Remember mood rings?These were rings that had astone that changed color,

allegedly based on your mood.Most of the original rings camewith a little color chart thatdetailed, with I’m sure great scien-tific accuracy, the meaning of thevarious colors—black was anxious,yellow was stressed, green wasmixed emotions, light blue waslove, dark blue was relaxed, purplewas passionate, and so on.

Every one I ever put on immedi-ately turned black, which demon-strates that they work GREAT.

Now think about it: what is themain question that comes up overand over in any workplace?

That’s right: What kind of moodis the boss in today?

We all want to know that.Nobody wants to run afoul of aboss in a bad mood. Nothing goodcan come from that, but until nowthere’s been no sure-fire way toknow without the risky gambit ofstriking up an actual conversation.

A mood ring might provide theanswer to the critical boss-moodquestion, but it has a fatal flaw: ifyou’re close enough to see the coloron the ring, you’re probablyalready too close if the news is bad.You can end up with a bad assign-ment, or have vacation time turneddown, or who knows what kind ofbad thing might occur.

That’s where my idea comes in:Mood Suits.

Mood Suits could come in bothmen’s and women’s models, andcould be woven from fabrics withthe same color-changing propertiesas mood rings. They could be cut inthe latest styles from Paris or Milan,or they could look like real bosssuits from J.C. Penney or Macy’s.

Doesn’t matter where they’refrom, the crucial difference is,they’re Mood Suits, and sincethey’re suits, instead of rings, theycan be seen from far away.

This is the 29th year that House Organ has called on Vanderbiltstaff, students, volunteers and faculty to submit photographs tothe House Organ Photography Contest, the winners of whichwill be featured, one per month, in the 2011 House Organ Calen-dar, to be included in the combined December/January issue.

Only digital images will be accepted for the contest. Thesemay be shot with a digital camera or scanned from prints, butall entries must be submitted electronically.

We are also asking for pictures of your pets. Selected petpictures will be featured in the February 2011 issue in a “Petsof the Medical Center” feature.

And, in a new twist this year, we invite the Vanderbilt com-munity to send us links to pet videos that you have postedonline, so that we may share those links as part of the Febru-ary 2011 “Pets” issue.

Details:

Calendar Photography Contest: Open to all subject matter.Twelve winners will be selected on the basis of interest, tech-nical proficiency and suitability, and printed in the HouseOrgan Calendar.

Pet Photography Division: Photographs of pets of Vanderbiltstaff, faculty and students are welcomed. Photographic skillmatters less than pictures that show the personality of thepets. It’s OK for people to be in the pictures, too. At the discre-tion of the judges, pet pictures may be considered for the calendar.

Those who want to include some information about theirpets, such as age, or the fact that she was picked up as a stray,or that he howls when a fire truck goes by, are encouraged todo so. At the very least, tell us the pet’s name and the namesof others in the pictures.

Pet Videos: Post your pet video to a site that hosts video, suchas YouTube (Do not send the video as an attachment. Post it toa host site.) Then send the url to the contest entry addressbelow, and some of the best videos will be linked to from theHouse Organ website as part of the 2011 Pets issue.

General rules (please read and follow carefully to avoid thedisqualification of your entry): Who may enter: The contest is open to Vanderbilt staff and

faculty, volunteers, and students of graduate programs,including nursing and medical students. People who work inNews and Communications are not eligible for the calendarcompetition. The photo must have been taken by the personentering it.What type of photography is suitable? Anything—studio por-

traits, still lifes, landscapes, art photographs, aerial photogra-phy, pictures of children, pictures of adults and pictures ofpets have all won in the past.What formats are acceptable? The images must saved as .jpg

images, and must be at least 300 dpi. (That means no cellphone photos or other low-resolution images; they just won’twork for print). What information should be included with each entry? Your

name, department or school, an address and a phone numbershould be written on or attached to each entry. Again, with thepet photographs, include the name of the pet and the namesof any people in the photograph with the pet.When is the deadline? Midnight on Friday, Oct. 22. No entries

received afterward will be considered.How do I send a pet video? Post your favorite videos of your

pet or pets to a video hosting site, such as YouTube, then sendan e-mail with the url link to the entry e-mail address. How do I enter? Go to the House Organ Web site at

Health PlanFaculty and staff 2011 monthly payroll deductions for theHealth Plan will be based on salary, or more accurately, the‘Annual Base Benefits Rate’ (ABBR), an amount on whichHuman Resources bases the cost of other benefits, includinglife insurance. The ABBR is not necessarily the same as anemployee’s annual salary. Faculty and staff are urged to findtheir ABBR, upon which 2011 Health Plan rates will be based,on the ‘Job Profile’ tab of C2HR at www.vanderbilt.edu/c2hr.ABBRs as of Sept. 16, 2010, will be used to determine 2011Health Plan payroll deductions.

Administration determined that by moving to salarybasedpayroll deductions, the Plan will be better positioned to main-tain aff ordable coverage for the future. The majority of facultyand staff will not see any increase to their monthly payrolldeductions for the third consecutive year. To find what yourmonthly payroll deduction amount will be, log on tohttps://hr.vanderbilt.edu/secure/oe2010/2011options.htm.

Other changes to the Health Plan include a switch to theBlueCross S network. Not all providers that were in the P net-work are in the S network, and faculty and staff should checkwhether their providers are in-network by looking at theprovider directory on www.bcbst.com/members/vanderbilt. There isno change to the Aetna POS II network. All Vanderbilt providersare in both BlueCross S and Aetna POS II networks.

There will be no increase to office visit copays, deductiblesand out-of-pocket maximums for those who seek care at Van-derbilt. Copays, deductibles and out-of-pocket maximumswill increase for in-network and out-of-network providersand facilities.

Dental and VisionThe monthly premiums for both Dental Plans and the VisionPlan will increase in 2011, however, there are no changes tothe coverage.

Accidental Death and DismembermentThere are no changes to the Accidental Death & Dismember-ment plan or rates.

Short-term DisabilityNew enrollments in Short-term Disability will require evi-dence of insurability. You will need to answer questions aboutyour health and any existing conditions on The Hartford’sonline enrollment site. The Hartford must approve all newShort-term Disability applications, as coverage is not guaran-teed this year. This does not apply to anyone who already hasthe Short-term Disability insurance.

illy Hamblin says he had a simplegoal every shift he flew as a Vander-bilt LifeFlight pilot: “For the nursesto go home each night.”

For 26 years, since the LifeFlight pro-gram’s beginnings in 1984, Hamblinachieved that goal. He was in the pilot’sseat for more than 5,000 LifeFlight mis-sions and, at the end of every shift, thenurses went safely home.

Of course, a lot of other people did,too. LifeFlight’s coverage area of MiddleTennessee and Southern Kentucky is fullof former patients—mothers, fathers,sons, daughters, sisters, brothers—whoare living today because Hamblin wasthere to get them to medical care at acritical time.

“Billy has been here so long he is apart of the institution,” said John Mor-ris, M.D., director of the Division ofTrauma and Surgical Critical Care.“There is not one part of the programsince day one with the first LifeFlightmission in 1984, where he has not been apart of and made contributions.”

Hamblin began his aviation career inthe Army, serving in Vietnam with an

assault helicopter company. Before leav-ing the service, his duties also includedinspecting units for compliance to flightinstallation standards, and teaching oth-ers as an instructor pilot.

He says his military experience fly-ing in support of ground troops pre-pared him for his second career flying insupport of trauma victims.

In 1984, fresh out of his active dutymilitary service, Hamblin heard that Van-derbilt University Medical Center wasstarting a helicopter ambulance serviceand called to find out how he could join.

“I felt like this was important work,”he said. “I live in Clarksville and I knewthis would be a great opportunity toserve my community and the greaterNashville area.

“I was a lot younger when I came toVanderbilt. I was 35; my life was stillwide open. I knew anything could hap-pen with my career, and [being an EMSpilot] was helpful [work].”

Change and growthSince Hamblin’s career at LifeFlightextends to the entire history of the pro-gram, he has seen the change andgrowth over the years. The programbegan with one, single-engine aircraft,and over time switched to dual-enginecraft, grew to multiple crafts in fourbase locations, and added fixed-wingflights to its program. Sight navigationgave way to GPS systems, and the num-ber of nurses and ground staff grew inresponse. And, Hamblin says, all thechanges have resulted in better serviceto patients and improved safety for theLifeFlight staff.

are injured children and gunshot policeofficers.

“I have seen how this program saveslives and makes a huge impact on somany people, but never felt like I wassaving anyone, I was just doing my partto help,” Hamblin said. “The saving isbeing done in the back by the nursesand by the doctors at Vanderbilt. We justuse our skills to fly the aircraft and getback safely.”

Over the years Hamblin held manypositions in the program including leadpilot, and safety officer, and has been amentor and guiding hand to more thantwo decades of pilots and flight officers.Over that time, Hamblin has honed the

precepts he emphasizes: “A pilot is onlyas good as his last mission,” Hamblinsays. He tells pilots to stay focused, staycalm, and—that phrase again—get thenurses home at night. “I always told thenew guys the same thing,” he said.

“It was a privilege and honor to workwith such bright people,” he said. “[Van-derbilt is] such a quality institution.”

One Last FlightEarlier this summer, almost 26 years tothe day after LifeFlight’s first mission in1984, Hamblin made his last flight as anEMS pilot. It was reasonably routine; thecrew flew from the Clarksville base andpicked up a cab driver with gunshot

wounds. On the way to Vanderbilt, thepatient was conscious and, in the waythat patients sometimes ask questions topass the time, asked the nurses who wasflying the helicopter. And, in the waythat nurses will answer questions tohelp a patient feel comfortable, they toldhim Billy Hamblin’s name.

After the craft was safely on the heli-pad, the patient made good use of thatinformation and, at the same time, put afitting cap to the veteran pilot’s career.The gunshot man looked up from hisstretcher into the eyes of the man whohad flown the helicopter. “Billy, you dida good job,” he said.

n Since 2002, Vanderbilt has heldEmployee Celebration Month each yearduring September. Employee Celebra-tion Month was filled with festivitiessuch as a picnic, tailgate, Employee Ser-vice Awards, tours, concerts, brown baglearning sessions, tasting events, fashionshows and many other events to encour-age celebration across the university.

Celebration Month has become a timemany staff and faculty look forward toeach year.

However, staff and faculty feedbackhas consistently demonstrated thatattempting to hold too many festivitiesduring only one month creates scheduleconflicts for those who wish to attend.

Employee Celebration events willnow be held throughout the year to max-imize opportunities for participation.After conducting a staff and faculty Cel-

ebration survey, and reviewing hun-dreds of responses, the Employee Cele-bration Committee is implementing aschedule change which will include allthe same great events, and a few changessuch as a University picnic in May.

“The committee has done a fine job inevaluating Employee Celebration’sevent schedule, reviewing survey dataand making recommendations for thischange,” said Jerry Fife, vice chancellorfor Administration. “While many of ourfaculty and staff would enjoy attendingevents, fall is an extremely busy timeacross the University with our studentsreturning. Changes in the calendar willallow for much better attendance andcelebration.”

Jeff Balser, M.D., Ph.D., vice chancel-lor for Health Affairs and Dean of theSchool of Medicine, also spoke in favorof the change.

“Employee Celebration has evolvedinto an important component of Vander-bilt’s culture. Whether announcing ournewest Commodore Award winner orcongratulating colleagues for years of distinguished service, Celebration is anexperience which bonds us together asone university,” he said. “Broaden ingEmployee Celebration’s schedule improvesour opportunity to acknowledge the signif-icant contributions of our staff and faculty.”
