When was the last time you saw some dolphins at anaquarium? Was it un to watch? Do you think thedolphins enjoyed it? A new lm shows just exactly
where some o these dolphins come rom. And it isnt pleasant.
The Cove is a documentary flm with a lot o blood... dolphinblood. Its all about dolphin drive hunting, which is a method ohunting dolphins that shermen use. They use boats to drive thedolphins into a bay or onto a beach. Once there, the dolphinsare prevented rom escaping and are then killed in the waterwith knives or spears. The dolphins are mostly hunted or theirmeat, but some are captured and end up in dolphinariums, including the world-amous SeaWorld parks.
This orm o dolphin killing takes place in many places aroundthe world. There are dolphin drive hunts in the Solomon Islands,Peru and the Faroe Islands (a group o islands that lie betweenScotland and Iceland and that belong to Denmark). In the FaroeIslands, its mostly Pilot Whales that are killed or their meat, butdolphins also end up slaughtered. In this case, the animals aredriven onto the beach or dragged there with hooks and thenkilled mercilessly.
The Cove ocuses on a particular dolphin hunt near the towno Taiji in Japan. Every year, more than 2,000 dolphins aredriven into a cove near the town and killed. The documentarylm is directed by ormer National Geographic photographerLouis Psihoyos, and was made secretly throughout 2007 usingunderwater microphones, high-denition cameras disguised asrocks and a camouaged camera crew hidden on headlands. Also appearing in the lm is Ric OBarry, the director o SaveJapan Dolphins coalition and a marine mammal expert. Hetrained dolphins or the popular 1960s TV series Flipper. He
is credited with having started the dolphin entertainmentindustry, but has spent most o his lie ghting against it.
So, what do the people o Taiji (population circa 3,400) thinkabout it? Many eel that they are being unairly singled out.The town o Taiji has a 400-year history o whale and dolphinhunting; and its shermen only catch about 20% o Japansyearly dolphin quota. Town-council chie Katsutoshi Miharatold the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, Almost all the dolphinscaught in Japan are sold or meat near the towns where theyrecaught, and only 1% (about 12) are sold live to aquariums.Masashi Nishimura, manager o the Japan Fisheries Associationsinternational section said, I dont think its a big topic here, hesays. As long as the killing is humane, dolphins are like otheranimals to us.
But or many people, dolphins are special. They are clearly highlyintelligent mammals and they oten orm strong bonds oriendship with humans. Primates such as chimpanzees, gorillasand orang-utans are all protected species. Should these levels oprotection be extended to marine mammals too? Many believethey should.
