    Housekeeping

    Although microorganisms are normal contaminants of walls, oors, and othersurfaces, these environmental surfaces rarely are associated with transmission

    of infections to patients or personnel. Therefore, extraordinary attempts todisinfect or sterilize these environmental surfaces are rarely indicated.However, routine cleaning and removal of soil are recommended. The actualphysical removal of microorganisms by scrubbing is very important.

    Note. Areas that are not covered under contractor services must adhere to thesame cleaning standards as specied in this section.

    Staf

    Handwashing. Hands are washed before and after patient contactand after cleaning each area.

    !mployee Health. !mployees having signs or symptoms of activeinfections "i.e., s#in lesions, diarrhea, respiratory tract infections$,must report to their supervisor, who will determine appropriateaction. !mployees with active infections should not have directcontact with patients.

    %ta& will routinely practice '(niversal)%tandard *recautions+ onall patients.

    -arrier *recautions. All patients admitted to or treated at

    NA/!01!N and its constituent clinics shall be assumed to carrypotential pathogens, which are transmitted by blood and body uids.Therefore, all patients are on '(niversal)%tandard *recautions+regardless of the patients2 diagnosis. House#eeping personnel willwear gloves routinely for touching blood, body uids, or handlingitems, or cleaning surfaces soiled with blood and body uids.

    Guidelines

    Hospital grade disinfectant detergent registered by the !*A andapproved by the 3nfection 1ontrol 1ommittee will be used forenvironmental surface cleaning.

    1leaning schedules and methods vary according to the area of thehospital, type of surface to be cleaned, and the amount and type ofsoil present.

    Horizontal surfaces "i.e., bedside tables, ooring$ in patient care

    areas are cleaned on a daily basis, when soiling or spills occur, andwhen a patient is discharged.

    1leaning of walls, blinds, and curtains is done on a routine basisand if they are visibly soiled. -edside, privacy curtains will bechanged after discharge of patients who have been in any type ofisolation precautions. Nursing will notify House#eeping of thisnecessity when patient is discharged from the room. 3t will be the

    responsibility of Nursing to ta#e down the soiled)torn)or contaminatedcurtain "in the case of isolation d)c$ while noting the curtain sizelocated on the vertical strip at the edge of the curtain. The curtain isplaced in a blue plastic %oiled 4inen bag by itself and then ta#en tothe large dirty linen cart located in the 0irty)%oiled (tility room.Nursing should call H5 for a replacement curtain, giving them the taginformation obtained from the soiled curtain. H5 sta& will see that areplacement curtain is brought to the ward)clinic for Nursing sta& tohang. -edside)privacy curtains will be routinely changed out per theHouse#eeping rotation schedule which will be no less than annually.

    The following steps are to be performed daily in the care and cleaning ofhouse#eeping e;uipment.

    ash down cart using a cloth dampened with disinfectant solution.

    Ta#e a dry cloth and wipe cart until dry. This process will preventrusting.

    Hand buc#ets and mop buc#ets

    (sing a cloth dampened with a disinfectant solution wipe theinside and outside.

    0ry each, using a dry cloth and return to the cart.

    /op wringers

    >ash thoroughly using a cloth dampened with disinfectantsolution.

    ash mop and caddy with disinfectant solution.

    >ipe the caddy dry and place in the cart.

    %;ueeze as much water as possible out of the mop and place inplastic bag to be removed for cleaning.

    The bu&er should be thoroughly cleaned and polished and the endof each day. The electric cord is washed and dried with a dry cloth.>heels are also cleaned and oiled and then stored in thehouse#eeping storeroom for the next day.
