It’s an absolute privilege to work at HotHouse Theatre. I think the most exciting part of my job is to bring each season of stunning shows and amazing artists to Albury Wodonga every year.

I love standing in the foyer immediately after a performance and watching the faces of the audience as they leave the Butter Factory auditorium. Sometimes people are still laughing about the show they saw. Sometimes they’re stunned to silence. Sometimes they’re still processing the work. Each and every time however, our audience has had a brand new experience that has touched them or moved them in some way.

The fact that a company like HotHouse exists, and indeed thrives, in a regional community of a little over 90,000 people, never ceases to amaze me. There is nothing like it anywhere in regional Australia. We are a community that love our artistic work and we support the wide range of arts organisations on our doorstep.

Next year’s season contains a number of works that won’t be seen in any other regional centre except HotHouse. We program very differently to any other regional company or venue. It’s the love of culture and the sophisticated taste of our audience that allows us to program the bold, ambitious work that we do.

We are equally excited about the development work we do in our region to nurture local talent within the community. Programs like Generate, Black Border Theatre and the Studio, are new initiatives that have become part and parcel of what we do, and why we exist.

I urge you to take the journey with us in 2014 – you won’t be disappointed.

On the one hand, Lally Katz has been writing the funniest and most original plays in the country for the

last decade; The Eisteddfod, Neighbourhood Watch, Return to Earth for example. On the other hand, Katz, Oscar Wilde-like, has been putting her genius into her life and only her talent into her work. Now the inevitable moment has come when the two must collide.

The thing is – and this is a true story – Katz was supposed to write a play about a fortune teller. But she spent her commission (and then some) actually going to a fortune teller. In New York. More than once. This is the story of what Katz was doing instead of writing a play. It features Katz, on her own, as herself, embroiled in a tale of art, love, money, shoes… and the apocalypse.

She might be alone on the stage but she’s far from lonely, bringing with her a cast of characters, from fortune tellers to mystics to Mississippi Evangelicals, encountered on the quest to cure her curses.

Anyone who’s met her will know that the word ‘irrepressible’ has nothing on Katz, even at her quietest. She makes chaos charming and catastrophe positively exuberant. She likes to be laughed at, and her method is to talk !rst and think later. Anything could happen. Seriously. ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN. It’s Lally Katz!

George Orwell’s !nal and greatest novel is set to come screaming into the Butter Factory Theatre in 2014 in

this amazing new adaptation.

‘It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen’.

Winston Smith works at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history to !t with the political agenda of the day. When Winston falls in love with Julia, his life awakens to new possibilities. Together, they begin to question the Party and are drawn towards conspiracy.

When their love is discovered, they are violently separated, detained and prepared for conversion. For those with original thoughts, there is Room 101.

Orwell’s prescient 1948 novel was a terrifying vision of the future in which everyone is slave to a tyrannical regime. It also coined the terms Big Brother, thoughtcrime, doublethink and Newspeak.

Strap yourself in for this thrilling and frightening theatrical event set against a dynamic digital backdrop. This production is sure to stun as it contemplates the ultimate crime against humanity: the total destruction of truth, freedom and individuality in favour of surveillance, obedience and conformity.

THE MOTIONOF LIGHT IN WATER

Taking its inspiration from the life and work of Samuel R. Delaney and Marilyn Hacker, two of the boldest

and most imaginative American writers of the 1960s, The Motion of Light in Water is a truly fantastic celebration of how we dream the future into being. Weaving music, language, movement and light, it takes the audience into thrilling imaginative territory.

In a world damaged by war and fearful of aliens, two embattled young beings – born in separate ghettos of a vibrant, violent city – !nd companionship in their shared struggle against the codes of gender, race and economic class.

Combining their extraordinary imaginative powers, they set out on a journey of liberation, explore beautiful and terrifying new worlds - where their deep and unique love for one another will face its greatest challenge.

B ack by popular demand! From the creative team that brought boy girl wall to the border in 2011 comes this brand

new comedy.

Leaving our shores to explore the world has been a right of passage for young Australians for decades. Many leave, most come back, and all are changed by the experience.

Some are seeking adventure - an “authentic” experience. Some set out to change the world, while others are trying to hide from the looming spectre of adulthood.

An average Australian backpacker travels to an unfamiliar and wondrous land - a place based in pure imagination, where the rules are bit different. There, He meets Her. She’s an aid worker over from Australia as well, helping to look after this place she loves; an imaginary country, somewhere beyond the borders of our known world. He’s simplistic. She’s passionate. He experiences. She documents. Packed looks at those strange times and meetings, when love isn’t the destination, and isn’t even the point. Told with The Escapists’ trademark wit, whimsy and lo-! theatrical brilliance, Packed is an unforgettable adventure.

Inspired by the overwhelming support received for last year’s collaboration, The Pyjama Girl, we present another unique

event for the region.

Letters from the Border celebrates Albury Wodonga, using the community’s own words. The project has involved sifting through letters republished in the Border Mail and the Albury Banner over the last 100 years.

We revisit our region’s history and culture since the early twentieth century, centring on key historical events, shifting attitudes and issues that have been part of our identity since Bungambrewatha became Albury in the 1830’s, and Belvoir became Wodonga in the 1850’s.

Scouring micro!che and online resources was no mean feat. We are indebted to The Border Mail, the Albury Library Museum, the Wodonga Library and the Wodonga Historical Society for their support and assistance in this mammoth project.

JON’S NOTE:Following on from the incredible interest created around 2013’s The Pyjama Girl, Travis Dowling and I were wracking our brains as to what would be a great follow up story about our local history. Then the idea struck – let’s go to the records of the Border Mail and scour the Letters to the Editor pages over the past hundred years and let that guide us as to what issues and events have caused the most impassioned responses from our own community over time.

WARNING: SMALL PARTS A Month in the Country

Each year, HotHouse Theatre hosts some of the most interesting, innovative and exciting theatre makers from all around Australia.

In partnership with AlburyCity, A Month in the Country has been running since 2004. Playwrights, performers, directors, choreographers composers, musicians and video artists have all taken the opportunity to spend a few weeks at our farmhouse at Splitters Creek. Artists taking up residencies live and work at the !ve bedroom house and make use of the attached rehearsal facility to create new, original work. While in residence, artists deliver workshops through Murray Arts to the community, schools and arts groups.

HotHouse’s own Studio Ensemble meet with the resident groups and are taken through their creative development process in an informal forum setting.

Subject to availability, the Butter Factory Theatre can also be utilised for creative development outcomes with presentations of work-in-progress showings.

Since it’s inception a decade ago, over 500 artists have taken up Month in the Country residencies with over 45 new productions having been added to the national repertoire.

Commissions

A good play takes years to create, and isn’t made in isolation. Making theatre is a collaborative process and many minds contribute to the creation of a new work.

HotHouse is one of only a few professional theatre companies in Australia that remains dedicated to commissioning, developing and producing work by Australian writers and theatre makers. We not only commission new plays, but also invest time and money in the development process to ensure that when a work reaches the stage, it is ready for production.

Some of the work that has gone through a commissioning process with HotHouse include Disarming Rosetta, The Berry Man, Australia! The Show! and 2013’s The Pyjama Girl.

In 2014, HotHouse audiences will experience Packed by the Escapists, a work commissioned in 2012, and developed throughout 2013.

IN DEVELOPMENT

The Studio

The Studio Ensemble is the company’s most advanced development program for young performance makers.

A group of 16-26 year olds are selected in early April each year, after an audition process. They commit to eight months of dedicated weekly instruction aimed at creating a generation of nationally able theatre makers in the Albury Wodonga region. They will connect with visiting artists from around the country through master classes and forums.

In 2014 that intensive tuition will consists of skill development in the following areas:

In 2013, the ensemble developed and performed the world premiere season of The Pyjama Girl by Emma Gibson. In 2014, the major project is Letters from The Border, an exploration of the history, major events and reactions to those events from our own community.

Two of the Studio members will be employed to perform in the company’s !rst ever show for children, Warning: Small Parts. (see page 14)

In 2014, The Studio will expand to include young and emerging directors and designers and their development as a part of the program.

To enquire about the process, and the many other bene!ts of being a member of the Studio Ensemble, speak with Associate Director Travis Dowling.

Black Border Theatre

Black Border Theatre has grown over the last two years through our partnerships with Hume Medicare Local and the Albury Wodonga Aboriginal Health Service. With weekly performance training and workshops, up to 12 young Aboriginal artists from our region will work with Associate Director Travis Dowling towards an end of year performance. Along the way, the group works with leading Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal artists from around the country.

Participants gain self con!dence, skills in developing scenes, acting for stage and camera as well as an overall knowledge of the process of theatre and performance.

This program is generously supported by Hume Medicare Local, the Aboriginal Bene!ts Foundation, the Besen Family Foundation, Indigenous Co-ordination Centre (Australian Government), the Arts NSW Aboriginal Regional Arts Fund, Albury Wodonga Aboriginal Health Services, and the Albury Wodonga Community Working Party.

Generate

Generate provides a performance opportunity for up to 100 high school students from our region, giving them the chance to strut their stuff on the Butter Factory Stage.

In 2014, Generate will focus on the work of the greatest playwright of all – William Shakespeare. Our aim is to give students the opportunity to experience Shakespeare in the best possible way – through performance.

HotHouse Theatre’s Associate Director Travis Dowling will work with students and teachers from up to 12 high schools to understand, contextualise and enliven Shakespeare’s plays. Students from each high school will have the opportunity to work with HotHouse Theatre’s Operations Manager Rob Scott, to experience the technical side of the trade, learning stage management, technical operation and back stage protocol.

Generate 2014 will engender a love of Shakespeare in all of the participants – that is, if they’re not in love with the Bard already.

3 – 5 October 2014

A festival of the greatest little shows on earth

Borderville is Australia’s !rst festival of vaudeville, marking 35 years of the

Flying Fruit Fly Circus calling Albury-Wodonga home.

It will include the National Training Project, an intensive two-week circus training program (from September 22) and culminate in a spectacular festive

weekend of shows and entertainments, transforming our Gateway Village and Butter Factory Theatre, into a

precinct of unexpected pleasures. It will be a springtime garden of vaudevillian

delights, daring circus adventures, sideshows, music and magic.

The Flying Fruit Fly Circus is seeking expressions of interest from short

shows, short acts, but not necessarily short artists. They want to hear from

performers, touring companies, travelling venues, production staff and anyone out there feeling compelled to

join the parade for this "edgling carnival of theatrical varieties.

Contact borderville@fruit"ycircus.com.au or visit www.fruit"ycircus.

See you at the party.
