The changes will take effect on Sunday, August 25 and are being made with no additional operating or capital costs. “We’ve experienced significant ridership growth in recent years,” said Brent Forsyth, Director of Transit. “Since the implementation of the Georgian College Universal Pass in September 2018, Barrie Transit has seen a 36 per cent increase in ridership. In response to this demand, our staff worked hard to identify a cost- neutral route plan that will enhance the service.” The updated routes were designed using ridership and real-time bus tracking data collected through the on- board automated passenger counters. The route plan provides improved service to an area of the City where Barrie’s buses are frequently at maximum capacity. The expanded Route 100 Blue & Red Express (previously Georgian Express) will operate with peak frequency of 22 minutes. The changes will also optimize routing in other areas of the City by offering improved connections and reduced travel times. Visit barrie.ca/TransitNotices to see the new routes. Order of the Spirit Catcher Award The Order of the Spirit Catcher, established in 2000 (replacing the Civic Award of Merit), is the highest honour bestowed by the City to a volunteer (youth and adult) for outstanding service to our community. The City seeks nominations annually for the Order of the Spirit Catcher Award (19+ years of age) and the Youth Spirit Catcher Award (12–18 years of age). Individuals considered for this award must be residents of Barrie who have: volunteered selflessly; made a significant contribution to the lifestyle of the community; benefited others and brought honour to the City of Barrie, through exceptional achievement. The Order of the Spirit Catcher Award Committee selected William Dwyer for the 2018 Order of the Spirit Catcher and Jake Vaz for the 2018 Youth Spirit Catcher Award. The recipients received the award at a Barrie Community Foundation gala in early November and Council will recognize them at a Council Meeting. Visit barrie.ca/awards to nominate someone today. Applications are being accepted until Friday, September 20, 2019. Temporary Closure of Sunnidale Park Dog Off-Leash Recreation Area September 3, 2019 until late Spring/ early Summer 2020 The Sunnidale Park Dog Off-Leash Recreation Area (DOLRA) will be closed starting September 3, 2019. The closure is required for two reasons: • Construction of two new bridges and a new trail to allow access across Kidd’s Creek. • Following the bridge construction work, the trail will open, but the DOLRA will remain closed to allow for regeneration and restoration of the site. The site needs to close to allow for a rest period, soil and water testing, and park maintenance. Thank you for your understanding and we apologize for the inconvenience. The DOLRA beside the Barrie Molson Centre, located at 555 Bayview Drive, is open for your dog’s enjoyment. For more information, including a list of Frequently Asked Questions, visit barrie.ca/DOLRA.
