Solidworks – House Exterior 1. Create a new part and save
a. Click the New button (or hold your mouse over the Solidworks logo, Click File, and New).
b. Select Part and Click Ok.
c. Click the Save button (or hold your
mouse over the Solidworks logo, Click File, and Save As).
d. Change the File Name to House Exterior (be sure the file is saving into Documents).
e. Click Save.
2. Draw a Rectangle
a. Click the Sketch Tab (if it is not already selected – See Right).
b. Click the Sketch button.
c. Select the Front Plane.
d. Click on the Rectangle Tool.
e. Start at the Origin Point (where the two red lines meet), click and hold down the left mouse button, drag your mouse to draw a rectangle, and release the mouse.
3. Resize the Rectangle
a. Click Smart Dimension
b. Click once on the left vertical line of the rectangle.
c. Drag your mouse inside of the rectangle (away from the line but do not click on the center of the rectangle).
d. Click again to bring up the modify box.
e. Change the height of the rectangle to 30.
f. Click on the top of the rectangle and repeat steps C and D.
g. Change the width of the Rectangle to 40.

h. Click the Green Checkmark in the Properties Manager (left side of the screen).
i. Click Exit Sketch.
4. Extruding the Rectangle
a. Click Zoom Out to Fit
b. In the Feature Manager Design Tree, make sure your Sketch is selected (highlighted in blue).
c. Click the Features tab and Select Extrude Boss/Base.
d. Set you Depth to 100.
e. Click the Green Checkmark.
f. Click Zoom Out to Fit.
5. Drawing the Outline of your House
a. Click View Orientation and select Front (or click on the front face of the Orientation Cube).
b. Click the Sketch tab and select the Line tool.
c. Starting at the bottom-‐left corner of the rectangle, click on the corner point and drag your mouse across the screen (without holding down the mouse button). You should see a blue line trailing you mouse from where you first clicked.
d. Click the bottom-‐right corner of the
rectangle to create another point.

e. To complete the outline of the house, complete the following steps: (see images below for examples) i. On the right side of the rectangle, click about half way up that side.
ii. Click in the middle of the top part of the rectangle.
iii. Click in the middle of the left side of the rectangle.
iv. Click the point where you started your outline (the bottom-‐left corner of the rectangle).
f. Click the Green Checkmark in the under Line Properties.
g. Click the second Green Checkmark under Insert Line.
h. Click Exit Sketch.
6. Cutting out the Outline
a. Make sure your Sketch is selected in the Feature Manager Design Tree (highlighted in blue).
b. Click the Features Tab and select Extrude Cut.
c. Change our View Orientation to Trimetric (the front corner of the Orientation Cube).
d. Set your End Condition: Through All
The finished outline should look something like the picture to the right.

e. Check the box next to “Flip side to cut” (found below the End Condition). Instead of cutting the outline out of the original block, checking the “Flip side” box will keep the shape and cut out the rest of the draw (see right).
f. Click the Green Checkmark.
7. Creating the Roof Eaves
a. Click the right side of the Roof Face.
b. Click the Sketch Tab and select the Rectangle tool.
c. Click on the bottom left corner of the Roof Face.
d. Drag your mouse to the other corner of that Roof Face and drag down (away from the house) to create a rectangle. Click again to finalize the rectangle.
e. Click Smart Dimension.
f. Click one of the short sides of the rectangle and change it to 1 (see Below)
g. Click Exit Sketch.
h. Make sure your Sketch is selected in the Features
Manager Design Tree.
i. Click the Features Tab and select Extrude Boss/Base.
j. Click View Orientation and select Front.
k. Drag the Direction Arrow so it points back towards the house (see next page for picture)
l. Change the Depth to 0.10

m. Click the Green Checkmark.
n. Click View Orientation and select Left (or the Left side of the Orientation Cube).
o. Repeat Steps A-‐M on the left side of the Roof Face.
p. Click View Orientation and select Trimetric.
8. Add an Addition onto the House
a. Click View Orientation and select Right (or the right face of the Orientation Cube).
b. Click on the face of the house (not the roof – see right).
c. Click the Sketch tab and select the Line Tool.
d. Starting in the middle of the rectangle, hold your mouse over the bottom of the rectangle.
e. A point will appear representing the middle of that line. Click on that point, drag your mouse up to the roof line, another dot will appear representing the middle of that line. Click on that point.
f. Click on the top of the Roof half way between your line and the right side of the house (no point will appear, you will have to estimate this).
g. Complete this outline by clicking on the top and bottom of the house face (points will appear) and click on the point you started with.
h. Click the Green Checkmark in the under Line Properties.
i. Click the second Green Checkmark under Insert Line.

j. Click Smart Dimension.
k. Click one of the diagonal lines of your outline and drag the mouse straight up (above the roof line). Click again to bring up the Modify Box.
l. Set the distance to 25.
m. Click Exit Sketch.
n. Click View Orientation and select Trimetric.
o. Make sure your sketch is selected in the Feature Manager Design Tree, click on the Features tab and select Extrude Boss/Base.
p. Under Direction 1, set your End Condition to Blind and your Depth to 40.
q. Below Direction 1, locate the check box next to Direction 2. Click the box next to Direction 2.
r. Under Direction 2, set your End Condition to “To Next”.
s. Click the Green Checkmark.
9. Creating a Car Port
a. Click on the front house face of the Addition.
b. Click on the Sketch Tab and Select the Rectangle Tool.
c. Starting on the bottom of the house, draw a rectangle (do not start at the bottom-‐right corner of the house and do not draw up to the roof line.)
d. Click on Smart Dimension.
e. Set the Rectangle width to 27.5 and the height to 12.
f. Click on the right side of the rectangle then click on the right side of the house.
g. Set the distance between the two to 5.

h. Click Exit Sketch.
i. Make sure your sketch is selected in the Feature Manager Design Tree, click on the Features Tab and select Extrude Cut.
j. Set the End Condition to Through All.
k. Click the Green Checkmark.
10. Adding Doors
a. To add a front door, click on the front face of the house.
b. Click the Sketch Tab and select the Rectangle tool.
c. In the middle of that face, hold your mouse over the bottom edge of the house, hold down the left mouse button and draw a rectangle.
d. Click Smart Dimension.
e. Change the width of the rectangle to 5 and the height to 11.
f. Click the left side of the rectangle then click the left side of the house. Set the distance between the them to 17.5 (distance may very depending where on the house you are drawing a door).
g. Click Exit Sketch.
h. Make sure your sketch is selected in the Feature Manager Design Tree (highlighted in blue).
i. Click the Features tab and select Extrude Cut.
j. Set the depth to 1.
k. Click the Green Checkmark.
l. To add additional doors, click on the face of the house you wish to draw and repeat steps B through K.
11. Adding Windows

a. To add windows the front of the house, click on the front face of the house.
b. Click the Sketch tab and select the Rectangle tool.
c. Draw a rectangle (on left side of the door, do not touch the sides of the door or the house).
d. Click on Smart Dimension.
e. Set the width of the window to 7 and height to 5.5.
f. Click on the bottom of the window then click on the bottom of the house.
g. Set the distance between them to 5.
h. Repeat this process with the left side of the rectangle and left side of the house (also setting the distance to 5).
i. Repeat steps C through H on the other side of the door.
j. Click Exit Sketch.
k. Make sure your sketch is selected in the Feature Manager Design Tree (highlighted in blue).
l. Click the Features tab and select Extrude Cut.
m. Set your Depth to 1.
n. Click the Green Checkmark.
o. To add additional windows to the house, click on the face you wish to add a window and repeat steps B, C, D, and J through N. You can resize your windows, or the distance between the sides, top, or bottom of the house to whatever you wish. Caution: do not draw your Windows directly on the top, bottom, or sides of the house.
12. Decorate your House

a. Click on any face of the house you wish to change and click on Appearances (next to View Orientation).
b. Choose a color from the properties manager on the left hand side, or click the plus box next to appearances on the right side of the screen for material options.
c. When you have selected your desired color or surface, click the Green Checkmark in the
properties manager (you have to double click on some of the textures on the right side).
d. Repeat this process for the remainder of the house (you may have change your View Orientation to see other faces of the house).
13. Saving and Submitting
a. Click View Orientation and select Trimetric (or the front-‐top corner of the Orientation Cube).
b. Click the save icon (at top of the screen) to save your drawing.

c. Click the triangle next to the save icon (or roll your mouse over the Solidworks logo and click File).
d. Click Save As
e. Change the Save As Type to JPEG (.jpg) (ensure your file is being saved into Documents)
f. Click Save.
g. Log on to Canvas.
h. Go to the Switch Plate – Submit
i. Click Browse or Choose File.
j. Select your file from Documents and click Open.
k. Click Submit Assignment.
