they were fighting the war for the right reasons. The Union planned an aggressive attack against the South. The North wanted to go to war to save the Union. At first, ending slavery was not a goal of the war.

People in the South felt they were fighting to save their way of life. They felt that they were fighting to gain their freedom. They compared the war to the Revolutionary War.

Both sides had strengths and weaknesses. The South had one big advantage. Soldiers knew the forests well. They knew the best places to hide. It is easier to defend land that a person knows well. The trees also helped to protect Southern soldiers when the Union army invaded.

Another advantage the South had was that many men had grown up around guns and horses. They knew how to hunt and live off the land. This helped them adjust to being soldiers. They were comfortable firing guns and knew how to handle them.

Many of the best military leaders were in the South. During the war Lincoln had trouble finding generals that could match the skill that those in the South had. Robert E. Lee had a tough time deciding which side to fight for. Lincoln asked him to command the Union army. Lee was from Virginia. When Virginia seceded, he chose his home state over the Union. He became the commander of the Confederate army in the South.

There were also things that put the South at a disadvantage. One of the main weaknesses was their economy. They did not have factories like those in the North. They could not quickly make guns and other supplies that were needed. The South's lack of a railroad system was another weakness. There weren't a lot of railroads in the South. Also, many of the tracks did not connect to each other. The tracks went between two points and stopped. This made it hard to move troops and supplies.

The North had both strengths and weaknesses, too. There were a lot more free people living in the North than there were in the South. This meant there were a lot more men who could serve in the army. These extra people could also grow more food and work in the factories.

When the war started, ninety percent of goods made in the U.S. were made in the North. After the war started, factories quickly started to make bullets, guns, uniforms, and other supplies that an army needed.

The North had an easier time getting supplies to its army. The railroads in the North were much better. Seventy percent of all the rail lines were there. This made it much easier to move people and supplies where they were needed.

When the war first started, some people were worried about Abraham Lincoln. They wondered what kind of leader he would be. He did not have lot of experience in anything that had to do with the military. In the end, Lincoln turned out to be very good. He was a strong leader for the North.

The North had several big weaknesses. The men in the Union army would be invading a part of the country that they were not familiar with. They would not be defending their own homes like the army in the South.

It would be harder to supply the Union troops as they got farther and farther away from home. This long distance would make it easier for Southern troops to stop supplies from getting to the Union army.

Both sides were sure that their strengths and advantages would help them quickly end the war. The first battle, the Battle of Bull Run, showed that this would not be true. The war would be long and deadly for many of the soldiers fighting in it.

Aachoo!By Erin Horner

It started as a tickle. Try as I might I could not get the wriggly feeling in my nose to go away. I tried to stop it. I tried to be quiet. But before I knew it a huge "A-a-a-achoo!" escaped. I sneezed. Why do we sneeze? Sneezing is a reflex. It is our body's way of helping to protect our nose and our lungs. Sometimes little pieces of dirt or dust sneak up into our nose. When the nerves in your nose notice these tiny intruders they send your brain a message. Your brain then sends a message to your spinal cord and then on to the muscles in your belly and diaphragm. Then your midsection muscles and lungs team up to rid your nose of these pesky particles. When your muscles contract, a huge blast of air comes shooting out of your nose. This is a sneeze. All of this air helps to blow the dirt, dust, or irritants out. When you sneeze, it is polite to say "Excuse me" to those around you. But maybe we should also say "thank you" to our body for ridding our nose of those tricky trespassers.
