What is Décodex? The Décodex is a tool that helps check the informaon circulang on the Internet and nd the rumors, exaggeraons or deformaons. Décodex is made of four main elements: A web browser extension which signals in real me whether a website is rather reliable or if it regularly disseminates false informaon; A search engine on Le Monde’s website to check the reliability of a website; A Facebook bot with which users can talk to in the Facebook chat window or the Messenger applicaon. The robot will help to verify the informaon; Pedagogical arcles, especially for teachers, where users can nd ps to dierenate between informaon and a source of informaon, ps for verifying informaon, images or videos that circulate on the Internet, etc. How does Décodex work? Décodex contains approximately 600 informaon websites in its database. The tool can give three types of warning: How can Décodex contribute to media literacy? In a context where ‘fake news’ are becoming more and more common, Décodex is designed to help user understand who is sharing the informaon they read. Décodex is meant as a tool to give the means for all users to be aware of the type of website they are browsing: a news website, a parodic one, or a misleading one held by a militant group. One of the objecve is to parcipate in naonal educaon eort to give students the keys to a crical and distanced reading of what is daily published on television or social networks. To do so, pedagogical sheets have been created, explaining the importance to check an informaon before sharing, the way to judge the reliability of a website, etc. In addion, journalists from Le Monde have oered to intervene in classrooms based on these sheets, to explain their job in order to demys fy a profession that is so visible and so lile known. This website relays a signicant number of fake facts and/or misleading arcles. Stay aware, and cross check with more reliable sources . If possible, go back to the primary sources.
