Automatic dishwashers are here to stay. Considering that over 50% of Canadian households use automatic dishwashers they pose a significant burden on the environment. They consume energy and surge more that 35 million kilograms of automatic dish washing detergent into the Canadian water systems annually.

Automatic dish washing products must replace the mechanical action of rubbing when you wash dishes by hand. The ingredients must dissolve food particles but not leave streaking on glassware and cutlery. It must not foam or produce suds as this results in the "breaking' of the seal around the door and a lot of bubbles in your kitchen. It must also perform to the expected standards of consumers or they will not use it no matter how environmentally responsible the product is.

Unfortunately, we also know that some of the most environmentally damaging ingredients may be found in these products including NTA, phosphates, and Quaternium Ammonia. (see reverse for impact on environment)

After years of customer requests, CAERAN took up the challenge. To us, it was more important to help you make a better choice and reduce the impact of automatic dish washing soaps on the environment than to ignore the subject all together.

Two kinds of Sweat Glands:It is not the sweat that causes odour but the bacteria that grows in it. The average adult has about two million sweat glands that fall into two categories. The Eccrine sweat glands cover most of the body and are responsible for body temperature regulation and eliminating some of the body's waste. The sweat from these glands is about 98% water plus sodium chloride (table) and other inorganic salts. This "environment" makes it unappealing for bacteria to grow.

The Apocrine sweat glands are located mostly in the armpits, breast, anal and genital area. These glands do not become active until puberty and are controlled by the body's hormone system. Composed of 98-99% water, it is the other ingredients (ammonia, proteins, fats and other organic components), which provide the perfect home for bacteria to grow. Eccrine sweat glands are therefore responsible for perspiration and apocrine for body odour. Regular bathing with soap and water is the first line of defence. Fresh clothing is next.

Essential oils are natural substances that are powerful antiseptics that kill most of the harmful bacteria and fungi without harming the human system. For example, the addition of as little as one drop of sweet orange oil in two ounces of cream will kill all the bacteria and fungi in the preparation. Essential oils have also been shown to be effective in killing the virus that causes Herpes and assist in healing the affected skin.

Recent studies in France determined the potency of essential oils as antiseptics. Increasing amounts of different essential oils were added to meat stock, cultured in raw sewage, to determine the quantity needed to kill all microorganisms. Thyme essential oil topped the list, with only 0.07% per total volume required to eliminate all living organisms from the raw sewage.

Essential oils are not more widely used in household cleaners because of their high price, and the fact that they evaporate when containers are left open.

When CAERAN was developing the stain remover we needed an ingredient that would dissolve tough stains like oils, tars and grease, yet was in keeping with our core mandate. Banana Oil (isomyl acetate) proved so effective, we didn't have to even consider toxic chemicals!

Product Use Ideas:Use in a spray bottle to easily apply to tough stains.

Add an ounce to a white load to keep clothes bright.

Perfect to deodorize diaper pails and to keep diapers fresh and clean.

Use with cold water to remove bloodstains.

Leave an ounce in a small open dish to freshen the air.

Gum? Freeze item, chip the gum away, bring back to room temperature, apply stain remover, rub and wash.

Remove make-up, lipstick, non-permanent inks. Blot away excess several times before final laundering.

For stubborn natural dyes, like mustard, grape juice and cranberry, you may try adding a little table salt.

Can be safely combined with baking soda to eliminate mildew, baby formula stains, perspiration stains etc.

Whether we lounge by the back-yard pool or canoe 20 miles along a pristine river, we all need to remember to protect ourselves from the damaging ultraviolet radiation of the sun.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is part of the sun's spectrum - wave lengths shorter than visible light. Ultraviolet rays are divided into UVA, UVB and UVC ranges. UVB rays are the primary cause of sun burning, premature aging of the skin and the development of skin cancer. UVA rays are more constant year-round and penetrate deeper into the skin's layers; They can be harmful and contribute to burning, premature aging of the skin and the development of certain forms of skin cancer. UVC rays are blocked by the ozone layer and do not reach the earth's surface.

Tanning beds primarily emit UVA rays. This kind of exposure does not show immediate signs of damage but over time, breaks down the skin's collagen and elastin and thereby can accelerate wrinkles, leathery skin and skin cancers.

Tanning Tips:1) Avoid prolonged sun exposure during the most intense sun times of the day2) Use broad rimmed sun hats and cover-ups when outside for extended periods of time.3) Remember the 'Shadow Rule'. If your shadow is longer than you are, it's a good time to play at the beach or poolside. Short shadows mean the sun is at its peak; rays are the strongest.4) Don't forget to protect your eyes with good UV blocking sunglasses.
