SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICEThe California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act requires the Governor of Californiato publish a list of substances known to the state to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm, and requires businesses to warn customers of potential exposure to such substances.

Gas appliances can cause minor exposure to four of these substances, namely benzene, carbonmonoxide, formaldehyde and soot, caused primarily by the incomplete combustion of natural gasor LP fuels. Properly adjusted burners, indicated by a bluish rather than a yellow flame, will minimizeincomplete combustion. Exposure to these substances can be minimized by venting with an open window or using a ventilation fan or hood.

WARNING: NEVER use thisappliance as a space heater to heat orwarm the room. Doing so may result in carbon monoxide poisoning andoverheating of the oven.

Locate the range out of kitchen trafficpath and out of drafty locations to preventpilot outage (on standing pilot models)and poor air circulation.

Be sure all packaging materials are removedfrom the range before operating it toprevent fire or smoke damage should thepackaging material ignite.

Be sure your range is correctly adjusted by a qualified service technician or installerfor the type of gas (natural or LP) that isto be used. Your range can be convertedfor use with either type of gas. See theInstallation of the range section.

WARNING: These adjustments mustbe made by a qualified service technician in accordance with the manufacturer’sinstructions and all codes and requirementsof the authority having jurisdiction. Failureto follow these instructions could result inserious injury or property damage. Thequalified agency performing this workassumes responsibility for the conversion.

Be careful when you clean the cooktopbecause the area over the pilot (onstanding pilot models) will be hot.

After prolonged use of a range, high floortemperatures may result and many floorcoverings will not withstand this kind ofuse. Never install the range over vinyl tileor linoleum that cannot withstand suchtype of use. Never install it directly overinterior kitchen carpeting.

Do not leave children alone or unattendedwhere a range is hot or in operation. Theycould be seriously burned.

Do not allow anyone to climb, stand orhang on the oven door, broiler door orcooktop. They could damage the rangeand even tip it over, causing severepersonal injury.

CAUTION: Items of interest tochildren should not be stored in cabinetsabove a range or on the backsplash of arange—children climbing on the range to reach items could be seriously injured.

Clean only parts listed in this Owner’sManual.

Never wear loose fitting or hanginggarments while using the appliance. Becareful when reaching for items stored incabinets over the range. Flammablematerial could be ignited if brought incontact with flame or hot oven surfacesand may cause severe burns.

Do not store flammable materials in anoven, a range broiler or near a cooktop.

Do not store or use combustible materials, gasoline or other flammable vapors andliquids in the vicinity of this or any otherappliance.

Do not let cooking grease or otherflammable materials accumulate in or near the range.

Do not use water on grease fires. Neverpick up a flaming pan. Turn the controlsoff. Smother a flaming pan on a surfaceburner by covering the pan completelywith a well-fitting lid, cookie sheet or flattray. Use a multi-purpose dry chemical or foam-type fire extinguisher.

Flaming grease outside a pan can be put out by covering it with baking soda or, if available, by using a multi-purpose drychemical or foam-type fire extinguisher.

Flame in the oven can be smotheredcompletely by closing the oven door andturning the control to off or by using amulti-purpose dry chemical or foam-type fire extinguisher.

Let the burner grates and other surfacescool before touching them or leavingthem where children can reach them.

Never block the vents (air openings) of the range. They provide the air inlet andoutlet that are necessary for the range tooperate properly with correct combustion.Air openings are located at the rear of the cooktop, at the top and bottom of theoven door, and at the bottom of the rangeunder the broiler door.

Large scratches or impacts to glass doors can lead to broken or shattered glass.

Do not use the oven for a storage area. Items stored in the oven can ignite.

Keep the oven free from grease buildup.

Place the oven shelves in the desiredposition while the oven is cool.

Pulling out the shelf to the stop-lock is aconvenience in lifting heavy foods. It isalso a precaution against burns fromtouching hot surfaces of the door or oven walls.

Do not heat unopened food containers. Pressure could build up and the containercould burst, causing an injury.

When using cooking or roasting bags inthe oven, follow the manufacturer’sdirections.

Do not use your oven to dry newspapers. If overheated, they can catch fire.

Use only glass cookware that isrecommended for use in gas ovens.

Always remove the broiler pan from range as soon as you finish broiling. Grease leftin the pan can catch fire if oven is usedwithout removing the grease from thebroiler pan.

When broiling, if meat is too close to theflame, the fat may ignite. Trim excess fat toprevent excessive flare-ups.

Make sure the broiler pan is in placecorrectly to reduce the possibility of grease fires.

If you should have a grease fire in the broiler pan, turn off the oven control, andkeep the broiler door and oven doorclosed to contain fire until it burns out.

For safety and proper cooking performance, always bake and broil with the oven andbroiler doors closed.

Never leave jars of fat drippings on or nearyour range.

Stand away from the range when opening the door of a hot oven. The hot air and steam that escape can cause burns to hands, face and eyes.

OVEN

COOK MEAT AND POULTRY THOROUGHLY…Cook meat and poultry thoroughly—meat to at least an INTERNAL temperature of 160°F and poultryto at least an INTERNAL temperature of 180°F. Cooking to these temperatures usually protectsagainst foodborne illness.

WARNING: NEVER cover any slots, holes or passages in the ovenbottom or cover an entire rack withmaterials such as aluminum foil. Doing so blocks air flow through the oven andmay cause carbon monoxide poisoning.Aluminum foil linings may also trap heat, causing a fire hazard.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION.READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING.

SURFACE BURNERSUse proper pan size—avoid pans that are unstable or easily tipped. Select cookware having flatbottoms large enough to cover burner grates. To avoid spillovers, make sure cookware is largeenough to contain the food properly. This will both save cleaning time and prevent hazardousaccumulations of food, since heavy spattering or spillovers left on range can ignite. Use pans withhandles that can be easily grasped and remain cool.

Always use the LITE position (on electricignition models) or the HI position (onstanding pilot models) when igniting the top burners and make sure the burners have ignited.

Never leave the surface burnersunattended at high flame settings.Boilovers cause smoking and greasyspillovers that may catch on fire.

Adjust the top burner flame size so it does not extend beyond the edge of thecookware. Excessive flame is hazardous.

Use only dry pot holders—moist or damppot holders on hot surfaces may result inburns from steam. Do not let pot holderscome near open flames when liftingcookware. Do not use a towel or other bulky cloth in place of a pot holder.

When using glass cookware, make sure it is designed for top-of-range cooking.

To minimize the possibility of burns, ignition of flammable materials andspillage, turn cookware handles toward theside or back of the range withoutextending over adjacent burners.

Carefully watch foods being fried at a highflame setting.

Always heat fat slowly, and watch as it heats.

Do not leave any items on the cooktop. The hot air from the vent may igniteflammable items and will increase pressurein closed containers, which may causethem to burst.

If a combination of oils or fats will be usedin frying, stir together before heating or asfats melt slowly.

Use a deep fat thermometer wheneverpossible to prevent overheating fat beyondthe smoking point.

Use the least possible amount of fat foreffective shallow or deep-fat frying. Fillingthe pan too full of fat can cause spilloverswhen food is added.

Do not flame foods on the cooktop. If youdo flame foods under the hood, turn thefan on.

Do not use a wok on the cooking surface if the wok has a round metal ring that isplaced over the burner grate to support the wok. This ring acts as a heat trap, which may damage the burner grate andburner head. Also, it may cause the burnerto work improperly. This may cause a carbon monoxide level above that allowed by current standards, resulting in a health hazard.

Foods for frying should be as dry aspossible. Frost on frozen foods or moistureon fresh foods can cause hot fat to bubbleup and over the sides of the pan.

Never try to move a pan of hot fat, especially a deep fat fryer. Wait until the fatis cool.

Do not leave plastic items on thecooktop—they may melt if left too close tothe vent.

Keep all plastics away from the surfaceburners.

To avoid the possibility of a burn, always becertain that the controls for all burners areat the OFF position and all grates are coolbefore attempting to remove them.

If range is located near a window, do nothang long curtains that could blow over thesurface burners and create a fire hazard.

Always turn the surface burner controls offbefore removing cookware.

SURFACE BURNERS (cont.) When a pilot goes out (on standing pilot

models), you will detect a faint odor of gas as your signal to relight the pilot. Whenrelighting the pilot, make sure burnercontrols are in the off position, and followinstructions in this book to relight.

If you smell gas, and you have alreadymade sure pilots are lit (on standing pilotmodels), turn off the gas to the range andcall a qualified service technician. Neveruse an open flame to locate a leak.

Do not place or store items that can melt or catch fire on the grates, even when thecooktop is not being used.

Keep range clean and free ofaccumulations of grease or spillovers, which may ignite.

Do not locate the range where it may be subject to strong drafts. Any openings in the floor or wallbehind the range should be sealed. Make sure the openings around the base of the range that supplyfresh air for combustion and ventilation are not obstructed by carpeting or woodwork.

FLOORING UNDER THE RANGE

Your range, like many other household items,is heavy and can settle into soft floor coveringssuch as cushioned vinyl or carpeting. Use care when moving the range on this type offlooring. It is recommended that the followingsimple and inexpensive instructions befollowed to protect your floor. The range should be installed on a sheet ofplywood (or similar material). When the floorcovering ends at the front of the range, thearea that the range will rest on should be builtup with plywood to the same level or higherthan the floor covering.

This will allow the range to be moved forcleaning or servicing. Also, make sure yourfloor covering will withstand 180°F. (See theInstallation Safety Instructions section).Make sure the wall coverings around yourrange can withstand the heat generated (up to200°F) by the range. (See the InstallationSafety Instructions section).

Leveling legs are located on each corner ofthe base of the range. Your range must belevel in order to produce proper cooking andbaking results. After it is in its final location, place a level horizontally on any oven shelf

and check the levelness front to back andside to side. Level the range by adjusting theleveling legs or by placing shims under thecorners as needed.

Using the gas surface burners.Throughout this manual, features and appearance may vary from your model.

Surface Lighting Instructions for Electric Ignition ModelsThe surface burners on some models are lit byelectric ignition, eliminating the need for standingpilot lights with constantly burning flames.

In case of a power failure, you can lightthe surface burners on your range with a match. Hold a lit match to the burner, then turn the knob to the LITE position.Use extreme caution when lighting burnersthis way.

Surface burners in use when anelectrical power failure occurs willcontinue to operate normally.

The electrode of the spark igniter isexposed. When one burner is turnedto LITE, all the burners spark. Do notattempt to disassemble or cleanaround any burner while anotherburner is on. An electric shock mayresult, which could cause you toknock over hot cookware.

Surface Lighting Instructions for Standing Pilot ModelsThe surface burners on these ranges havestanding pilots that must be lit initially.

To light them:

Be sure surface burner controlknobs are in the OFF position.

Lift the cooktop up and prop itopen with the prop rod provided(see the Care and cleaning of the range section).

Locate the 2 pilot ports and lighteach of them with a match.

To avoid pilot outage, slowly lowerthe cooktop after lighting the pilots.

Surface Burner ControlsThe knobs that turn the surface burners on andoff are located on the control panel on the frontof the range. The two surface knobs on the leftcontrol the left front and left rear burners. Thetwo surface knobs on the right control the rightfront and right rear burners.

To Use a Surface Burner

Push the control knob in and turn itto LITE (HI on pilot models). Onelectric ignition models, you willhear a little clicking noise—thesound of the electric spark ignitingthe burner.

After the burner ignites, turn theknob to adjust the flame size.

After Lighting a Burner

Check to be sure the burner youturned on is the one you want to use.

Do not operate a burner for anextended period of time withoutcookware on the grate. The finish onthe grate may chip without cookware to absorb the heat.

Be sure the burners and grates are cool before you place your hand, a pot holder, cleaning cloths or othermaterials on them.

How to Select Flame SizeWatch the flame, not the knob, as you reduceheat. The flame size on a gas burner shouldmatch the cookware you are using.

For safe handling of cookware, never let theflame extend up the sides of the cookware.Any flame larger than the bottom of thecookware is wasted and only serves toheat the handle.

Top of Range CookwareAluminum: Medium-weight cookware isrecommended because it heats quicklyand evenly. Most foods brown evenly inan aluminum skillet. Use saucepans withtight-fitting lids when cooking withminimum amounts of water.

Cast-iron: If heated slowly, most skilletswill give satisfactory results.

Enamelware: Under some conditions, the enamel of some cookware may melt. Follow cookware manufacturer’srecommendations for cooking methods.

Glass: There are 2 types of glasscookware—those for oven use only and those for top-of-range cooking(saucepans, coffee and teapots). Glass conducts heat very slowly.

Heatproof Glass Ceramic: Can be used for either surface or oven cooking. Itconducts heat very slowly and cools veryslowly. Check cookware manufacturer’sdirections to be sure it can be used on gas ranges.

Stainless Steel: This metal alone has poor heating properties and is usuallycombined with copper, aluminum or other metals for improved heatdistribution. Combination metal skilletsusually work satisfactorily if they are usedwith medium heat as the manufacturerrecommends.

Never let the flame extend up thesides of the cookware.

Oven Shelves

The shelves are designed with stop-locksso when placed correctly on the shelfsupports, they will stop before comingcompletely out of the oven and will nottilt when you are removing food fromthem or placing food on them.

When placing cookware on a shelf, pull the shelf out to the bump on theshelf support. Place the cookware on theshelf, then slide the shelf back into theoven. This will eliminate reaching intothe hot oven.

To remove the shelves from the oven, pullthem toward you, tilt front end upwardand pull them out.

To replace, place shelf on shelf supportwith stop-locks (curved extension ofshelf) facing up and toward back of oven.Tilt up front and push shelf toward backof oven until it goes past the bump onthe shelf support. Then lower front ofshelf and push it all the way back.

Using the oven.Throughout this manual, features and appearance may vary from your model.

Power Outage—Electric Ignition ModelsCAUTION: Do not make any attempt tooperate the electric ignition oven during anelectric power failure. The oven or broilercannot be lit during a power failure. Gaswill not flow unless the glow bar is hot.

If the oven is in use when a power failureoccurs, the oven burner shuts off andcannot be re-lit until power is restored. This is because the flow of gas isautomatically stopped and will notresume when power is restored until the glow bar has reached operatingtemperature.

Oven Lighting Instructions for Standing Pilot ModelsThe standing oven pilot must be lit initially.

To light the oven pilot:

Be sure the OVEN TEMP knob is inthe OFF position.

Open the oven door and remove the oven bottom. See theRemovable Oven Bottom section inCare and Cleaning.

Oven Vents The oven is vented through

duct openings at the front of thebacksplash.

Do not block the opening whencooking in the oven—it is importantthat the flow of hot air from the ovenand fresh air to the oven burner beuninterrupted.

The vent openings and nearby surfacesmay become hot during baking andbroiling. Do not touch them.

Do not leave plastic items on thecooktop—they may melt if left tooclose to the vent.

Handles of pots and pans on thecooktop may become hot if left tooclose to the vent.

Metal items will become very hot ifthey are left on the cooktop and couldcause burns.

Do not leave any items on the cooktop. The hot air from the vent may igniteflammable items and will increasepressure in closed containers, whichmay cause them to burst.

Oven Shelf PositionsThe oven has four shelf supports—A (bottom), B, C and D (top).

Shelf positions for cooking are suggestedin the Using your oven for baking andUsing your oven for roasting sections.

The type of margarine will affect baking performance! Most recipes for baking have been developedusing high fat products such as butter ormargarine (80% fat). If you decrease the fat, therecipe may not give the same results as with ahigher fat product.

Recipe failure can result if cakes, pies, pastries, cookies or candies are madewith low fat spreads. The lower the fatcontent of a spread product, the morenoticeable these differences become.

Federal standards require productslabeled “margarine” to contain at least80% fat by weight. Low fat spreads, on the other hand, contain less fat and morewater. The high moisture content ofthese spreads affects the texture andflavor of baked goods. For best resultswith your old favorite recipes, usemargarine, butter or stick spreadscontaining at least 70% vegetable oil.

The oven has 4 shelf positions.

Using the oven for baking. To avoid possible burns, place the shelves in the desired position before you turn the oven on.

How to Set the Oven For BakingClose the oven door. Then turn theOVEN TEMP knob to the desiredtemperature.

Check the food for doneness at the minimum time on the recipe.Cook longer if necessary. Turn the OVEN TEMP knob to OFF andremove the food.

Oven ShelvesArrange the oven shelf or shelves in thedesired locations while the oven is cool. The correct shelf position depends onthe kind of food and the browningdesired.

As a general rule, place most foods in the middle of the oven, on either theshelf position B or C. See the chart for suggested shelf positions.

Type of Food Shelf PositionAngel food cake A

Biscuits, muffins or cupcakes B or C

Cookies C or D

Brownies B or C

Layer cakes B or C

Bundt or pound cakes B

Pies or pie shells B or C

Frozen pies (on cookie sheet) B or C

Casseroles B or C

PreheatingPreheat the oven for 10 minutes if the recipe calls for it. Preheat meansbringing the oven up to the specifiedtemperature before putting the food in the oven.

Preheating is necessary for good resultswhen baking cakes, cookies, pastry andbreads. For most casseroles and roasts, preheating is not necessary.

Baking PansUse the proper baking pan. The type of finish onthe pan determines the amount of browning thatwill occur.

Glass baking dishes also absorb heat. When baking in glass baking dishes, lower the temperature by 25°F and usethe recommended cooking time in therecipe. This is not necessary whenbaking pies or casseroles.

Dark, rough or dull pans absorb heatresulting in a browner, crisper crust.Use this type for pies.

Shiny, bright and smooth pans reflectheat, resulting in a lighter, moredelicate browning. Cakes and cookiesrequire this type of pan.

Pan PlacementFor even cooking and proper browning, there must be enough room for aircirculation in the oven. Baking results willbe better if baking pans are centered asmuch as possible rather than beingplaced to the front or to the back of the oven.

Pans should not touch each other or thewalls of the oven. Allow 1 to 11⁄2 inchspace between pans as well as from theback of the oven, the door and the sides.

If you need to use two shelves, stagger the pans so one is not directly above the other.

Place most foods in the middle ofthe oven.

CookiesFlat cookie sheets (without sides)produce better-looking cookies. Cookiesbaked in a jelly roll pan (short sides allaround) may have darker edges and paleor light browning may occur.

Do not use a cookie sheet so large that ittouches the walls or the door of the oven.Never entirely cover a shelf with a largecookie sheet.

For best results, use only one cookiesheet in the oven at a time.

PiesFor best results, bake pies in dark, roughor dull pans to produce a browner, crisper crust.

Frozen pies in foil pans should be placed on analuminum cookie sheet for baking since the shinyfoil pan reflects heat away from the pie crust; thecookie sheet helps retain it.

Don’t PeekSet the timer for the estimated cookingtime and do not open the door to look at your food. Most recipes provideminimum and maximum baking timessuch as “bake 30–40 minutes.”

DO NOT open the door to check until theminimum time. Opening the oven door frequentlyduring cooking allows heat to escape and makesbaking times longer. Your baking results may also be affected.

CakesWhen baking cakes, warped or bent pans willcause uneven baking results and poorly shapedproducts.

A cake baked in a pan larger than therecipe recommends will usually be crisper, thinner and drier than it should be.

If baked in a pan smaller thanrecommended, it may be undercookedand batter may overflow.

Check the recipe to make sure the pan size usedis the one recommended.

Using the oven for roasting.Roasting is cooking by dry heat. Tender meat or poultry can be roasted uncovered in your oven. Roastingtemperatures, which should be low and steady, keep spattering to a minimum.

Roasting is really a baking procedure used for meats. Roasting is easy; just follow these directions:

How to Set the Oven For RoastingPlace the shelf in the A or Bposition. No preheating is necessary.

Check the weight of the meat. Placeit fat side up (or for poultry, breast-side-up) on a roasting rack in ashallow pan. The melting fat willbaste the meat. Select a pan as closeto the size of the meat as possible.Line the pan with aluminum foilwhen using the pan for marinating, cooking with fruits, cooking heavilycured meats or basting food duringcooking.

Turn the OVEN TEMP knob to thedesired setting.

After roasting is complete, turn theOVEN TEMP knob to OFF and thenremove the food from the oven.

Place the shelf in the A or Bposition.

You may find that your new oven cooks differently than the one it replaced. Use your new oven for a few weeks tobecome more familiar with it. If you still think your new oven is too hot or too cold, you can adjust the thermostatyourself.

Do not use thermometers, such as those found in grocery stores, to check the temperature setting of your oven. These thermometers may vary 20–40°F.

NOTE: This adjustment will not affect the broiling temperatures. The adjustment will be retained after a power failure.

Adjust the oven thermostat—Easy to do yourself!

Pull the OVEN TEMP knob off the rangeand look at the back side.To make an adjustment, loosen(approximately one turn), but do not completely remove, the twoscrews on the back of the knob.

With the back of the knob facingyou, hold the outer edge of the knobwith one hand and turn the front ofthe knob with the other hand.

To increase the oven temperature, move the top screw toward the right. You’ll hear a click for each notch youmove the knob.

To decrease the oven temperature, move the top screw toward the left.

Each click will change the oventemperature approximately 10°F.(Range is plus or minus 60°F fromthe arrow.) We suggest that you makethe adjustment one click from theoriginal setting and check ovenperformance before making anyadditional adjustments.

After the adjustment is made, retightenscrews so they are snug, but becareful not to overtighten.

Replace the knob, matching the flatarea of the knob to the shaft, andcheck performance.

Using the oven for broiling. ge.com

Broiling is cooking food by direct heat from above the food. Most fish and tender cuts of meat can be broiled. Followthese steps to keep spattering and smoking to a minimum.

Your range has a compartment below the oven for broiling. A specially designed broiler pan allows dripping fat todrain away from the food.

Both the oven door and broiler compartment drawer should be closed during broiling.

How to Set Your Oven for BroilingYou can change the distance of thefood from the heat source bypositioning the broiler rack in the broiler compartment:–A (bottom of broiler

compartment). –B (center of broiler compartment).–C (top of broiler compartment). Most broiling should be done inposition A.

Preheat the broiler for best results.

If the meat has fat or gristle around the edge, cut vertical slashesthrough it about 2 inches apart, but don’t cut into the meat. Werecommend that you trim the fat toprevent excessive smoking, leaving alayer about 1/8 inch thick.

Close the oven door and broilercompartment drawer.

Turn the OVEN TEMP knob to BROIL.

Turn most foods once duringcooking. Time foods for about one-half the total cooking time, turnfood, then continue to cook topreferred doneness.

Turn the OVEN TEMP knob to OFF.Remove the broiler pan from thebroiler rack and serve the foodimmediately. Leave the pan outside the range to cool.

Use of Aluminum FoilNever cover the oven bottom with aluminum foil.

You can use aluminum foil to line yourbroiler pan and broiler grid. However, you must mold the foil tightly to the panand cut slits in the foil to open all slots in the grid.

Aluminum foil may also be used to catcha spillover. To do so, place a small sheetof foil on a lower shelf several inchesbelow the food.

Never entirely cover a shelf withaluminum foil. This will disturb the heatcirculation and result in poor baking.

Broiler CompartmentThe broiler pan is held in place in thebroiler rack.

To remove the broiler pan:

Gently pull forward on the dropdown broiler door.

Pull the broiler rack with panforward until the rack stops. Graspthe broiler pan and remove it fromthe broiler rack.

To replace the broiler pan:

Slide the broiler pan onto the rackand push both the broiler pan andthe rack all the way into the broilercompartment.

Close the broiler door.

Broiling Guide The oven door and broiler compartment

drawer must be closed during broiling.

Always use the broiler pan that comeswith your range.

If desired, marinate meats or chickenbefore broiling. Or, brush withbarbecue sauce the last 5 to 10 minutes.

When arranging food on pan, do notlet fatty edges hang over the sides. Thefat drippings will soil the broilercompartment.

Use tongs to turn the meat. Piercedmeat loses juices.

Burner GratesGrates should be washed regularly and afterspillovers. Wash them in hot, soapy water andrinse with clean water.

After cleaning, dry thoroughly by puttingthem in a warm oven for a few minutes.Don’t put the grates back on the rangewhile they are wet. When replacing thegrates, be sure they’re positioned securelyover the burners.

To get rid of burned-on food, place thegrates in a covered container (or plasticbag) with 1/4 cup ammonia to loosen the soil. Then scrub with a soap-filledscouring pad if necessary.

Although they’re durable, the grates willgradually lose their shine, regardless ofthe best care you can give them. This isdue to their continual exposure to hightemperatures.

Do not operate a burner for an extendedperiod of time without cookware on thegrate. The finish on the grate may chipwithout cookware to absorb the heat.

Care and cleaning of the range. ge.com

Be sure electrical power is off and all surfaces are cool before cleaning any part of the range.

Proper care and cleaning are important so your range will give you efficient and satisfactory service. Follow thesedirections carefully in caring for your range to assure safe and proper maintenance.

Lift-Up CooktopClean the area under the cooktop often. Built-upsoil, especially grease, may catch on fire.

To make cleaning easier, the cooktopmay be lifted up and propped open.

Be sure all burners are turned off beforeraising the cooktop. Then remove thegrates.

Grasp the two front burner wells and liftthe cooktop up and prop it open withthe prop rod provided. Be careful of thepilots when the cooktop is up.

After cleaning underneath the cooktopwith hot, soapy water and a clean cloth, hold the cooktop up, return the proprod to its storage position and lower thecooktop until it snaps into position. Becareful not to pinch your fingers.

If your range is removed for cleaning, servicing or any reason, be sure the anti-tipdevice is re-engaged properly when the range is replaced. Failure to take thisprecaution could result in tipping of the range and cause injury.

BurnersThe holes in the surface burners of your rangemust be kept clean at all times for proper ignitionand an even, unhampered flame.

You should clean the surface burnersroutinely, especially after bad spillovers, which could clog these holes. Wipe off thesurface burners. If heavy spillover occurs, remove the surface burners from therange. The burners lift out for cleaning.Lift up the cooktop and then lift out thesurface burners.

NOTE: A screw holds each of the burners in placeto keep them from wobbling around duringshipment. Remove and discard the shipping screw.

To remove burned-on food, soak the surfaceburner in a solution of mild liquiddetergent and hot water. Soak the surfaceburner for 20 to 30 minutes. For morestubborn stains, use a cleanser like SoftScrub® brand or Bon Ami® brand. Rinsewell to remove any traces of the cleanserthat might clog the surface burneropenings. Do not use steel wool because itwill clog the surface burner openings andscratch the surface burners. If the holesbecome clogged, clean them with a smallpin or sewing needle.

Before putting the surface burner back, shake out excess water and then dry itthoroughly by setting it in a warm ovenfor 30 minutes. Then place it back in therange, making sure it is properly seatedand level.

Control Panel and KnobsIt’s a good idea to wipe the control panelafter each use of the oven. Clean withmild soap and water or vinegar andwater, rinse with clean water and polishdry with a soft cloth.

Do not use abrasive cleansers, strongliquid cleaners, plastic scouring pads oroven cleaners on the control panel—theywill damage the finish. A 50/50 solutionof vinegar and hot water works well.

The control knobs may be removed for easiercleaning.

To remove the knob, pull it straight offthe stem. Wash the knobs in soap andwater or a vinegar and hot water solution but do not soak.

Oven Shelves and Broiler RackThe shelves and broiler rack can becleaned by hand using soap and water orwith an abrasive cleaner. After cleaning, rinse the shelves and broiler rack withclean water and dry.

To remove heavy, burned-on soil, youmay use scouring pads. After scrubbing, wash with soapy water, rinse and dry.

Metal PartsDo not use steel wool, abrasives, ammoniaor commercial oven cleaners.

To safely clean surfaces: wash, rinse andthen dry with a soft cloth.

Cleaning the Oven BottomThe oven bottom has a porcelain enamel finish.

To make cleaning easier, protect the ovenbottom from excessive spillovers byplacing a cookie sheet on the shelf belowthe shelf you are cooking on. This isparticularly important when baking afruit pie or other foods with high acidcontent. Hot fruit fillings or foods that are acidic in content, such as tomatoes or sauerkraut, and sauces with vinegar or lemon juice, may cause pitting anddamage to the porcelain enamel surfaceand should be wiped up immediately.

To protect the oven bottom surface, place a piece of aluminum foil slightly largerthan the baking dish on the shelf below to catch any boilovers. It should notcompletely cover the shelf as this would cause uneven heat in the oven.Aluminum foil should not be placed on the oven bottom.

If a spillover does occur on the ovenbottom, allow the oven to cool first. Youcan clean the bottom with soap andwater, a mild abrasive cleanser, soap-filledscouring pads or an oven cleanerfollowing package directions.

Removable Oven BottomFirst remove the shelves from the oven. The oven bottom lifts from the front.

To remove:

On models so equipped, remove the knurled screw in the front of theoven bottom.

Grasp each side of the oven bottomand push it back.

Lift the front up and pull it out ofthe oven.

To replace:

Grasp each side of the oven bottomand guide its rear tabs into the slotsin the back of the oven.

Lower the oven bottom and pull itforward until it is secure under thefront oven floor edge.

On models so equipped, replace theknurled screw in the front of theoven bottom.

NOTE: If the oven bottom is replaced incorrectly, itmay warp and cause undesirable baking results.

Do not allow food spills with ahigh sugar or acid content (such astomatoes, sauerkraut, fruit juices or piefilling) to remain on the surface. Theymay cause a dull spot even after cleaning.

Household ammonia may make thecleaning job easier. Place 1/2 cup in ashallow glass or pottery container in acold oven overnight. The ammoniafumes will help loosen the burned-ongrease and food.

If necessary, you may use an oven cleaner. Follow package directions.

Cautions about using spray-on ovencleaners:

Do not spray on the electrical controlsand switches because it could cause a short circuit and result in sparking or fire.

Do not allow a film from the cleaner tobuild up on the temperature sensor—it could cause the oven to heatimproperly. (The sensor is located atthe top of the oven.) Carefully wipethe sensor clean after each ovencleaning, being careful not to movethe sensor as a change in its positioncould affect how the oven bakes.

Do not spray any oven cleaner on theoutside of the oven door, handles orany exterior surface of the oven, woodor painted surfaces. The cleaner candamage these surfaces.

Painted SurfacesPainted surfaces include the sides, control panel and door. Clean these withsoap and water or a vinegar and watersolution.

To prevent accidental tipping of therange, install the Anti-Tip devicepacked with this range. (See Installthe Anti-Tip Device in this section.)To check if the device is installedand engaged properly, carefully tip the range forward. The Anti-Tipdevice should engage and preventthe range from tipping over.

If you pull the range out from thewall for any reason, make sure theAnti-Tip device is engaged whenyou push the range back againstthe wall.

• For your safety, never use your range forwarming or heating the room. Your ovenand cooktop are not designed to heat your kitchen. Top burners should not beoperated without cookware on the grate.Such abuse could result in fire and damageto your range and will void your warranty.

• Do not store or use combustible materials, gasoline or other flammable vapors andliquids in the vicinity of this or any otherappliance. Explosions or fires could result.

• Do not use oven for a storage area. Itemsstored in the oven can ignite.

• Do not let cooking grease or otherflammable materials accumulate in or near the range.

MODEL AND SERIAL NUMBER LOCATION

You can find them on a label under thecooktop. See the Lift-Up Cooktop section inthis manual or instructions on how to lift thecooktop.

LOCATION

Do not locate the range where it may besubject to strong drafts. Any openings in the floor or wall behind the range should be sealed. Make sure the openings aroundthe base of the range that supply fresh airfor combustion and ventilation are notobstructed by carpeting or woodwork.

Your range, like many other household items, is heavy and can settle into soft floor coverings such as cushioned vinyl orcarpeting. Use care when moving the range on this type of flooring. It is recommendedthat the following simple and inexpensiveinstructions be followed to protect your floor. The range should be installed on a sheet ofplywood (or similar material). When the floorcovering ends at the front of the range, thearea that the range will rest on should bebuilt up with plywood to the same level orhigher than the floor covering. This will allow the range to be moved forcleaning or servicing. Also, make sure yourfloor covering will withstand 180°F. (See theInstallation Safety Instructions section.)Make sure the wall coverings around yourrange can withstand the heat generated (upto 200°F) by the range. (See the InstallationSafety Instructions section.)

IMPORTANT!

Remove all tape and packaging. Make surethe burners are properly seated and level.

Lift up the cooktop and remove any packingmaterial under it.

Take the accessory pack out of the ovenand/or drawer.

Check to be sure that no range parts havecome loose during shipping.

PROVIDE ADEQUATE GAS SUPPLY

Your range is designed to operate at apressure of 4″ of water column on naturalgas or, if designed for LP gas (propane orbutane), 10″ of water column.

Make sure you are supplying your rangewith the type of gas for which it isdesigned. This range is convertible for use onnatural or propane gas. If you decide to use this range on LP gas, conversionmust be made by a qualified LP installerbefore attempting to operate the rangeon that gas.For proper operation, the pressure ofnatural gas supplied to the regulator mustbe between 4″ and 13″ of water column. For LP gas, the pressure supplied mustbe between 10″ and 13″ of water column. When checking for proper operation ofthe regulator, the inlet pressure must beat least 1″ greater than the operating(manifold) pressure as given above. The pressure regulator located at theinlet of the range manifold must remainin the supply line regardless of whethernatural or LP gas is being used. A flexible metal appliance connector usedto connect the range to the gas supplyline should have an I.D. of 1/2″ and be 5 feet in length for ease of installation. In Canada, flexible connectors must besingle wall metal connectors no longerthan 6 feet in length.

1

CONNECT THE RANGE TO GAS

Shut off the main gas supply valvebefore disconnecting the old range andleave it off until the new hookup hasbeen completed. Don’t forget to relightthe pilot on other gas appliances whenyou turn the gas back on.

Because hard piping restricts movement ofthe range, the use of a CSA International-certified flexible metal appliance connectoris recommended unless local codesrequire a hard-piped connection.

2

Never use an old connector wheninstalling a new range. If the hard pipingmethod is used, you must carefully alignthe pipe; the range cannot be movedafter the connection is made.To prevent gas leaks, put pipe jointcompound on, or wrap pipe thread tapewith Teflon* around, all male (external)pipe threads.Install a manual gas line shut-off valve inthe gas line in an easily accessed locationoutside of the range. Make sure everyoneoperating the range knows where and howto shut off the gas supply to the range.Install male 1/2″ flare union adapter tothe 1/2″ NPT internal thread at inlet ofregulator. Use a backup wrench on theregulator fitting to avoid damage.Install male 1/2″ or 3/4″ flare union adapterto the NPT internal thread of the manualshut-off valve, taking care to back-up theshut-off valve to keep it from turning.Connect flexible metal applianceconnector to the adapter on the range.Position range to permit connection atthe shut-off valve. When all connections have been made, make sure all range controls are in theoff position and turn on the main gassupply valve. Use a liquid leak detector at all joints and connections to check forleaks in the system.

When using test pressures greater than1/2 psig to pressure test the gas supplysystem of the residence, disconnect therange and individual shut-off valve fromthe gas supply piping. When using testpressures of 1/2 psig or less to test thegas supply system, simply isolate therange from the gas supply system byclosing the individual shut-off valve.*Teflon: Registered trademark of DuPont

QUALITY OF FLAMES

The combustion quality of burner flamesneeds to be determined visually.

If burner flames look like (A), furtheradjustment is required. Normal burnerflames should look like (B) or (C), dependingon the type of gas you use.

With LP gas, some yellow tipping on outer cones is normal

9

(A) Yellow flames:Further adjustmentrequired

(B) Yellow tips on outercones:Normal for LP gas

(C) Soft blue flames:Normal for naturalgas

ADJUST THE OVEN BURNER AIRSHUTTER IF NECESSARY (CONT.)

For LP Gas:

The flame should have approximately 1-inch blue cones. After 30 seconds ofburner operation, check for flames liftingoff the burner ports. If lifting is observed, gradually reduce the air shutter openinguntil flames are stabilized. Some yellowtipping may be normal for LP gas.

If Adjustment is Necessary:

Loosen the lock screw located at thetop of the air shutter, then rotate theair shutter to the correct setting andretighten screw.

Oven burner flame can be checked as follows (without burner baffle inplace):

• To correct a yellow flame—Increasesize of air shutter opening.

• To correct a lifting, but distinct, blue flame—Decrease size of airshutter opening.

The air shutter should be setapproximately 2/3 open for naturalgas, and approximately full open forLP gas.

The oven burner air shutteradjustment is the same on rangeswith a gas pilot or electric ignition.
