KEEPING TIME, A STEADY PULSE,reliable swing - these used to be the bedrock

functions of the jazz drummer. But today's gen-eration of percussionists aren't just time keep-ers. What's more, time itself, in jazz, has under-gone a paradigm shift, become more flexible, changeable and amorphous than it ever was. This Winning Spins highlights albums by twodrummers born in the early 1970s, Adam Cruzand Ari Hoenig, who exemplify the newapproaches to time, rhythm and the drummer'snew roles in the jazz of the 21st Century.

Milestone (Sunnyside) is drummer Cruz'sfirst album as a leader. He's also the composerand arranger of the eight tracks. He is joined byhis rhythm section mate from the Danilo PerezTrio, bassist Ben Street, along with pianistEdward Simon, guitarist Steve Cardenas, tenorsaxophonist Chris Potter and either (4 trackseach) alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón or sopranosaxophonist Steve Wilson. Cruz is an ambitiouscomposer who attempts to balance improvisa-tion with structure, constructing his pieces in anepisodic, multi-linear manner rather than asstraightforward theme-variations-theme songform. Every track is multifarious, with shiftingmoods, dynamics and tempos.

A good example is the opener, "Secret Life,"which begins with a brief drum intro, tattoosand cymbal rides, joined by ringing piano chordsand punctuating bass as Potter's tenor sings asomber melody (contrastingly slower than thedouble-timing beats) that's echoed by Zenón’salto. Egged on by the rhythm section, Potterbuilds an increasingly dramatic improvisationculminating in overblown cries and wails. Thentenor and rhythm decelerate and fade as a med-itative slow line develops from guitar, tenor andalto giving way to traded solos from piano andguitar, the tune finally fading as a piano solo toend. Along the way, Cruz adds and changes tex-tures and colors as well as kinetically shiftingtime and rhythms.

Cruz seems to love setting up unexpectedjuxtapositions and contrasts, and shaking upexpected approaches and sequences. Forinstance, Potter's tenor is often the lead horn onmelody statements, the other sax echoingphrases or commenting, shadow-like. Andthemes or variations of them reappear, withchanged-up rhythms and dynamics, in the midstof pieces, as on "The Gadfly," offering a launch-ing pad for new solos. On "Emje," over a swiftcascara rhythm (it's one of the two Afro-Latinrhythmed pieces) with Zenón, and on "MagicLadder," with Wilson, Cruz's drummingbecomes a full partner, not just accompanying

beats, for the saxophonists. There are also slow, semi-rubato pieces rich

in impressionistic moods, especially"Crepuscular," featuring Potter's deep-tonedtenor, rising briefly to Trane-ish ballad heights, accompanied by a shifting cast of soprano sax, piano and guitar, Cruz adding brushed colorsand Street solid bass counter-lines. With eightdistinctive and fully realized original pieces, strikingly brought to life, Adam Cruz's debutalbum is a triumph for him as a leader and com-poser, as well as a drummer.

Although he's three years younger thanCruz, drummer Ari Hoenig already has a hand-ful of albums as leader under his belt, includingtwo solo CDs where he explored the melodic pos-sibilities of the trap drum set. Lines ofOppression, his latest, is mostly a quartet withTigran Hanasyan, piano; Gilad Hekselman, gui-tar; and either Orlando Le Fleming or ChrisTordini, bass. Six of the ten tracks are Hoenig’scompositions, Hamasyan contributes one, andthere are three standards given an original spin.Thelonious Monk's "Rhythm-A-Ning" flows outof "Rhythm," a solo drum-scat track theme overbrushes followed by piano-guitar exchangesevolving into simultaneous soloing over acceler-ating patterns from sticks to a swirling ending.Hoenig, with mallets, takes the lead melody roleon Bobby Timmons' "Moanin'," then creates

CARMEN LUNDYNEWARK MUSEUM / JUNE 2She was born in Miami into a musical family. Her mother was lead vocalist in a gospelgroup known as the Apostolic Singers. At age twelve, Lundy decided to be a singerherself. After thirty years in the business, she's renowned for her extraordinary vocalprowess and songwriting skill. (She's a gifted painter, too.) On her eleventh recording,Solamente, she arranges, produces and plays every instrument. Lundy's music infus-es the blues and gospel roots of her childhood. She's contributed over fifty self-pennedcompositions that comprise the New Jazz Songbook. Lundy has performed and record-ed with many great musicians including her brother, outstanding bassist CurtisLundy. To see her perform live is a unique and electrifying experience.

GIACOMO GATESCHICO'S HOUSE / JUNE 4 There can be no doubt that Gates is an authentic jazz vocalist who's forged his ownstyle. Heavily steeped in the traditions of vocal improvisers his personal approachdraws most heavily from the bebop-rooted masters like Babs Gonzales, EddieJefferson and Jon Hendricks. Blessed with a mellifluous full-bodied voice, extraordi-nary rhythmic precision and an unerring sense of lyricism, Gate's total command ofthe vernacular, boundless creativity and passion set him apart from other vocalists. The only child of a dressmaker and a welder with a penchant for big band jazz, he lefthis Bridgeport, CT home in 1975 and headed to Alaska, where he spent fourteenyears. With four CD's under his belt, Gates has definitely proven himself. Asserts JonHendricks, "Not many people can master this music, but Giacomo Gates has."

CHUCK REDDSHANGHAI JAZZ / JUNE 8Percussionist Redd began his professional career in 1980 at age 21, when he joinedguitarist Charlie Byrd's trio. That same year, he also became part of the all-star GreatGuitars group, which highlighted the brilliance of Byrd, Barney Kessel and HerbEllis. Equally adapt on drums and vibes, Redd played in Mel Torme's quintet from1991 to1996 and eventually led his own recording debut as a leader, Stomp, Look &Listen. This Arbors Records recording artist's most recent release, Common Thread, has been received with warm praise. Noted for his vigor and melodic sparkle, he's per-formed alongside numerous other talents, including Dizzy Gillespie, TommyFlanagan, and Ray Brown. At this Jersey gig, Redd will be joined by the award-win-ning Italian jazz pianist Rossano Sportiello, whose own mentor is Barry Harris.

MIMI JONESMAKEDA / JUNE 9Multi-talented bassist, vocalist and composer Miriam Sullivan (aka Mimi Jones) hastransformed herself from side woman to leader. For years, this NYC native has beenan integral member in Tia Fuller's band - and has shared the stage with the likes ofLionel Hampton, Roy Hargrove, Rachel Z, Sean Jones, Kenny Barron, KevinMahogany and Joshua Redman. Jones' elegant sound is an eclectic mix of genresbased in a strong jazz foundation that still leave room for funky bass grooves, worldbeat rhythms, and gentle textures. Known for, as one critic put it, "making magicsounds on the bass" and for creating "rhythmically driving bass lines," her inspiringdebut release, A New Day is bursting with original compositions, moving seamlesslyfrom one song to another and adding the warmth of her sultry voice.

CHIHIRO YAMANAKAIRIDIUM / JUNE 30A celebrity back home in Japan, where each of her CDs and DVDs has spent consid-erable time atop jazz sales charts, pianist Chihiro is truly a media star whose name isfamiliar to millions. That's not yet the case hereabouts. But a stint in the DIVA bigband, along with a long-term Universal Music contract and a series of convincingappearances at major festivals around the country, have enhanced her reputation. ABerklee grad with an abundance of keyboard technique, she's adept at composingpieces that range from hummable ditties with a childlike simplicity to stormersdemonstrating her fondness for the Bud Powell tradition. To mark the release of herlatest CD Forever Begins (Verve/Universal), already #1 on Japanese charts, herrhythm mates will be bassist Ben Williams and drummer Pete Van Nostrand. PB

EDDIE HENDERSONSMOKE / JUNE 10 AND 11He's is one of just a handful of jazz musicians who has also studied and practiced med-icine. It's not surprising to learn that trumpeter and flugelhornist Henderson did hisresidency in psychiatry with the renowned pianist Denny Zeitlin. But Henderson'smusical roots go back even further (he once dared to tell Miles Davis, a family friend, that he played trumpet wrong!) and he was a competitive ice skater during his teenyears. Long focused on his music career, Henderson played fusion in the 1970s andappeared on recordings headed up by Herbie Hancock, Charles Earland, Gary Bartzand Donald Brown. He returned to the hard bop style during the 1990s, cutting aseries of acclaimed albums under his own name. BILLY HARTVILLAGE VANGUARD / JUNE 7-12A drummer who can calibrate his playing with precision to accommodate any musicalsituation, it's not surprising that Billy Hart has played with Jimmy Smith, ShirleyHorn, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Hank Jones and Herbie Hancock. He's mastered jazztraditions, from swing to the avant-garde; and as he enters his 70s, he's at the top ofhis game. Hart is, along with bassist Cecil McBee, the locomotive, driving force behindthat hardest of hard bop veteran bands, The Cookers; but at the Vanguard, he's lead-ing his quartet, a surprisingly star-studded yet subtle group featuring two of the moreinfluential players on today's scene: pianist Ethan Iverson of The Bad Plus and in-demand tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, plus bassist Ben Street. GK

JIM SNIDEROSMALLS / JUNE 10 AND 11 Here's a unique chance to hear a cohesive quartet with a fresh concept perform musicthat's been developed over the course of two albums, one of them just out: Interface(Savant). A sought-after alto saxophonist on the Big Apple scene (both big bands andsmall) since he arrived in the 1980s, Snidero calls his current band (guitarist PaulBollenback, bassist Paul Gill and drummer McClenty Hunter) a "transition" awayfrom his roots in bebop and hard-bop towards a more inclusive style he's dubbed"warm jazz." To further that concept, he's written all the tunes on Interface, fashion-ing half of them for Bollenback's acoustic guitar; the other half, with a harder edge, for electric guitar. The results are gratifying, warm but also intense. GK

CHRIS DINGMANJAZZ GALLERY / JUNE 18A rising-star vibraphonist, Dingman has already made significant instrumental con-tributions to projects devised by such leaders as Steve Lehman, Harris Eisenstadt,Jen Shyu, Adam Rudolph and Noah Baerman. His own compositional creativity is onfull display with Waking Dreams, an exquisite fourteen-movement suite being issuedthis month. Its harmonies, rhythms and textures reflect Chris' abiding interest in non-Western musics. His ears were opened even further during performance tours ofVietnam and India in the company of Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. He's alsoamong the select few grads of the Monk Institute program. We'll follow his continuedsonic adventures - lyrical yet logical - with keen interest. Among his bandmates at theGallery: Loren Stillman (alto), Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet), Fabian Almazan (key-boards), Chris Tordini (bass) and Justin Brown (percussion). PB

LEE KONITZBLUE NOTE / JUNE 1-5One of the only two alto saxophonists who emerged as modern players in the post-WWIIyears not under the spell of Charlie Parker (the other was Paul Desmond), Konitz epit-omized the "cool" jazz aesthetic, both with Lennie Tristano and on the Birth of the Coolsides with the Miles Davis Nonet. But Konitz's style has evolved and developed beyondboth the Tristano school and the "cool," as his playing has become more emotionally andsonically dynamic. Konitz enjoys varied situations, from duos to large ensembles. Here,he's leading a quartet with guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Gary Peacock and drummerJoey Baron. And it's a (bargain) double-bill, filled out by drummer Francisco Mela'sQuintet, with Chris Potter on sax and Ben Monder, guitar. GK

KENNY GARRETTDIZZY'S / JUNE 28-JULY 3Alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett is that rare commodity in jazz: a musician who can stirup an audience to a fervor usually reserved for rock or pop stars. When he plays "HappyPeople," his surprising crowd-pleaser that sometimes stretches on (like Paul Gonsalves'famous "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" solo from Ellington at Newport 1956) overa quarter hour, he excites listeners up to a fever pitch. Garrett has a jazz appeal thatowes as much to a serious continuation of the legacies of John Coltrane and Miles Davisas it does to his undeniably rock/pop star-like charisma. And with his young-at-heartband (pianist Benito Gonzalez, bassist Nat Reeves, drummer Ronald Bruner), he isn'tbeyond incorporating hip-hop elements too. GK

MILTON NASCIMENTOROSE HALL / JUNE 24Brazilian singer with the ethereal voice, Milton Nascimento, will take the stage at Jazzat Lincoln Center courtesy of Mark Morganelli's Jazz Arts Forum with funding from theStahl Foundation. His sound is more "world music" than jazz, per se. He blends hismusical influences, including Brazilian and African folk melodies, European classicalmusic and the Brazilian bossa nova. He even crossed over into rock, working withDuran Duran in 1993. His international breakthrough was in 1974 when he appearedon jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter's acclaimed album Native Dancer. He also has col-laborated with Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones and Pat Metheny. He'll be singing in hisfamous falsetto in English and Portuguese with Banda 4: Lincoln Continentino, GastãoVilleroy, Lincoln Cheib and Wilson Lopes. YE

SHANE ENDSLEYJOE'S PUB / JUNE 1Then The Other, it's called - a new CD (on the Low Electrical Records label!) creditedto trumpeter Endsley and his group, which he's dubbed The Music Band. In the past,Endsley has played with Ravi Coltrane, Tim Berne, Ben Allison and Chris Speed. Buthe's best known, at this point, for membership in Kneebody, a jazz/rock/funk quintetthat won an enthusiastic local following by tearing things up at the 2011 WinterJazzfest downtown. By contrast, The Music Band (whose other members are pianistCraig Taborn, bassist Matt Brewer and percussionist Ted Poor) aims for what Endsleyterms "easy digestibility," based on "material that doesn't require too much head-scratching" but which "leads into some lyrical improvising." This disc's ten highlydiverse tracks, all Endsley originals, definitely reward repeated listening. PB

RAVI COLTRANE BIRDLAND / JUNE 21-25Ravi has put together an impressive career, considering the challenges he faced - notonly by in following his famous father into jazz but also playing tenor and soprano sax-ophones. He was just two years old when John died. Alice Coltrane raised him by her-self, exposing him along the way to a great deal of music. Ravi made a transition intojazz during his twenties, initially honing his craft by working with veterans ElvinJones, Steve Coleman and others before releasing his own debut CD, Moving Pictures,in 1998. Ravi is progressively developing his own voice on his instruments, even as heexhibits his father's love of exploring a diversity of styles. Ravi took part in the recentBlue Note 7 tribute to greats once associated with that storied label and he has his ownforthcoming Blue Note CD slated for release later this year. KD

ARKANSAS-BORN AND TEXAS-REARED,singer/pianist/songwriter Bob Dorough has

built a remarkable resumé over the years. He'sheadlined at many of the world's hipper clubsand jazzfests. His musical associates haveranged from Charlie Parker to Sugar RayRobinson. Lenny Bruce dug him. New YorkTimes crossword puzzle creators know hisname. On the other hand, literally millions ofyounger Americans who, after years of Saturdaymorning exposure to ABC-TV's "SchoolhouseRock" videos, know Bob's voice - but not hisname. Once, he even set the wording of a fabriccare label to music and made it swing. AndDorough (who stresses the first syllable of hissurname, in case you're wondering) is the onlyvocalist ever heard on a Miles Davis album.

Yet Bob's not a guy content to sit comfortablyat home in northeastern Pennsylvania and rem-inisce. Instead, he's coming up with fresh newsongs, guesting on other artists’ CDs, taking hismusic on the road - for example, a 2002 StateDepartment-sponsored tour through seven LatinAmerican countries - and enthralling a wholenew generation of admirers.

And here's some welcome news. "Devil MayCare," a film documenting Dorough's life andtimes, will soon be released. (For a somewhatwhimsical preview, check devilmaycarethemovie.com.) "Shooting has been completed andeverything ought to be wrapped up by the end ofsummer," notes Bob. "At the moment, the pro-ducers are searching for some more archivalfootage. But hey, there weren't all that manymovie cameras in the hands of jazz loversback then."

It may be as a songwriter that Dorough hashad the broadest impact over the decades. Histunes have been recorded by vocalists as diverseas Carol Fredette, Carol Sloane, DarrylSherman, Jamie Cullum, Meredith d'Ambrosio,Madeline Eastman, Mary Foster Conklin, DianaKrall, Mel Torme, Marlena Shaw, TerriThornton and Mark Murphy - as well as a hostof instrumentalists, from Miles Davis onward.("Devil May Care" and "Blue Xmas," the latterincluding Bobs' squint of a vocal, were recordedby Miles in 1962; while "Nothing Like You" wasa track on Sorcerer.)

Much of the appeal of songs Dorough haspenned over the decades lies in their lyrics, which often reflect a certain warm sentimentali-ty but contain nary an ounce of treacle. Bob'sdelivery often leavens the emotion with a repeat-ed phrase here, an enthusiastic snarl there. What's more, those lyrics encapsulate his highlypositive outlook on the world around him.Underlying the words, meanwhile, aremelodies which frequently depart from con-ventional forms.

For example, "I've Got Just AboutEverything" follows the A/A/B/A format familiarfrom "I Got Rhythm," except that it's extendedover a total of sixty-four bars rather than themore conventional thirty-two. "You're TheDangerous Type" (one of what Bob terms his

BOB DOROUGH OBVIOUSLY, A LOVER OF LIFE

By Paul Blair

"extravagant love songs") is another A/A/B/Atune - but he's added what he terms a built-intag to stretch the total number of bars fromsixty-four to seventy-two.

And "Nothing Like You"? "OK," he reports,"that one departs most radically from standardform. Of course, the structure of my melody waspretty much dictated by Fran Landesman's lyric. That's always been true whenever I've collabo-rated with Fran, who's really a great poet. Whenshe mailed her words to me, I put her sheet onthe piano and tried to let the music follow thelyric. This was the first song I co-wrote with her, soon after we met in 1960, and tackling it tookquite a while. Eventually, I decided to take a fewliberties with her words by repeating some ofthe phrases. 'Nothing like you, nothing like you, nothing like you has ever been seen before.' Andthat's how it came out."

Once fans begin looking, they discover loadsof Bob scattered on records for a variety oflabels. Three now-deleted Dorough CDs issuedon the Blue Note label (Right On My Way Homeand Too Much Coffee, Man, along with a delight-ful collaboration with Dave Frishberg entitledWho's On First?) would make a great Mosaicreissue package one of these days. Live At TheIridium (Arbors Records) documents the brunch-es Bob used to host each Sunday in Midtown.Memorial Charlie Parker (Philology), cut duringa live show in 1983, has Bob memorably mixingit up with Phil Woods. Also still available, if youpersist, are three early recordings; Devil MayCare (1956), Yardbird Suite (also 1956) and JustAbout Everything (1966) contain some of Bob'sinitial treatments of originals that have sincebecome classics.

"My trio's going to Norway in August for gigsin several cities. Then I'll be taking part in the2011 Celebration of the Arts festival inDelaware Water Gap on the weekend afterLabor Day. This year, they decided to honor me,so a lot of other performers will be doing mytunes. I guess I'll be doing some sitting-in, too.

"You know, in my youth," muses Bob, "I usedto buy nearly every jazz record that came out -Bird, Miles, Monk, Bud and everyone else - andthen my gang of friends and I would enjoy themtogether. But nowadays, with so many newalbums and players around, I can't keep up withall of it." Moving smoothly through his eight-ies, Dorough is himself hard for others tokeep up with.

Bob Dorough plays and sings at Saint Peter'sLutheran Church on June 29.

JAY

LEONHART ALWAYS TELLING STORIES

By Ken Dryden

JAY LEONHART WAS BORN INTO Avery musical family. His parents and all of

his siblings played piano. "At the age of six," herecalls, "I was already studying piano atPeabody Institute in Baltimore. My brother andI decided that we didn't want to play classicalmusic, just jazz, country music and rhythmicstuff. We took up banjos, guitars and mandolins- and we were a rather successful duo until oneday when I heard the bass playing behind us. Ifell in love with it and decided that was theinstrument I wanted to play. It looked simpleand easy, I understood the basics almost rightaway. I was thirteen and put everything elsedown to start playing the bass."

His focus on jazz intensified and, within ayear, Leonhart was playing bass professionallyin a Baltimore Dixieland band. "Ray Brown wasthe major influence on my bass playing. When Ifirst heard him, at thirteen or fourteen, hebecame my mentor, whether he liked it or not. Ilistened to everything he played, his sounds andlines, how he handled himself. For about eightyears, I tried to turn myself into Ray Brown, butwhen that didn't work, I learned I had to bemyself. I studied with Ray and Oscar Petersonat their school (The Advanced School ofContemporary Music in Toronto) in 1960 when Iwas twenty. Then I went to Berklee. I moved toNew York City in 1962, then traveled around, then went back to Baltimore. I still had somegrowing up to do. I returned to New York in 1968and I was lucky, because I've worked ever since."

Soon after his return to New York, Leonhartwas well on his way to becoming a first callbassist, thanks in part to the generous spirit ofbass master Milt Hinton, one of the busiest all-around session men and a gifted performer."Milt was very sweet to me. I mostly saw him inJim & Andy's. If there was a gig he couldn'tmake, he'd throw it my way. He was a wonderfulfriend for my whole life. My wife Donna and Ijust loved him and Mona." Leonhart penned aheartfelt tribute to Hinton called "The Judge,"which he premiered at the legend's 80th birth-day celebration concert at Town Hall in 1990and later recorded on his own CD, Galaxies andPlanets.

Leonhart is best known for his whimsicallyrics, which often relate stories about thingsthat have happened to him. Leonhart recalls,"'Little Henry' was my first storytelling song. Itwas about a man escaping from the Baltimorejail. My father took me down to see the hole he'ddug in the courtyard. I was very impressed by itand twenty-five years later, when I was thirty-five, I started to write about it. I enjoyed creat-ing the rhyming verse and put it into a sort ofrap style, but with melody. I was actually writ-ing rap before anybody else was! Then I started

to listen to Steely Dan, Dave Frishberg and JoniMitchell. I was very influenced by them. Theywere writing songs about themselves, life, thingsthey came across. I realized we all had our ownoriginal points of view, if we're not afraid toexpress them. So I started writing songs aboutthings and have done it every since."

Several of Leonhart's songs are expected byaudiences, while other artists have recorded afew of them. "Tony Bennett says, 'You have tosing the one about the airplane ("Me andLenny," which is about the bassist sharing aflight with Leonard Bernstein) every night. That's your "San Francisco."' That's my bestknown song. Audra McDonald picked up ‘BeatMy Dog’ and it's since become my most recordedsong. 'Robert Frost,' 'Louis Bellson' and'Problem' (the latter written on 'I Got Rhythm'changes) have been recorded by lots of other peo-ple. Some have been used in odd places, like onThai television shows, and I get the royalties."But the composition process is tedious forLeonhart: "It takes a long time. I'll write thestory first, then start setting it to music. Afterplaying it awhile, maybe I'll find I need to short-en it or say something more clearly or changethe accent. It takes me three months to write areally good song."

Leonhart prefers to work new tunes out onhis instruments. "I compose on both piano andbass. If I'm thinking of a group and more melod-ic, complex harmonies, I'll sit at the piano. I canimagine them on the bass but they come to lifeon the piano and I can hear them better. I com-pose more melodically on piano. I work withProLogic to make my newest record at home. I'mputting the bass against some simple rhythmictracks and it sounds nice. I'll bring in somesoloists as well."

The New York City music scene has changedquite a bit for Leonhart in recent years. "There'svery little commercial studio work for me any-more. But I've been able to save some money soI don't need to do it. I play concerts and gigs andmake an occasional jazz record. But I'm gettingto play, practice and write a lot more."

Jay Leonhart appears at the Kitano on June3-4 with pianist John Colianni and drummerBill Goodwin.

Break out the bubblyIn case you're wondering How Long Has ThisBeen Going On? (Harbinger), besides celebratingthe release of a brand-new CD, this monthpianist/vocalist Barbara Carroll marks two mile-stones - the golden anniversary of her debutrecording, and 65 years as a proud resident ofthe Big Apple. Barbara grew up in Worcester,Mass. and later enrolled in New EnglandConservatory. "I didn't stay there long," sherecalls. "I was playing jazz in the clubs in Bostontill 3:00 A M. so I couldn't make it to class in themorning." Female jazz musicians were a raritywhen Barbara moved to New York, "The musi-cians were great. There was a prejudgment thatyou couldn't play. You had to prove yourself, then it was OK." Before recording under her ownname, Barbara was on plenty of disks as a side-woman: "Let the chick piano player have eightbars in the bridge, that sort of thing," she says. Her latest CD, How Long Has This Been GoingOn?, was recorded live: "That's always a kick. It's what you see is what you get, and that can berather dangerous. It's different from in the stu-dio, where they have so many different devicesto help you along." You can hear Barbara inaction at the Algonquin every Sunday throughJune 19, at the Allen Room on June 8 withMichael Feinstein, and at Dizzy's on June 21-26."There's nothing I wouldn't play if I like it. I wel-come the freedom of expanding and exploringhorizons: That's the essence of jazz," she says.

Kick that blockVocalist Dee Cassella grew up listening to herbig brother, saxophonist Joe Berlin, practicinghis ax. He showed her a few piano chords so shecould play along with him, but she felt too self-conscious to enjoy it. Dee loved to sing alongwith the radio, though only when she was in thecar by herself. "I would scat to music as a teen,"she says, “though I never knew what I wasdoing. Jazz was a part of me that I took forgranted, but only if I was alone." A musicalcareer wasn't a goal, but Dee was interested indumping the discomfort that overcame herwhenever she aimed to make a sound. She tookvoice lessons for seven years, switching teachersand struggling with stage fright even in low-pressure settings like living room recitals.Eventually, she turned to Eye MovementDesensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) ther-

apy. "I thought it was pretty weird stuff, butwith so many educated people involved I thoughtthere must be something to it," Dee says. Itworked so well in helping her overcome her blockthat she began studying with the likes of MarkMurphy, Dena DeRose, Carol Fredette andMadeline Eastman, started sitting in, and thenmade her professional debut as a leader in 2004."I was getting my feet wet a little at a time," Deesays. Singing is a "wonderful way to end the lastsegment of my life. It's the deepest therapy I'veever done - I take risks and when I'm uncomfortable, I know I'm going to grow." Jointhe adventure when Dee plays at Miles Café onJune 11.

All in the FamilyOne of saxophonist Claire Daly's favorite memo-ries of growing up in Yonkers was a visit fromher father's first cousin, Mary Joyce. "She wassuch a free spirit, the most jazz personality I canimagine - an improviser all the way," Clairesays. "She was different from anyone I'd evermet. Though I was only eight or nine, I connect-ed to her right away." Mary had moved toJuneau, Alaska, in 1929, then in 1935 set out tobecome the first nonnative person to travelbetween Juneau and Fairbanks by dogsled. Thetrip took more than three months, and is docu-mented in the book Mary Joyce: From Taku toFairbanks, 1,000 Miles by Dogteam, by MaryAnne Greiner. "I was so inspired by her story, Ithought I'd have to write music about her,"Claire says. With that in mind, she composed thetunes for her new CD, The Mary Joyce Project:Nothing to Lose, in collaboration with pianistSteve Hudson. "At the beginning, we talked a lotabout her. We thought about what inspired andmotivated her," Claire says. "The music is notabout her, it's a gift to her. I want to hip theworld to her, she was like Amelia Earhart, buton the ground." In May, Claire debuted themusic at the Juneau Jazz and Classics festival."I want people to feel a part of the story, to beinspired by it, to feel like anything is possible,"she says. Claire found the project challenging, but "it was worth it. This feels like the beginningof a new phase of my own life. I'm really glad Idid this; whatever comes of it is gravy." Claireand her band, including bass player Mary AnnMcSweeney, will celebrate the release of TheMary Joyce Project: Nothing to Lose on the lateshift at Dizzy's on June 21-25.

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at your

favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.

Spanky Davis told me about a joint he used to work in Chicago where theband played for singers and comedians. One of them, comedian Jackie Curtis, foundhimself working with a substitute drummer one night. During one of his stories, hesaid "...and the car ran off the road and hit a tree," and he gestured to the drum-mer, who hit a rim shot. Jackie said. "No, a big tree." And the drummer gave hima snare roll and a thump on the bass drum. "No," said Jackie, "it was a BIGtree...with cymbals!"

The late jazz saxophonist Arnie Lawrence once turned up on a record date, looked at his music and commented, "This is the first time in a year that I've playedwith my eyes open!"

Our pick: DARYL SHERMANFor years, Daryl Sherman entertained afternoons inthe lounge at the Waldorf-Astoria, ensconced on thepiano bench, aided only by her ten fingers, a micro-phone and an encyclopedic command of the AmericanSongbook - both jazz and pop volumes. From Ellingtonto Gershwin, Bob Dorough to Bob Dylan, Broadway toHollywood and 52nd Street, Sherman sings them allwith wit and panache, her petite ingénue soprano voicecapable of conveying surprising depth and nuance. Those years alone at the piano enabled her to hone herjazz skills, making her one of the few genuine jazz-cabaret singer-pianists of our era.

Our pick: JD ALLEN"Wasting notes is a waste of time," says tenor saxo-phonist J.D. Allen, who's emerged as a champion of thepared-down saxophone trio tradition forged by SonnyRollins in the 1950s. A Detroit native, now 38, who wasa prolific sideman in the Big Apple into the early2000s, Allen has achieved artistic focus with a winningformula of concise, often epigrammatic trio music, delivered in small, heady doses he calls "jukebox jazz."On his new Victory!, the third JD Allen Trio album forthe Sunnyside label, with bassist Gregory August anddrummer Rudy Royston, the exhilarating results com-bine jazz freedom with R&B immediacy.

And now she's back in the USA, hostingNPR's Jazz Set on radio and carrying on in the great, classic jazz vocal tradition of Billie, Sarah and Ella. Ascreatively adventurous as she is stylish, Bridgewaterhas applied her sultry, ebony-toned voice to material asdiverse as Ellingtonia, African numbers and HoraceSilver's songbook.

Our pick: ROBERTA GAMBARINIThese days, we're awash in a plethora of female jazzvocalists, many of them American, who are well under50, an age most of our classic jazz singers have morethan attained. But Roberta Gambarini, who came herefrom her native Italy in the late 1990s, may be the mosttalented of them all. Just listen to her version of TaddDameron's "If You Could See Me Now" with the DizzyGillespie All-Star Big Band. It almost makes you forgetSarah Vaughan's indelible take. Gambarini has revi-talized the classic jazz vocal tradition of Sarah andElla, while also mastering vocalese beyond Annie Ross.James Moody was an enthusiastic booster. That HankJones both recorded and toured with her says it all.

Our pick: WINARD HARPERFollowing in the exemplary tradition of Art Blakey andMax Roach, drummer Winard Harper has functionedas a spark plug in any group he's been part of, as wellas a band leader with a nose for talent - plus the abili-ty to develop it in his sidemen. And like Blakey andRoach, he has an omnivorous taste for polyrhythms inall their varieties. Like them, he's delved into Africaand incorporated percussion instruments from thatcontinent into his drum kit. Seeing and hearing himmove effortlessly from snare, toms and cymbals to achain of small hollow logs and back again, all withoutlosing a beat, is what time is all about.

Our pick: RUFUS REIDThe enthusiastic smile on his face, while holding hisbass, on the cover portrait of his new album, Hues of aDifferent Blue (Motema) by his Out Front group, is anaccurate reflection of the veteran jazzman's approachto his art. During the final two decades of the last cen-tury, the multi-tasking Reid co-headed the prestigiousjazz studies program at William Paterson University inNew Jersey while also managing to tour and gig with awho's who of jazz greats - from Dexter Gordon and J.J.Johnson to Dizzy Gillespie. Singer and harmonicat RonSunshine bills his group as "Jazz, Blues and FunkyR&B," an updated approach to the swing, jump bluesand standards of the 30s, 40s and 50s. Our pick: VIJAY IYERWith a resumé that includes a Yale science degree atage 20 and a Ph.D. from UC-Berkeley, to call pianistVijay Iyer a superior intellect would not be a stretch.Intelligence illuminates his work, too, especially hisacclaimed 2010 CD, Solo (ACT), on which he reimag-ines the tunes of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk,as well as playing originals. A (Southeast Asian)Indian-American, Iyer also probes his cultural heritagein the trio CD Tithra (ACT), featuring Indian musi-cians playing tabla and Carnatic guitar. RED HOOK JAZZ FESTIVAL

Our pick: WEE TRIOWhile the lineup suggests chamber jazz, given JamesWestfall's vibes, Dan Loomis' acoustic bass and JaredSchonig's trap drums set, the Wee Trio is no pared-down update of the Modern Jazz Quartet. While theMJQ often based its work on European classical mod-els like Bach for inspiration, the Wee Trio is more like-ly to draw on the late punk rocker Kurt Cobain forideas. In that respect, it's closer to another "acoustic"trio, the piano-bass-drums Bad Plus than to the jazzvibes tradition. The Wee guys take from their rockbackgrounds and memories, then transform theirmaterial utilizing some extraordinary jazz chops.

But Taylor is much morethan a Django admirer; he ranges far and wide withinthe basic acoustic/amplified guitar style he prefers. He's also entertainingly charismatic as a performer, bringing the virtuosity of pianists like Art Tatum andBud Powell to the guitar. Inbetween, Palmieri created his own fusion of salsa, Afro-Latin and jazz while attacking the piano with the verveof an Art Tatum, the abandon of a Cecil Taylor and thequirky harmonic sense of a Thelonious Monk. For awhile, Palmieri seemed enamored with the electric key-board, but he's returned lately to the grand piano.Always fiery and unpredictable, he exemplifies the"sound of surprise."

HOT JAZZ/COOL GARDEN CONCERT SERIES

Our pick: BRIA SKONBERGA member of trad jazz's youth corps, the still 20-some-thing Bria Skonberg isn't your typical Dixieland musi-cian. For one thing, she hails from Chilliwack, BritishColumbia (no, not Scandinavia) although she doesresemble the blonde in ABBA more than your usualjazz trumpeter. For the last decade, Skonberg has beena star fixture on the trad jazz festival circuit, leadingher own bands, playing with Mighty Aphrodite (an all-female Dixieland band she co-founded) or appearing asa solo trumpeter and singer in the Satchmo style, morein the tradition of the girl band singers of the SwingEra.

Our pick: BOB SEELEYJazz traditions never really die; if you know where tofind them, they don't even fade away. Bob Seeley, nowan octogenarian, is undoubtedly the dean of a jazz stylethat flourished over 70 years ago: boogie-woogie piano.A Detroit native, Seeley became enraptured by MeadeLux Lewis, the great boogie-woogie pianist, andbefriended him in the 1940s. Though Seeley is indemand at international boogie-woogie festivals, he'sdefinitely no one-trick pony. He not only carries onLewis's legacy, but is also adept at a wide range ofearly jazz piano styles, from ragtime and stride toswing, and enjoyed friendships over the decades withboth Eubie Blake and Art Tatum.

NYC UNDEAD JAZZFEST

Our pick: ANDREW D’ANGELOAn astringent-toned alto saxophonist who can swoop, wail and glide like a disciple of Eric Dolphy, but with aswing or R&B musician's sense of how to connect andentertain, Andrew D'Angelo was a key member ofdrummer Matt Wilson's Quartet, on both alto and hisvery distinctive bass clarinet. A part of theEither/Orchestra in its early years, D'Angelo, havingrecovered from brain surgery this year, celebrated inMarch by unveiling his own big band, with Wilsonreturning the favor on drums. The band received ravereviews for D'Angelo's idiosyncratic, prickly tunes andarrangements, and he'll lead it at this event.

JUNE 24-25Syracuse, NYInfo and Tickets: www.syracusejazzfest.com, 800-234-4797. Al Chez, Average White Band, Brothers of Funk Big Band,Felix Cavaliere Rascals, Return To Forever IV, RobertCray Band, Sheryl Bailey, Vic Juris.

Our pick: SHERYL BAILEYA guitarist who maintains a full schedule of performingand teaching (Berklee College of Music, authorship ofguitar technique books), Sheryl Bailey comes out of theWes Montgomery tradition, achieving a similarly richtone and lyrical approach. However, she favors long, angular lines, like Pat Martino's, more thanMontgomery's chordal approach. She displays severaldifferent facets of her playing on her most recent CDs.Last year's A New Promise (MCG) is a tribute to thelate Emily Remler with a big band, while 2011's For AllThose Living (Pure Music) features the Sheryl Bailey 4with underrated pianist Jim Ridl. At this fest, she'llduet with guitarist Vic Juris.

Our pick: STEFON HARRISAn adventuresome vibes and marimba player whoseown albums have ranged from reinterpretations of less-er known Ellingtonia to his hip-hop influenced quintetBlackout, Stefon Harris is also a participant in specialprojects, most recently with the San Francisco JazzCollective. Here he'll be part of a new project that hasalready spawned a CD and future film documentary:Ninety Miles (Concord). Along with saxophonist DavidSanchez and trumpeter Christian Scott, Harris record-ed the project in Havana with two different Cubanrhythm sections. Our pick: BILLY HARPER Once you've heard tenor saxophonist Billy Harper solo, you'll never forget him. He doesn't so much play as tes-tify, pushing out notes and galvanizing cries in a big, bruising tone and timbre that's in the same richnessorbit as Sonny Rollins. Harper's was the fervid tenorsax voice of Gil Evans' longtime Sweet Basil New Yorkbig band and, more recently, a key soloist in CharlesTolliver's large ensemble. These days, he's part of thatbrawny sextet/septet of veteran hard boppers known asThe Cookers. But at this series catering to dancers,he'll be guest soloist with the Harlem RenaissanceOrchestra. Expect him to conjure up the spirit of swingtenors like Ben Webster and Herschel Evans.

Our pick: WILLIE JONES IIIAlthough he's a member of the Young Lions generationof straightahead jazz musicians who came of agetoward the end of the last century, drummer Jones'musical roots lie in hard swinging bebop and hard bop.An early teacher was Albert "Tootie" Heath of theHeath Brothers; and one of his first jobs that made abig impression was with vibist Milt Jackson, to whomswinging was as natural as breathing. Jones acquiredsome Afro-Latin versatility playing with ArturoSandoval, and was later a key member of RoyHargrove's bands for almost a decade. He'll bring aquartet to this series, where he's one of three drum-mer-leaders being featured.

PENNSYLVANIA JAZZ SOCIETY JAZZFEST

Our pick: CHRISTIAN MCBRIDEHe's collaborated with Queen Latifah, played in Sting'sband and boasts a discography as extensive as that ofany bassist in jazz; yet Christian McBride won't hit 40until next year. He was still a teenager when he firstburst onto the jazz scene, managing to record or tourwith a who's who - from Herbie Hancock and ChickCorea to Pat Metheney and Diana Krall. He also playsfunky electric bass, inspired by another of his heroes, soul man James Brown. He'll probably pull out thatelectric instrument for at least one number at this gigwith his quintet Inside Straight, which also featurespianist Eric Reed, vibist Warren Wolf, saxophonistSteve Wilson and drummer Carl Allen.

Our pick: DAVID BINNEYA fixture on the New York jazz scene for three decades, alto saxophonist David Binney remains an adventur-ous musician who defies easy categorization, playing inmany musical camps, but always with his own, distinc-tive sound: a coruscating tone applied to solos that risein dramatic and dynamic arcs. As a composer-leader,Binney has written ambitious pieces for larger ensem-bles that point to new directions. But at this festival,he'll be leading the quartet he has been bringing intothe 55 Bar in Greenwich Village for years: keyboardistJacob Sacks, bassist Thomas Morgan and drummerDan Weiss.

JULY 6-AUGUST 31Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Mt. Vernon, Queens, NY Info and Tickets: www.jazzmobile.org, 212-866-3616. Our pick: RAY MANTILLA It's no surprise that Ray Mantilla is known as "TheComplete Percussionist." Born in the Bronx in 1934,Mantilla first gained notice on the jazz scene on congaswith Herbie Mann in 1960. But Mantilla also plays ahost of other percussion instruments, including tim-bales, trap set and bongos. He was a charter member ofMax Roach's M'Boom percussion group and has workedas often with jazz musicians (ranging from RandyWeston and Muhal Richard Abrams to Billy Taylor andMose Allison) as in salsa or Afro-Cuban bands.Although his ensembles and recordings feature loads ofjazz musicians, he prefers to call his output "Latin jazzwith authentic Latino rhythms."

JAZZMOBILE SUMMERFEST

Our pick: JON-ERIK KELLOIn the trad jazz and neo-swing circles where trum-peter-cornetist Jon-Erik Kellso usually plies his trade(Vince Giordano's Nighthawks, the Gully Low JazzBand), he's known for his lyrical and melodic bent, as aplayer who sings on and tells stories with his horn. It'snot surprising that he recorded a couple of albums withthat supreme lyricist of the instrument, the late RubyBraff. Kellso has one of the most unique, and long-run-ning gigs in the Big Apple, as he and guitarist MattMunesteri are the core of the Ear Regulars at the EarInn on West Spring Street every Sunday evening. Atthis Keystone State event, Kellso will lead his Bixtet.

Our pick: AARON WEINSTEINWhen Weinstein released his first recording at age 19,veteran jazz critic Nat Hentoff heralded it as marking"the rebirth of hot jazz violin." Now Aaron, currently inhis mid-20s, is a star on the neo-swing circuit. He'salready been playing with that paragon of swingrhythm guitar, Bucky Pizzarelli for a decade. OnBucky's latest album, Back in the Saddle Again (Arbors Records), Weinstein slips right into a BobWills/Western Swing groove. In high school, the preco-cious jazz violinist led a Stephane Grappelli tributetrio. At the Swing! Swing! Swing! concert in this series,Weinstein will be the junior member of an octet led byBucky.

CARAMOOR JAZZ FESTIVAL

Our pick: MIDIRI BROTHERSIf Joe and Paul Midiri feel a kinship to another pair ofsiblings in jazz history, it must be to Jimmy andTommy Dorsey. The Midiris came of age in New Jersey, next to the Dorsey's home state of Pennsylvania, butover a half century later. As neo-swing musicians, theyplay the same style of jazz as the Dorseys did. JoeMidiri, like Jimmy Dorsey, is a clarinetist and saxo-phonist, while Paul Midiri plays trombone, like TommyDorsey, although his principal instruments are themallet ones, i.e., vibes, xylophone, marimba. As aresult, the Midiri Brothers Sextet at this fest shouldconjure memories of Benny Goodman's sextets withLionel Hampton.

Our pick: EDMAR CASTANEDAThe harp has played a rather peripheral role in jazzhistory until now. But that may be changing with theemergence of Edmar Castaneda. Unlike earlier jazzharpists, Castaneda plays el arpa llanera, a smaller, wooden Columbian folk instrument. What's more, heplays it with such virtuosity that he has made it aviable jazz instrument, much as Charlie Christian didwith the electric guitar. Castaneda cross-fertilizes hissophisticated jazz improvising and harmonic sensewith the swirling cadences of his native Columbian folkmusic. His quartet here also mixes musical traditions, given the presence of Columbian singer Andrea Tierraand jazz trombonist Marshall Gilkes.

Our pick: JIMMY COBBThe drummer and last surviving member of the bandon jazz's best-selling album, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue,Jimmy Cobb, now 82, is revisiting that iconic disc witha band custom-made for festivals ("no club bookings"says his web page). A quintessential, push-the-beathard bop drummer, Cobb worked extensively withCannonball Adderley (following him into Miles'Sextet), Wes Montgomery and Wynton Kelly, and hasremained active ever since, also leading a quartet

Our pick: WARREN VACHÉA working jazz musician nearly all his life, WarrenVaché is a cornetist. He plays that member of thebrass family, he says, only partly tongue-in-cheek,because he's "lazy," and because since the cornet liesbetween the trumpet and flugelhorn in tone, he onlyhas to carry a single horn to gigs. Vaché studied withChicago jazz trumpeter Pee Wee Erwin, toured with -and was given breathing lessons by - Benny Goodmanand is often heard in trad/swing settings. But he resistscategorization. His own favorite recording is one hemade with a string section, and his last one - a quintetwith trombonist John Allred - assays the bebop reper-toire.

Our pick: AMBROSE AKINMUSIRETrumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire's Blue Note labeldebut, When the Heart Emerges Glistening, has beenwidely heralded, and for once all the hype is justified.Akinmusire is a refreshingly different kind of player, one who avoids all the familiar tropes and strategiesassociated with the trumpet. But rather than justbeing melodically and harmonically fresh, he manipu-lates attack, tone and timbre more impressively thanany current trumpeter - and without benefit of mutes. His working quintet - with tenor saxophonist WalterSmith III, a fully empathetic in-synch, partner - mesh-es to create fully realized music.

Our pick: MARK EGANAn early adapter of the electric bass guitar in jazz,Mark Egan studied with the pioneering electric bassistJaco Pastorius during the 1970s, was a co-leader of thefusion group Elements in the 1980s, and has alsoplayed in groups led by Pat Metheny, saxophonist BillEvans and singer Michael Franks. He's been an inno-vator in electric bass guitar design, as well as a com-poser of film and video scores. At this festival, whichskews toward contemporary electric and smooth jazz,he'll play in guitarist Jeff Ciampa's quartet, along withmulti-reedman Billy Drewes and drummer JeffRosenblatt.

Our pick: MINGUS ORCHESTRA

Of the trio of ensembles Sue Mingus, widow of CharlesMingus, has assembled to carry on the music of thebassist-leader-composer, the least well-known is theMingus Orchestra. It's the one group dedicated more tothe compositions of Mingus than to interpretation ofhis works by improvising soloists. It also differs from atraditional big band in its instrumentation, whichincludes bassoon, bass clarinet, French horn and, forthis performance, Columbian harpist EdmarCastaneda. Gunther Schuller will conduct the orches-tra in four Mingus pieces he arranged for it: "Taurus,""Half-Mast Inhibitions," Noon Night" and "Chill ofDeath."

heard on John Coltrane's mid-1960s Ascension album.During that same decade, Archie Shepp was himself aleader within the avant-garde free jazz movement, butone who believed the music had a politically activistrole to play, as demonstrated on his Fire Music, withits poem to Malcolm X. Since the 1960s, Shepp hasembraced more of the jazz tradition, tempering his freejazz impulses with forays into bebop, swing and (con-tinuing a penchant evident during his early years) afondness for playing ballads in a breathy, husky, caressing tone. He'll surely delve into Bird's book atthis event.
