Thatis,weneedtobeginwithsomecontemplativepractice.Wegoinwardtodeepenourprayerlife,our knowledge of scripture, our self-awareness,alltocultivateourconnectiontoGod.There’sareasonJesussendsthedisciplesoutortellsthemtheywillmeethimontheroad.WegoouttoextendourselvesasinstrumentsofGod’swilltochangetheworld.Weparticipate inGod’smakingtheworldright.Finally,wegotogether.Christianityisalwaysaboutcommunion.WegrowasweareabletoseethefaceoftheLordinoneanother’sfaces.Thisworkshopwillexplorethesethreemovementsandengageindiscussionabouthowweasfollowersof Jesus can embrace these in our personaljourneys aswell as our corporate journey as aChurch.The formatwill be presentation, smallgroup,anddiscussion.

Jesus in India PM Since2005,theEpiscopalDioceseofWNChasbeeninacompaniondioceserelationshipwiththeDioceseofDurgapur,WestBengal,India,justnorthandnorthwestofCalcutta.WhathasthisgottodowithJesus?HowmightyourworshippingcommunitybenefitfrombeingengagedwiththisChristiancommunity?Doyoufeelcalledtolearnmoreandatthesametimeexperiencetheunknown,thefarawayandthedifferent?Comeandsee!ThissessionwillgiveyouanopportunitytohearfrompeoplewhohavebeentoIndia,whohaveworshippedwithourcompanions,andwhoseliveshavebeenchangedthroughtheexperience.Thenexttripwillbein2016.The Rev. Dr.ElizabethColtonwillconducttwoseparatebutrelatedworkshopson“Religion&thePoliticsofGlobalImages.”Theroleofreligionontheworldstage,theimagesofparticularreligions,andthelinkedrolesofpoliticsandthenewsmediainpresenting,manipulating,distorting,andperpetuatingimagesandideasofreligionwillallbeexamined.Ineachworkshoptheroleofpersonalfaithinnewsanddiplomacywillbeconsidered.Thesetwoworkshopsaredesignedtoflowtogetherbutalsoeachstandsonitsowninlookingatreligionandworldaffairstoday.Participantsarewelcometosignupforbothoronlyone.

Themorningworkshopon“ReligioninWorldNews”will focusoncurrentissuesinwhichreligion(orthenameofreligion)isviewedasthesubjectofthenews,oftenblamedasthesourceofinternationalconflict.ThisfirstworkshopwilllookatthewayssuchnewsstoriesarecoveredgloballyandintheU.S.mediaandwilllookatobstaclestoreportingnewsofreligion.AM

Theafternoonworkshopon“Religion&WorldDiplomacy”willfocusonthemanywaysinwhichreligionispartofinternationaldiplomacyintoday’sworld.Thisworkshopwillconsiderdiplomaticinitiatives,includingnotonlyofficial-formaldiplomacybutalsocitizen-localdiplomacyinresolvingreligiousconflictandpromotingfreedomofreligionasabasichumanright.PM

Singing the Lord’s Song in Creole and Spanish: Mission & Ministry in Haiti, CubaAM

Haiti andCubaaregeographically veryclose to theUnitedStatesbut in theirFrenchCreoleandSpanishCaribbeanculturestheyrepresentexpressionsofbeingtheChurchthatareverydifferentfromtheirNorthAmericanneighbors.ThechurchesinbothofthesecountrieshavebenefitedfromcompanionrelationshipswiththeWNCDiocese.HighlandsFriendsofHaiti(HFOH)isaministryoftheChurchoftheIncarnation.Since2001theyhavesupportedHaitiansworkingtoimprovethelivesoftheirpeopleintheCentralPlateauthrougheducationandagriculturalprojects.WorkshopleaderswillsharetheirexperiencesinmissionandministryinHaitiandCubaandhelpparticipantsdiscoverhowtheymightbecalledtohelp.

The Rev. Dr. Brent NorrishasbeenrectorofSt.Mary’sChurchinAshevillesince2005.HehasservedontheDioceseCommissiononLiturgyandMusic,StandingCommittee,andiscurrentlytheDiocesanEcumenicalOfficer.SincehiscollegedayswhenheservedasavolunteerinmissioninHaitiBrenthashadanabidinginterestandconnectiontotheChurchintheCaribbean.HehasbeenpartofcompanionrelationshipsinHaiti,theDominicanRepublic,HondurasandmostrecentlyinCuba.

Jane ChalkerhasledgroupstoHaitimanytimesayearsince2001.SheisaDistinguishedCom-municantoftheDiocese,hasservedontheFoundationBoardandhasservedasJr.andSr.WardenatChurchoftheIncarnationinHighlands.

Allofushavebeenbombarded,especiallyrecently,withthedifferencesbetweenreligions--howourtradition(s)ofChristianitydifferfromotherformsoffaith,especially,perhaps,Islam.Historically,Chris-tianity,Islam,Judaism,Hinduism,andBuddhismactuallyhaveevenmoreincommon,itmightbe,thanthatwhichseparatesthem.Thiscoursefocusesonwhatallofthesefaithsshare--notwhat,sadly,sooftentearsthemapart.

Stephen Wilkersonhasspentmostofhisprofessionalcareerasaphysician.Beforeenteringmedicine,hereceivedaPh.D.fromDukeUniversityinhistory.MorerecentlyhecompletedaPh.D.programinmythologicalstudiesatPacificaGraduateInstitute,whichincludedacarefulstudyoftheworld’sreligions.

GaryinitiallyattendedaCongregationalVitalityTraintheTrainerworkshopintheDioceseofSeattle.Hewasa30+yearUnitedStatesNavalOfficerwhoalsoearnedanMBAinnegotiationandconflictmanagementandacertificateinOrganizationalLeadership.GaryistheRectoratAll Saints,Gastonia, andhas served theresincemid-2012.

The Rev. Chris Beebe is co-chairof Congregational Vitality Ministry inthe Diocese ofWesternNorth Carolina.She became involved in congregationaldevelopmentasalaypersoninthe1990s,andhasstudiedattheKaleidoscopeInstituteintheDioceseofLosAngelesand theCollege forCongregationalDevelopmentintheDioceseofOlympia.ChrishasbeenRectorofSt.Francis,Rutherfordton,sinceJune,2011.

The Healing Power of Restorative Justice AM

Restorative Justice principles are consistentwith the Christian mission to reconcilepeoplewithoneanother.Whileourcriminaljusticesystemisoftencalled“thebestintheworld,”manywouldagreeitcouldbebetter.DiscoverhowRestorativeJustice,anapproachtocrimethataddressestheneedsofthevictims,theoffendersandthecommunity.Itcanassistvictimsinhealing,toholdoffendersaccountableandofferthemawaytorepairasmuchaspossiblethedamagetheyhavecaused.

M. Jean Parks, Ph.D., isapsychologistandpastoralcounselor inprivatepractice inAsheville,NC. She became involved inRestorative Justicewhen she tried to havea victim-offender dialogue with the manconvictedofmurderinghersister.

Dismantling RacismALLDAY

Thisworkshophasbeencarefullydesignedtoexploreandhelpustalkaboutadifficultsubject.Members of theDiocesan Commission toDismantleRacismwillsharepersonalstoriesof how they have beenwounded by racismandhowtheyarehealing.Theywilltalkaboutpeopleandeventsthattaughtthemaboutraceandaboutbeingdifferent.Throughinteractiveexercises participantswill uncover personalbiasesandstereotypesandlearnhowracismisstructured.Theywillexploretheimpactofbiasesandthemeaningofwhiteprivilege.Theworkshopwilloffertake-homeresources.Thisfull-dayworkshopisrequiredforallworkers,leaders and clergy in the diocese every fiveyears.(AM&PM)
